Diplomatic Scandal Breaks Out Between Turkey And Israel

DIPLOMATIC SCANDAL BREAKS OUT BETWEEN TURKEY AND ISRAEL

PanARMENIAN.Net
13.01.2010 20:01 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkish-Israeli relations have been strained since
Israel’s deadly offensive in the Gaza Strip, having seen exchanges
of harsh remarks between Israeli and Turkish officials and crisis
incidents despite efforts to tone town the crisis atmosphere.

Nonetheless, Monday and Tuesday’s diplomatic kerfuffle between the two
sides was an exception, since the way Celikkol was treated by Israeli
Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon introduced an unprecedented
example of diplomatic rudeness.

Chronologically, the incident started when Ayalon summoned Celikkol
to the Knesset on Monday afternoon to express outrage over an episode
of the popular Turkish television series, "Valley of the Wolves:
Ambush," which depicted Israeli intelligence service Mossad agents
spying inside Turkey and kidnapping Turkish babies. At the beginning
of the meeting, Ayalon was seen telling the cameramen to film him
and his aide sitting on tall chairs, and Celikkol on a lower chair,
with the Israeli flag in the middle.

The ambassador was also filmed waiting in a corridor for the meeting
to begin, and when it did, he was offered nothing to drink or eat.

In Ankara, during the same hours on Monday afternoon, at a joint press
conference with visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan lashed out at Israel for violating
Lebanon’s airspace and using disproportionate force against
Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel’s response came shortly afterwards, with officials slamming
Erdogan’s "unbridled attack" and accusing him of seeking to harm ties.

"Israel reserves the right to protect its citizens against rocket
attacks and terrorism by Hamas and Hizbullah. Turkey is the last
country that should preach morality to Israel and to the Israel Defense
Forces," a statement by Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yossi
Levy said.

At the end of the tense Knesset meeting, pictures taken during the
meeting between Ayalon and Celikkol — ostensibly showing the latter
purposefully embarrassed — marked the end of the longest two days
between Israel and Turkey.

Israel’s Ambassador to Turkey Gabby Levy was summoned to the Foreign
Ministry on Tuesday morning and ordered to explain both the way
Celikkol was treated and Yossi Levy’s statement, which explicitly
blamed Turkey for being "immoral."

Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu, who was
formerly Turkey’s ambassador to Israel, told Ambassador Levy that
the treatment of Celikkol was an "unacceptable impudence," and that
"everybody should know their place."

Turkish diplomatic sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told
Today’s Zaman that the ministry is considering recalling Celikkol to
Ankara for consultations.

Turkey rejected an Israeli attempt Wednesday to make amends for
humiliating its ambassador, and threatened to bring its envoy home
if Israel didn’t deliver an apology by the evening.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon issued a statement criticizing
his own undiplomatic behavior, which included forcing Turkish
Ambassador Ahmet Oguz Celikkol to sit on a lower seat and not shaking
his hand. But the statement fell short of an apology and failed to
defuse a diplomatic feud that has further strained ties between the
once-close allies.

"They have been given time until tonight, they either fix it or
our ambassador will head for Turkey on the first flight tomorrow"
for consultations, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said. "After that,
we will make an evaluation."

Armenian Diplomacy Not To Allow Turkey To Take Broker’s Role In Kara

ARMENIAN DIPLOMACY NOT TO ALLOW TURKEY TO TAKE BROKER’S ROLE IN KARABAKH PROCESS

PanARMENIAN.Net
13.01.2010 20:44 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkey will make every possible effort to intervene
in Karabakh settlement process, but Armenian diplomacy should do its
best to prevent that, political scientist, YSU Professor Alexander
Manasyan finds.

"Armenian-Turkish relations concern only two states. Of course,
Turkey will try to get advantage of Protocols, but we must not allow
that to happen," he told today a news conference in Yerevan.

At that, he expressed belief that there will be no final document on
Karabakh by 2010.

The Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) is a de facto independent state
located in the South Caucasus, bordering on Azerbaijan to the north
and east, Iran to the south, and Armenia to the west.

After the Soviet Union established control over the area, in 1923
it formed the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) within the
Azerbaijan SSR. In the final years of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan
launched an ethnic cleansing which resulted in the Karabakh War that
was fought from 1991 to 1994.

Since the ceasefire in 1994, most of Nagorno Karabakh and several
regions of Azerbaijan around it (the security zone) remain under the
control of Nagorno Karabakh defense army.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have since been holding peace talks mediated
by the OSCE Minsk Group.

