Plans to assassinate Armenian Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan, Fener Greek
Patriarch Bartholomew and Turkish Jewish businessman İshak Alaton
were found on a computer belonging to Bekir Ozturk, head of the
National Forces Association (Kuvva-i Milliye).

Today’s Zaman informs referring to the Gazeteport Internet news portal
that the ultra-nationalist organization could have carried out these
plans during the presidential election if either Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan or another Justice and Development Party (AK Party)
member were to have been elected president.

The report said the assassination plans found on Ozturk’s computer
were part of the ongoing Umraniye investigation. It was noted that
the public prosecutor’s office has demanded an increase in security
measures from the Security General Directorate to protect Mutafyan,
Bartholomew and Alaton.

After finding 27 hand grenades and other explosives in a slum house
in the Umraniye district of İstanbul, the security forces went on to
raid Kuvva-i Milliye offices in Ankara, Konya, Bursa and Balıkesir
over the past week. A total of five people, including Ozturk, have
now been arrested in connection with the investigation.

BENELUX AZERBAIJANI CONGRESS CONDEMNS "PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS" IN NAGORNO KARABAKH

Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
July 19 2007

Congress of Benelux Azerbaijanis made a statement on "presidential
elections" conducted in so-called Nagorno Karabakh Republic, the
congress told APA. The statement condemns the "presidential elections"
conducted by the separatist regime and denounces the biased position
of the supporters of so-called regime.

"No force can separate Karabakh from Azerbaijan. All election shows
of Armenians aim at drawing attention of the international community
and proves that it is impossible to hold peaceful negotiations with
a community committed bloodshed in the Caucasus," the statement
underlines.

BAKU: Turkey Makes Statement On "Presidential Elections" In Nagorno

TURKEY MAKES STATEMENT ON "PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS" IN NAGORNO KARABAKH

Azeri Press Agency
July 17 2007

Turkey will not recognize the so-called presidential elections to
be held by Armenia in the occupied Azerbaijani territories – Nagorno
Karabakh, Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the
"presidential elections" in Nagorno Karabakh scheduled for July 19,
APA’s Turkey bureau reports.

The statement says that these "elections" violates international
law norms, and the invaders try to tense the situation by taking
these steps.

"The elections in the occupied Nagorno Karabakh aim at legalizing
the occupation and contradict the UN Security Council’s resolutions
and OSCE decisions. The Nagorno Karabakh conflict impedes peace,
stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus. Conducting
"presidential elections" in Nagorno Karabakh while the conflicting
parties Azerbaijan and Armenia continue negotiations by OSCE Minsk
Group’s mediation should be regarded as ignoring these talks. Turkey
regards these elections as a fact of violation of Azerbaijan’s
sovereignty and territorial integrity, states that these elections
will be considered as null and void and will not recognize the results
of these ‘elections’," the statement concludes.

RA PROSECUTOR-GENERAL’S OFFICE CONFIRMS THE VISIT OF THE TWO INVESTIGATION GROUP REPRESENTATIVES TO MOSCOW ON ALEXANDER ARZUMANYAN’S CASE.

In RA Prosecutor-General’s Office they confirmed the visit of the
two investigation group representatives to Moscow on the case of
ex-Foreign Minister of Armenia Alexander Arzumanyan.

To recall, according to the investigation data, in April 2007
ex-Foreign Minister of Armenia and ex-Deputy Minister of Defense Vahan
Shirkhanyan in the name of 9 different people received $178 200 by
preliminary agreement with businessman Levon Markos, who was on the
wanted list. The money was transferred through "Converse-Bank" and
the Russian Bank of commercial funding. Moreover, the money transfer
was accompanied with serious violations.

