Hrant Dink (1954-1915)

Hrant Dink (1954-1915)
By Khatchig Mouradian

The Armenian Weekly
January 20, 2007

The above date, 1915, is not a typographical mistake.

On Saturday, April 24, 1915, Ottoman-Turkish soldiers arrested
about 200 Armenian intellectuals~Wwriters, journalists and community
leaders~Win Istanbul, exiling them to the interior of the Ottoman
Empire where they would be killed. The plan was to behead the Armenian
community by annihilating its leadership and then to cleanse the
entire population. The day of the arrests marks the beginning of the
Armenian Genocide.

On Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, also in Istanbul, another prominent Armenian
intellectual, Hrant Dink, was assassinated in front of the editorial
offices of his Armenian weekly newspaper Agos.

Hrant Dink is a victim of the Armenian Genocide.

And the Armenian Genocide continues.

Not only because denial is the last phase of Genocide.

But because the killing continues.

It was NOT an individual who killed Hrant Dink. So while Turkish
authorities are looking for a killer out loose in the streets, the
real killer is the Turkish state, which continues to foster a culture
of violence, assassinations, killings, oppression, and denial. The
killer is the Turkish state, which indoctrinates its citizens from
an early age that the Armenian Genocide is a myth, an agenda, pushed
by the West to destroy Turkey.

"A bullet has been fired at democracy and freedom of expression,"
said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Yes, the bullet
was Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, under which Dink was
prosecuted twice.

The person who pulled the trigger was executing the will of the Turkish
state. Like his Prime Minister, government, army and the so-called
~SDeep-State,~T he wanted to make the world believe that there was no
Armenian Genocide. Like Talaat Pasha, he believed that the Armenian
question could be solved by killing those who made demands.

We shall remember you, Hrant, together with Varoujan, Siamanto,
Zohrab and all the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Hrant Dink – Assassination condemned by Joseph Daul, Chairman of the
EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament

The Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament has
condemned the assassination in Istanbul on Friday of Hrant Dink, a
Turkish journalist of Armenian origin. For Joseph Daul this act of
violence is completely unacceptable. "I strongly condemn and deplore
every attack on freedom of expression and on freedom of the press,
which are at the heart of the values of our society. On my own behalf
and on behalf of the Members of the EPPE-ED Group, I present my
sincere condolences to the family of the victim."

The Chairman of the largest political group in the European
Parliament has asked the Turkish legal authorities to quickly
investigate this outrage.

Germany Indignant At Disgusting Assassination of Hrant Dink

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The German MFA spread Germany’s official statement
as a EU Chairman-in-Office state on bilingual Armenian-Turkish `Agos’
weekly editor Hrant Dink’s assassination. The statement says, the EU
Chairman-in-Office state is indignant at this disgusting murder and
expresses its deep condolences to the family members and friends of
Hrant Dink.’ `The Chairman-in-Office is sure that the Turkish
authorities will reveal this criminal act as soon as possible and does
not have slightest doubts that Ankara will keep on going through the
way of fulfilling freedom of opinion,’ the statement says.

The German MFA also underscores Hrant Dink was a brave journalist, who
realized that his professional activity on the fight for democracy and
freedom of opinion, harbors a great risk for his own life. `But at the
same time he always kept the sense of proportion and avoided provoking
confrontation. He unambiguously was in favor of democratic reforms in
Turkey. That’s why Hrant Dink enjoyed great respect not only among
different layers of Turkish society but also in Europe,’ says the
document, RIA `Novosti’ reports.

The Hornet’s Nest

The hornet’s nest Stallone is planning to put his foot to

Saturday, 20 January 2007 Written by Alexander G. Rubio

er_stallone1_large.jpg

I think it’s safe to say a man of Sylvester Stallone’s means can
afford to globetrot with the best of them. But prudence should perhaps
dictate that he scratch Turkey off his shortlist of potential vacation
spots. As the whole pre-Nobel Prize saga of Orhan Pamuk, and related
cases, show, there are certain historical topics that are prone to
stir up a bit of… bad blood… in that part of the world – One of
them is, of course, the question of the status of the Kurdish
population. But chief among them is perhaps the festering sore that is
the Armenian genocide ()
.

As recent events have shown, it is a question that still provokes
deadly conflict. The murder of the Armenian journalist and editor
Hrant Dink, who had been the victim of even official persecution
( ison/honorarymembers/turkey/hrantdink/)
, is a glaring example of just how inflamed this topic really is.

