Azerbaijan, Baku, 29 September / Trend News corr. I.Alizade /
Official Baku analyzes results of negotiations, which were held
between Elmar Mammadyarov and Edvard Nalbandyan, the Azerbaijani
and Armenian Foreign Ministers, in New York on settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "Format and level of negotiations will be
known soon in order to continue them," Araz Azimov, the Azerbaijani
Deputy Foreign Minister and the Azerbaijani President’s special envoy
for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, told journalists on 29 September.

The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasus began in 1988
due to territorial claims by Armenia against Azerbaijan. Armenia has
occupied 20% of the Azerbaijani land including the Nagorno-Karabakh
region and its seven surrounding Districts. Since 1992, these
territories have been under the occupation of the Armenian Forces. In
1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement at which time
the active hostilities ended. The Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group
(Russia, France and USA) are currently holding peaceful negotiations.

The Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers’ last meeting was held
within the framework of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly held
in New York. The meeting was held under Turkish Foreign Minister Ali
Babacan’s mediation.

"At present Azerbaijan is experiencing a period of the presidential
elections campaign and the elections will be held soon. This fact
can influence on the next meeting," the Deputy Minister said.

ARMAVIR, September 29. /ARKA/. World financial crisis will have no
direct impact over Armenia’s banking system, Executive Director of
Conversebank Ararat Ghukasyan told journalists in Armavir.

"Today’s situation in international markets, in the USA, Europe and
Russia in particular, will hardly have impact over the banking system
of Armenia," Ghukasyan said. Armenian economy and banking system will
not encounter surprises and shocks, he said.

Ghukasyan pointed out that most of the banks operating in Armenia do
not use the instruments which led to the financial crisis in the USA
and Europe.

Yet, Armenia will feel crisis effects much later, he said.

"Conversebank" Closed Joint Stock Company was registered on December
20 1993. Since February 2007 it has been owned by an Argentinean
businessman of Armenian origin Eduardo Ernekian.

MLS: RSL End San Jose’s Unbeaten Run

Two goals from young striker Yura Movsisyan and a freekick winner from
Javier Morales more than balance out Darren Huckerby’s brace and give
Real an unexpected three points on the road.

Is there a more twisting and unexpected race than the playoff race
shaping up in the Western Conference?

San Jose, winners of nine straight, put their streak on the line
against Real Salt Lake, who just had their very own home unbeaten
streak ended last week. With key playoff positioning at stake, these
two teams played a spirited, entertaining match featuring two goals
from both San Jose midfeilder Darren Huckeby and Salt Lake forward
Yura Movsisyan.

Ultimately, it was a well-placed free kick goal by Salt Lake’s Javier
Morales that would give RSL just its second road win all season and
precious late-season points.

1st Half
An entertaining first half began in a big way in the 3rd minute when
Yura Movsisyan scored from inside the penalty area off of a nice pass
from Javier Morales. The goal came so quickly that significant
portions of the San Jose crowd had not even found their seats. Down
1-0 before they had even entered, the crowd had a hard time getting
into the game and an alert RSL side controlled the play throughout the
first twenty minutes.

The momentum of the game changed, however, in the 23rd minute. Real,
victimized all season by long balls over the top of the defense,
suffered yet another miscommunication on a long ball. The back four,
seeing Arturo Alvarez in an offside position, did not react to Ryan
Cochrane’s pass, allowing an unmarked — and onside — Darren Huckerby
to sprint in and put the ball in the back of the net. It was the
Englishman’s fifth goal since joining the side in July, and the crowd,
finally seated, suddenly had a reason to become their rowdy boisterous
selves.

Riding the momentum, San Jose almost cashed in again 10 minutes
later. RSL defender Jamison Olave received a yellow card for a
dangerous takedown on Earthquake midfielder Ned Grabavoy just outside
the penalty box. Ronnie O’Brien took the free kick, and Trinidadian
international Scott Sealy knocked it home. However, the offside flag
was up and the goal nullified.

The Olave foul was emblematic of the physicality of the entire first
half. Real Salt Lake, perhaps sensing the playoff implications of this
match, played in a decidedly physical manner. This resulted in a high
number of first-half fouls, two yellow cards, and a couple chippy
shoving-matches between the two sides.