A. Arzumanyan is accused of money laundering.

As RA Prosecutor General’s press-secretary Sona Truzyan informed
ArmInfo correspondent, RA Prosecutor General’s Office addressed RF
Prosecutor General’s Office on 24 May, 2007 with a petition to take
investigation actions. The petition was satisfied and two investigation
group representatives were delegated to Moscow in order to take part in
those actions. "Taking into consideration public interest towards this
case and their right to receive accurate and truthful information, as
well as in view of the fact that recently much untruthful information
appeared in press, I inform that as a result of investigation actions
taken jointly with the Russian colleagues 8 citizens out of 9, in
the name of whom the amount of $178 200 was transferred, were found
and questioned",-S. Truzyan noted.

According to her, these people testified that they have no relation
to the mentioned money transfers, they didn’t send money to Yerevan
and are not acquainted with the recipients. Alexander Agazaryan
(Alexander Arzumanyan’s friend) was also questioned in Moscow. Notably,
A. Arzumanyan’s attorney also applied for questioning him. During
the questioning A. Agazarian claimed that he had transferred the
money and had done it on A. Arzumanyan’s request in the name of 9
different people, the list of which A. Arzumanyan had given him. At
the same time, Agazarian refuted Vahan Shirkhanyan’s testimony that
the money was meant for organizing his daughter’s wedding.

According to A. Agazaryan, he is not acquainted with V. Shirkhanyan
and didn’t transfer any money to him. Levon Ordyan, a relative of V.

Shirkhanyan’s son -in- law-Artak Chobanyan also reputed
V. Shirkhanyan’s version. L. Ordyan claimed that A. Chobanyan didn’t
request him to send money. At the same time, S. Truzyan noted that the
investigation has no written proofs on A. Agazaryan’s words, that the
money was transferred by him. There is only A. Agazarian’s statement.

Police nab hit-and-run suspect
Authorities say man arrested in Mexico City was apparently heading for his
native Armenia.
By Jason Wells

CENTRAL GLENDALE – The man suspected of driving the car that struck and
killed a 24-year-old Glendale woman last week was in police custody
Wednesday after he was caught in Mexico City apparently trying to fly to
Spain, authorities said.

Ara Grigoryan, 20, had eluded detectives for nearly a week after he
allegedly struck Elizabeth Sandoval with a Mercedes-Benz sedan on July 10 as
she jaywalked across South Glendale Avenue just south of East Windsor Road.
Sandoval died at the scene after being flung more than 75 feet, police said.

At a press conference Wednesday inside the Glendale Police Station,
Elizabeth Sandoval’s sister, Jackie, held back tears as she thanked the
public for helping authorities catch Grigoryan.

`It’s a bittersweet day for my family,’ she said. `Not many things have made
me laugh or smile, but getting this guy has been the best news I’ve heard
since last Tuesday.’

Grigoryan had apparently flown to Mexico City from Tijuana, possibly on
Friday, where immigration authorities there detained him because of problems
with his travel documents, Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams said.

Through U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland
Security, Mexican authorities discovered Grigoryan’s outstanding warrant and
detained him for deportation, Adams said.

Authorities believe Grigoryan had planned to return to his native Armenia,
Adams said.

Police said they weren’t sure when Grigoryan had immigrated to the United
States, or whether he was a legal resident, but said they had given him
about a dozen traffic citations over the years – one for reportedly failing
to yield to a pedestrian.

He will likely face felony hit-and-run charges and may also be charged with
vehicular homicide, depending on how the Los Angeles County District
Attorney’s Office decides to proceed, Adams said.

Grigoryan’s arrest caps a weeklong manhunt that developed quickly after
Glendale Police solicited help from the public concerning his and the
Mercedes’ whereabouts.

The black sedan was found abandoned Saturday in Van Nuys after Mercedes-Benz
of North America authorized the activation of its GPS device.

But that development didn’t come until after detectives publicly chided the
car company for ignoring two court orders demanding that the device be
activated.

The Glendale City Council and the county Board of Supervisors approved a
combined $20,000 reward Tuesday night for information leading to the arrest
and conviction of a suspect.

