La conférencière commença par un peu de géographie, en montrant sur l?écran l? Arménie actuelle, fort réduite par rapport à l?Empire arménien antique, notamment sous Tigrane II. L?identité arménienne a évolué au cours des siècles, notamment en adhérant à la religion chrétienne en 301 et en adoptant son propre alphabet. Organisée en clans à cause des particularités géographiques et physiques de la région, la société arménienne prospère grâce au commerce et à l?artisanat, jusqu?à ce que l?Empire ottoman réduise progressivement son rayonnement par des massacres de plus en plus violents, culminant en 1914. Environ 1 million et demi de personnes exécutées ou déportées et les fleuves du Tigre et de l?Euphrate en portèrent la marque rouge en charriant des flots de sang durablement? Cette réalité a été vécue dans sa chair par la conférencière, dont la mère échappa au massacre en devenant la bonne à tout faire de son maître turc, qu?elle réussit à quitter pour la France, en 1918. Traumatisée par ces drames, la mère de Véronique Demirjian a tout perdu et vit avec la tristesse au fond du cœur. Sa fille arrive à faire son deuil de cette douloureuse époque en écrivant sur le sujet. C?est la reconnaissance officielle du génocide qui a permis à l?écrivain de sortir son manuscrit du tiroir pour publier son témoignage, un moyen de soulager une souffrance qui devient communicable et partagée. « Notre humanité ne se reconnaît que dans l?hommage que l?on rend à nos morts » , conclut Véronique Demirjian. «Je ne suis pas un phénomène», se défend Artin, tout en sortant sa raquette. C’est pourtant loin d’être vrai: à 100 ans, après avoir survécu au génocide arménien puis refait sa vie en Argentine, il joue au tennis trois fois par semaine. Sur un court de terre battue de Buenos Aires, le vieil homme affiche une santé de fer, assurant être arrivé à son grand âge «sans beaucoup d’efforts». «Je n’ai pas de secrets», dit Artin Elmayan. Il ne prend pas de médicaments, ne porte pas de lunettes et ne souffre que d’arthrose.
«Le moteur va bien, les câbles électriques ont quelques ratés mais le principal, ça va», confie-t-il, se rappelant ses débuts dans le tennis à seulement 39 ans. Dans la catégorie Seniors, son palmarès est impressionnant: 27 Coupes, dont la dernière il y a 10 ans, quand il a arrêté de faire des compétitions dans la catégorie des plus de 90 ans, faute d’adversaire. Son partenaire de jeu, c’est Luis, un «gamin de 79 ans».
L’an dernier, il a exaucé son rêve de rencontrer Guillermo Vilas, la gloire du tennis argentin des années 1970. «Il est venu à mon anniversaire, c’est mon préféré, je le suivais à fond», raconte Artin. Trois fois par semaine, il prend le train depuis San Isidro, où il vit, jusqu’au club River Plate, uniquement accompagné de sa raquette. «Oui, je viens seul, il y a seulement sept arrêts», dit-il en haussant distraitement les épaules. Quand on voit Artin, on lui donne facilement 20 ans de moins. Et quand on l’écoute, on lui en enlève 10 de plus.
Cet éternel jeune homme souriant dit lire «de la philosophie et des choses scientifiques, car c’est utile», parlant couramment les cinq langues qu’il a apprises au moment de son exil forcé d’Arménie, d’abord vers le Liban et la Syrie, avant d’atterrir à Buenos Aires à 21 ans. Il a fêté son siècle de vie en avril mais ne compte pas s’arrêter là. Son dernier coup dur a été le décès en 2016 de Luisa, son épouse pendant 74 ans et la mère de son unique fille, Elisa, avec qui il vit actuellement. «Est-ce que je suis heureux? Cela peut aller. Chacun a son destin. La vie, c’est comme le tennis: quand on entre sur le court, on ne sait pas si on va gagner».

