Let Us Break Bread Together: Traditional Armenian Bread Recipe Weaves Family Together

Let Us Break Bread Together: Traditional Armenian Bread Recipe Weaves Family Together
By Jennifer Hambrick

For Columbus attorney Stephen McCoy, bread means family. And not just any bread, but the traditional Armenian braided sweetbread called choreg.

And not just any choreg recipe, but the recipe his great-grandmother carried with her through war, through genocide, across two continents and in utter poverty to a new life – and a new family – in America.

It’s not just a treat; there’s our family history that’s, kind of, brought and baked into it,” said McCoy of his family’s choreg recipe.

As a young adult, McCoy’s great-grandmother Armine lived in Armenia during the period of World War I and the Ottoman Empire’s 1915 Armenian genocide.

According to some estimates, that genocide took the lives of more than one million Armenians, including at least three of McCoy’s ancestors.

“Armine’s father and two of her siblings were killed in the genocides,” McCoy said. “The family split at a point where mother and a couple of her siblings lived in Russia. And she came back to check on their homes and their belongings. And from there, they lived in abandoned buildings, and she first-hand witnessed mass killings.”

Armine managed to escape the Armenian genocide in a British military evacuation. She and tens of thousands of others were routed first to cities in the Middle East. Armine later landed in Europe.

“She eventually found her way to Marseille, in France, where she met my great-grandfather,” McCoy said. “She really didn’t have any belongings with her by the time she got to Marseille. Really, she just had the clothes on her back and what knowledge she was able to bring, and part of that was this bread recipe.”

From France, Armine and McCoy’s great-grandfather immigrated to Niagara Falla, New York, and started the family that would one day include McCoy.

Armine had learned how to make choreg from her mother, and McCoy doesn’t know how many generations back the family recipe extends.

But Armine’s family carried that recipe forward through later generations, all the way to McCoy’s holiday celebrations and family gatherings, where it has always been a tradition.

“[My mom] has made it virtually every year since I was a child,” McCoy said. “I really grew up with this stuff. She would make huge batches – I’m talking dozens of loaves – and she would actually mail them out to various members of our family that live in Niagara Falls, Phoenix, even Oklahoma City. It would be made early in the year around spring, sometimes around Christmastime, really around the holidays.”

In the 1980s, someone recorded Armine’s choreg recipe on a typewriter, likely taking dictation from Armine.

“When my great-grandmother was still living, she was able to recite the recipe,” McCoy said.

That typed recipe is now mounted and framed, and just earlier this year, McCoy’s mother handed off the family choreg recipe to him.

“She symbolically passed the baton,” he said, “and this year I made it for the first time.”

And that means McCoy has joined the ranks of others in his extended family for whom making Armine’s recipe is a treat as special as eating it.

“We had a big family reunion in Niagara Falls recently with a lot of our extended family and cousins that are the descendants of Armine, and we made choreg there,” he said. “It was a great experience to see some of the older members of our family actually sit down and make it for the entire family.”

As a child, McCoy says, he had not understood the extent to which his great-grandmother and her immediate family had been affected by the Armenian genocide. But now, as keeper of Armine’s choreg recipe, he appreciates that this special bread is full of family history, as well as flavor.

Said McCoy, “Hopefully this will be something that I can pass along to [family] in the future, as well.”

Possible gas price cut may disrupt system – Gazprom Armenia chief

Panorama, Armenia
Nov 8 2018

A possible reduction in the gas tariff is problematic, since it may undermine the system, Gazprom Armenia CEO Hrant Tadevosyan said at the National Assembly on Thursday.

“If we don’t want to reduce the gas price through disrupting the system, we should discuss the issue,” he said, adding a final conclusion on the issue will be drawn at the end of 2016, when all discussions are completed.

