EPISCOPAL DIVINE LITURGY CELEBRATED AT FORTY MARTYRS CHURCH IN HONOR OF THE
FEAST OF THE HOLY TRANSLATORS AND ARMENIAN CULTURAL MONTH

In observance of Armenian Cultural Month and the Feast of the Holy
Translators, on Sunday, October 11th, 2009, Episcopal Divine Liturgy was
celebrated at Forty Martyrs Church in Orange County, followed by a book fair
to honor of the legacy of the founders of the Armenian alphabet and our
translator forefathers.
H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, celebrated Divine
Liturgy, assisted at the altar by Very Rev. Fr. Barthev Gulumian and Rev.
Fr. Hrant Yeretzian. Retired clergy member Archpriest Fr. Moushegh Der
Kaloustian, who is visiting from the East Coast, also participated in the
service.
The Prelate began his sermon by reflecting on the dire political
situation in Armenia during the time of the holy translators, and the
difficulties that abounded for lack of a written language which foreigners
used to their advantage to try and diminish the national identity of the
Armenian people and weaken the Armenian Church. It was in these
circumstances, said the Prelate, that God appeared to St. Mesrob Mashodts in
a vision and revealed to him the script of the Armenian alphabet, thus
changing the course of history and enriching our nation and culture.
The Prelate also reflected on the signing of the protocols between
Armenia and Turkey, urging the faithful to renew their faith, to foster our
heritage, culture, and language, and be resolute in the demanding of our
national rights. The Prelate concluded with a prayer for the welfare of
Armenia.
At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy, the Prelate was led in a
procession to "Gugasian" Hall where he conducted the opening of the book
fair organized by the administration and teacher-parent committee of Ari
Guiragos Minassian School. A.G. Minassian School students joined the church
choir in the singing of a hymn and recited poetry dedicated to the holy
translators.
In his remarks the Prelate commended acting Principal Mrs. Kohar
Zaher and the parent-teacher committee for keeping with tradition and
organizing the book fair each year, and conveyed his message to the
attendees urging them to honor the legacy of our forefathers by teaching
their children Armenian and working towards the splendor of Armenian
educational institutions, specifically A.G. Minassian School.
The opening ceremony concluded with the singing of the Cilician
anthem, followed by the Prelate’s benediction.

Turkey Changes Israel On Syria

TURKEY CHANGES ISRAEL ON SYRIA

Aysor.am
Thursday, October 15

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the canceled
planned joint military drill with Israel to protest against Israeli
air strikes on the Gaza Strip earlier this year. Prime Minisiter said
the government had listened to the voice of the Turkish people when
it decided to cancel the military exercise "Anatolian Eagle".

This announcement coincided with another statement: Turkey and Syria
sign strategic partnership. Besides, the two countries signed an
agreement on visa-free entry on October 13.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry declares openness to boost bilateral ties
in all possible fields, including military, economy, and energy.

Since Israel and Syria are countries in war, some analysts interpreted
these developments as an attack on Israel.

Israel’s media link the canceled joint military drill with some delay
in drone delivery. Recall that Turkey and Israel signed a multi-million
dollar military deal four years ago, under which Israeli Aerospace
Industries and Elbit Systems, Ltd. were obliged to equip the Turkish
military with ten surveillance drones by October 2009.

According to Israeli Valla edition this closing-in also calls into
question weapon equipping to Turkey in general.

Gul: Turkey, Armenia "Not Writing History But Making It"

GUL: TURKEY, ARMENIA "NOT WRITING HISTORY BUT MAKING IT"

/PanARMENIAN.Net/
15.10.2009 11:17 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The presidents of Turkey and Armenia sat side-by-side
to watch a World Cup soccer match on Wednesday, in a show of unity
meant to help defuse opposition to an agreement to reopen their border
and restore relations.

At a meeting of the delegations of Turkey and Armenia in Bursa,
Turkish President Abdullah Gul said "making history can not take
place in a single day."

"This is a process. We have witnessed together that we can solve the
difficult problems within this process," Gul said during the meeting
of Turkish and Armenian delegations.

The participants at the meeting of the delegations affirmed that
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan displayed the same courage shown
by President Abdullah Gul in September 2008 by coming to Turkey to
watch a World Cup qualifying match between the teams of Turkey and
Armenia on Wednesday.

The delegations expressed during the meeting that the two sides showed
an example of great leadership and that the people of both countries
got closer to each other. President Gul referred to the process with
Armenia as "extremely important development".

