Opposition MP: Pashinyan’s all opponents held in Baku prison

Panorama, Armenia
Dec 11 2023

Arayik Harutyunyan was not forced to resign as Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) president before being replaced by Samvel Shahramanyan, Armenian opposition MP Artur Khachatryan insisted on Monday.
Harutyunyan and several other former Artsakh leaders were detained by Azerbaijan following its violent seizure of Artsakh in mid-September.

“It’s yet to be revealed how the change of power took place in Artsakh,” the MP from the opposition Hayastan faction told reporters.

Khachatryan recalled that Shahramanyan and the Artsakh parliament majority were members of Harutyunyan’s Free Homeland Party.

“Are the [Armenian] authorities saying that they refused to intervene to stop the massacre in Artsakh because they disapproved Arayik Harutyunyan’s resignation? Are they trying to use it to justify their inaction?” the deputy asked.

“Arayik Harutyunyan’s imprisonment in Baku is also conditioned by the fact that he knows and can tell much more than the incumbent authorities would like to hear. It’s also about the other presidents. All political opponents of [PM Nikol] Pashinyan are being held in prison in Azerbaijan. This is probably the result of some kind of agreement between the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaderships," Khachatryan charged.

The National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia (RA) issued a statement in connection with an Azerbaijani man’s video alleged to be shot by him in Armenia. The statement reads as follows:

"Regarding the video released on December 5 of this year by Telman Gasimov, a well-known and ‘serious specialist’ representing among Azerbaijan's expert circles as a military expert and Armenologist, the RA National Security Service informs that Telman Gasimov received the said video back in November 2017 from dual citizen ‘A. K.,’ who recorded a video of the building where T. Gasimov was ‘born and raised’ and sent [it] to him.

“However, 6 years later, T. Gasimov, by editing that video, adding his voice to the video, is attempting, with cheap propaganda, to spread panicky moods in the Armenian society and thereby increase his ‘importance’ among the Azerbaijani audience.”

An excerpt from the 2017 correspondence is presented below.

Michael Mahdesian Receives 2023 Vahan Cardashian Award

CULVER CITY, Calif.Dec. 1, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Michael Mahdesian, chairman of Servicon, a leading national aerospace, hospital environmental services (EVS), and commercial cleaning services provider, was honored with the 2023 Vahan Cardashian Award. The prestigious award was presented to him for his activism and unwavering dedication to promoting human rights for the Armenian community and beyond by the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA)—Western Region (ANCAWR).

Mahdesian accepted the honor at the 2023 ANCA—WR Awards Gala on November 12 at the Omni Hotel in Los Angeles. A portion of the proceeds were donated to support Artsakh Genocide survivors.

About the Vahan Cardashian Award

The award is named for Vahan Cardashian, who lobbied the United States for support in creating an independent Armenian state in the aftermath of World War I and the Armenian Genocide. In founding the American Committee for the Independence of Armenia (ACIA), he created the first U.S. Armenian lobbying group, which served as the predecessor for ANCA.

"It is with great pride that the ANCA—WR salutes Michael Mahdesian for his lifetime of brave, impassioned service to the advancement of the Armenian cause and humanitarianism at home and abroad," says ANCA-WR Chair Nora Hovsepian. "His knowledge and experience in public policy and human rights has inspired generations of activists. His fierce commitment to giving a voice to those in need is an example for all Armenians as we stand in solidarity with people worldwide who seek democracy and a better life."

Mahdesian said he was humbled and honored to receive the award and took time to reflect on the lessons he had learned from his father: "My parents were first-generation Americans who came of age during the Great Depression. They knew from our family's experience during the genocide and later integrating into American society the necessity of civic engagement. They encouraged my participation in politics, humanitarianism, and philanthropy. If you think of those three words, they are all about people. We can never forget that we are all human beings and need each other's support. This recognition encourages me that I have, in some small ways, helped those in need and tried to make this world a better place."

A Lifetime of Caring

After completing his education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Mahdesian served as policy director and press secretary for political activist Tom Hayden's successful campaign running for the California State Assembly. Mahdesian contributed to the Campaign for Economic Democracy (CED) by winning a contract to train Vista volunteers in community organizations. The grassroots organization, led by Hayden and wife Jane Fonda, helped achieve progressive goals in California, such as protecting renters, unions, and women's rights throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

During this era, Mahdesian also became a prominent leader in LA's Armenian American community, where he helped to establish the ANCA as an influential political advocacy group. For decades since, he has served as a supporter and advisor to ANCA and ANCA—WR, applying his energy, perspective, and years of advocacy to fulfill his commitment to ensuring the Armenian community has a voice within American politics at the local, state, and national levels.

In the early 80s, Mahdesian applied his CED and ANCA experience to become a top aide, strategist, and fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Washington, D.C. He helped the Democratic Party retain its congressional majority despite the popularity of U.S. President Ronald Reagan. This was also when Mahdesian met his wife, Natalie.

The couple returned to LA to start a family, and Mahdesian began a janitorial supply company that later became the supply division of Servicon, the company his father, Richard, started.

In 1989, after the devastating earthquake in Armenia, Mahdesian spearheaded U.S. disaster relief efforts to help secure vital aid for the suffering people of Armenia, including organizing an airlift.
His extensive experience in the field of humanitarian aid led U.S. President Bill Clinton to appoint Mahdesian to serve in the State Department as bureau deputy of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where he was tasked with overseeing international humanitarian aid and post-conflict transitions to peace and democracy.

While in the State Department, he became a high-ranking operational diplomat, assisting with many global crises: He lent assistance following the Rwandan Genocide, developed programs on the ground in coordination with the Good Friday Accords in Northern Ireland, led the first U.S. team to the Democratic Republic of the Congo after the overthrow of Mobutu, and administered humanitarian aid to those in need during conflicts in IraqBosniaKosovoSri Lanka, and Indonesia.

