Turkish journalists paid tribute to Armenian Genocide victims

16:14 / 12/19/2009 A group of Turkish journalists, that arrived in
Armenia, this morning visited Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex to pay
tribute and lay flowers to the eternal light, NEWS.am correspondent
informs.

Thereupon, they went to the Armenian Genocide Museum and familiarized
themselves with its history, objectives and programs.
The director of Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan said
that the journalists were interested in Armenian Genocide 100th
anniversary events and Armenia’s participation in Armenian-Turkish
historians’ sub-committee.
Demoyan reckons there is nothing wrong with speaking his mind freely
in any format, but his compelling stand is impossibility to discuss
Armenian Genocide. He underlined that Armenia freely voices its
stance, whereas Turkish representatives cannot do so fearing to be
condemned under 301 article.

According to him, the number of virtual and real visits to Genocide
Museum increased since September, 2008. Over two hundred people take
the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum virtual tour daily mostly
from the U.S. and Turkey. This year the museum hosted 3.000 Turkish
people.

Baku. Elnur Mammadli – APA. Presentation ceremony of the website
prepared by Academy of Public Administration under the President
of Azerbaijan was held, APA reports. Rector of the
Academy of Public Administration Seyfaddin Gandilov said the website
had been prepared by the academy together with UNESCO Center and
"Friendship" Youth Coordination Center and with the support of the
Council of State Support for NGOs.

Vice-speaker of the parliament Bahar Muradova said the injustice
concerning Karabakh continues and it is the duty of everyone to inform
the world about the truths.

"Sometimes individual and public activity can draw the attention of
the world community more than the official activity. We meet with the
heads of various organizations, draw their attention to the problem. A
number of websites on Karabakh have been launched and some work has
been done. But this is not enough. The process should continue until
the problem is solved," he said.

According to the chairman of the Council of State Support for NGOs
Azay Guliyev, a new stage has begun in the information war between
Azerbaijan and Armenia. Therefore, there are greater tasks ahead and
the website should do more.

"The website should also cover the state’s policy on Karabakh,"
he said.

Following the speeches, the website was presented.

SAYYED KHAMENEI WARNS ISRAEL OF CRUSHING DEFEAT IN ANY WAR ON GAZA

One year after Israel’s aggression on Gaza, the Supreme Leader of
the Islamic Revolution said should Israel start a new armed conflict
against Gazans, it would suffer a much heavier blow. Speaking during
a meeting with visiting Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, Ayatollah Sayyed
Ali Khamenei pledged Iran’s unwavering support for Palestinians.

"One of the main reasons behind the enmity of the global hegemony
toward the Islamic Republic is the Palestinian issue," said the Supreme
Leader on Tuesday. "If Iran had backtracked about the Palestinian
issue, much of such hostilities would have ceased to exist; however,
regarding this matter we stand fast," Ayatollah Khamenei added.

The Leader blasted Arab states for failing to support the Palestinian
cause, saying, "certain Arabs under the guise of Muslims who betray
the people of Palestine" are a major concern regarding this matter.

Ayatollah Khamenei went on to say that the only solution to the
Palestinian crisis is "resistance, having trust in God and taking
action."

Calling to mind the plight of the people of Gaza during a deadly
Israeli assault in 2008, the Leader warned Israel against waging
another war in the region.

"If the Israeli regime launches another war against the people of
Gaza, they will receive a much heavier blow and suffer a more crushing
defeat than before," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

For his part, Mashaal, who has been visiting Iran since Sunday,
expressed appreciation at Iran’s support for the Palestinian people,
and stated that Hamas would continue its fight. Speaking at a news
conference earlier today, Mashaal said that Islamic resistance groups
would back Iran if it was attacked by Israel.

Israel’s three-week offensive against Gaza in 2008 left nearly 1,300
Palestinians dead, more than half of them civilians, according to
medical sources. The Israeli assault led to the destruction of schools,
mosques, houses, UN compounds and government buildings.

No One Accuses Turkish Premier Of Perpetrating Armenian Genocide

NO ONE ACCUSES TURKISH PREMIER OF PERPETRATING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

/PanARMENIAN.Net/
14.12.2009 19:50 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Nobody is personally accusing the Turkish Premier
for perpetrating the Armenian Genocide, according to Head of Modus
Vivendi Center Ara Papyan. Although present-day Turks are not guilty
of their ancestors’ crimes, they are yet responsible for them just
as today’s Germans, he said.

