Western Prelate Bishop Torkom Donoyan, on Tuesday welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Aris and Angela Stambolian to the Western Prelacy. The couple expressed their unwavering support for the Western Prelacy in general and the parish of Forty Martyrs Church in Orange County in particular, and donated $2 million for the purpose of establishing a middle school at the Ari Guiragos Minassian Elementary School in Orange County, in memory of their parents Voskan and Elize Stambolian.

On this occasion, the Prelate praised the couple’s noble act, which is an immense gesture that contributes to the preservation of the Armenian nation. Also, through the broadening implementation of services and educational programs through our schools, the mission of the Western Prelacy will be even more expanded and meaningful in the lives of our faithful.

Also present at the meeting were Prelacy Executive Council members, Vahe Hovaguimian, Chair, Meher Der Ohanessian, Vice-Chair, George Chorbajian, Secretary and liaison to the Board of Regents, Dr. Kaloust Agopian, Treasurer, as well as Sarkis Ourfalian, Esq, Chairman of the Board of Regents, along with Rev. Fr. Karekin Bedourian, Pastor of the Forty Martyrs Church and member of the Board of Regents, Mano Dishoyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ani Shahinian Sarkisian, Principal of Ari Guiragos Minassian Elementary School, and Ara Malakian, member of the School’s Education Committee were present during the meeting.

Azerbaijani press: Culture Ministry develops action plan for "Year of Shusha"

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture is developing an action plan within the Year of Shusha [city liberated from Armenian occupation in the 2020 second Karabakh war], announced this year upon President Ilham Aliyev’s order, Maryam Gafarzade, spokesperson for the ministry, told Trend.

“As part of the work carried out in the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, it’s planned to restore historical monuments, museums and libraries, and other cultural institutions of the city,” Gafarzade said. “It’s also planned to hold local and international events, concerts and festivals in the city throughout the year, organize media tours, and shoot new films.”

“Along with traditional cultural events such as “Kharibulbul”, “Days of Vagif’s Poetry”, “International Music Festival of Uzeyir Hajibayli [famous Azerbaijani composer of the 20th century]”, this year it’s also planned to hold a literary festival in Shusha to celebrate the 190th anniversary of Khurshidbanu Natavan [famous Azerbaijani poetess of the 19th century, born in the city],” she noted.

According to her, in order to promote the rich cultural heritage of this ancient Azerbaijani city, the ministry launched the “Pearls of culture of Shusha city” project.

The project covers such directions as “Architectural chronicle of Shusha city”, “Shusha – temple of Azerbaijani music”, “Shusha – hearth of mugham”, “School of carpet weaving of Karabakh – Shusha”, “Literary life of Shusha city”, “Style of national clothes”, and “Personalities of Shusha city “.

“The main goal of the project is wider promotion of the rich culture of this ancient region [Karabakh],” concluded Gafarzade.

Armenia ex-defense minister: Authorities decided to organize PR on army

The army is the structure that, with its organization and level of discipline, is obligated be the first to stand up and straighten its back, restoring its reputation as a former victor and a competitive army in the region. Seyran Ohanyan, leader of the opposition “Armenia” Faction in the National Assembly and former defense minister of Armenia, stated this on the TALK TIME program of Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“Where the army and the people are united, they are invincible. But in this 44-day war [in the fall of 2020], that unity was not seen. In parallel with the war, our authorities failed to move the state on the military tracks, unite the whole nation, and lead to victories. The rear of the army remained open—at least in terms of personnel and logistics. In 2018, the capabilities of our army sharply decreased, first of all, the society was hit, the society was divided into parts,” he said.

And to the remark that the incumbent Armenian authorities announce that the army was armed the most right after the revolution in 2018, Seyran Ohanyan responded: “The authorities are not right—at the very least. If the authorities invite me to any open or closed discussion in the same Ministry of Defense, I can submit. Twenty-seven years of work cannot be compared to [just] three years of work. They have inflated the central apparatus, whereas the military organizations, the mobilization organizations have reduced them. It can be said that they decided to organize PR on the army; that is, the [army] rear support, food, and equipment was underscored more than the armament of the army.”

YEREVAN, JANUARY 20, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian awarded the State Order to Congressman Brad Sherman for his “efforts to strengthen the U.S.-Armenia relationship.”

The order was bestowed upon Sherman by the Armenian Ambassador to the U.S. Lilit Makunts and the Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan, who is on a visit to the U.S.

“I was honored to receive Armenia’s State Order medal from Armenian Ambassador to the U.S. Lilit Makunts and President of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan.

The State Order medal commemorates the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and the United States; it was awarded to me by the decree of Armenian President Armen Sarkissian for my efforts to strengthen the U.S.-Armenia relationship.

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijan files several lawsuits to ECHR against Armenia

Supreme Court Deputy Chairman Chingiz Asgarov has said that Azerbaijan filed lawsuits to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over Armenia’s crimes against Azerbaijan during the first Karabakh war inthe early 1990s, the 2016 April battles, and the 2020 second Karabakh war.

He made the remarks in an interview with journalists in Baku on January 18.

“Azerbaijan has been preparing such lawsuits to the ECHR since 2005. Among them are appeals in connection with Azerbaijani citizens who became refugees and internally displaced people, as well as damage caused to their property,” the deputy chairman said.

Asgarov added that the lawsuits against Armenia for its crimes committed against the civilians during the second Karabakh war are at an early stage of consideration in ECHR.

