PRIME MINISTER AND IRANIAN AMBASSADOR DISCUSS BOOSTING
COOPERATION

YEREVAN, MAY 6, ARMENPRESS: Prime minister Tigran
Sarkisian received today Iranian ambassador, Seyed Ali
Saghayan, for discussion of a wide scope of issues
relating to both countries’ efforts to expand their
partnership relationships.
The government press office said the two men
discussed also a set of other issues on launching new
projects along with those in process.
`The Islamic Republic of Iran gives its full
support to new president of Armenia and your
government. It also supports all directions which are
deemed as priorities by your government’s program,’
the ambassador was quoted by the government press
office as saying.
Both men agreed that the annual $200 million worth
trade and the economic partnership level in general
are not satisfactory failing to comply with high level
political relations between Iran and Armenia.
They both underlined the importance of mutual
investments and stepped up contacts between Iranian
and Armenian businessmen. They agreed also that the
existing cooperation between Armenian and Iranian
provinces can be expanded as well.
The ambassador spoke about two major international
events that will be hosted soon by Iran- an
international conference on transit transportation and
a conference on urban issues asking the Armenian prime
minister to send Armenian ministers to participate in
both.
The prime minister promised to send Armenian
transport and communication and urban ministers to
Tehran to take part in both events.
The two men then emphasized the opening of consular
services in Iranian Tebriz and Armenian Kapan. They
also referred to a joint session of the
Iranian-Armenian economic cooperation commission,
slated for summer. The ambassador stressed also
cooperation with countries in transition in the face
of global rise of food prices in terms of mitigating
its aftereffects. He said, particularly, that in this
context Iran and Armenia can expand their agricultural
cooperation.
`We are eager and we would do everything in our
power to deepen our relations with the neighboring
Iran and raise them to a higher level which stems from
both nations’ interests. On one hand that will beef up
our countries’ national security and on the other hand
it will promote economic progress,’ Tigran Sarkisian
said.

Community gathers to remember Armenian Genocide at Encino service

BY TIFFANY CARTER

Hundreds of locals packed Encino’s Holy Martyrs Armenian Elementary
and Ferrahian School’s gymnasium on April 20, in one of many
commemorations held throughout the San Fernando Valley to mark the
93rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The genocide is also known as the Armenian Holocaust, in which nearly
two million Armenians were systematically massacred and driven out of
Turkey, during and immediately after World War I. Under the Muslim
Turks’ rule, Armenians living within the Ottoman Empire carried out a
policy to eliminate the area’s Christian population. Armenians around
the world recognize this period every year on April 24.

At Holy Martyrs, young and old joined together to recall this dark
moment in their history, while making sure to look toward the future.

`We carry on their memory and celebrate their survival,’ said Mico
Melkonian, who attended the event, of those who lived during that
time. `We have to teach our kids the ugly side of humanity and how you
can rise from the ashes. That’s why this day is so important.’

While much of the event was conducted in Armenian, some shared their
messages for the future in English.

Speaker Harout Keosian, Esq. said that although Turkey still refuses
to acknowledge the displacement and deaths of its Christian citizens
between 1915 and 1918, `there must be consequences¦If this
continues to go unpunished, [future genocides] will be repeated, as
we’ve seen in Cambodia and Rwanda.’

This belief was echoed by others in attendance. Steve Dadeian is a
local member of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), an
advocacy group that promotes genocide awareness in America through
education and politics. As a member, Dadeian said, `Armenians want
justice and for America to pressure Turkish officials to acknowledge
this happened to us.’

While the program’s theme was somber, there were some lighter
contributions from the school’s arm dance and music groups.

Few survivors are alive today to give first-person accounts of what
they endured, but for their descendants, the stories will live on
through oral and written history.

City Councilmember Dennis Zine, who has been on the Los Angeles City
Council for seven years, said he is proud to be the `first of Middle
Eastern decent to hold this position in 200 years.’

`My parents came here from Beirut, Lebanon, so I am very sensitive to
the concern of the community, and I know how important it is for me to
show my support,’ Zine added.

Event organizer Vic Melkonian’s grandfather survived the Armenian
holocaust. He said he remembers his grandfather telling him how the
Armenian women, even under such horrific persecution, `would bake
bread and make crosses in the dough to represent the sign of
Christianity.’

Melkonian’s greatest hope is that the younger generations `don’t
forget.’

Production Of Light Industry Declines By About 15% In Armenia In 200

PRODUCTION OF LIGHT INDUSTRY DECLINES BY ABOUT 15% IN ARMENIA IN 2007 ON PREVIOUS YEAR

Noyan Tapan
April 30, 2008

YEREVAN, APRIL 30, NOYAN TAPAN. 32 companies of light industry, which
were subjected to monitoring by the RA ministry of economy in 2007,
manufactured production of 8.1 bln drams (over 3.2 mln USD) in 2007,
or by 15% less than in 2006 when their production amounted to 9.5 bln
drams. NT correspondent was informed by Armen Yeganian, head of the
ministry’s territorial economic development unit that the decline
was mainly conditioned by the fact that the branch mostly operates
by the customs mode "temporary import for processing" and production
volumes depend on foreign orders. In 2007, sales of these enterprises’
production made 8.2 bln drams (in 2006 – 9.3 bln drams), while their
exports made 5.9 bln drams (in 2006 – 7.3 bln drams).

According to A. Yeganian, normal operation of the light industry
is ensured thanks to Hayas Group garment factory, Arshaluys OJSC,
Luxe shoe factory and several other big enterprises. He said that
local production is mainly competitive in international market, with
export promotion being one of the directions of the ministry’s policy.

The ministry has developed a draft 3-year state program of assistance
to handmade carpet making. The draft in particular envisages such
measures as financial support to operating enterprises, assistance with
production export, and organization of exhibitions and advertising.

A. Yeganian underlined the necessity to maintain the development rates
of the handmade carpet making and to attract foreign investments to
this sector. In his words, about 10 handmade carpet making enterprises
currently operate in Armenia.