At that, he noted that responsibility is manifested not only by the
outright condemnation of the criminal act itself, but also by the
hundreds of billions in aid that have been granted and that continue
to be granted to Israel.

"Even if Erdogan’s forebears were, say, not directly involved in the
Armenian Genocide, indubitably however, his political forebears most
certainly perpetrated the first genocide of the twentieth century,"
Ara Papyan said, adding unless the Turkish people condemn the Armenian
Genocide, they are at the very least accomplice to the first genocide
of the twentieth century.

Armenian Assembly participates in panel on protocols

Armenian Assembly participates in panel on protocols

Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) Board of Trustees Member,
Peter Kezirian and Assembly Western Region Director Yeghig Keshishian
participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Armenian Law Student
Association (ALSA) of Southwestern Law School in conjunction with the
Law School’s Diversity Affairs Office regarding the recently signed
protocols to establish normal relations without preconditions between
the Republics of Armenia and Turkey. The panel also included Steve
Dadaian and Vicken Sonentz Papazian representing the Armenian National
Committee of America (ANCA).

Following the opening remarks by Stella Pogosyan, President of the
Armenian Law Student Association at Southwestern, the Assembly and
ANCA each discussed the protocols. Keshishian opened his discussion
looking at the geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus, noting
that the Republic of Armenia, since its independence in 1991, has
sought formal diplomatic relations with Turkey without preconditions.
Turkey meanwhile has insisted on preconditions such as concessions on
Nagorno Karabakh and demands that Armenia renounce international
affirmation of the Armenian Genocide. Turkey’s 15-year plus blockade
of Armenia also reflects part of Turkey’s strategy to attempt to
isolate and marginalize Armenia.

Armenia has withstood Turkey’s hostile actions and for the first time,
Turkey has publicly committed to normalize relations with Armenia and
lift its blockade. Despite Turkey’s continued counterproductive
statements, Turkish demands for concessions on Nagorno Karabakh are
not contained within the protocols.

Referring to the actual text of the protocols, Keshishian noted that
they do not threaten the veracity of the Armenian Genocide, nor do
they require Armenia to abdicate its treaty rights on territorial
issues or require concessions on Nagorno Karabakh as many have
speculated.

Steve Dadaian, speaking on behalf of the ANCA, attempted to use legal
arguments to argue that the Protocols undercut particular interests of
the Armenian Republic and accused the current government of not having
the position or moral authority to deal with these concerns. The
analysis, however, requires Protocol opponents to read into the
document a number of arguments that have been explicitly rejected by
the two countries. Dadaian also discussed the notion of bringing a
legal claim under the auspices of the International Court of Justice
(ICJ) to settle claims regarding the Armenian Genocide. While the
United States filed a document in 1951 before the ICJ affirming the
Armenian Genocide, Dadaian omitted that Turkey cannot be compelled to
submit to ICJ jurisdiction.

During the question and answer period, the Southwestern Law students
raised a number of insightful issues on both the strategic and legal
elements of the Armenian-Turkish relationship. Kezirian, drawing upon
his international legal experience, addressed issues tied to treaty
interpretation, Armenian national interests and the benefits generated
by lifting the Turkish blockade and formal diplomatic recognition. In
essence, with normalized relations, Armenia will be in control of its
own economic as well as political destiny.

Papazian and Dadaian argued that the Protocols are poorly drafted and
will help Turkey’s accession to the European Union, which require open
borders. However, Turkey has been in this process for more than three
decades and the rapprochement process allows Armenia to take control
of its own future, rather than simply rely on the good wishes of
others. Open borders is and has already been an important strategic
objective for the Republic; Turkey has tried to leverage this need to
force Armenian concessions on Karabakh and the Genocide. The Armenian
people and its governments have withstood this pressure and are now
poised to achieve a major objective without any concessions.
"The Armenian-Turkish Protocols Speaker Event successfully achieved
its goal by presenting students an objective analysis of the issues,
and allowed them to formulate their own opinions," stated ALSA
President Stella Pogosyan. "Only through such open, honest and
balanced talks can we achieve progress and results. We thank each of
our four speakers for their participation: Yeghig Keshishian, Peter
Kezirian, Steve Dadaian, and Viken Sonentz Papazian," Pogosyan added.

"It was one of the most important and beneficial events the
Southwestern Armenian Law Student Association and the Southwestern Law
School’s Diversity Affairs Office held this academic year," concluded
Pogosyan.
