Statement from the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) on the Alarming Current Events in Syria

Aysor, Armenia
Oct 12 2019

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) released a statement on October 11 about Turkish military invasion in northeastern regions of Syria. The statement reads:

The AGBU Central Board and our worldwide membership are following with alarm the developments in Syria, specifically the military invasion by Turkey in its northeast regions. Reports from our local chapters and communities indicate a mounting humanitarian crisis and new waves of refugees. The situation requires an immediate response from the international community and relief organizations.

We take note of the official statement by the Armenian Foreign Ministry, the Catholicos of All Armenians and Supreme Patriarch Karekin II, and Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia Aram I calling on the international community to act without delay to restore the shaken international peace in the region.

As descendants of survivors of the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the predecessors of the present Turkish regime in 1915, we know too well the human toll such aggression can take. AGBU appeals to the Turkish authorities to immediately stop the invasion and aggression against the Syrian people, which is eerily similar to some of the Ottoman Empire’s actions more than a century ago. We call for the international community to hold Turkey responsible for its actions, recognizing that such action in 1915 would have meant a markedly different history for the Armenian people.

Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) is the world’s largest non-profit organization devoted to upholding the Armenian heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs. Each year, AGBU is committed to making a difference in the lives of 500,000 people across Armenia, Artsakh and the Armenian diaspora. Since 1906, AGBU has remained true to one overarching goal: to create a foundation for the prosperity of all Armenians. To learn more visit .

Armenia’s justice minister denies allegations of biased treatment of judicial authority

ARKA, Armenia
Sept 27 2019

YEREVAN, September 27. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Justice Minister Rustam Badasyan denied today allegations of biased treatment of judicial authority by the government.

Earlier this year Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that courts were the remnants of the former corrupt authorities and that people had no trust in the judiciary and therefore it lacked legitimacy.  He said the time came for a surgical intervention with all judges to be subjected to a thorough vetting during a “transitional” period.’

Later, on September 16, Pashinyan stated that solving the problems of the judicial system was still a priority, however, it should be solved not by “surgical intervention”, of which he had spoken earlier, but by institutional transformations. Pashinyan said also he counted on the assistance of Armenia’s international partners in implementing the judiciary reform which he said is the “second and most important stage of the revolution.”

“The prime minister’s statements should be viewed in context, and not presented as pressure on all judges or the entire judicial system. There is no bias against the judiciary, and disciplinary proceedings will only be instituted if a petition is submitted to the High Judicial Council and if we  consider the violations very serious,” Badasyan said.

He said the Ministry of Justice is initiating a process of judicial and legal reforms designed for 2019-2023, which will be extended also to related structures, including the Prosecutor General’s Office, the investigative staff, the Judicial Enforcement Service, etc.

According to Badasyan, all measures are aimed at increasing public confidence in the judicial  system through transitional justice, election reforms and other changes. He also pointed out the need to increase the availability of courts and the introduction of e-justice, which would significantly accelerate judicial procedures.

“That is why we attach importance to the introduction and use of electronic tools, as they will significantly reduce the burden on the courts and  litigation processes,” Badasyan said. The minister noted that judges who faithfully fulfill their duties will receive material support and social guarantees and will be able to continue their work.

“We are being criticized for concentration on the past, but this is the result of misunderstanding of the transitional justice. We intend to identify all corruption phenomena that did not contribute to the development of the economy and justice and introduce mechanisms to exclude them,” Badasyan said. -0-

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 23, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says the attempts to ascribe the revolution to other people are disrespect to the Armenian people. He is confident the Armenian people did the revolution, Pashinyan told reporters in Los Angeles.

“The truth is the following: I personally did one thing – I said I think that we have a situation that is problematic, I personally take a step for this situation, those who have steps, can do that. And it turned out that many people have steps to take. It has been created and formed by the people. The people of Armenia carried out the revolution. Yes, I did my step, but if the others didn’t do that, nothing would happen”, the PM said, adding that the authors of conspiracy theory circulate versions according to which the revolution was planned somewhere, the place where usually the famous revolutions are being planned.

Pashinyan urged all sides to calm down because those who were in Armenia and not in their offices, know who did the revolution and how. The PM said the revolution took place in a live broadcast, and this story has not just started, it has a long history and has been created, formed and taken place before everybody’s eyes. “There was a time when this story was followed by 5 people, and then by 50, 500 and later by all Armenians. This revolution has been done by the Armenian people. And those who want to ascribe the copyright of the Armenian people to others, to foreigners, just show disrespect to the Armenian people. They thought in this way in the past, the result of their rule has been so, they thought that the Armenian people do not have an identity, a will and goals, that they are manageable people. They were used to that the people should not decide who must become an MP in the elections. No, this will not happen anymore. The Armenian people have statehood, identity and dignity, and those who want to mix Soros or other things, just want to insult the dignity of the Armenian people”, Pashinyan said.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan arrived in the United States on a working visit.

What would I like for the prime minister of my country to convey to the US authorities? Former Prime Minister of Armenia Aram Sargsyan, who is Chairman of the Republic Party, asked this question in a Facebook post.

“Armenia is a sovereign and developing state,” he added, in particular. “And having economic revolution and the diversification of national security on its agenda, it proposes to discuss cooperation [in several domains] (…).

“Armenia is ready to discuss options to buy American weapons (…), and to make it clear to the USA that the Armenian side is definitely going to oppose the [Russian FM Sergey] Lavrov plan [toward resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict], and it needs US support—at least not to obstruct.

“And several dozen more matters that cannot be voiced, but shall be discussed so that we have specificity and move forward.”

Euro 2021 qualifiers: Republic of Ireland 1-0 Armenia.

Tottenham’s Troy Parrott marked his Under-21s debut with a first-half winner as the Republic of Ireland defeated Armenia 1-0 in Tallaght.

The 17-year-old striker applied a close-range finish following brilliant wing play from Aaron Connolly as the hosts dominated the encounter.

The result leaves Stephen Kenny’s side top of Euro 2021 qualifying Group One having won their opening two fixtures.

They will take on Sweden in Kalmar on Tuesday.

Parrott, who was named in Tottenham’s 25-man Champions League squad on Wednesday, delivered on debut but in truth it was left winger Connolly who was the star, causing the Armenian defence a world of trouble in an inspired first-half display.

The Brighton youngster nearly created the opening goal after 16 minutes, jinking down the flank before finding Adam Idah who was denied by goalkeeper Sevak Aslanyan.

Parrott’s opener after the half-hour mark was just reward for the Republic’s dominance, with the hosts perhaps unfortunate not to be further ahead at the break.

Captain Jayson Molumby went close to doubling the lead from close range before Parrott’s effort from the edge of the area came back off the post.

Armenia struggled to consistently put their hosts under pressure but did have chances through Rudik Mkrtchyan and Karen Melkonyan, who forced Kellehr into a smart stop with 20 minutes remaining.
