Armenian President, Ombudsman discuss return of POWs, situation in border villages

President Armen Sarkissian and Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan have discussed .

The Ombudsman briefed the President on the work done by the Human Rights Defender’s staff in recent months. In particular, he presented the problems registered during the regular visits of the Ombudsman’s staff to the border regions of the Republic, noting that the Azerbaijani authorities continuously and consistently carry out planned actions violating the internationally recognized rights of the residents of the border settlements of Armenia.

The Human Rights Defender also presented his observations on the process related to the state borders of the Republic of Armenia, stating that the Human Rights Defender has already applied to the relevant international instances regarding the process accompanied by gross human rights violations.

The President and the Human Rights Defender paid special attention to the work carried out for the return of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians held on the Azerbaijani side.

Arman Tatoyan provided the President with detailed information on the work done by the staff of the Human Rights Defender, noting that they cooperate with all the involved structures, as well as with international organizations.

It was agreed that the staffs of the President of the Republic and the Human Rights Defender will work together to return the captives as well as to raise the concerns and problems of the Armenian side in the international arena.

In this context, the President attached importance to the work carried out by the Human Rights Defender’s Office, professional observations and fact-finding activities.

Armenia appoints new Ambassador to Argentina

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 26, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian signed a decree on appointing Hovhannes Virabyan Ambassador of Armenia to Argentina (residence in Buenos Aires), the Presidential Office told Armenpress.

According to another presidential decree, Estera Mkrtumyan has been relieved from the position of Armenia’s Ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Paraguay.

The President signed the respective decrees based on the Prime Minister’s proposal.

‘’The National Assembly sitting had to take place at 18:00, but none of the MPs representing the ruling bloc arrived. This means that this government rules out any civilized option for stepping down’’, she said.

Armenian from Russia’s Voronezh ready to set up asphalt factory in Karabakh

During a conversation with Armenian News-NEWS.am, Vice-President of the Union of Armenians of Russia Herman Ananyants said there are Armenians from Voronezh who are ready to set up an asphalt factory to build roads in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and particularly referred to head of the regional chapter of the Union in Voronezh Kamo Chobanyan.

“Kamo Chobanyn is a citizen of Russia and has lived in Armenia for many years. Rosdorstroy will launch activities and is ready to move its factory directly to Artsakh,” Ananyants said, adding that many other Armenians have expressed willingness to support the restoration of Artsakh.

Sports: Armenian national team maintains its position in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World ranking

The Central Bank has set the following prices for precious metals.

Roughly 110,000 people have returned and currently live in Artsakh (Karabakh), Chief of Staff to the President Artak Beglaryan said on Monday, noting that another 40,000 remain in Armenia.

According to Beglaryan, majority of those in Armenia are refugees whose homes are now in Azerbaijani-occupied areas of Artsakh, including Hadrut and Shushi regions.

During the 44-days of the war, Azerbaijani missiles shelled almost all of the residential towns and villages in Karabakh, including churches and hospitals. Most of the roughly 150,000 residents of the region escaped to Armenia, leaving behind homes and everything they owned.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 9, ARMENPRESS. The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative continues to broaden its humanitarian program in Artsakh, the IDeA Foundation told Armenpress.

Aurora’s international standing and its vast network of engaged donors, experts, humanitarians and beneficiaries are being used to provide support to the people of Artsakh and ensure effective solutions on the ground. Taking into consideration the scale of Aurora’s relief program, a decision has been made to bring onboard a local expert with relevant background, and Narine Aghabalyan, former Minister of Education, Science and Sports of the Republic of Artsakh, has joined the Aurora team to lead the project. In the meantime, Aurora keeps accepting proposals from organizations in need of assistance on the ground – they are invited to submit their applications to [email protected].

“It is very important that Aurora is able to help people in need in different corners of the world, as well as to direct large-scale programs to Artsakh in 2020․ Aurora has already supported around 50 projects focused on immediate needs of locals, impacting thousands of Artsakh people. We are very glad to welcome Narine to the team and are certain that her expertise will allow the program to reach new heights,” said Arman Jilavian, Board Member of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative.

In the aftermath of the war, Aurora has been providing direct aid to the people of Artsakh on the basis of the #AraratChallenge crowdfunding initiative and has already allocated $473,000 to the program. Together with partner organizations, the #AraratChallenge helps 48 projects focused on providing essentials to displaced people and restoring civil infrastructure in Artsakh through financial support, as well as by connecting volunteers willing to donate their time and expertise with humanitarian organizations in need of assistance on the ground.

Over the years, the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative Co-Founders, Vartan Gregorian, Noubar Afeyan and Ruben Vardanyan and organizations founded by them have been involved in numerous programs in Artsakh. In addition, starting with Marguerite Barankitse, the recipient of the inaugural Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, the Aurora Prize Laureates have been visiting Artsakh annually, promoting its internationally.

“Overcoming the consequences of the autumn war of 2020 in Artsakh is a challenge for every Armenian.  Aurora can unite us all and help us meet it. United, we can do so much more than what we think we’re capable of,” said Narine Aghabalyan. An Artsakh native born in 1967 in Stepanakert, she held offices within the Government of the Republic of Artsakh in 2009–2020. For more than 8 years, Narine Aghabalyan had been the Minister of Culture and Youth Affairs, and later occupied the position of the Minister of Education, Science and Sports before joining the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative.

In her new position as Head of Artsakh program, Narine Aghabalyan will oversee the implementation of the projects in the region supported by Aurora, as well as the development of a humanitarian platform to connect all stakeholders under the auspices of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and enforce the centralized coordination of major Artsakh-related efforts and funding.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region Board of Directors, regional and national staff, as well as local ANCA chapter leaders held a productive meeting on Monday with Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA-30).

ANCA-WR representatives briefed Congressman Sherman on the latest developments in the region following the Turkish-Azerbaijani aggression and 44-day war waged against Artsakh and Armenia with the assistance of terrorist mercenaries from Syria. Chief among the topics discussed were the issues relating to the deployment of immediate U.S. humanitarian aid to Armenia and Artsakh, strict enforcement of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act as well as sanctions and other punitive measures against Turkish and Azerbaijani regimes, and the immediate return of Armenian POWs still in Azerbaijani captivity.

“Rep. STEPANAKERT, FEBRUARY 4, ARMENPRESS. President of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunyan received on February 3 the members of the Free Fatherland, the Justice and the Democracy parliamentary factions, the Presidential Office told Armenpress.

The situation in Artsakh caused by the recent war, the domestic and foreign policy issues were discussed during the meeting.

President Harutyunyan stated that at this period the unity of all political forces in the Republic and the demonstration of a political will aimed at the cooperation are highly important because ensuring the security of the people of Artsakh, solving the humanitarian crisis are the priorities of the domestic and foreign political agenda. He emphasized the need for joint efforts aimed at overcoming the challenges with the use of the potential of all.
