Absence Of A Middle Class In Kyrgyzstan Resulted In Upheaval

ABSENCE OF A MIDDLE CLASS IN KYRGYZSTAN RESULTED IN UPHEAVAL

ArmInfo
2010-04-29 13:09:00

ArmInfo. Mass disorders in Kyrgyzstan, which led to an upheaval, are
a result of absence of a middle class in the country and isolation of
the political elite from the wider population, representative of OSCE
Office in Yerevan Grzegorz Michalski said today during a roundtable
in the Armenian Center for National and International Studies.

According to him, role of the middle class is a binding link between
the elite and the lower society. Isolation of the ruling establishment
from the society and the clan system in Kyrgyzstan are the main
reasons for the turmoil in the country", Michalski said and added
since Kyrgyzstan is an agrarian and poor country, the economic policy
conducted by the authorities aggravated the social tension even more.

To recall, over 90 people died and about 1500 suffered as a result of
the mass disorders in Kyrgyzstan. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and his
family left the capital city. A government of people’s trust, headed
by the opposition leader Roza Otunbayeva, was created in the country.