And this is the hornet’s nest Stallone is planning to put his foot to.

( ink_large.jpg) The
star of such movies as, "Rocky", its recent sequel "Rocky Balboa", and
the decidedly non-pacifist "Rambo" is planning to shoot a movie based
on the book "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh"
( _Days_of_Musa_Dagh) about the
Armenian Genocide by the Austrian author Franz Werfel, according to
The Denver Post, via Filmstalker
( /2007/01/stallone_may_direct_armenian_g.ht
ml) .

During World War I, as the Ottoman Turkish empire fought Russian
forces, some of the Armenian minority in eastern Anatolia sided with
the Russians.

Turkey took reprisals. On 24 April 1915 it rounded up and killed
hundreds of Armenian community leaders.

In May 1915, the Armenian minority, two or three million strong, was
forcefully deported and marched from the Anatolian borders towards
Syria and Mesopotamia (now Iraq). Many died en route.

The issue has long been a contentious topic in Turkey, which claims
the 1915 events () were not
genocide, something that has become a bit of a problem in Turkish
relations to the European Union, which it hopes to join as a member,
due to the European Parliament’s decision
( tion.152/current_category.7/affirmation_detail.htm l)
to recognise as genocide the extermination of around 1.5 million
civilian Armenians in Turkey (the Ottoman Empire at the time) in 1915.

Late last year, French MPs also passed a bill making it a crime to
deny that the Ottoman Turkish empire committed genocide against
Armenians, a decision that delighted Armenians and infuriated the
Turks.

For years Stallone’s wanted to create an epic, and the book that
intrigues him is Franz Werfel’s "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh,"
detailing the Turkish genocide of its Armenian community in
1915. (After futile attempts to turn the novel into a movie,
filmmakers finally succeeded in 1982, but it was a low-profile
production.)

French ships eventually rescued some Armenians, and Stallone has his
favorite scene memorized: "The French ships come, and they’ve dropped
the ladders and everybody has climbed up the side. The ships sail. The
hero, the one who set up the rescue, has fallen asleep, exhausted,
behind a rock on the slope above. The camera pulls back, and the ships
and the sea are on one side, and there’s one lonely figure at the top
of the mountain, and the Turks are coming up the mountain by the
thousands on the far side."

A pretty great shot.

The movie would be "an epic about the complete destruction of a
civilization," Stallone said. Then he laughed at the ambition. "Talk
about a political hot potato. The Turks have been killing that subject
for 85 years."

And the blow-back has not been slow in coming. UK daily The
Independent
( ple/pandora/article2162835.ece)
reports that the plans have attracted the wrath of the Turkish
community in Hollywood.

( an_genocide_turkey_large.JPG)
A group calling themselves the Association on Struggle Against
Armenian Genocide Acknowledgement is targeting Stallone with an angry
letters campaign urging him not to make the film.

"The book is full of lies, since the author got his information from
nationalist and radical Armenians," says the association’s chairman,
Savas Egilmez.

"We have already sent necessary documents about the mentioned days to
the producer of the film. Our allies will urge the producer not to
produce this film."

On the eve of the orchestration of his own genocide against the Jews,
Hitler took comfort from the fact that such an atrocity could
seemingly pass all but unnoticed to the outside world. "Who remembers
the Armenians?", he asked. Well, quite few, and more each day, seems
to be the answer.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR CHRISTIAN
AID VISITS ANTELIAS

The president of the newly established International Institution for
Christian Aid in Canada, Dr. Elie Kamal, visited His Holiness Aram I in
Antelias on January 18 with his aide.

Dr. Kamal explained to the Pontiff the aims and perspectives of the newly
established institution. Founded mostly by Christian immigrants from the
Middle East, the institution seeks to support the Christian communities of
the Middle East through fund-raising and other efforts with the goal of
strengthening Christian presence in the region.

The Armenian Pontiff highly praised the initiative, stressing the importance
of Christian presence in the Middle East as an indigenous element in the
region. "Christians belong to the Middle East; they are not new comers to
this region. They are integral and important part of the societies, cultures
and civilizations of the Middle East. Therefore, an appropriate
corresponding approach should be adopted towards Christianity. The policy of
the churches of the region is to stay here, to strengthen their community
life, to revitalize their activities and to reorganize their participation
in the total life of the societies", His Holiness said.