The protocols aimed at normalization of bilateral ties and opening of
the common border between Armenia and Turkey were signed in Zurich
by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish
counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on October 10, 2009, after a series of
diplomatic talks held through Swiss mediation.

Official Baku Still Poses Threat To Entire Region

OFFICIAL BAKU STILL POSES THREAT TO ENTIRE REGION

The events that took place in Baku in response to the Nagorno-Karabakh
people’s demand for self-determination was a monstrous manifestation
of Azerbaijan’s policy of strong arm and ethnic cleansing," RA Deputy
Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan stated, commenting on the tragic
events in Baku, Azerbaijan, 20 years ago. The result of Azerbaijan’s
policy was forcible displacement of 400,000 Armenians, a large-scale
military aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh, which cause human and
material losses.

"The fact that, instead of admitting its guilt and responsibility
for the crimes, Azerbaijan continues an anti-Armenian hysteria and
militant rhetoric proves that official Baku still poses a threat to
both Azerbaijani population and the entire region, Sh. Kocharyan said.

Armenian pogrom began in Baku on January 13, 1990. Azeri extremists
brutally murdered about 100 Armenians.

Vladimir Putin: The Karabakh And Armenian-Turkish Problems Should No

VLADIMIR PUTIN: THE KARABAKH AND ARMENIAN-TURKISH PROBLEMS SHOULD NOT BE TIED IN ONE PACKAGE

ArmInfo. "Russia, like no other country, is interested in
normalization of relations in the region among al the countries –
our neighbours. Numerous invisible threads bind us with Azerbaijan
and Armenia", Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin said at a joint
press-conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan
in Moscow.

He emphasized that the Russian party is interested in prompt settlement
of all the problems, including the Karabakh one. "We very much hope all
elements of shortest approaches [to the normalization] will be used
in the negotiating process and Armenia’s leadership is also on this
positive path. The two issues should not be tied in one package. It
is difficult to solve each of these problems separately, and if one
tackles them in a single package, then prospects for their settlement
will automatically become very remote. Packaging these problems
is not quite right from the practical and strategic standpoints",
V. Putin emphasized.

Along with it, he said, solution of this problem, in the first case,
depends on Armenia and Azerbaijan, in the second case – on Turkey and
Armenia. "The role of Russia here is to support any positive aimed
at solution of these two complex problems", V. Putin resumed.

Armenian Foreign Minister: Peaceful Settlement Of Karabakh Conflict

ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTER: PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF KARABAKH CONFLICT HAS NO ALTERNATIVE

ArmInfo. There is no alternative to peaceful settlement of the Karabakh
conflict, Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian said at a
joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in
Yerevan on Thursday.

The minister disagreed with the opinion that the negotiations are
stagnating. Quite on the contrary, he said, last year negotiations had
positive dynamics thanks to the active meetings of the two presidents.

Edward Nalbandian said that the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents
met 9 times last year, including 6 meetings were bilateral. He also
highlighted the statement on the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh
conflict adopted in Athens at the OSCE Ministerial Council. The
principle of peaceful resolution of the conflict is one of the
major ones alongside with the principles of the people’s right to
self-determination and territorial integrity, he said. "Armenia is for
peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. We have been constantly
declaring this and have never made any threats. There is no alternative
to the peaceful settlement," the minister said. As regards "stagnation"
of the negotiations, Edward Nalbandian said such an impression maybe
connected with the natural pause in connection with the New Year and
Christmas holidays. The minister said the process maybe reactivated
soon. In case of further positive dynamics in 2010, this will help
shifting settlement of the problem, the minister said.

The Turkish-Azerbaijani relations promote Turkey’s activeness in
Karabakh conflict settlement, said Azerbaijani deputy Asim Mollazade,
commenting on Turkey’s intensification in the Karabakh issue.

According to Mollazade, Turkey and Switzerland have signed an agreement
with Armenia on establishment of cooperation and, therefore, it needs
the release of the occupied Azerbaijani lands in the nearest future
for these agreements to come true.

"Peace and stability in the Caucasus are important for Turkey. I would
like to remind that earlier Turkey had negotiations in the United
States where Erdogan raised this issue while meeting Obama and tried
to get Washington’s support in this direction. The matter is that
if Armenians release the occupied Azerbaijani lands, it would have
become a stimulus for serious processes in the region and Turkey, by
taking part in this process, could raise its influence and contribute
to cooperation in the region", he said.

