Education: Great positive impact both in academic and educational aspects: Head of Stepanakert’s ‘Tumo’ center

Aravot, Armenia

Aug 19 2017

Three military units of the Defence Army have been attending the “Tumo” center of creative technologies in Stepanakert twice a week since May this year. They are given the opportunity to choose a profession from the four proposed spheres.

“The “Tumo-Army” program makes education accessible for soldiers during the service. They also start to specialize in some extent and use their years of service for the advancement of their careers. I think the smarter, the more knowledgeable the soldier is, the higher his fighting efficiency will be. I see soldier’s fighting efficiency not only in physical but also in mental aspect”, head of Stepanakert’s “Tumo” center Koryun Khachaturyan told Aravot.am, adding that the program is attended by about 225 Defence Army soldiers.

Speaking about the activities of Stepanakert’s “Tumo” center, Koryun Khachaturyan notes, that such specialties are being offered there that are relevant and suitable to work in any field. He emphasizes that it has had a great positive impact both in academic and educational aspects: “Our pedagogical approaches are special. We try to make sure that our students strive to learn something new independently, as well as that beyond “Tumo” they are as willing and able to learn too”.

According to him, the importance of all this is consistent and continuous learning.

“Another important part of our approach is the teaching teamwork, which I think is missing in Armenia and Artsakh in general. We do this through trainings, we teach the need for team concept in any field. We are called “Tumo” center for creative technologies and I would like to emphasize the word creative because it is a creative place where students can create something on their own initiative and mind. Here we not only teach the students some knowledge, some programs, but this center is also a platform for them”.

The head of Stepanakert’s “Tumo” is pleased to announce that different departments of Artsakh have already applied them for developing and implementing projects: “Therefore, we have become a reliable partner. The interesting thing is that they trust us not only in terms of quality but also appreciate the fact, that we use our students to implement projects, instead of applying to foreign companies or inviting a specialist”.

Armenia’s Levon Aronian wins Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz

Author Floyd Cook

The 15-time world champ temporarily came out of 12 years of retirement to take on a much younger generation of masters at the Rapid and Blitz tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.

Vietnamese top chess player Le Quang Liem lost to legendary chess player Russian-Croatian Garry Kasparov in the rapid category at the ongoing St. Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament in the United States on August 16.

Aronian secured a first place finish in the tournament with a combined score of 24.5 points. Sergey Karjakin (Russia) became the victor of the Blitz competition 13․5 points, with Levon Aronian taking the second place with 12․5 points.

Anand and Kasparov are by far the oldest two players in the 150000 Dollars prize money event and both would like to finish on a positive note.

On the other hand, Kasparov started the day with a loss against Karjakin, but in the remaining rounds, scored over Perez, Nakamura and Caruana and drew against the rest.

The mind, it is precisely this that is failed to Garry Kasparov, who has yet attempted in the course of the tournament to intensify their aggressiveness. Sergey Karjakin (Rus, 16); 4.

Two points for awarded for a win in rapid format, one for a draw and none for a loss. Ian Nepomniachtchi (10 + 10) 20; 5-7.

BAKU: Russian Foreign Ministry on Karabakh settlement

Turan Information Agency, Azerbaijani Opposition
 Friday
Russian Foreign Ministry on Karabakh settlement
Moscow/18.08.17/Turan: Press Secretary of the Russian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova commented on the situation around the
Karabakh settlement at a traditional briefing on Thursday, in response
to journalists' requests. "Russia has always supported measures aimed
at reducing tensions in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The
need for concrete steps in this direction was repeatedly stated by the
co-chairs, it was said at the summits in Vienna (May 2016) and St.
Petersburg (June 2016)," she said.
"The implementation of the measures proposed by the mediators depends
on the goodwill of the parties to the conflict. For our part, we are
doing our best to stabilize the situation and create conditions for
the continuation of the negotiation process aimed at achieving a
settlement. This approach prevailed at the meeting of the foreign
ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Moscow in April this year.
Now the co-chairs are working on the preparation of the next summit on
the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement. To this end, in July this year they
held talks in Brussels with the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and
Armenia. Consultations will be continued "on the sidelines" of the
next session of the UN General Assembly in New York in the second half
of September. Based on their results, a corresponding statement will
be made.
I would like to emphasize again what we regularly say at all levels:
in Russia, the Karabakh issue is given special attention, it is one of
our foreign policy priorities and is featured in the Foreign Policy
Concept of the Russian Federation," Zakharova said. -02D-

