Are we ready for a black president?

Chester DailyLocal.com, USA
April 6 2008

Are we ready for a black president?
NO … I DON’T THINK SO

Barack Obama will not be our next president.

Why?

Simple. You see, Sen. Obama was right when he discussed race on
sports station 610-WIP last week. This country still is made up of
those who are `typical white people.’

The bottom line is that this country for all of its political
correctness and self-pronounced modern attitude toward race, religion
and sexual orientation is no better than it was 50 years ago.

The only thing we’ve gotten better at is hiding it and lying about
it. We all smile and discuss race, religion and sexual orientation in
forums and panels, and it all sounds so great.

But really, it’s all a lie. We all know it; I know it.

Look, I am the first person to admit either laughing at or telling an
inappropriate joke targeting a group of people. But I also tell as
many Armenian jokes (my heritage) as Polish jokes. And despite the
humor albeit in bad taste, I don’t really take it to the next level
of ethnic or racial hatred.

No, Barack Obama will not be the next president because he’s black.
This country is not ready for a black president. It’s not ready for a
woman president, but if you ask many white people privately, they’ll
tell you they’d prefer a woman president before a black president any
day of the week.

And that’s sad. And it’s also shocking. But it’s also something I’ve
only accepted over the past few weeks.

How did I come to this realization? I suppose it’s come from
co-workers past and present, people in the neighborhoods, people in
the grocery store, even people at the ice hockey rink.

Mention Barack Obama and they roll their eyes, their faces turn red
or they simply make inappropriate remarks that I haven’t heard in a
long, long time. They use the `N’ word, say they’ll move to another
country or worse.

Why did I believe things were different? Maybe I got caught up in all
of the energy and buzz that’s come with the continuing battle between
Obama and Hillary Clinton. Maybe I thought the country had finally
realized he best person for the job of president would be the person
most qualified – whether it be Obama, Clinton or John McCain.

Maybe I thought that age, gender or race really had no matter this
time and that people were really ready for change. Maybe people were
really tired of the same old thing, tired of the repeated mistakes of
the past.

I was wrong.

We’re still a nation of Archie Bunkers. We’ve just got the marketing
and packaging down a little better. In other words, we’re still
bigots, just bigots in a better box.

But you know, there’s nothing I can do about other people. I can’t
make people not be racists or bigots. If they’re going to hate people
because of color, national origin or sexual orientation, that’s their
problem.

And when it comes to the election, I will be making my choice based
on an analysis of the candidates’ views, positions, plans and ideas.
It will have nothing to do with anything else.

Some people should take long, hard looks at themselves in the mirrors
and ask: Am I being the kind of person I want my kids to be?

Unfortunately, they may not like the answer.

YES … I THINK WE ARE

Sen. Barack Obama can be elected the first black president of the
United States of America. I’m not saying he will, just saying he has
a shot.

American politics is filled with firsts.

A country as diverse as the United States is bound to have plenty of
firsts as the nation grows and invariably changes.

The president elected this fall will be a `first.’

Presumptive Republican candidate Sen. John McCain would be the oldest
person elected to a first term. (He would also be the second who was
a prisoner of war. The unlucky first was Andrew Jackson.)

Democratic presidential contender Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would
be the first woman.

And, of course, Democratic contender Obama would be the first black.

Racism undeniably exists. It is still bad in some places. It is
ebbing.

Prejudices against groups in American politics have always existed.
Racism just happens to be the worst.

The Pennsylvania Democratic primary for president is a politically
delicious test of prejudices and conflicts: a choice between a white
gal and a black guy. Both are left of center – need we say, gasp,
liberals? They struggle to differentiate each other. They know they
can’t whack each other personally too much because the winner needs
– desperately needs – the loser’s supporters in the fall.

A wickedly funny political cartoon by Rob Rogers of The Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette pictured a black female TV reporter asking a blue-collar
white guy: `Will you be a racist voter or a sexist voter?’

The resolution of prejudices in American politics is inevitably
conflict. Whether it was the Irish, Italian, Jew, whatever, the
prejudices of the status quo in American politics is generally
settled by electoral battle. Occasionally, a riot helps things along.

Each group was treated with suspicion as they immigrated here. (Need
we say Mexicans today?) Each group spent a couple generations or so
integrating into American life.

The most important actions to level the playing field for the black
community in the United States were passage of the Civil Rights Act
and Voting Rights Act in the mid-1960s. Those laws guaranteed
protections that were especially important for the black community at
that time. It should be noted these rights also apply to all
Americans as well.

The political progress in the black community has been remarkable
since then: mayors, state legislators, governors, federal
legislators. Many blacks, particularly those politicians with strong
people skills, have been elected in majority- white areas, too.

Presidential election, however, is the ultimate test.

The wicked commentary of the cartoonist Rogers will be applied to a
national stage with either Clinton or Obama.

Just don’t count Clinton or Obama out. The Iraq war is unpopular. The
economy is just-about-officially in recession.

McCain has issues as well. His aforementioned age. He supports the
war. His incumbent Republican president is handing him a rotten
economy. Republican conservatives are suspicious of his maverick
style.

Running for any office in America is about opportunity and timing.

It is an admittedly high bar for Clinton to overcome sexism and Obama
racism – and for McCain to explain himself.

Overcoming suspicions and prejudices in politics is a fact of
American life. Good pols, going back to the battles of Alexander
Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson at the founding of our nation, have
seen it as an opportunity.

