PanARMENIAN.Net – Visits to Georgia by foreign citizens in the first
quarter of 2012 increased by 39.4% year-to-year, reaching 677,278,
according to official figures released on April 2 by Georgian Interior
Ministry, which is in charge of border management.

Number of visits by foreign citizens to Georgia stood at 2.8 million
in 2011 up by 39% over the previous year, according to these figures.

According to geotimes.ge, Turkish citizens made up the largest share
in total visits (14.7%) to Georgia in January-March 2012, followed
by Azerbaijani (10.7%), Armenian (6.8%) and Russian (2.6%) citizens.

In late February Georgia unilaterally lifted visa rules for the
Russian citizens. According to Georgian Interior Ministry, the move
was reflected in increase of number of visits made by the Russian
citizens to Georgia in March.

According to these figures 6,192 visits were made by the Russian
citizens to Georgia in March 2012 against only 2,163 in March 2011.

Visits from Iran, whose citizens do not require Georgian visa since
last January either, almost doubled in the first quarter of 2012 to
over 9,000.

There was a 15.1% y/y increase in number of visits made to Georgia by
citizens from EU-member states in January-March 2012 reaching 8,343,
followed by Ukrainian citizens with 4,358, a 11.7% y/y increase.

Israel Forecasts "Fewer Than 300" Causalities In War With Iran

ISRAEL FORECASTS “FEWER THAN 300” CAUSALITIES IN WAR WITH IRAN

PanARMENIAN.Net – Israeli security officials have estimated the number
of casualties in Israel as a result of a military conflict with Iran
would be fewer than 300, The Guardian reported.

An assessment presented to the security cabinet last weekend
anticipates three weeks of rocket and missile attacks from Lebanon
and Syria, as well as probably Iran and – to a limited extent – Gaza,
according to reports in the Israeli media.

The projected death toll, although significant in a country with a
population of 7.8m, is lower than earlier estimates.

The Israeli defence minister, Ehud Barak, last November sought to allay
fears of a high number of civilian casualties in a conflict resulting
from an attack on Iran. “There’s no chance in such a situation for
500,000 killed, not 5,000 or even 500 killed,” he told Israel Radio.

According to the recent security assessment, Iran’s conventional
missile capabilities are limited.

On other fronts, Hamas has said it will not be drawn into a conflict
between Israel and Iran, and Syria’s internal turmoil may hamper
its ability to engage in an external conflict. However, Hezbollah in
Lebanon would be expected to target missiles from its large arsenal
towards Israel, which would in turn deploy its Iron Dome anti-missile
defence system.

Some Israeli politicians have raised concerns about domestic
preparations for a conflict, pointing to a shortage of gas masks and
bomb shelters.

Is Russia For Return Of Territories?

IS RUSSIA FOR RETURN OF TERRITORIES?
Naira Hayrumyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 14:35:10 – 03/04/2012

Russia insists on following the principles of Madrid. In fact,
the Russian minister of foreign affairs Sergey Lavrov thinks that
Armenia must return the territories and afterwards consider the status
of Karabakh.

Lavrov stated in Yerevan that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, at
the level of the presidents of Russia, the United States and France,
adopted at least three documents in the past three years which urged
to settle the Karabakh issue on the basis of the principles of the
U.N. Charter, the OSCE, by way of negotiations in the result of which
in the final destination of the settlement, after having reached
agreements on liberating certain territories, ensuring a corridor,
the people of Karabakh will decide their destiny.

In fact, he admitted that the sides cannot agree on this issue
without specifying who is against. It is hardly Azerbaijan because the
return of territories is what Baku needs, while Baku only appoints
an uncertain referendum of independence when half of Karabakh will
already be under its control.

But does Armenia agree? Azerbaijan has recently rejected agreements
at least four times, the Armenian foreign minister Eduard Nalbandyan
announced.

He said the Azerbaijanis interpret the change of the status quo
only as return of territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. In this
connection the co-chairs stated through their foreign ministers that
all the principles and issues to form a framework for the settlement
have been worked out as whole and none of them can be separated,
Eduard Nalbandyan said.

Interestingly, on the same day the U.S. Ambassador John Heffern made
a statement without uttering a word on the principles of settlement,
territories or status. Heffern spoke about peace, that is preservation
of the status quo.

We will continue to seek for the right formula, work on the mechanisms
for the prevention of violations of the ceasefire, keep the sides at
the table of negotiations, ensure lasting peace, he said.

He noted that the presidents of the co-chair states of the Minsk Group
have published the idea of balancing military expenditure, moderating
the race of armament, prepare the peoples for a realistic settlement.

The U.S. ambassador said they do everything they can to enable the
sides to reach a settlement, adding that they are now working together
with the sides on the so-called main principles. It seemed that we
are close but we haven’t reached the goal, he said.

The Azerbaijani foreign minister Elmar Mammedyarov said the status quo
is dangerous for Azerbaijan. He noted that the upcoming elections
in Armenia and co-chair countries will protract the process of
settlement. However, it does not mean that the process has come to
a halt, he said.

Apparently, the European Union does not make sufficient efforts
to boost its role in the settlement of the Karabakh issue. It may
be related to the elections but most probably the EU considers
preservation of peace a priority to the settlement itself.

frappe contre l’Iran, Teheran ayant qualifie d’ennemi l’Etat hebreu