Movsisyan was a bright spot for RSL throughout the first half. Looking
dangerous on balls over the top, the 21-year-old had an excellent
chance just before the break. Busting through the defense, he drilled
a shot, but goalkeeper Joe Cannon was able to make the
save. Movsisyan, however, reached the rebound, but his follow up shot
was turned away by Cochrane.

San Jose then grabbed the momentum going into halftime by controlling
the play and almost getting the lead goal off of a Cochrane header
that sailed just high of the crossbar.

2nd Half
Deuces were wild for Huckerby, who scored his second goal of the match
in the second minute of the second half. The goal came as result of a
quick counter keyed by a quick pass from Alvarez. The former FC Dallas
midfielder found Huckerby who got around defender Nat Borchers and
beat goalkeeper Rimando with a screaming shot from the top of the
box. It looked to all the world like San Jose had taken firm control
of the match.

Movsisyan, however, would hear none of it. Two minutes later, he
answered for Real Salt Lake with one of the more athletic goals of the
2008 MLS season. Kyle Beckerman bounced an awkward pass toward the
Armenian, who gracefully controlled and flicked a right-footed shot by
Cannon. The equalizer, coming so quickly after the Huckerby goal
deflated both the Earthquakes and their fans and decisively swung the
momentum back to Salt Lake.

Ten minutes later, RSL midfielder Robbie Russell was fouled just
outside of the box. Javier Morales, signed to a contract extension
just this week, wasted no time to prove he was well worth the
investment. The Argentine bent the ball around the wall and into the
top near corner for his fifth goal of the year.

For Real Salt Lake, the physicality and aggressive fouling of the
first half had been replaced by hustle and grit. They used both to
maintain the possession and pace of the game over the final 20
minutes. Robbie Findley, the speedy young forward from Oregon State,
entered the game for Clint Mathis in the 70th minute. Buoyed by his
fresh legs and the relentless attacks of young Will Johnson, RSL
extended their pressure to ensure the three points.

The Earthquakes last serious chance came in the 82nd minute when a
handball by Olave gave them a free kick just outside of the box. The
ageless Francisco Lima pushed his set piece just a bit over the bar.

The victory helps Real Salt Lake keep pace in the suddenly very
competitive Western Conference and sets up what should be a spirited
chase between them and Rocky Mountain rival Colorado to make the
postseason. For San Jose, the loss ends their nine-game unbeaten
streak and leaves them in a tie at the bottom of the Western
Conference with their intrastate rivals Los Angeles.

ACCORDING TO ARARAT ZURABIAN, EVERYBODY KNOWS IN ARMENIA WHO FALSIFIES ELECTIONS

Noyan Tapan

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 26, NOYAN TAPAN. The radical opposition, even
if it wishes, is not able to falsify the local self-government
elections, as it does not have a sufficient number of members
in the commissions. Ararat Zurabian, the Board Chairman of the
Armenian National Movement party, a candidate for prefect election
in the Kentron community of Yerevan, stated at the September 26
press conference responding to the assertion Gagik Beglarian, the
current prefect and candidate for prefect made in his interview to
Radio Liberty, according to which the opposition is going to commit
falsifications in the elections of the Kentron community. "Everybody
knows in Armenia who falsifies the elections, and it is just
impermissible to speak about falsifications allegedly prepared by
the opposition," the ANM leader said.

According to A. Zurabian, normal holding of the September 28 local
self-government elections depends on country’s higher authorities:
they have a single chance even if once to organize an electoral
process at the proper level. He also touched upon the rally scheduled
for September 26 evening and the statement of RA Police Chief Alik
Sargsian that one day the Police will no longer tolerate unauthorized
events. "God forbid recurrence of March 1.

The Police can intervene only in case of violation of public order,
but they should not be the first to violate the law," A. Zurabian
said. He affirmed that in general not authorizing and not permitting
rallies is evidence of fear of the authorities. According to him, a
public sector has been formed in the country today, which "terrifies"
the authorities.

A. Zurabian said that according to the data of the survey conducted,
he has two-fold more votes in the Kentron community than it will be
required for gaining a convincing victory. He also added that in case
of preventing 50% expected falsifications his victory will be ensured.

‘Genocides Repeat Themselves’

‘GENOCIDES REPEAT THEMSELVES’
By Mariann Martin, [email protected]

Photojournalist seeks to raise awareness of nearly 1.5M Armenian deaths

Who now remembers the Armenian genocide?

