Deep regret for loss of lives, Ann Linde said

STOCKHOLM, November 17. /TASS/. Ann Linde, Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Swedish Foreign Minister, has welcomed a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan, mediated by Russia.

"[I] spoke to Armenian FM (Foreign Minister) Ararat Mirzoyan, welcome ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan after Russian mediation and called for de-escalation. Deep regret for loss of lives. Reiterated support for continued process through Minsk Group Co-Chairs and my Personal Representative," Linde wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, 2020, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. On November 9, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh starting from November 10.

Under the statement, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides maintained the positions that they had held, and the Armenian forces turned over control of certain districts to Azerbaijan. In addition, Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the contact line and to the Lachin corridor, which links Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.

On Tuesday, fierce fighting erupted between the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Armenian border region of Syunik. Yerevan said that Azerbaijani troops launched an offensive into Armenian territory. The highway that links Armenia’s capital with the southern regions and Iran was put in jeopardy. Baku put the blame on Yerevan, accusing the Armenian armed forces of provocation. Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said that Armenian troops attacked Azerbaijani military posts.

In the wake of those developments, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had phone calls with his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that after the telephone conversations, the Armenian and Azerbaijani defense ministers had taken measures to stabilize the situation on the border, which then went back to normal.

Naira, the mother of serviceman Abgar Nazaryan who fell in the third war in Nagorno-Karabakh, posted a comment on her Facebook page. The comment reads as follows:

“Join us. Don’t keep silent. We are to blame for being indifferent and conforming.

I, Naira Nazaryan, other of eternal hero of the 44-day war in Artsakh Abgar Nazaryan, demand the resignation of scapegrace Nikol Pashinyan, who has seized power in the Republic of Armenia. Under his administration, Armenia has only been defeated, has been humiliated and has sacrificed its young generation. He says he is ready to be executed, if the people decides to execute him.

Let us ‘execute’ the scum inside the country so that he does not transfer Yerablur Military Pantheon and the other pantheons of Armenia to the Turks in the future.”

The parents of eternal heroes of the 44-day war have joined and continue to join this call, and among them is Melanya Aroyan (mother of Aziz Aghajanyan) and Elizaveta Budaghyan (mother of Arman Ohanjanyan).

NEWS.am’s special report: Drive from Kapan to Tchakatashen is 150 km instead of previous 8 km

News.am, Armenia
Nov 19 2021

Citizens of Armenia need to travel 150 km instead of the previous 8 km to travel from Kapan to Tchakaten, meaning they need to travel from Kapan to Meghri and then to Tchakaten. After the Azerbaijanis set up a customs point on the Kapan-Tchakaten road, six villages are no longer directly connected to Kapan.

The alternative road, which is talked about, is impassable, and no driver takes that road. Armenian News-NEWS.am’s correspondent tried to find a driver who would go to Tchakaten via that road, but in vain.

Armenian News-NEWS.am’s crew took the trip from Kapan to Meghri, but there was no transport from Meghri to Tchakaten, and the minimum price for a taxi is AMD 20,000.

The first village on the road from Meghri to Tchakaten is Tsav, which is also no longer directly linked to Kapan. “We’re waiting for the road to open soon, and we’re not panicking since panic will make us want to be evacuated. We’re psychologically and physically ready for this,” a resident of Tsav said. Another resident noted that if they [the authorities] knew that this road was going to be shut down, they should have launched construction of the alternative road earlier.

According to the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, the attacks were suppressed by return fire.

Intense fighting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani armed forces broke out in the border areas of Armenia's Syunik region on Tuesday. Armenian top diplomat says situation in region is unstable due to Azerbaijan’s actions

TASS, Russia

YEREVAN, November 3. /TASS/. The situation in the South Caucasus is still fragile due to the Azerbaijani authorities’ non-constructive actions, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said in an interview with France’s Nouvelles d'Armenie.

"Despite the cessation of hostilities in line with the trilateral Armenian, Russian, and Azerbaijani statement of November 9, 2020, the situation is still unstable because Azerbaijan is not fulfilling certain obligations under the above-mentioned statement. In particular, it misinterprets certain provisions, refuses to release military and civilian detainees, and indulges in bellicose and expansionist rhetoric," the Armenian foreign ministry quoted him as saying.

"Armenia continues its efforts to reach stability in the region," he said. "The program of our government clearly states our readiness to contribute to the establishment of an era of peaceful development in the region. I am sure that if other countries demonstrate a corresponding political will and make constructive steps, all necessary conditions will be created for the beginning of active discussions on the above-mentioned agenda."

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the highland region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory that had been part of Azerbaijan before the Soviet Union break-up, but primarily populated by ethnic Armenians, broke out in February 1988 after the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992-1994, tensions boiled over and exploded into large-scale military action for control over the enclave and seven adjacent territories after Azerbaijan lost control of them. Talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement have been ongoing since 1992 under the OSCE Minsk Group, led by its three co-chairs – Russia, France and the United States.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, 2020, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. On November 9, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh. Under the document, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides stopped at the positions that they had held and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the engagement line in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor that connects Armenia with the enclave to exercise control of the ceasefire observance. Apart from that, a number of districts came over to Baku’s control.
