Good Morning, Oscar: September 25

In today’s roundup of Oscar news `n’ notes from around the web,
Charles Darwin survives, Mr. Fox gets a fantastic slot and the
foreign-film race gets crowded.

Variety’s roundup of the foreign-language race gets one title wrong
(Armenia’s entry is sometimes called `A Magician’s Autumn’ and
sometimes `Autumn of the Magician,’ but it’s definitely not `A
Magician’s Nephew’), misses the fact that Serbia has changed its mind,
and includes capsule descriptions of only 15 of the 40 choices
announced so far. In Contention has a bigger list. So do indieWIRE
and The Film Experience.

More festival awards to give a nudge to more Oscar campaigns: at the
Gotham Independent Film Awards, November 30 in New York City, the
career achievement honorees will be Kathryn Bigelow (in the thick of
the race after directing `The Hurt Locker’), Natalie Portman (a dark
horse candidate in director Jim Sheridan’s `Brothers’), Stanley Tucci
(certainly a supporting-actor contender for `Julie and Julia,’ with
`The Lovely Bones’ on the way) and producers Tim Bevan and Eric
Fellner (with likely best-picture nominee `A Serious Man’). (Tucci

`The Fantastic Mr. Fox,’ director Wes Anderson’s first foray into
animation, will open the AFI Fest in Hollywood on October 30. With the
animated-feature category likely limited to three nominees, it could
face quite a battle with the likes of `Up,’ `Ponyo’ and `Coraline’
already in the mix. (indieWIRE)

Newmarket Films rescues `Creation’ from awards-season limbo by
acquiring the rights to the Charles Darwin picture that opened Toronto
to mixed reviews. They’ll likely have an uphill battle getting it into
the race. (Variety)

Gerard Kennedy does an early preview of the Oscar craft categories,
figures that frontrunners `Up in the Air’ and `Precious’ are not
liable to be big contenders in those categories
`Inglourious Basterds,’ `District 9,’ `Nine’ and a few others, and
concludes that it’s too early to know much. (In Contention)

Better late than never: Nancy Kriparos’ Toronto faves are `Up in the
Air,’ `Bright Star,’ `Dogtooth,’ `Mother and Child,’ `Precious,’ `The
Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus,’ Michael Sheen in `The Damned United,’
Paul Bettany in `Creation,’ Amanda Seyfried in `Chloe,’Matt Damon in
`The Informant!’ and Robin Wright Penn in `The Private Lives of Pippa
Lee.’ (Awards Daily)

Newly appointed Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin intends
to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan, September 25.

Hurriyet daily reports. According to Turkish mass media, the focal
point of his visit is Armenian-Turkish relations’ normalization.

two states’. Turkey will never infringe upon Azerbaijan’s interests. We
will always back Azerbaijan," he said.

‘PROTOCOLS SIGNED BY SERZH SARGSYAN HAVE NO LEGAL FORCE’: ARMAN MELIKIAN

Armenia

"The last presidential elections in Armenia can not be trusted, and any
document signed by Serzh Sargsyan cannot have legal force, which the
signature of legitimate authorities would have," Nagorno-Karabakh’s
ex-Foreign Minister Arman Melikian stated during a press conference
today.

"Thus, I think no one in Armenia would take on the responsibility of
signing the Protocols," Melikian said.

According to him, there is an occasion, an opportunity, and pressure to
stir Armenian-Turkish relations. That is clear. How will the governing
authorities get out of that situation? Melikian asks.

It is that lack of legitimacy, according to Melikian, that propels
Sargsyan to begin the process of ratifying the Protocols, which is
generally absurd:

"That is the reason why he is trying to put responsibility on the
parliament, which is elected by the nation, and he is going to meet
with leaders of political parties…."

Noting that, in the case where the Kars Treaty is not announced void,
Armenia may become the political and economic attache of the most
powerful country in the region: a fate that Arman Melikian doesn’t
wish for Armenia.

AHMADINEJAD: IRAN DOES NOT WANT ATOMIC WEAPONS

/PanARMENIAN.Net/
18.09.2009 20:06 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has
rejected a report that it conceals a document proving that Iran
is secretly developing atomic weapons and delivery vehicles. "The
IAEA has no concrete evidence that the Islamic republic had or has
a secret program to develop nuclear weapons," the representative of
the agency said.

Earlier, APdisseminated a release that IAEA’s experts are certain that
Iran already has the means to build a nuclear bomb and is currently
developing rocket carriers. AP recalled a secret document of IAEA. This
document is the clearest evidence that IAEA members share the views
of the U.S. in respect to Tehran’s atomic capabilities. Perhaps this
document is an appendix to the report, which, according to Washington,
deliberately withheld by the IAEA Director Mohamed ElBaradei. It
allegedly says that IAEA has "sufficient evidence" of Iran’s ability
to build an atomic bomb and overcome difficulties of elaboration of
delivery vehicles fitted with nuclear warheads.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in an interview
with NBC U.S. television said that Iran does not want atomic
weapons. "There’s no need. The events in the world are developing in
our expected scenario. Roll-out by Iran its nuclear program may not
be a matter of discussion", Ahmadinejad said.

On October 1, five countries, permanent members of UN Security Council
and Germany intend to discuss with Iran its nuclear program. The
representative of Iran to the IAEA Ali Ashgar Soltanieh called this
meeting a great chance. According to him, the Iranian nation has
opened the door, and the West should immediately take advantage of it.
