66% Of Women Admit To Being Subjected To Different Forms Of Domestic

SIXTY-SIX PERCENT OF WOMEN ADMIT TO BEING SUBJECTED TO DIFFERENT FORMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

ARMENPRESS
Sep 17, 2007

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 17, ARMENPRESS: According to a survey, commissioned
by the Women’s Rights Center, a non-governmental Armenian organization,
poverty is the number one cause of domestic violence.

More specifically, 79 percent of questioned women admitted that lack
of education increases the possibility of domestic violence.

The poll was conducted by Turpanjian polling center. It has found
that 66 percent of women, aged 18-75, were subjected to psychological
violence, 46 percent sometimes or frequently, while 27 percent were
subjected to slight physical violence and 12 percent to heavy physical
violence.

Only 29 percent of respondents said they sought a help, more frequently
from other family members. Only 6 percent sought help from police.

However, pollsters from the Turpanjian center believe these figures do
not represent the true picture as 14 percent of women they turned to,
refused to answer their questionnaires. Seventy-seven percent of them
explained the refusal by being busy, 18 percent said the subject did
not interest them and only 3 percent feared their husbands would get
angry if learned.

The survey was conducted across Armenia to learn the women’s reaction
to domestic violence.

Ehsaii denies permitting sale of clothes bearing his calligraphy

TEHRAN, Sept. 15 (MNA) — Master of calligraphy Mohammad Ehsaii denied
having given permission to the Sudreh Institute to sell clothes
bearing his calligraphy artwork, the Persian service of IRNA reported.

Some news agencies recently announced that the Sudreh Institute,
managed by Saed Meshki, is incorporating the calligraphy of master
Ehsaii into clothes designed to have a distinctive Iranian identity.

Ehsaii said he only gave Meshki permission to use the calligraphy work
on clothes to be presented to guests at the recent Iran Cinema
Celebration ceremony, adding, `The 400 T-shirts made for this event
did not have my signature and I did not give the Sudreh Institute
permission to sell them.’

Saleh Beheshti, who works with the institute’s design team, told the
Persian service of CHN that the first garments produced for sale by
the institute are due to be completed in a couple of months.

He explained that the designs are completely Iranian in style and the
first batch bears one hemistich of Ferdowsi’s poetry in the
calligraphy of the graphic designer Ehsaii.

Beheshti also announced that the first series of the clothes will be
displayed in an exhibit and each design will bear a label on which the
name, date of production and number of the garment has been printed.

According to Beheshti, the production of each design will be limited
to seventy garments.

On the subject of the sale of the products, Beheshti said that they
are accepting orders via internet, `Shops are not suitable outlets for
our products in the initial stages of marketing. We are planning to
identify our customers gradually. Later, we will establish shops and
sell our products in a wider range.’

Beheshti emphasized that they will probably hold exhibits of their
products in Armenia for the Christian New Year and in Dubai at Noruz.

On the choice of the name Sodreh, Beheshti explained, `Sudreh is the
name of a garment which Zoroastrians used to wear from the age of
puberty. Sodrehs were white, with short sleeves and no collar. They
were actually similar in design to today’s T-shirt. We used this name
in order to make young people aware that former generations also made
use of these kinds of garments.’

The production team consistS of graphic designers and several clothes
designers, as well as experts Ahmad Mohit-Tabatabaii, Mohammad
Beheshti, and Marjan Sheikholeslami, he concluded.

Maestro drops baton for mic

Maestro drops baton for mic

by Susan Doolan

The founder of Opera Belcanto sets aside his baton this month to take
to the stage and sing.

It’s the first time David Varjabed will perform in Barrie. Slated to
be a fundraiser for the local opera company, Varjabed is also
featuring a number of solists.

"As a singer, you always like singing and love to perform. Plus,
everybody knows me, I’m an opera singer. They don’t leave me alone,"
he said. "So I decided to do it."

Many who knew of Varjabed’s reputation as an internationally known
singer of classical music and opera had never heard the baritone
sing, because he cut back on performing after his mother died several
years ago.

Instead, he continued to teach. Two years ago, encouraged by the
communities in south Simcoe, started an opera company.

Since then, Opera Belcanto has staged seven concerts showcasing
popular songs from famous operas. Four of those concerts were held in
Barrie and a couple more are slated for the 2007-08 season.

It is opera singer, conductor and voice teacher Varjabed who has
attracted these talented singers to the professional-level,
non-profit opera company.

