Erdogan: Turkey and Armenia appear to have got off to unhealthy start
31.01.2010 16:16 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ We appear to have got off to an unhealthy start,
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview to
Euronews TV channel.

`Well, we appear to have got off to an unhealthy start. What are we
negotiating about? What are we going to do? Armenia should once again
take this into consideration, because we fulfilled our protocol
commitments,’ he stressed.

Yet, despite the above, the Premier emphasized Turkey’s readiness to
continue with the process. `Both sides have road maps. The process
will continue. We are fully prepared and sincere, and will proceed in
the same way as we have so far,’ he concluded.

The Protocols aimed at normalization of bilateral ties and opening of
the border between Armenia and Turkey were signed in Zurich by
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish
counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on October 10, 2009, after a series of
diplomatic talks held through Swiss mediation.
On January 12, 2010, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of
Armenia found the protocols conformable to the country’s Organic Law.

Commenting on the decision of the Armenian Constitutional Court, the
Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that `the decision contains
preconditions and restrictive provisions which impair the letter and
spirit of the Protocols.’

‘The decision undermines the very reason for negotiating these
Protocols as well as their fundamental objective. This approach cannot
be accepted on our part. Turkey, in line with its accustomed
allegiance to its international commitments, maintains its adherence
to the primary provisions of these Protocols. We expect the same
allegiance from the Armenian Government,’ the Ministry said.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Obvious progress is observed in Armenian diplomacy:
Armenia managed to separate RA-Turkey rapprochement process from
Karabakh conflict settlement issue, Social Democrat Hunchakian Party
member Vardan Khachatryan said.

As he stated during joint news conference with RPA member Karen
Avagyan, Turkey and Azerbaijan still continue pressure.

At the same time he noted that the language of ultimatum negotiations
are conducted with, will most probably hamper their normal course.

"Turkey needs to be reminded: Armenia is not one of its provinces, so
the language of preconditions will be ineffective here," Khachatryan
said.

Karen Avagyan stated, for his part, that Armenia adhered to its course
throughout the process of negotiations with Turkey, which attempts
to shift the responsibility for talks-related problems on Yerevan.

Unemployment Continues To Rise In Armenia

UNEMPLOYMENT CONTINUES TO RISE IN ARMENIA

Tert.am
16:43 ~U 21.01.10

As of data collected up to December 31, 2009, unemployment in Armenia,
as compared to 2008, has risen by 0.8%, and is currently at 7.1%,
said Sona Harutyunyan, head of the State Employment Service Agency.

According to her, a number of issues and challenges in the area of
unemployment in 2009 were due to the global economic crisis.

During the press conference today, Harutyunyan presented some facts
from the preceding year: the agency was able to secure employment
for 9,400 individuals who were previously unemployed. Out of those,
37% had been enrolled in the state agency’s programs.

"Our issues are to support both those who are unemployed to find
work in their field and employers to find staff – and with that,
supporting economic development," she said.

The state agency director said that in 2009, 4,960 individuals found
temporary employment, while 33,300 individuals have received support
through the agency’s programs (for which the Armenian government had
allocated 1 billion 400 million AMD). A number of programs have also
been implemented thanks to the support of international agencies.