Sources said that Gul told the delegations "great steps were taken. A
legal platform was prepared. There are documents that were signed. The
next process will be to make progress on this platform".

The calendar as set forth in the documents will go into effect once
the documents have been approved, Gul said.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, for his part, said that the steps
taken by Turkey and Armenia were crucial.

"I have experienced difficulty while trying to inform certain circles
since August 31. I have completed the process by facing difficulties,"
Sargsyan said.

"I have not tried to inform people in order to receive permission from
the Armenian diaspora. I wanted to convey a decision of the Armenian
Government to the diaspora and held meetings in order to update them,"
he said.

"There could be individuals with diffe rkey and Armenia. What is
important is to see that the number of people thinking positively about
our steps are in the majority. The number of people thinking positively
will increase in time. We are doing the right thing. We are taking
steps which we believe are right," the Armenian President concluded.

No Reshuffle In Opposition Camp: Razmik Zohrabyan

NO RESHUFFLE IN OPPOSITION CAMP: RAZMIK ZOHRABYAN

Armenian National Congress is still a weighty political force,
Vice-President of the Republican Party of Armenia Razmik Zohrabyan
stated. "Ultimately, we saw both the weight of ANC in the presidential
race, the resistance and the number of votes for ARFD. Presently, I
do not see reapportionment in the opposition camp" Zohrabyan outlined.

ANC had always laid claims to the authorities, however expressed
consent to the RA President’s policy in Armenia-Turkey relations,
the politician noted.

"Dashnaktsutyun" is a 119-year old political force and we did not
see 1915 and 1918 Alexandropol and Kars Treaties, but they did,
thus certainly have historic problems with Turks. No matter what we
do today, they will say it is wrong, let’s make it our way, whereas
their thinking is unfamiliar to us. They merely oppose. At least we
said what we wanna do," Zohrabyan concluded.

Ankara: Suspects In Dink Death Acknowledge Murder Weapon

SUSPECTS IN DINK DEATH ACKNOWLEDGE MURDER WEAPON

Hurriyet Daily News
Monday, October 12, 2009

Two suspects accused of conspiring to murder Turkish-Armenian
journalist Hrant Dink acknowledged that the gun presented before them
during the 11th trial of the case on Monday was the weapon used in
the murder, news agencies reported.

The gun used to kill Dink was brought to the courtroom while the
culprits were removed from the courtroom one by one so that they
could be shown the gun.

"I was going to kill a man. I was not going to a wedding ceremony,"
said Ogun Samast, the confessed murderer of Dink, when he saw the
gun. Later he took the gun and looked at it. Samast said the gun
he used in the murder had had a problem in its safety lock and that
the gun he was holding in the courthouse had a similar problem. "It
was this gun," he said, according to the Anatolia news agency. Yasin
Hayal, who is a suspected co-conspirator, also said, "I acknowledge
100 percent that this is the gun."

Meanwhile, the attorneys for Dink’s family demanded the court bring the
files of two other important ongoing cases they alleged to be connected
to the Dink case. The first file is for the Ergenekon gang, a group
currently on trial for allegedly plotting to topple the government by
creating turmoil in society. The second file, meanwhile, concerns the
Zirve publishing house case, in which three missionaries were killed
in the southeastern city of Malatya.

Fethiye Cetin, the attorney for the Dink family, said that in a report
commissioned by Parliament’s human rights body about the murder,
Ramazan Akyurek, the intelligence chief of the Black Sea province of
Trabzon at the time of the murder, had said that he left Trabzon on
May 8, 2006, and began work in Ankara on May 9, 2006. According to
him, Dink was murdered because of national sensitivities; he said he
already had the intelligence about the murder from intelligence units.

Cetin alleged that public authoriti nk’s murder at every stage. Cetin
also said it is evident that missionaries, Christians, Jews, Kurds
and Alevis were targeted, according to the briefings Ergenekon case
suspect Sevgi Erenerol gave to the General Staff in 2006.

Russian, Armenian Leaders Praise Ties

RUSSIAN, ARMENIAN LEADERS PRAISE TIES

The presidents of Armenia and Russia praised the current state
of bilateral ties on Monday during talks held just days after
significant developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and
the Turkish-Armenian dialogue.