Many are also his students, up-and-coming opera stars including
university music students and graduates. Five of these students,
including 12-year-old Russian-born soprano Ekaterina Chelekova, will
be featured at a concert at the end of September.

The concert is a fundraiser for the opera company.

All of the singers, whether they are his students, part of Opera
Belcanto’s chorus or soloists with the company, are trained in the
Bel Canto technique. It’s an Italian voice training style of
breathing and projection that is unique to Italy, and the reason so
many of that country’s opera singers have become so famous. Varjabed
calls it a science that is highly individual to each singer.

Translated, bel canto means "beautiful singing."

Varjabed has sung professionally across the globe for three decades.
Born in Armenia, he began singing at four years old in boys’ choirs,
and at age nine, conducted an 85-member church choir.

He debuted in La Traviata in 1971, while still at school, studying
for his masters in opera performance and voice pedagogy at the
Komitas National Conservatory in Yerevan, Armenia.

He graduated with the highest honours and won a competition as the
"most promising young artist in Armenia."

Following a successful stint with the Armenian National Opera
Company, Varjabed came to Canada in 1974, at age 20, where he was
immediately accepted into the Canadian Opera Company with a five-year
contract. Once established here, he brought his wife and baby
daughter to Canada.

Since then, he’s toured Europe, the United States, the former USSR
and the Middle East.

While Varjabed was encouraged by the communities of Beeton (where the
opera company rehearses), Alliston and New Tecumseth to start Opera
Belcanto, he had additional reasons for taking it on.

He felt there was a lot of talented singers in the area that had no
place to perform and limited prospects to grow a professional career.

He said the opera company serves as a training ground and launching
pad for singers he maintains are better than the Canadian Opera
Company.

Varjabed also loves teaching and has continued to take on students
throughout his own professional career.

"I love it," he said. "I’ve seen many young people desire to be good
singers, and to bring them to a professional level is very beautiful.
It’s a duty."

Varjabed performs along with five soloists on Saturday, Sept. 29 at
First Christian Reformed Church at 33 Shirley Ave., in Barrie, 7:30
p.m.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, $20 for students under
the age of 18, available by calling 435-3730.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN. International Puppet Festival under
the title Tale Day will be held on September 6-10 in the village
of Dsegh, Lori region, on the initiative of the Armenian Center of
the Union Internationale de la Marionette (UNIMA). Armen Safarian,
the Chairman of the Center, said this in his interview to Noyan
Tapan correspondent.

According to him, this year puppet theaters’ creative groups from
Armenia, Javakhk, the Ukraine, Lithuania, and Russia will take part in
the festival being held for already the second year. 18 performances
created on the basis of tales created by various peoples will be shown
in the native village of great Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanian within
the framework of the festival.

A. Safarian said that the festival also gives newly created puppet
theaters the possibility to take part in it and to present their
performances. "One of festival’s goals is to help newly created and
young puppet theaters’ creative groups to get acquainted with the
rich experience of professional theaters and to establish immediate
contacts with them," he said.

Among Armenian regions, theater groups of Ijevan, Metsamor, Gyumri,
and Charentsavan, as well as the theater group of Khnko Aper National
Children’s Library will take part in the festival.

As the Chairman of the UNIMA Armenian Center said, the Armenian

theater will also take part in the Puppet Theaters’ International
Congress to be held next year in Australia.

BAKU: Vardan Oskanian: Armenia Expects Courageous Steps By Azerbaija

VARDAN OSKANIAN: ARMENIA EXPECTS COURAGEOUS STEPS BY AZERBAIJAN TOWARDS COMPROMISE IN NAGORNO KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT

Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
Sept 5 2007

"Further progress in the peace process hinges on unspecified
"courageous steps by Azerbaijan towards compromise," Armenia’s foreign
minister Vardan Oskanian told RFE/RL from the Belgian capital.

He said Armenia is prepared to continue the negotiating process and
listen to proposals adding that there is nothing new regarding the
settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

"At the meeting with Azerbaijani foreign minister Elmar Mammadyarov
with presence of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs this week, we simply talked
about how the existing disagreements can be overcome," "But there are
no concrete agreements. The only hope is that during their visit to
the region the mediators will reach some agreements with the leaders
[of Armenia and Azerbaijan," Oskanian stressed.

Armenian FM ruled out any impact of the elections in Armenia and
Azerbaijan in 2008 on the process of the settlement of the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict.