The deputy chairman stressed that Azerbaijan will voice its position in ECHR next month.

As a result of the military aggression by Armenia, 100 Azerbaijani civilians were killed, including 12 children and 27 women. As many as 454 people were injured, including 35 children. Some 181 children lost one parent, five children lost both parents, one family died. In total, 12,292 residential and non-residential buildings and 288 vehicles were damaged.

A criminal case has been initiated into the death of every civilian in Azerbaijan caused by the Armenian terror, and appeals have been sent to international courts and organizations.

Overall, Armenia launched nearly 30,000 shells and 227 rockets on Azerbaijani civil settlements and inflicted considerable damage on the property, destroying numerous residences, auxiliary structures, residential blocks, governmental buildings, mosques, churches, and cemeteries.

Armenia has so far failed to provide any information about more than 4,000 Azerbaijani citizens who went missing during the first Karabakh war in the early 1990s. Armenia also does not provide information about the Azerbaijani citizens who were in captivity during the first Karabakh war.

A Moscow-brokered ceasefire deal that Baku and Yerevan signed on November 10, 2020, brought an end to six weeks of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani army declared a victory against the Armenian troops. The signed agreement obliged Armenia to withdraw its troops from the Azerbaijani lands that it has occupied since the early 1990s.

The peace agreement stipulated the return of Azerbaijan’s Armenian-occupied Kalbajar, Aghdam and Lachin regions and urged Armenia to withdraw its troops from the Azerbaijani lands that it has occupied since the early 1990s. Before the signing of the deal, the Azerbaijani army had liberated around 300 villages, settlements, city centers, and historic Shusha city.

President Armen Sarkissian, who is in the United Arab Emirates on a working visit, was hosted at the Armenian pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai. According to the press office of the president, Sarkissian toured the Armenian pavilion, got familiarized with the exhibits.   

“At Expo 2020 Dubai, our country presents the ethnotech concept, showcasing Armenia’s rich past and its technological aspirations. The president of the pavilion Lilit Hakobyan briefed the president about the exhibition, the visits and business interactions of the Armenian delegation at the expo,’ the source said.  

Sarkissian attached importance to Armenia’s participation in the event and expressed hope it would serve an opportunity not only for business interactions but also a platform for exchange of knowledge and experience.

Renovated Armenian venue ready for action

The Armavir City Stadium has undergone impressive upgrade work thanks in part to financial support from UEFA.

Armenia has a new top-level football facility following the renovation of the Armavir City Stadium, in the west of the country.

Originally opened in 1980 when Armenia was part of the USSR, the stadium had been closed since 2016. Upgrade work, a key part of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) strategy, which had begun in 2017 but had been paused due to technical issues, was finally completed in late 2021.

The renovated stadium has 3,300 seats, as well as a brand-new artificial training surface, and will host national youth team matches as well as providing a high-level facility for local professional and amateur clubs to train and play.

UEFA’s financial input came via the UEFA Nations League Support Programme, which assists the development of stadia and infrastructure for some of UEFA’s smaller member national associations.

“I am happy that after a break of around 20 years, football is returning to Armavir, with such a quality infrastructure and I am sure our population will benefit a lot from it.

“Armavir, even without having a stadium, was already a football city, as our youth teams had registered great results in different age categories at a national level, and today our children needed this facility. Hopefully we will be able to celebrate many more achievements.”

Armenia are one of the success stories of the UEFA Nations League. Having begun the inaugural 2018/19 edition of the competition in League D, they have earnt successive promotions and will compete in League B during the 2022/23 competition.

At December’s draw, they were paired against Ukraine, Scotland and Republic of Ireland. Group-stage fixtures kick off in June.

French Armenian organizations call on France authorities to demand explanation from Azerbaijan

The Coordinating Council of French-Armenian Organizations (CCAF) issued a statement regarding Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev’s threats against Valerie Pecresse, the President of the Ile-de-France Regional Council of France and a candidate for the French presidency, Armenpress reported. 

Aliyev had stated that the Azerbaijan was unaware of Pecresse’s visit to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), and if they knew she was there, the Azerbaijani authorities would not have allowed her to leave Nagorno-Karabakh.

The CCAF called on the French authorities to demand an explanation and apology from Azerbaijan for making such terrorizing statements against a French presidential candidate, and added that the French government ought to recall its ambassador from Baku and expel the Azerbaijani ambassador from Paris if this explanation and apology are not issued by the Azerbaijani authorities.

Talking to the news media, Pecresse herself stressed the seriousness of making such threats against a presidential candidate, and noted that presidential candidates must be free to go wherever they want.

Pecresse said she does not feel intimidated by these threats, but that she is shocked by the French government’s silence regarding these threats.

Valerie Pecresse had visited Armenia and Artsakh December 21-23, 2021. The ex-foreign minister of France and former European Commissioner Michel Barnier as well as the head of the Republicans in the French Senate, Bruno Retailleau, had accompanied her during this visit.

Gagik Tsarukyan announces tender for construction of colossal Jesus Christ statue in Armenia

YEREVAN, JANUARY 14, ARMENPRESS. A tender is announced in Armenia for the construction of a statue of Jesus Christ. The tender is initiated by the family of the leader of the Prosperous Armenia party Gagik Tsarukyan.

“Let it show the path of rebirth and light to the Armenian people,” Tsarukyan said on social media.

Tsarukyan said the statue will be 33-meter high.  The total height, including the pedestal, could reach up to 100 meters based on a given authors’ project, he said.