A statement issued by the Kremlin after the meeting said Serzh
Sarkisian and Dmitry Medvedev discussed ways of stepping up
Russian-Armenian economic and military cooperation as well as
"prospects for the realization of large-scale joint projects in the
energy sphere." The statement did not specify whether two men also
touched upon the Karabakh conflict or Armenia’s ongoing rapprochement
with Turkey welcomed by Moscow.

Welcoming his Armenian counterpart in his Gorki retreat outside
Moscow, Medvedev recalled his trilateral meeting with Sarkisian and
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev held Friday on the sidelines of a
CIS summit in Moldova’s capital Chisinau. "I think that the Russian
mediation in this process is also a very important measure of our
relations," he said.

"I want to thank you for our personal involvement in resolving the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Sarkisian said, for his part. "I want
to thank Russia’s leadership and you personally for supporting the
development of our relations with the Turkish Republic."

Sarkisian pointed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s presence
at the signing of Turkish-Armenian agreements to normalize bilateral
relations in Zurich on Saturday alongside U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton and top European diplomats. The Gorki talks continued
behind closed doors, and it was not clear whether the two presidents
discussed the issue in detail. None of them made statements afterwards.

Speaking to journalists in Zurich, Lavrov called for a speedy
ratification of the agreements by the Turkish and Armenian
parliaments. "The signatories have to ratify the protocols the
sooner the better and get down to their realization in practice," he
said. Lavrov also said that Moscow is ready to assist in restoring
rail communication between the two nations, alluding to the fact
that Armenia’s rail network is managed by Russia’s state-run national
railway company.

In his opening remarks, Medvedev also regretted a nearly 20 percent
drop in the volume Russian-Armenian trade this year resulting from the
global economic downturn. "That is certainly unpleasant and we should
think about how to make up for that," he said. "But considering other
areas, things are on the whole not bad," added the Russian president.

"In my view, our arrangements of the past two-three years have allowed
us to get close to qualitatively new steps in the spheres of economics,
military-political and military-technical cooperation as well as the
humanitarian sphere," agreed Sarkisian.

Nalbandyan defended Armenian side’s position: Republican Party
01:04 / 10/11/2009

`It is essential that Armenia-Turkey Protocols were signed without any
amendments, any preconditions as Armenian side and RA President have
repeatedly stated,’ stated Eduard Sharmazanov, the Secretary of ruling
Republican Faction told NEWS.am.

`As to the delay of the signing, according to recent information the
matter was as follows: Karabakh was mentioned in the final statement
of Turkish side. I suppose that Nalbandyan clearly defended the
positions of Armenian side,’ said Sharmazanov.

Earlier RA MFA Press Secretary Balayan explained the reason for the
delay ` the Turkish side’s attempt to include a phrase in the final
statement, which was unacceptable to the Armenian side. `We managed to
thwart the attempts,’ said Balayan. He did not go into details
concerning the wording. He pointed out that the sides decided to
refrain from any final statements.

There was a phrase mentioning Karabakh in the text of Turkish side’s
final statement, Turkish Zaman daily reports, referring to diplomatic
sources. Armenian side expressed its protest.

Just An Ordinary Joe?

JUST AN ORDINARY JOE?

The Age

October 9, 2009 – 12:16PM

With Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership in decline, the Liberal Party may
look to Joe Hockey. But does the affable shadow treasurer have what
it takes to lead?

THE story of how Brendan Nelson came to live in Joe Hockey’s garage
says a lot about the big man. It was mid-1997, Nelson’s marriage had
fallen apart and he was broke paying child support. He asked Hockey
if he could move from the room he rented in the house to the shed to
save cash.

Hockey not only agreed — he began to take an active interest in
Nelson’s welfare. Calls were made to Nelson’s old mates asking them
to keep an eye on him.

When Hockey went overseas, he brought back new running shoes for Nelson
to give to his own children, and refused payment for them. And the next
year — when Hockey was promoted by John Howard and Nelson wasn’t —
Hockey asked his dad to go around and check that his mate was OK.

"He was in tears because his son had been promoted and I hadn’t —
that’s the kind of person, the kind of family they are," Nelson
reflected yesterday. "Joe is decent, fair, generous, kind and
thoughtful. He can also be tough and he can be a thorough bastard if
he has to be."

High praise, especially given that Hockey voted for Malcolm Turnbull
as he deposed Nelson for the leadership in August last year.

