RAILROAD SERVICES THROUGH ABKHAZIA EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR ARMENIA – PRESIDENT

Interfax, Russia
June 19 2014

The resumption of railroad services through Abkhazia would be extremely
important for Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, the Armenian president currently
visiting Georgia, told journalists on Thursday.

“The opening of this railroad is extremely important to us, and we
are working toward this, but this decision doesn’t depend on Armenia
or a Georgian-Armenian agreement. There are other parties with which
it’s necessary to work,” Sargsyan said.

Georgian First Deputy Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said the
matter was not discussed during Sargsyan’s visit to Tbilisi.

“This is a most complicated issue, both from the political and
technical points of view. We didn’t discuss this matter today,”
Kvirikashvili said.

Georgian Ambassador to Armenia Tengiz Sharmanashvili said the problem
of the resumption of railroad services through Abkhazia would be
resolved “exclusively proceeding from Georgia’s interests.”

IF THE NEW GOVERNMENT STARTS ITS ACTIVITY IN THIS WAY IT WILL HAVE THE FATE OF THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT – ARMEN RUSTAMYAN

The discussions over the bill on making changes in the Pension Fund
system continue in the NA.

Speaking at the NA head of the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation-Dashnaktustyun (ARF-D) Armen Rustamyan said, “And we thought
they are going to withdraw the funds, wanted to hail it. The government
of Tigran Sargsyan changed after well-known events one of which was the
pension system, but it seems there is no much difference between the
previous and incumbent governments. The hopes are gradually fading
away and will completely vanish in a while,” he said, adding that
people are calculating their incomes which are gradually reducing.

“The authorities think that by raising salary they solve the issue
as the salaries of the employees of state sector are not enough
for living. People do not trust the authorities and the opposition
were trying to bring back this trust as we all are on the edge of
collapse,” he said, asking why the government changed if they are
continuing the same policy.

“If the new government starts its activity in this way it will have
the fate of the previous government,” he concluded.

MP COMPARED ENTHUSIASM OF COURT’S RULING ON PENSION SYSTEM WITH ARMENIA-TURKEY MATCH

06.20.2014 17:14 epress.am

With its new draft law on the funded pension system, the Armenian
government is bursting the enthusiasm society had after the
Constitutional Court’s ruling, Armenian Revolutionary Federation MP
Artsvik Minasyan said in parliament today.

Under the new law, civil servants will be required to make
contributions to the funded pension system. The government believes
this will not be a heavy burden since civil servants’ salaries will
be increased after July 1.

According to Minasyan, the rights of the two pension fund managers
were placed above the rights of citizens of Armenia.

“If you were present at the meetings of the Constitutional Court
and saw the enthusiasm that the Armenian society experienced,
that enthusiasm recalled the enthusiasm of the Armenian national
team’s victory in the Armenia-Turkey football match,” said Minasyan,
probably referring to the match between the national youth teams in
2007 in Yerevan, in which the Armenian team won 2-1.

The MP stressed the importance of the fact that the government
submitted to the National Assembly a bill with such serious resonance
without first putting it for discussion in parliamentary committees,
which is a violation of the law.

“You think [since] you’re the [parliamentary] majority, you can pass
any bill, so do it. In the end, you’ll have an empty Armenia,” he said.

syrienne.

ARMENIA’S RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE IS ABSOLUTELY READY TO OPENING OF TRAFFIC TOWARDS TURKEY

by Arthur Yernjakyan

ARMINFO
Friday, June 20, 10:54

Armenia’s railway infrastructure is absolutely ready to opening of
traffic towards Turkey, president of the “Russian railways” OJSC,
Vladimir Yakunin, said when replying to Arminfo correspondent’s
question.

He said that Armenian railwaymen are technically ready to opening
of traffic via the Gyumri-Kars border point, but the traffic may be
opened only in case of availability of the political solution about
opening of the border between the two states. (Turkey shut down the
Armenian-Turkish border in 1993 because of the political reasons).

He also added that Turkish businessmen which arrived to Armenia
on invitation of Armenian Union of Industrialists and Businessmen,
assured themselves of readiness of the railway.

He said that the rail gage of Armenia is wider than the Turkish one,
but this is a technical problem that can be quickly resolved.

He also added that they have been working for construction of
Iran-Armenia railway project.

BUSINESSMAN ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN ‘OFFSHORE SCANDAL’ EXTRADITED TO ARMENIA

NEWS | 20.06.14 | 11:43

Businessman Ashot Sukiasyan, who is allegedly involved in the so-called
‘offshore scandal’ in which Armenia’s former prime minister Tigran
Sargsyan and a high-ranking church official also figured according
to revelations in media, was extradited to Armenia on Thursday.

Sukiasyan is now at the Yerevan-Kentron penitentiary, according to
local media reports.

Armenian authorities requested the extradition of Sukiasyan soon after
the businessman was arrested in Tbilisi in early February. The man was
on the Interpol list after another businessman, Paylak Hayrapetyan,
made a claim against him and a court in Armenia issued an arrest
warrant.

After an investigation Sukiasyan was charged with large-scale fraud,
large-scale property damage and money laundry. In particular, he is
accused of deceiving Hayrapetyan by talking him into borrowing money
from a local bank, then took the money for allegedly importing rough
diamonds from Sierra Leone, but escaped with it.

Last year Hetq.am, an Armenian online magazine, published a story
according to which together with Sukiasyan, Armenia’s former Prime
Minister Tigran Sargsyan and head of the Ararat Diocese, Archbishop
Navasard Kchoyan are co-owners of a Cyprus-registered offshore company
that allegedly had a direct connection with businessman Hayrapetyan’s
bankruptcy. Both Sargsyan and Kchoyan have repeatedly denied having
anything to do with the offshore company in question.
