Living by the guarantee of right, law and dignity in Armenia should not be a dream, but a reality, President Armen Sarkissian said during an event at the Constitutional Court dedicated to the Constitution Day and the day of State Symbols, reports Armenpress. He stated that living by law is not just a necessity and duty, but the advantage of free people who know the value of their rights and that of others.

“The state symbols are unique values, and the proper understanding and appreciation of their significance are important for the country’s today and tomorrow. The Constitution is considered as the country’s legality symbol. But the best symbol of each state is its law-abiding citizen, who at the same time is protected by the law”.

Armen Sarkissian said on this day of the Constitution we can proudly record not only the indisputable existence of sovereign, developing Republic of Armenia that chose the path to democracy, but also the existence of its growing reputation in the international arena. “The increase of this reputation is the right and duty of all of us. The Constitutional values can become a reality in case when each of us is the bearer of these values”, the President said, adding that the Constitution is the legal boundary of right and duty. It, in fact, divides the permissible from the impermissible, outlines the legal field our moral laws are subject to.

“We should think and act in the interests of the country, use the opportunities provided by the Constitution and protect it. And by then the country will become better, the citizen of the country – more confident, the leadership of the country – more responsible and more reliable. Together we must continue building politically and economically harmonious Armenia developing based on the mutual respect of the citizen and the leadership”, President Sarkissian said.

United States ready to assist new Armenian government to find new investments

YEREVAN, JUNE 30, ARMENPRESS. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington D.C..

U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills told Voice of America that during the meeting the officials discussed increasing the trade and investments with the U.S., as well as the Smithsonian festival. He said the Armenian President shared his vision on Armenia’s new era with the Secretary of State.

Asked why the top U.S. official holds his first meeting with President Sarkissian after the “velvet revolution”, in case when Yerevan’s foreign policy, according to the Constitution, is being carried out by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government, the U.S. Ambassador said: “I think it’s right for the leader of the country to have an opportunity to meet with the Secretary of State. I know that the Secretary of State wished to hear what had happened in Armenia and to talk about how the United States can assist Armenia. In particular, I think the talk was about the trade and investments, which, as I understand, the president was asked to deal with in his constitutional role, that is to find foreign investments and work with the Diaspora”.

Ambassador Richard Mills said the United States is ready to assist the new Armenian government to find new investments. According to him, the government already conducts the main work in this field, by fighting corruption in the country and creating fair field for all businessmen.

“Over the past three years I have repeatedly heard from the U.S. and also from Armenian businessmen that the main obstacle for entrepreneurship development in the country is the absence of fair rules of the game in Armenia, and that the system was providing privileges to some persons”.

According to the Ambassador, the new Armenian government’s tough fight against corruption gives strong and positive signal to businessmen, but lasting changes require ensuring the power of the laws and the structures maintaining them. In this regard Ambassador Mills attached importance to holding free and transparent parliamentary elections in Armenia.

Commenting on the “velvet revolution” that took place in Armenia in spring 2018, the Ambassador said the most important was that it was the independent decision of the Armenian people.

“It was Armenians who came out to the street demanding more transparent and fair society. That peaceful demand was very impressive. I want to state that this was completely the step of the Armenian people. I think it became possible also because the voices, that supported transparency and accountability, have developed and strengthened as a result of the U.S.-Armenia cooperation of the past 20 years”.

After Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation and Nikol Pashinyan’s coming to power, many Armenian and Russian media started to write that Pashinyan will immediately lead the country in the direction of the West, and Armenian-Russian relations will be in danger of freezing. These assumptions were made on the basis that Pashinyan led the Yelq bloc, which is considered a pro-Western political force, in the National Assembly. It was this faction that initiated the hearings about leaving the EAEU in the parliament.

After assuming the post of Prime Minister, Pashinyan announced that no one should question Armenian-Russian relations. And this is exactly what members of the “Voice of the People” public club talked about today at a meeting with journalists Arman Ghukasyan and: Tsovinar Kostanyan:

As Ghukasyan mentioned, the “Voice of the People” social club conducted a sociological survey “The level of expectations and confidence of the Armenian society towards the new government”. According to the results of the survey, the society expects economic improvement, which is also connected with the fact that the new government will carry out its activities within the framework of the development of Armenian-Russian relations and EAEU membership.

The survey was conducted among 1200 citizens of Yerevan and marzes aged 18-60. “According to the results of the survey, the degree of confidence of the citizens towards the new government is 9 (on a scale of 1-10 points) on average. 78% of them expect that the economic situation in the country will improve in the coming year, 17% do not think so, and 5% find it difficult to answer the question clearly,” said Ghukasyan.

He emphasized that as far as Armenia’s foreign policy is concerned, 12% of survey participants believe that serious changes should be made, 82% believe that serious changes in foreign policy should not be made, and 6% abstained.

Another expert of the club, Tsovinar Kostanyan, stated that within the framework of the survey, it became clear that 56% of the respondents consider EAEU as the primary direction of economic development of Armenia, for 27%, the EU is the primary direction of economic development of Armenia, 63% believe that relations with the EU should be developed in such a way that it does not interfere with Armenia’s membership in EAEU, and 17% believe that for Armenia EATM does not represent any real interest, that’s why this direction should be replaced by another one.

“The last question in the questionnaire referred to the list of countries with which Armenia’s close cooperation is paramount. Survey participants had the opportunity to choose several options and the picture is as follows. Russia – 74%, European Union – 51%, USA – 43%, Georgia – 43%, Iran – 27%, China – 22%,” said Ts. Kostanyan.

Summarizing the results of the survey, the speakers highlighted four points at the end of the press conference, according to which:

• At the current stage, the degree of confidence of the Armenian society towards the new government is quite high
• The vast majority of citizens expect economic improvement in the coming year
• Most of the survey participants believe that there should be no changes in Armenia’s foreign policy
• The respondents believe that EAEU is the primary direction for Armenia’s economic development, and relations with the EU should be developed in such a way that it does not hinder Armenia’s membership in EAEU.
• According to the opinion of the Armenian society, among several countries, Russia is in the first place for Armenia, with whom relations are of primary importance.