Investigators are still examining the car, which had some body work done on
its front end to repair damage allegedly sustained in the accident, Adams
said.

Police are also trying to determine whether Grigoryan received any help in
fleeing the country. Anyone who helped him – either financially or by
withholding information – would be charged as an accessory, Adams said.

Jackie Sandoval asked the public to come forward with information that might
shed light on any support network.

`If they were helping him out in any way, they helped him kill my sister,’
she said.

Authorities and city officials hailed public participation as a crucial
complement to the around-the-clock detective work that helped track
Grigoryan.

`The community involvement really helped this case along, and we’re hoping
that continues,’ Mayor Ara Najarian said before the announcement.

Elizabeth Sandoval’s father, Guadalupe, spoke through a translator as he
thanked the public for their support and the authorities for their
diligence.

`If my daughter, if she could see it, she wouldn’t believe how much
everybody has come out to help,’ he said.

Grigoryan could be arraigned as early as Friday, Glendale Police Officer
John Balian said.

Containers Are No Longer Dangerous

CONTAINERS ARE NO LONGER DANGEROUS

A1+
[05:58 pm] 16 July, 2007

Davtashen Community doesn’t have a trash dump, therefore people have
turned the area between the first and second districts into a rubbish
heap for building refuse.

Besides rubble, one can come across old refrigerators, gas ovens, etc.

A few days ago the residents were caught unawares by a sudden
explosion. Foam containers dumped in the area began to explode one
after another.

"We were sitting at home when all of a sudden there was a loud
explosion. Coming up to the window we saw a smoke," resident Hasmik
told A1+.

Some residents state the fire was caused by children others – by the
sun. Fortunately none of the passers-by was hurt.

The note on containers warns against burning them after the
usage. Containers must be kept away from direct sunlight as the smoke
is toxic and dangerous for health.

Hrant Badalyan, a chief specialist of Davtashen Community, informed
A1+ that containers aren’t dangerous.

Four specialists attended the sight with A1+’s correspondent to study
the containers.

It is noteworthy that the area will soon be planted with trees and
turned into a garden.

"Banishment" By Andrey Zvyagintsev Closes Forth Golden Apricot

"BANISHMENT" BY ANDREY ZVYAGINTSEV CLOSES FORTH GOLDEN APRICOT
By Rouzan Poghosian

AZG Armenian Daily
18/07/2007

"Banishment" by Andrey Zvyagintsev, which took awards at the Cannes
Film festival, closed the Forth Golden Apricot in Yerevan. The
film stands for marvelous performance of the actors, profound
philosophical appeal and very expressive shots. Everything is very
natural and vivid. The film is staged based on "Something Funny" novel
by William Saroyan. The film director managed not only to preserve the
spirit of Saroyan’s novel, its philosophy, but he also reveals and
developed the characters and the plot. Zvyagintsev managed to open
the human characters, moods, giving his unique explanation of the
human relations. The imaginary thinking of the film director gained
a humanistic value making the film acceptable and understandable
for everyone.

Zvyagintsev proves that the life is based on love, which leads to
eternal existence, while the habit of living together kills a person,
its individuality and even beloved children can’t help survive. "We
do not belong to our parents, just like our children do not belong to
us, either," says Vera, the mother of a young family in the film. "I
am pregnant, but my child is not yours," says Vera to her husband and
unfolds the dramatic and tragic developments in the film. The husband,
being misled by this statement, demands to make an abortion and get
rid of the child. Right after the abortion, the mother commits suicide
by taking big amount of soporific medicine. The husband understands
the meaning of her words only in the end, when he visits his friend
whom he suspects in an affair with his wife. The friend explains
everything to him, and the film ends in a scene, when the husband
holds the pregnancy test of his wife, which proves that child was
his and there is a revolver on the table.

The spectators were applauding for a long time, taking the pain and
the torture of the characters, as well as the beauty and the wisdom
of the film with them.
