Confronting memories of genocide

For Hrant Alianak, role of Armenian who doesn’t want to remember is
personal

Feb 19, 2008 04:30 AM
Richard Ouzounian
theatre critic

"Genocide is genocide," says Hrant Alianak.

"It doesn’t matter whether it happens in Armenia or Germany or
Rwanda. It’s something we can never forget."

The veteran of Toronto’s alternative theatre scene has been forced to
confront memories of his own family’s past as he works on the world
premiere of Richard Kalinoski’s A Crooked Man, opening Friday at the
Theatre Centre.

The play deals with an 88-year-old Armenian named Hagop, who faces
the horrible effects the massacres he witnessed as a young man have
had on his life when his journalist grandson sets out to interview
him for a seemingly benign magazine article.

It’s not necessity that has driven Alianak to play the lead himself,
as well as direct the play, even though it marks his first appearance
on a Toronto stage in 15 years.

It’s also the first professional production in Canadian theatre
history with an all-Armenian cast. Alianak’s fellow actors are Araxi
Arslanian, Garen Boyajian, Carlo Essagian and Michael Kazarian.

"There’s a number of aspects of the character and many people from my
past that I’ve been forced to remember and confront working on this
project," Alianak says quietly. "It hasn’t been easy."

He was one of the sparkplugs of the Toronto theatre scene throughout
the 1970s and ’80s, and no one who saw his spaghetti western version
of Titus Andronicus at Theatre Passe Muraille in 1975 will ever
forget it.

He spent most of the 1990s as a lucratively employed villain on TV
series like Robocop and Psi Factor, but when he returned to the
theatre to direct Kalinoski’s Beast of the Moon in 1997, he truly
began to reinvestigate his Armenian heritage for the first time. A
Crooked Man has brought him even deeper into the past.

"I was born in the Sudan in 1950." he begins.

"My father had fled there from Turkey when he was only 3 years old.
There was an Armenian club in Sudan with about 1,000 members and I
grew up hearing all their stories.

"Everyone had lost someone back then," he says, referring to the dark
days from 1915 and 1918 when between a million and 1.5 million
Armenians were killed by the Turks. Turkey still denies the genocide
happened.

"I had a great uncle who was 7 when it happened," recalls Alianak.
"He was out in the barn looking at a donkey having her baby. When he
came back, his family was gone and he wandered around the countryside
for two years, searching for them."

There’s a pause before he can continue. "Everybody tells you a little
bit of their story, but they stick to the surface facts, because it
is too painful to dig all the way inside."

But that is exactly what happens to Hagop in this play. "A man who
was esteemed in his time is now forgotten, then suddenly forced to
open the doors to his past. When all that he has hidden for so many
years comes out, it overwhelms him."

Even though Alianak insists that "the message of the play is beyond
the Armenian issue, it’s a human drama," he is also proud of his
Armenian cast. "The play can best be told," he concludes, "with the
passion an Armenian can bring to it."

A Crooked Man begins previews Wednesday night, opens Friday and plays
until March 2 at the Theatre Centre, 1087 Queen St. W. For tickets

Yerevan-Minsk flight plane underwent an accident at 4:19 local
time. The airplane belonged to Belavia.

While leaving airport Zvartnots, the crew informed the flight conductor
that the airplane is leaning towards left. Rising up by 4 to 5 meters,
the airplane turned to the left side. It kept on going along the
whole flight line. This information was released by Civil Aviation
General Department (CAGD) Head Artiom Movsisyan.

In his words, two of the passengers helped the crew to open the
door. Fire started after the plane turned to the left. Fifty seconds
after the accident, fire brigade arrived.

"Our losses are the minimum," Movsisyan mentioned also saying "there
was no explosion but some have heard noise." Airplane fuel poured on
the ground.

The fire service has been under the subordination of the airport
for one year and the company has made an investment totaling $3,500
million for the establishment of the service.

In Movsisyan’s words, the weather was dry. There are no problems
connected with the Armenian party. The airplane passed technical
observation in February. The plane is of 1999 production with a
capacity to carry 48 passengers. The pilots have worked with the
plan for one year. The Byelorussian pilots have passed medical check
ups before the flight and no irregularities were reported. The
transcription of the black boxes has started. However, it is not
clear how much information has been preserved.

The Armenian Aviation authorities plan to invite the International
Aviation Committee for investigation.

Movsisyan said the Armenian party is not well acquainted with that
type of airplanes.

According to CAGD information, Byelorussian, Ukrainian and Russian
citizens each, 5 Georgia and 10 Armenian passengers were on board. The
embassies of the countries were notified. Zvartnots started its normal
work at 11 o’clock.

Turkish PM: Events In Karabakh Testified To Real Committers Of Genoc

TURKISH PM: EVENTS IN KARABAKH TESTIFIED TO REAL COMMITTERS OF GENOCIDE
By Hakob Chaqrian

AZG Armenian Daily
14/02/2008

Armenia-Turkey

On February 11, the leading Turkish newspapers, as well as the Turkish
version of "Euronews" thoroughly represented and commented on the
speech of the Turkish PM Recep Taipp Erdogan at the 44th Munich
Security Conference on Saturday and Sunday February 9 and 10.

Particularly, Erdogan conditioned the trans-border military actions by
the necessity to fight PKK. He also strictly criticized the European
countries for their passiveness in the anti-terrorist struggle,
as well as for the "disgraceful" status of "privileged partner"
suggested to Turkey within the framework of the European Union.

He also expressed readiness to reconsider the article #301 in the
Turkish Criminal Code, as well as condemned the UN Security Council
for delaying the discussion of the Cyprus issue for four years. As
for the nuclear program of Iran, Erdogan said that that is meant to
produce electricity. He added that Turkey also is soon to carry out
nuclear programs, and may get the label of producers of nuclear weapon.

In response to a question by RA Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian,
Erdogan said that becoming Turkish PM he allowed the air transportation
between Armenia and Turkey. He also reminded of the recent restoration
of the Armenian church on Aghtamar island in the Lake of Van,
emphasizing that it’s open for visiting for all tourists, including
the Armenians. He also pointed out the fact that there are 40 000
Armenians currently living in Turkey. He conditioned this fact by
Turkey’s being a country of peace. Erdogan stated that he has no
problems with his citizens of Armenian nationality.

As for the Nagorno Karabakh issue, Turkish PM said that the world
considers Armenia "an occupant" and added that we should leave the
territory to Azeris, as they are their brothers. Then he called
for the Armenians to give up the international recognition of the
Armenian Genocide and added that this may help restore peace in our
relations. He added that "the events in Karabakh testified to who are
the real committers of the genocide." In the end, Erdogan emphasized
the importance of accepting one’s own history.

The speech of the Turkish PM is obviously inspired by the hopeless
situation turkey appeared in after the suggestion of the French
President to make this country a "privileged partner" for the EU and by
the evitable international recognition of the Armenian Genocide. This
very situation leads Erdogan to despair and makes him urge Armenians
leave Nagorno Karabakh.

This means that Erdogan’s problems begin when the issue of Nagorno
Karabakh is linked to that of the Armenian Genocide. Otherwise, he
wouldn’t forget about the OSCE Minsk group when urging Armenian to
leave NKR.
