TEHRAN – The 16th Iran-Armenia Joint Economic Committee meeting is underway in Tehran during June 30-July 2, IRNA reported.

The Iranian Deputy Minister of Energy for Electricity Affairs Homayoun Haeri and Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan held talks in Armenia on Saturday to discuss joint projects and the economic committee meeting which kicked off in Tehran on Sunday.

Haeri visited the neighboring country just before the joint economic committee meeting, to follow up on the implementation of the project of third Iran-Armenia power transmission line and also to discuss the two countries’ joint economic committee meeting.

Grigoryan who is also the co-chair of the Joint Economic Committee, for his part mentioned the preferential tariff agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union, noting that the agreement has provided a good opportunity for both countries to develop bilateral and multilateral economic relations.

The official emphasized the importance of pursuing regional energy interactions while underlining the need for acceleration of the implementation of Iran’s third line of electricity transmission to Armenia.

The 15th Joint Economic Committee meeting between Iran and Armenia was held in the Armenian capital city of Yerevan in February 2018.

In that meeting, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian, Armenian Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources Ashot Manukyan, Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Karapetyan, Armenian Nature Protection Minister Artsvik Minasyan, and a delegation from Iran’s power industry, participated and discussed issues like the third electricity transmission line between Iran and Armenia, participation of Iranian companies in power projects in Armenia, environmental issues affiliated with Aras river, as well as other commercial, transit, and customs cooperation between the two countries.

AEF Scholarship Interviews Inspire a First-Time Panelist

From l to r: Mimi Zarookian, Flora Wiegers, Seda Davidian, Sela Khachikyan, Armine Haroyan

Armenian Educational Foundation’s scholarship program started with 21 scholarships in 2007. This year, AEF has granted $320,000 in scholarships to 317 students in Armenia, Artsakh and Javakhk, including 124 new students. AEF’s Yerevan Office received 700 qualified scholarship applications and the Scholarship Committee has now completed its difficult task of screening, interviewing, and selecting the recipients. AEF encourages members and sponsors to participate in the interview process when in Armenia, to play a role in the decisions shaping its future.

Sela Khachikyan, a UCLA graduate and Birthright volunteer, continuing her studies in medicine at Pace University in New York this fall, was traveling throughout Armenia when she chose to take part in the interview process. She participated as a panelist, where she was able to directly witness the bright and vibrant future of Armenia.

BY SELA KHACHIKYAN

It was an absolute honor to be a part of the interview panel for the AEF scholarship interviews and an experience I’ll never forget. Each day, we would listen to a variety of university students share stories about themselves and their families. They would tell us where they saw themselves in the future and how they planned on contributing to the future of Armenia after graduating. I was honestly surprised and amazed at the wealth of talent, knowledge and resilience these students demonstrated throughout their interviews. The interviews were a definite confirmation that the future of Armenia looks bright. I understood that investing in their future is an integral part of securing a positive future for Armenia.

When we asked one medical student where she saw herself in five to ten years, she explained how she wanted to go back to her village to provide medical care there. She could have very easily said she wanted to leave the country, or work in Yerevan, where conditions and pay are much better. However, she pointed out the struggles and shortcomings that need to be fixed. She was a leader who was ready to work with others in order to improve healthcare in Armenia.

Sela Khachikyan (left) and Executive Director of AEF Armenia Armine Haroyan interview a student

A student from Javakhk told us about her poor living conditions, and how she did everything she could to get accepted to her school of choice without paying. She knew how difficult it would be for her family to come up with the money needed for her to attend a university, and it was inspiring to hear about how she achieved her goals. Her story demonstrated hard work, dedication, and resilience. Seeing these qualities in our youth was inspiring, because we know how difficult life is for some of them.

Another student that stood out to me was a young girl who taught herself Chinese, without taking any language classes. She spoke multiple languages and had recently started working with Chinese students online. It was amazing to see how the current youth is taking advantage of all the resources available to them.

Overall, the interviews were a confirmation that AEF is empowering a new generation of young leaders who will be shaping the future of Armenia. AEF is doing an honorable job, and I cannot wait to become a sponsor once I finish school myself.

Regional Challenges Discussed by Armenia’s Security Council

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan chairs a meeting of Armenia’s National Security Council on June 24

Mounting regional challenges were discussed on Monday by Armenia’s National Security Council, which convened a regular session with an agenda that reflected the current situation in the region.

In his remarks at the opening of the meeting, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan lamented at the complex challenges posed by security-related issues in the region and vowed to take appropriate action.
“Unfortunately the security situation around Armenia has deteriorated since our previous meeting. The recent developments in our region are prompting us to be more vigilant in the face of the emerging security challenges,” said Pashinyan adding that the security council must carefully debate the situation and “find the necessary tools to avoid additional risks for Armenia.”