Those were Adolph Hitler’s words in 1942, when his general protested
that the Nazis would never get away with exterminating the Polish Jews.

Ara Oshagan hopes that his work of documenting the lives and stories
of Armenian genocide survivors will help to prove Hitler wrong.

"Genocides repeat themselves," said Oshagan, 44, on Wednesday. "Knowing
about and remembering them are very important parts of ending
genocides, if there can be any hope of prevention."

Oshagan presented his virtual documentation called " i witness" on
Wednesday night at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in downtown Jackson. The
presentation is part of a series called "And Cain Rose Up … A Study
of Modern Genocides" presented by the Lambuth-B’nai Israel Center
for Jewish Studies.

Since 1995, Oshagan has been photographing survivors of the Armenian
genocide, in a project called "The Genocide Project" that includes
oral history given by the survivors.

The Armenian genocide began in 1915 when the Turkish army and
government forced around two million Armenians on death marches
through present day Syria. Almost 1.5 million Armenians died in the
next 18 months.

His interest in the project was sparked after an 80th commemoration
of the genocide in Los Angeles, Oshagan said.

"I met 80 survivors from the genocide, and I realized their stories
had to be told," said Oshagan, who is an avid photographer. "The story
is not as well known as the Holocaust so we started to organize an
oral history program to tell their stories."

Oshagan, who is a research scientist, was born in Beirut, Lebanon.

"There are Armenian diasporic communities all over the world because
the survivors were spread after the genocide," Oshagan said. "The
genocide is very much a part of our community and our psyche."

Oshagan said he grew up hearing stories about the genocide and it
had always moved him deeply. But the stories never included the
terrible details he heard when he began interviewing the survivors
of the genocide.

"They were just kids at the time," Oshagan said. "But it was horrible
and shocking; how they could have lived through those things is
unimaginable."

Oshagan said his work has many components: it is art and history,
but it also has a huge political component. He has displayed his work
in Washington and state capitols to help raise awareness.

"The Turkish government has not accepted responsibility and
acknowledged the genocide, so it remains an unfinished part of the
Armenian people," Oshagan said. "We are trying to confront denial
and reverse it."

Since 1922, the Turkish government has consistently denied the
genocide, saying the Armenians died as part of World War I, Oshagan
said.

David Dietrich, an associate professor of psychology at Lambuth
University, said he played soccer with Oshagan when they were high
school students in Memphis.

When Lambuth began planning their genocide series, Dietrich immediately
thought about his friend.

"I knew he would bring a sense of passion and knowledge to the
project," Dietrich said.

Attendants of the programs on Wednesday night said they came hoping
to learn something new.

"I love history and this caught my attention," said Carolyn Lawhorn,
52, of Jackson. "I am hoping to learn something new to influence my
own writing."

Jacob Vandiver, 21, a senior ethics major at Union University, said
he came because he tries to keep up with current ethical issues.

"I don’t know anything about the Armenian genocide so I am looking
forward to learning more," Vandiver said.

Diaspora Should Counter Turkey’s Divide And Conquer Strategy

DIASPORA SHOULD COUNTER TURKEY’S DIVIDE AND CONQUER STRATEGY
By Harut Sassounian

AZG Armenian Daily
26/09/2008

Diaspora

Armenians worldwide have been following with great concern sinister
Turkish attempts at rapprochement with Armenia.

Their apprehension is based on several factors. The first is that
Turkey has pre-conditioned its rapprochement with the demand that
Armenia participate in a historical commission on the Armenian Genocide
— a devious stratagem to cast doubt on the long established facts
of the Armenian Genocide.

Furthermore, Turkish leaders have publicly announced that their true
intent is to let the world know that Armenians and Turks are engaged
in serious negotiations on the Armenian Genocide, therefore, it is
no longer necessary for the U.S. Congress or parliaments around the
world to adopt resolutions on this issue.

Finally, Turkish leaders have stated that by making a separate deal
with Armenia, they would be rendering the Armenian Diaspora and its
demands irrelevant.

Nevertheless, in assessing the Turkish attempt at reconciliation with
Armenia, one needs to keep in mind the following issues:

In the aftermath of the recent Russian-Georgian war, all countries in
the region have re-evaluated their strategic interests. The opening
of the Turkish border would reduce Armenia’s reliance on Georgian
ports to import more than 80% of its supplies. To protect Armenia’s
national security, the Parliament should immediately adopt legislation
prohibiting foreign ownership of strategic resources, vital industries
and real estate in sensitive border regions.