The Voice Kids : Revivez la reprise magique de Withney Houston par Monica (VIDEO)

TF1, France

Armenia’s ‘village of friendship’ under periodic Azeri shelling: OC Media

PanArmenian, Armenia

Aug 18 2017

PanARMENIAN.Net – OC Media has prepared an article about the village of Barekamavan in Armenia‘s Tavush province which regularly comes under fire by Azerbaijani troops.

Barekamavan means ‘the village of friendship’ in Armenian.

But there is no longer any friendship between Armenians and Azerbaijanis in Barekamavan, and the village itself is on the brink of disappearing, the main reason being the periodic shelling from Azerbaijan and the bleak economic situation, it adds.

“Barekamavan is pinned to the side of the mountains; on the other side, lies the Azerbaijani village of Kamarli. The nearest Armenian villages of Koti and Dovegh are about 10 kilometres from Barekamavan. Surrounded by hills and forests to the west, to the east lies a mountain dotted with landmines, military posts, and barbed wire fences. From there, the village lies directly in sight of the Azerbaijani soldiers,” the article says.

“In the village centre, a few dilapidated buildings house the village administration, post office, and school. On the surrounding hills half-destroyed houses without roofs can be seen — a reminder of the 1992–1994 war. Embedded in some buildings are the traces — either complete or partial — of shells. Some are no more than gaping holes. Residents know practically by heart which damage was caused in ‘that war’ and which in ‘this one’.”

Also, the feature weighs in on some other problems facing Barekamavan, including the lack of irrigation and drinking water. The population is constantly dwindling, with the residents forced to travel to Yerevan or Moscow for seasonal jobs.

USC to Host 3rd Annual Innovate Armenia Festival

On Saturday, September 23, the USC Institute of Armenian Studies presents Innovate Armenia 2017, a day of discovery, technology, music, food, wine, chess and lively conversation headlined by a pair of celebrity-journalist brothers and two 2016 Pulitzer Prize winners, Asbarez reports.

The brothers are Washington Post columnist David Ignatius and Harvard Business Review editor Adi Ignatius.

The Pulitzer Prize winners are poet Peter Balakian, of Colgate University, and novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen, a USC professor of English and American studies.

A Vietnamese-born English literature professor headlining an Armenian diaspora festival may seem strange, but it goes to the heart of the USC Institute of Armenian Studies’ outward-looking, internationalist philosophy.

“We take global Armenian questions and explore them as part of big world issues,” says director Salpi Ghazarian. “Innovate Armenia is the platform where we make the best of scholarship accessible.”

The Armenian diaspora experience has lessons for everyone, according to David Kang, a featured speaker at Innovate Armenia 2016. A professor of international relations, business and East Asian languages, Kang heads USC’s Korean Studies Institute. His presentation last year focused on the fluidity of hybrid identities. “Armenians are going through very similar issues that Koreans have,” he said in his talk.

In a city as multiethnic as Los Angeles, the immigrant experience is something most of us can relate to, Ghazarian says. “Anyone, including those whose ancestors arrived on the Mayflower, will find something to pique their interest at Innovate Armenia.”

Last year’s festival, which focused on digital humanities, drew 3,000 attendees and 20,000 more watched online. This year’s program — with a focus on rethinking, relearning and reimagining identity, language, history and technology —is expected to draw even larger crowds.