The recent escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran and Monday’s announcement by President Trump of imposing tougher sanctions on Tehran, have placed Armenia in a tenuous situation.

Furthermore, renewed friction between Moscow and Tbilisi poses significant challenges to Yerevan. President Vladimir Putin of Russia signed a decree on Friday, imposing a temporary ban on passenger flights to Georgia beginning July 8, the Kremlin press office reported.

The ban comes after mass protests in Tbilisi, sparked by an uproar over a Russian State Duma delegation’s participation in the 26th session of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (IAO). On June 20, several thousand protesters converged on the parliament in downtown Tbilisi, demanding the resignation of the interior minister and the parliament’s speaker, and tried to storm the building. In response, police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. According to Georgian media, dozens were detained, 240 people suffered injuries.

On Thursday morning, IAO President Sergey Gavrilov, who is also a Russian parliament member, opened the session in the Georgian parliament. Opposition lawmakers were outraged by the fact that a Russian official addressed the event’s participants from the parliament speaker’s seat. In protest, they did not allow the IAO to continue.

The renewed tensions with Georgia and Iran, compounded by the ongoing realities of the Karabakh conflict pose a precarious challenge for Armenia’s National Security Council.

“Of course, ensuring enhanced security for the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh is the most serious priority for the government. And in this regard, we must discuss and address not only medium-term, but also strategic objectives,” said Pashinyan at the NSC meeting. He explained that these concerns were discussed within the cabinet and various political circles in Armenia.

The Federation of Mas-Wrestling of Armenia was founded in 2011, and over the years its participants showed high results and won prizes at international championships. The first experience of participation of Armenian athletes in the international championship took place in 2014, at the World Championship, where the Armenian team took the third place.

In 2015  Mas-Wrestling World Cup and the European Championship were held in Armenia, where  the Armenian national team took the second place in the team competition among 37 countries, leaving behind the national teams of the USA, Ukraine, Georgia, Poland and Germany. Karen Martirosyan won the championship in the weight category of up to 70kg, becoming the winner of the World Cup.

“The Armenian team formed by the result of the recent championship will take part in the next World Cup championship. About 80 athletes took part in this championship, and they all had passed a tough selection by category. In addition, for the first time we held a professional armfight among athletes with disabilities”,-said President of the Armenian Mas-Wrestling Federation Artavazd Nalbandyan.

“The promotion of sports events in Armenia has become a landmark for GeoProMining Company. We support the Mas-Wrestling Federation in Armenia and Russia and the high performance of Armenian athletes in the international tournaments is doubly enjoyable for us.

Mas-wrestling is a relatively new sport, which is gaining increasing popularity in the international arena from year to year. I am sure that the development of mas-wrestling in Armenia will not only contribute to a healthy lifestyle of the citizens, but also promote the image of the country among the international sports community, ” said the President of GeoProMining Roman Khudoliy.

Asbarez: Catholicos Aram I Meets with Syria’s Bashar-al-Assad

Catholicos Aram I meets with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at the Presidential Palace in Damascus on Tuesday and discussed issues of importance to the Syrian-Armenian community and to current situation in the country.

During the meeting, which lasted more than an hour, Aram I expressed gratitude for the state funds allocated by the President’s staff for the renovation of the Forty Martyrs Church in Aleppo and recalled the Syrian people’s generosity in taking in refugee survivors of the Armenian Genocide.

The Catholicos also highlighted the important role the Armenian community has played in the advancement of Syria’s political, cultural and societal life, saying that Syrian-Armenian community is important for both Syria and Armenia.

He also acknowledged the Syrian government’s continued support of the Armenian Cause.

Assad affirmed that Syria was and always will be the home of all its people, regardless of religion or ethnicity, lauding the “patriotic role of Armenian Syrians who embody the values and meanings of citizenship, belonging, and national unity in the face of adversity.”

The Syrian president called on all Syrian-Armenians who have left the country during the tensions there to return to Syria “and rebuild their homes and workplaces,” assuring that the Armenian community of Syria will continue to enjoy the government’s support.

The Catholicos was accompanied to the meeting by Aleppo Prelate Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian; Lebanon’s Tourism Minister Avedis Kitanian; the Armenian members of the Syrian Parliament Nora Arisian and Zhirayr Reyisian; member of Catholicosate Executive Council Hrach Hagopian; member of the Aleppo Prelacy’s Executive Council Garo Youzbashian and his staff bearer Abbot Hovakim Banjarjian.