Turkey, on the other hand, has several reasons for wanting to improve
its relations with Armenia: 1) Having normal diplomatic relations
and an open border with all its neighbors, including Armenia, would
help realize Turkey’s desire of becoming a dominant regional power;
2) To help bring economic prosperity to the most destitute regions of
Eastern Turkey; 3) To provide an opportunity for Turkey to project its
political and economic power across the Armenian border, all the way to
the Central Asian Republics; 4) To downplay the charges of genocide
from the Armenian Diaspora and third countries by establishing a
historical commission; and 5) To facilitate Turkey’s entry into the
European Union, since having open borders with neighboring states is
an EU requirement.

The rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey is also being encouraged
by Europe and the United States, because it would create an alternate
land corridor for the unimpeded transport of vital oil and gas supplies
from the Caspian region to the West. This new initiative also serves
Russia’s interests, as the opening of the Armenian/Turkish border
would diminish the value of Georgia’s Black Sea ports.

While it is understandable why Armenia and Turkey are seeking improved
relations, it remains to be seen whether Armenia would be better off
at the end of these deliberations, given Turkey’s extensive diplomatic
experience compared to that of Armenia. After all, getting concessions
from Turkey is not an easy task, as demonstrated by the lengthy and
unproductive negotiations over Cyprus. What counts is the end result,
rather than the process itself!

Rather than getting involved in acrimonious debates with Armenia’s
leadership, we should acknowledge that Armenia’s interests may
sometimes diverge from those of the Diaspora, and that the two would
take different positions on some issues, given the differences in
their status. Therefore, Diaspora communities should pursue their
own agenda, independently from that of Armenia.

In order to counter Turkey’s attempts to make the Diaspora irrelevant,
Armenians worldwide should continue their efforts to expose Turkish
crimes against humanity and go beyond mere genocide recognition by
expanding their activities to the following areas:

– Pass resolutions in the U.S. Congress and European parliaments,
seeking to defend the human rights of the Armenian minority in Turkey,
particularly the rights of Armenian churches and schools;

– Demand the lifting of an undeclared ban on Armenian citizens of
Turkey to enter its diplomatic service or hold high-ranking military
posts;

– File lawsuits in the European Court of Human Rights and U.S. Federal
Courts to force Turkey to return to the Armenian Patriarchate of
Constantinople (Istanbul) the hundreds of Armenian church buildings
confiscated by the Turkish government after the Genocide;

– Seek the return of personal properties expropriated by Turkey;

– Expose the muzzling of Turkish citizens under Article 301 of the
Turkish Penal Code which makes it a crime to refer to the Armenian
Genocide; and

– Strongly counter all attempts by Turkish officials and their hired
lackeys to deny and distort the facts of the Armenian Genocide.

Such actions would make it perfectly clear to Turkish officials
that unless they deal directly with the Diaspora and reach a fair
settlement on the damages emanating from the Armenian Genocide,
they would continue to be hounded around the globe, regardless of
any agreements they might have reached with the Armenian government.

Gas Prices Up For Armenia

GAS PRICES UP FOR ARMENIA

Neftegaz.RU

Russia

As reported by Interfax Armrosgazprom CEO Karen Karapetyan announced
Tuesday, in time of the meeting with Armenian President Serge Sargsyan,
that starting from April 1, 2009 Russia’s gas for Armenia’s clients
will cost $154/ths cu meters. And it’s only the beginning. The price
will soar to $200/ths cu meters from April 1, 2010, Karapetyan said.

The growth is connected with the price increase on Russia’s energy
market, but Armenia is expected to shift to European prices from 2011.

It was not of a big surprise for Armenia’s president. He said that
negotiations with Gazprom were based on the gradual increase in
gas prices. The growth in prices won’t significantly affect the
population, Sargsyan promised, pointing out that it will create
brilliant opportunity for the business to improve competitive ability.

Sargsyan urged Armrosgazprom to actively proceed with Armenia’s
gasification.

Russia’s gas monopoly Gazprom signed in September of 2008 the contract
for gas supplies to Armenia in 2009 and 2010. Gazprom supplied 2.05
billion cu meters in 2007.