In 2000, Mahdesian returned to Servicon as board chairman, where he pioneered "green cleaning" and other sustainability efforts. He also worked with lawmakers in Sacramento, CA, to root out sexual harassment in the industry and crack down on the underground market that depresses wages and benefits for workers. In 2001, LA Mayor Jimmy Hahn appointed Mahdesian to the city's planning commission, where he served four years working to improve the city's infrastructure.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mahdesian founded ServiconCares, a philanthropic foundation that partners with and donates to groups in Southern California to improve the communities where Servicon employees work and live. He has remained active in progressive politics, devoting his life to ensuring the people of Californiathe United States, and the world have better opportunities for prosperity and peace.

In July 2023, Mahdesian received one of the highest honors from the State of California and the California Assembly, an official resolution commending him for his career of service to the country, California, humanity, and the Armenian community.

Armenia’s nuclear plant is very important for country’s energy sector, says Vahagn Khachaturyan

 17:43, 1 December 2023

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS. During the 28th UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan participated in a discussion entitled "Zero Nuclear Energy".

Speaking about Armenia's nuclear power plant, the President emphasized its crucial role in the country's energy sector.

“It provides 25 to 30 percent of Armenia's energy capacity,” President Khachaturyan noted.

The President recalled that in the early 1990s, when he was mayor of Yerevan, people in Armenia had been living without natural gas and electricity until the Armenian nuclear power plant resumed operation.  However, their lives changed significantly after its operation.

‘’The operation period of Armenia's nuclear power plant has been extended until 2026 and is planned to be further extended until 2036. Armenia is already considering the construction of a new nuclear power plant. Discussions are underway with U.S., South Korean, and Russian specialists to determine the appropriate capacity for the new nuclear power plant,’’ said the President and added that he did not rule out that a decision could be made to build small modular nuclear reactors, noting that the respective discussions are underway.

28th UN Climate Change Conference is being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November until 12 December 2023. More than 70,000 delegates participate at COP28, including the member states (or Parties) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Business leaders, young people, climate scientists, Indigenous Peoples, journalists, and various other experts and stakeholders are also among the participants.

UN Climate Change conferences (or COPs) take place every year, and are the world’s only multilateral decision-making forum on climate change with almost complete membership of every country in the world.
The COP is where the world comes together to agree on ways to address the climate crisis, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, helping vulnerable communities adapt to the effects of climate change, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Kidnapped Nagorno-Karabakh man files appeal against unlawful 15-year prison sentence in Azerbaijan

 15:22,

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 27, ARMENPRESS. Vagif Khachatryan, an elderly ethnic Armenian man from Nagorno-Karabakh who was kidnapped by Azeri border guards during his ICRC-mediated medical evacuation on July 29 and later sentenced to 15 years in prison in Azerbaijan on fabricated war crime charges, has appealed the verdict to a court of appeals, his lawyer told Azeri media.

Azeri authorities pressed fabricated charges against Khachatryan and jailed him in Baku.

The Armenian foreign ministry earlier said that the arrest of the Red Cross-protected patient from Nagorno-Karabakh amounts to war crime.

Prominent lawyer Siranush Sahakyan said that the kidnapping constitutes extraordinary rendition in terms of international law and a due process is therefore ruled out.

The kidnapped man’s daughter, in a plea to the UN to ensure the safe release of her father, said that all charges pressed by the Azeri prosecution are fabricated and her father is innocent.

Khachatryan’s testimony in court was even by an Azeri translator earlier in October.

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 22, ARMENPRESS. Germany’s Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Niels Annen, has said that Germany appreciates the Crossroads of Peace project proposed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Speaking at a press briefing after the Armenian-German intergovernmental session in Yerevan, Annen said that Armenia has made much effort to improve its investment environment.

We highly appreciate the Crossroads of Peace idea proposed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which will give many opportunities in this regard. We will once again present this to German businesses, and we hope that by taking into account the environment they will increase or continue their investments,” the German official added.

Kurdish, Armenian, Syriac and Georgian women come together in Yerevan

Nov 26 2023

Women gathered in Yerevan to discuss violence against women, ways of organising and struggling against violence on the occasion of 25 November.

Kurdish, Armenian, Syriac and Georgian women came together in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, at a meeting organised by the Free Women's Union on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Lianna Mihoyan, a member of the Free Women's Union, read a statement on the meaning of 25 November, stressing that the day is based on the struggle of the Mirabel sisters and that this struggle continues today.

Mihoyan commemorated the resistance of many women from Jeanne d'Arc to Sakine Cansız and stated that women's struggle is growing.

In the speeches made at the meeting, political violence against women was discussed and the need to come together against the male system and the state was emphasised.

Lianna Mihoyan said, "We have the power to protect ourselves and take care of ourselves. We must feel each other's pain and create our own organisation so that we do not accept any kind of violence and injustice done to us."

Larisa Alaverdyan, a human rights defender in Armenia, stated that violence against women is not only physical but also mental, and that work should be done to change the mentality of society.

Syriac parliamentarian Zemfira Mirzoyev stated that they live in a world where strong men have a say and women have a great responsibility in every field.

Kristine Vardanya, President of the National United Social Organisation, said that women in every country in the world are subjected to male violence.

"Our actions should not be limited to today. Because women are subjected to violence every day, it exists in all nations and religions."

Maria Karapetyan, MP for the Party of Civil Contract, said that the ongoing wars in all parts of the world have caused many women and children to suffer and be subjected to violence.

"All states are run with a male mentality and these wars are also being fought with a male mentality," Maria Karapetyan said.