After a great start Iran’s Teymourian a forgotten man at Fulham

The Straits Times (Singapore)
January 10, 2010 Sunday

Watching and waiting;
After a great start in the English Premier League, Iran’s Teymourian
has become a forgotten man at Fulham

Terrence Voon

On a warm spring afternoon in Wigan three years ago, Andranik
Teymourian thought he could do no wrong.

The Iranian midfielder, a new signing for Sam Allardyce’s Bolton
Wanderers, had just written himself into the club’s folklore, scoring
two goals as they beat their derby rivals 3-1 in a Premiership tie at
the then-JJB Stadium.

Images of his goal celebrations, while being mobbed by ecstatic fans,
were played over and over again on Iranian television.

>From Teheran to the Reebok Stadium, Teymourian was hailed as a hero.
Now, he is a forgotten name on the wage bill at Fulham, a bit-part
player with his Premiership dream in tatters.

Last Wednesday, the 26-year-old orchestrated Iran’s destruction of the
Lions in their Asian Cup qualifier at Kallang.

He returns to Craven Cottage later this month, not knowing if he will
ever put on his boots for the first team again.

‘Most of the time I watch the games from the stands,’ he told The
Sunday Times last week. ‘I’m not involved with the team because the
first XI, to be honest with you, are doing so well.’

Fulham currently lie ninth in the league, and with midfielders like
Danny Murphy, Jonathan Greening and Chris Baird ahead of him in the
pecking order, Teymourian knows his days in London are numbered.

A move to another club, possibly outside the Premiership, is certain
in the summer.

‘I’m 26 now, and I don’t want to spend my time on the bench and watch
other people play,’ he said.

The Teheran native’s English adventure began in 2006, when he caught
the eye of Allardyce with his all-action performances at the World Cup
in Germany.

The skilful midfielder with an eye for goal was snapped up for
&pound255,000 (S $570,000) from Iranian club FC Aboomoslem on a
two-year contract.

In his two seasons at the Trotters, Teymourian made just 20
appearances, with his brace at Wigan the only goals to his name.

After Allardyce’s departure for Newcastle in 2007, he fell out of
favour with his replacement Sammy Lee, and subsequently, Gary Megson.

Teymourian was picked up on a free transfer by Fulham in 2008, and has
since made just two cameos. Last year, he was farmed out to Barnsley
for three months, making 11 appearances for the Championship side.

The introduction to English football, he recalled, was fast and furious.

‘In the Premier League, you have to be stronger and faster,’ he said.
‘That’s what they work on at every single training session, and that’s
what makes the difference in every game.’

Despite enjoying the trappings of luxury as a Premiership footballer –
he owns a house in Wimbledon and a Chrysler 300 sedan – life at Fulham
is regimental.

Teymourian wakes up at 8am every day, and makes it to the training
ground by 10.30am, where he works with the team till noon. An hour in
the gym is followed by lunch, where it is compulsory for players to
eat at the club kitchen.

‘If we don’t eat there, we are fined,’ he said.

The attention to detail, he said, is startling.

For instance, one of the five training pitches at Motspur Park is laid
with exactly the same kind of grass used at Craven Cottage. All
training sessions on the day before a home match are conducted there,
to give players a feel of the actual match day conditions.

A typical day ends at 4pm after another training session, and
Teymourian is usually in bed by 10.30pm.

On match days, players report to the stadium by 1.30pm for a 3pm
kick-off. For important ties against the likes of Manchester United or
Chelsea, they arrive an hour earlier than usual and are shown videos
of their opponents.

Despite his lack of playing time, Teymourian enjoys the camaraderie he
shares with the foreign legion at Fulham.

‘The good point of Fulham is that all the players are foreigners,’ he
said. ‘We have a couple of English players, people from Africa,
Norway, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. All of them love to smile
and laugh.’

When Fulham recorded a crushing 3-0 home win over the Red Devils last
month, the squad were given special leave by Hodgson to go out and
celebrate.

‘We went back to the hotel and then went to the disco,’ he recalled.
‘We had a really good time.’

The ethnic Armenian’s command of English has also improved in the time
he has spent in England. Sadly, his chances in the first team do not
look like improving.

His day in the sun three years ago, when he was voted Man of the
Match, is now a distant memory.

But Teymourian – who is planning to marry his Armenian girlfriend
Narineh Davitian at the end of this season – insists he does not
regret his time in England.

‘For me, it has been really amazing, because I was young when I
arrived,’ he said. ‘I’ve learnt a lot and I’ve had a chance play
against a lot of good players.’