There are a mountain of such stories about Joe Hockey. Acts of
kindness, big and small, often unbidden and many unheralded. The car
he offered to deposed Liberal MP Ross Cameron as his marriage broke
up. The refuge he provided at his farm outside Cairns for a young
Aboriginal girl who had been raped at Aurukun. The call he made to
public servant Godwin Grech at the peak of the OzCar crisis to check
if he was OK. And on and on it goes.

That he has a big heart is without question. Whether his intellect and
work ethic are equally colossal is a topic of greater dispute. His
friends and former ch in Sydney yesterday, the former head of the
Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Max Moore-Wilton, was heard
to describe Hockey as a "half-wit". Clearly not everyone is a fan.

There are two persistent criticisms of Joe Hockey. One is that he
speaks before he thinks. The other is that he is not across the
detail. On the first charge, his backers concede the point — but
argue it works for him.

"It goes hand in hand with being a passionate person," his former
chief of staff Matt Hingerty observes. "Joe wants to be honest. He
wears his heart on his sleeve and the more Machiavellian practitioners
of the political arts would say that’s a weakness; I’d say that is
a strength, it’s why the punters like him. He’s passionate and prone
to saying what he thinks."

The command of detail is more hotly contested between friend and
foe. His supporters note his ministerial career was full of challenges
requiring a grasp of technicalities: driving a major overhaul of the
tourism industry with his white paper; conquering obscure points of
industrial relations law to craft the Fairness Test backdown when
he was workplace minister; understanding the complexities of merging
six agencies into one as human services minister.

Critics beg to differ. They concede he is good at the punchy political
line — but accuse him of not having a clear and consistent political
philosophy. "He can come across as quite compelling and articulate
but you reflect on what he said afterwards and there’s not a lot to
hang on to," says one. "He tends to string together these great lines,
but when you look at the totality of it — what does he really stand
for? — and it doesn’t seem like much."

If opinions part on such matters, they converge again on the question
of Hockey’s considerable charm. He has an easy knack with people. He
is enormously likeable. And he is famous for his friendships across
the political aisle.

First there was all that television camaraderie with Kevin Rudd
on Sunrise — until Liberal strategists felt it was giving t abor
headkicker Anthony Albanese. Then there is his fondness for Bob Hawke,
who quipped when he learnt that Hockey was to become a father for
the third time: "Time to put the cue back in the rack, son."

To get a sense of Joe Hockey, look at the family tree. It is
a merging of two cultures. There is the mercantile tale of his
Armenian-Palestinian father Richard, who arrived in Australia in 1948
with nothing and built a career in real estate from scratch. His mother
is North Shore, cashmere and pearls, a big-hearted former model who
defied her own mother to date the "wog" behind the deli counter.

Like Rudd, Hockey has acquired wealth through the business aptitude
of his wife. A former Sydney Swans physio, Melissa Babbage is head of
foreign exchange and global finance at Deutsche Bank. They have two
children, Xavier and Adelaide, and a third due on October 19. They
mean the world to Hockey, and he is an attentive father and husband.

As Hockey’s political star has risen, so has the intensity of Labor’s
attacks on him. They’ve branded him "Sloppy Joe" — a slur aimed
not just at his size (a technique the Coalition used on Kim Beazley,
incidentally) but on his reputation for toil and detail.

A few weeks ago the ALP put about research suggesting voters were
dubious about his work ethic and eye for detail. He insists such
slings don’t wound him personally, but he understands they will only
intensify if he gains more traction politically.

Hockey is a sharper politician than the man he hopes to succeed in
time — but not just yet. Unlike Malcolm Turnbull, who is smart and
terrifyingly well-read but can get bogged down in the detail, Hockey
can deliver a cut-through line.

But to date he has shown no sign of the mongrel instinct when it
comes to leadership.

Last year some backers urged him to move to state politics, where
he would become premier in a canter at the 2012 election. Hockey
was said to be open to the draft, but refused to move against Barry
O’Farrell. State MPs didn’t want blood on the floor, and the ide .

Hockey has made it clear to those urging him to replace Turnbull
that he doesn’t want bloodshed at a federal level either. He won’t
challenge, but he would be prepared to accept the job if the post
became vacant. Turnbull, of course, shows no sign of willingly
giving way.

How the issue will resolve itself still has a long way to run. But
his fans have no doubt that he has the pull to make it happen one day.

"There are leaders who have the ability to build momentum and those
who don’t," observes Cameron. "One of the magical factors is the
ability to make other people want to be on their team — I think Joe
has that in spades."