The Pontiff talked about the Muslim-Christian dialogue in the region and the
importance of coordinating efforts in this field. He stressed on preserving
the Christian identity of Jerusalem as the birthplace of Christianity.

EU Head: We Should Not Permit a Dead-end Situation in `Frozen Conflicts’
18.01.2007 19:16 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ OSCE member states should not permit a dead-end
situation in frozen conflicts in the Post-Soviet territory, today
stated new head of European Union, German Foreign Minister
Frank-Walter Steinmeier speaking in the OSCE Permanent Council. `We
call upon all sides to accept OSCE mediation mission and look at it as
a possibility. Where a readiness will be for constructivism in dialog,
the EU will give all kind of support,’ he stressed.

The minister underlined that the OSCE leadership under the
chairmanship of Spain holds to a position of giving high level
political profile by the organization and the EU is ready to cooperate
in that direction. He said that the OSCE must intensify dialog based
on universal values, norms and standards of organizations.

He also underscored that OSCE plays an important role in the European
integration process and takes actions for establishing a confidence
building model for other regions in the world. But member states must
work harder to reach security and stability through dialog. The
minister stressed that the EU and OSCE must work together in the
Central Asia and Kosovo.

of Culture and Tourism and Van Administration. It is noted in the
statement that the Church of the Holy Cross was built in 915-921
during the rule of Gagik I Artsruni.

Let us remind that it had been announced earlier that the Church
would be opened on April 24 – the Armenian Genocide Day. However,
after the protests of the Armenian Diaspora, particularly the Armenian
Patriarch of Constantinople Mesrop Archbishop Mutafian, the date of
opening of the Church was moved.

Discussions On Opening Armenian-Turkish Border By Ankara Premature

DISCUSSIONS ON OPENING ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER BY ANKARA PREMATURE

PanARMENIAN.Net
18.01.2007 13:19 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The problem of opening the Armenian-Turkish border
by Ankara is much more complicated than it seems from the first
look, said specialist in Turkic philology doctor Ruben Safrastyan,
the director of Institute of Oriental Studies of RA NAS (National
Academy of Sciences) to the PanARMENIAN.Net journalist. In his words,
the matter is not about an isolated decision on the scope of foreign
policy, but about revising the course towards Armenia, which has been
worked out by Turkey during a number of years. "That course is based on
exerting pressure on Armenia aiming at getting compromises in a number
of issues, and not on principles of searching mutually acceptable
compromises in problematic issues, which exist in relations of both
countries. As evidence serve the repeatedly claimed preconditions
for normalizing the relations by Turkey," he underlined.

In Safrastyan’s opinion, in the framework of that course closed
borders with Armenia, which does not have access to the sea, "is a
significant means of exerting pressure or, to say it in another way,
a tool for fulfilling the above mentioned course of pressure." He
stressed that the opening of border by Turkey is possible only after
full revision of its political line towards Armenia. "Surely, it’s a
difficult process, which demands a lot of time, revision of a number
of stereotypes and refusal from some basic directions of strategic
lines of Turkish diplomacy towards Armenia," Safrastyan thinks.

The director of the Institute of Oriental Studies expressed regret that
there are nor signs that attest to the beginning of that process. "The
course, which has been worked out towards Armenia in the past decade,
is evident in Turkish political establishment: not a single significant
political party, not a single stream of social-political thought do
not put forward something, which would remind a remote alternative
approach. My statement equally refers both to Islamists, Kemalists
and to ultra-nationalistic, right and left wing parties. The analysis
of a number latest publications in Turkish Media allows us to make
conclusion that some influential American circles, which of course,
pursue there own goals, have intensified pressure on Turkey on that
issue. As a means of pressure they use the most probable adoption of
a resolution on the Armenian Genocide of 1915 after the Democratic
Party won the November held elections.

The Genocide towards the Armenian nation: they underline that the
only way to avoid it is to open the blocked border, which has been
closed over 15 years ago." Safrastyan said.

Alongside he noticed that if even the ruling Islamic Party of Justice
and Development were ready to make not great compromises in that issue,
the supreme military commanders of the country has enough resources
to blockade them. "Particularly, the National Security Council, which
traditionally is under the influence of military commanders, still in
2000 referred the whole complex of issues towards Armenia to the sphere
of national security, i.e. took the right of casting vote. Proceeding
from the above-told opinions I consider the discussions on opening
Armenian-Turkish border in near future as premature, which do not
have real basis," stated doctor Safrastyan.