At the sitting of a parliamentary commission on gas and electricity tariffs earlier on Thursday, Tadevosyan said that the gas sales price is 255 dollars, while the average entry price is 150 dollars “Gazprom Armenia’s margin is 62 dollars. Our spending is greater than revenues, while the issue of finding additional reserves is controversial,” he said.

Tadevosyan did not agree with the claims that the gas contract concluded with Russia features ‘humiliating’ points, stressing all the points of the contract are in the best interests of Armenia.

Meantime, he didn’t rule out possible overspending inside the company.

According to the Armenian MFA, Mnatsakanyan also stressed the importance of the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister and Azerbaijani President, which took place during the CIS summit in Dushanbe.

Zohrab Mnatsakanyan noted that Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev managed to reach certain agreements at the short meeting. If implemented, these agreements could promote formation of favorable environment for peace negotiations.

He added that “the official Yerevan is very concerned about the arms race, which does not contribute to settlement of Karabakh conflict”.

Armenian MoD Spokesman reacts to Aliyev’s statement

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Spokesperson for Armenian Defense Ministry Artsrun Hovhannisyan is surprised by the recent statement by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

At the request of Mediamax, Mr. Hovhannisyan has commented on Ilham Aliyev’s statement that Azerbaijan has “liberated” an area of around 10,000 square kilometers from the Armenian side in Nakhijevan.

“I am surprised to hear that a commander-in-chief in unaware his soldiers are “liberating” territories from themselves. How can they liberate that area from Armenian forces if the latter never had direct control over it? Although it is for now that the Armenian forces have no control over the territory. They don’t control it yet…” said Artsrun Hovhannisyan.

National Democratic party has made a decision not to participate in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections in Armenia. Leader Vazgen Manukyan has issued a statement informing about it.

“The NDP had a big role in the life of the state from 1991-2008. As a result of election frauds registered during the further elections, the party’s role started gradually decreasing in the political life of the country. When a decision was made to conduct snap parliamentary elections in May 2019 the party made a decision to participate in them, and we enthusiastically started discussions,” Manukyan said in the statement, adding that they have planned their actions ready to upgrade the party, to refresh its ideological principles and develop them.

Azerbaijan’s military power is key factor in Karabakh settlement – Aliyev

Interfax - Russia & CIS Military Newswire
November 6, 2018 Tuesday 1:39 PM MSK
Azerbaijan's military power is key factor in Karabakh settlement - Aliyev
BAKU. Nov 6
Azerbaijan will continue to build up its military power and sees this
as one of the critical factors in the settlement of the conflict over
Nagorno-Karabakh, as international law continues to be fully ignored,
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said during a working visit to
Azerbaijan's Agdam district.
"We will continue to build up our military power, and I believe this
is one of the most important factors in negotiations. Because,
unfortunately, norms of international law are being fully ignored. We
will achieve what we want. We demand justice. We demand that our
historical lands be liberated from the invaders, and they will be
liberated," Aliyev said.
Baku stands ready for any developments in the settlement of the
conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, he said.
"I hope that after correctly analyzing the situation in the region,
the Armenian leadership will withdraw its occupational forces from our
lands. Otherwise, any option is possible, and we stand ready for any
option," Aliyev said.
Azerbaijan showed two years ago that it can liberate its lands in a
legal way, he said.
The events taking place in Armenia show that the policy pursued by
Azerbaijan is producing results, he said.
"I have said repeatedly, and I want to say today as well, there is no
need to conceal this - we will continue to isolate Armenia from all
regional projects using all means available, and we will restore our
territorial integrity," Aliyev said.
"The new Armenian leadership must not repeat the mistakes of the
previous regime. It must withdraw the occupying forces from the seized
lands in the near future through negotiations, and it should give
Azerbaijani citizens the chance to return to their native, historical,
ancestral lands," he said.
"The sooner they understand this, the better for them and for the
region. I'd like to say once again that we are not going to resign
ourselves to this situation. The norms of international law fully
support our position, and historical justice is on our side," Aliyev
said.