Accueilli dans un orphelinat au Liban, il n'a retrouvé sa mère qu'à six ans. "Mon enfance a été horrible, vous le savez, nous sommes des survivants du génocide arménien", dit-il. Les Arméniens estiment qu'un million et demi des leurs ont été tués de manière systématique à la fin de l'Empire ottoman. Nombre d'historiens et plus de 20 pays, dont la France, l'Italie et la Russie, ont reconnu qu'il y avait eu un génocide. La Turquie affirme qu'il s'agissait d'une guerre civile, doublée d'une famine, dans laquelle 300.000 à 500.000 Arméniens et autant de Turcs ont trouvé la mort. Artyn a commencé une deuxième vie en Argentine, suivant sa soeur qui y avait lancé une usine de chaussures, puis créant son propre entreprise de confection d'uniformes scolaires. Il est retourné en Arménie - comme touriste - dans les années 1980 et a bien l'intention d'y aller encore. "J'aimerais m'y rendre peut-être cette année, en juillet ou septembre, car j'ai déjà 100 ans", confie-t-il, avant se s'interroger: "Est-ce que je suis heureux? Cela peut aller. Chacun a son destin. Azerbaijan deliberately pursues confrontation, and it’s difficult to predict what it expects from that. There are different versions. I would like to believe that it will not unleash a war, but a sharp aggravation of the situation is expected. When it will occur is unclear. It’s just necessary to be vigilant and be ready”, Tarasov said, adding that the recent steps by Azerbaijan seem to be a means to check the reaction of Moscow and Yerevan. The statement of the Minsk Group Co-chairs means that maybe they are preparing for a move”, the Russian expert said, adding that all the Co-chair countries are UNSC members, and if they recognize Azerbaijan an aggressor, Azerbaijan will not see Nagorno Karabakh even in its dreams. The number of Armenia’s banking system customers in March 2017 amounted 2 million 421 thousand 181 people. According to the Central Bank of Armenia, the number of customers has increased by 44 thousand 16 people compared to the previous year’s same period. The number of natural persons among the total number of customers increased nearly by 43 thousand – amounting 2 million 343 thousand 225, while legal persons increased by over one thousand – amounting 77 thousand 956. At the same time, the number of credit accounts in Armenian banks amounted to 857 thousand 530 – a decrease of 32 thousand 106. The number of term deposit accounts in March of 2017 amounted to 194 thousand 216 – increasing by 4 thousand 573 in a year.

The Chatolicos spoke with local reporters yesterday at the Sheraton Hotel where he thanked His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for the warm reception and welcome accorded to his entourage.
He said that he briefly met with His Highness the Amir and thanked him for the privilege to personally extend greetings of the Armenian church to Kuwait. He also lauded him for the religious tolerance in the country. “I came to Kuwait to consecrate the church of Armenia in Kuwait. According to tradition, it is the building where we hold our praise and worship in the house of God and so we it must be consecrated. That is the purpose of my visit. But my visit has several programs and activities including meeting HH the Amir. I visited the Amir six years ago. The people of Kuwait must be proud of their leader, because HH the Amir is a man of time. He is a man of intelligence, wisdom and courage and more importantly a man of tolerance,” he said. “In a world which is becoming more of a global village, we must live together, it is not a question of choice, but it is a must. We are all brothers and must live together. I am happy that we are all witnessing that here in Kuwait. We are all living in this beautiful country with mutual respect. That is all we need, to live in harmony with each other, we must understand and accept each other,” he said. Asked by Kuwait Times whether the Armenian Church in Kuwait has been experiencing the same problem with other Christian communities like the shortage of the house of worship, he said, “I cannot speak on behalf of other Christian communities in Kuwait. I meet them several times, but there is one thing in common I heard from everyone, that they are extremely grateful for HH the Amir for the kind of religious tolerance they have been experiencing here in this country. As for the Armenian Church, we have enough space. We are thankful because through Armenian churches and schools here, we can educate our people. In the movie, we witnessed the beginnings of these acts of atrocity with the depiction of young, Turkish men beating innocent people. As we know, modern-day Turkey has been unwilling as a country to acknowledge the genocide ever happened. We cannot allow Tuesday's violent and illegal behavior by the Turkish security guards to go unaddressed. "The actions of the Turkish security guards are outrageous, and I condemn them. They violate both American law and deeply-held American values. The Turkish security guards must be held accountable. "Our American President should take appropriate diplomatic and legal action against these Turkish thugs for their violence towards the Armenian, Kurdish, Yezidi, and other human rights demonstrators.