Bush Seeks To Fill Armenia Envoy Post

BUSH SEEKS TO FILL ARMENIA ENVOY POST
By Michael Doyle, [email protected]

Miami Herald
April 2 2008
FL

President Bush announced his nominee for ambassador to Armenia,
a position that has been mired in controversy.

WASHINGTON — President Bush is trying again to fill a long-vacant
ambassador’s seat to Armenia that’s gotten entangled in U.S. politics.

In a move that could either revive a Capitol Hill conflict or reveal
that passions have cooled, Bush has announced plans to nominate career
diplomat Marie L. Yovanovitch as the ambassador to Armenia. If she’s
confirmed, she would replace the previous ambassador, John Evans, who
was recalled in 2006 after he gave speeches in California endorsing
claims of an Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

Those claims inflamed sentiment in Turkey. Last fall, Turkish officials
protested bitterly after the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved
a resolution that condemned the killings of Armenians from 1915 to
1923 as genocide. Democrats withdrew support for the resolution after
President Bush called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to ask that it not
be considered by the full House of Representatives.

The collapse of the House resolution means that the Yovanovitch
nomination may become this year’s highest-profile issue for
Armenian-Americans who have championed the genocide issue for decades.

It also could become mired in the U.S. presidential campaign.

Armenian-Americans make up sizable voting blocs in California and New
Jersey, and candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is a member of the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which will consider Yovanovitch’s
nomination.

A 1980 graduate of Princeton who later earned a master’s degree at
the National War College, Yovanovitch has been serving since the
summer of 2005 as the U.S. ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic. She
previously served in Russia.

The United States last had a permanent representative in Armenia two
years ago. Evans said he was recalled from the post early after he
told audiences in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area and Fresno,
Calif., that Armenians were the victims of genocide.

Evans said his characterization displeased Turkey and his State
Department superiors. Turkey maintains that the word "genocide"
mischaracterizes a complicated war in which many people died on
both sides.

"Armenian-Americans have attempted to extricate and isolate their
history from the complex circumstances in which their ancestors were
embroiled," the Turkish Embassy said in a statement last year.

"In so doing, they describe a world populated only by white-hatted
heroes and black-hatted villains."

The unsettled question for Yovanovitch is whether she can avoid the
fate of Bush’s last nominee, career diplomat Richard Hoagland.

Armenian-American activists and their Capitol Hill allies stymied
Hoagland’s nomination. He repeatedly ducked the word "genocide"
during his June 2006 Senate confirmation hearing, opting instead for
words such as "tragedy" and "horrific."

Chairman Of District Electoral Commission N 13 Accused Of Rigging Vo

CHAIRMAN OF DISTRICT ELECTORAL COMMISSION N 13 ACCUSED OF RIGGING VOTING RESULTS

Noyan Tapan
April 2, 2008

YEREVAN, APRIL 2, NOYAN TAPAN. The preliminary examination of the
criminal case instituted on the fact of rigging voting results at
polling station N 13/10, which has been completed in the RA Special
Investigation Service, grounded that during recounting of voting
results done on February 23, 2008 in district electoral commission N 13
of Yerevan’s Erebuni community, 151 ballot-papers voted for another
candidate, Levon Ter-Petrosian, were revealed in the envelope of
ballot-papers voted for Serge Sargsian. Seyran Mkrtumian, the Chairman
of district electoral commission N 13, for the purpose of concealing
the registered inaccuracy, rigged the recounting results. That is,
secretly from commission members and observers he hid the envelope
with 146 ballot-papers voted for L. Ter-Petrosian and confirmed
the protocol on recounting results without entering the data on 146
ballot-papers existing in the hidden envelope.

According to the report of the RA Prosecutor General’s Office, on the
basis of the obtained evidence, accusation is brought to S. Mkrtumian
by Article 150, RA Criminal Code. He admitted the accusation brought
to him and confessed his guilt.

The criminal case has been sent to the general jurisdiction court of
Erebuni and Nubarashen communities to examine it on the substance.

BAKU: Meeting Of Coordination Council Of World Azerbaijani And Turki

MEETING OF COORDINATION COUNCIL OF WORLD AZERBAIJANI AND TURKISH DIASPORA ORGANIZATIONS ENDS IN BERLIN

Azeri Press Agency
March 28 2008
Azerbaijan

Berlin-APA. The meeting of the Coordination Council of World
Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora Organizations ended in Berlin. Press
service of the State Committee on Work with Azerbaijanis Living Abroad
told APA that the chairman of the committee Nazim Ibrahimov made a
speech on "The role of Diasporas in the development of the relations
among Turkish-speaking states".

He said that the discussions covered the most important targets lying
ahead of Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora organizations. Nazim
Ibrahimov underlined that Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora
organizations were contributing to the development of the relations
among the Turkish-speaking states.

"First steps are being taken to establish the Parliamentary Assembly of
the Turkish-speaking countries, the issue on setting up the Summits’
secretariat of heads of governments and states of Turkish-speaking
countries is one of the contributions to the cooperation among
Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora organizations," he said.

Chief of the President’s Office socio-political department Ali Hasanov
said that the main issue was the activeness of Diaspora members in
all spheres.

"Diaspora organizations participate in all socio-political,
humanitarian events, including the events on the state level and
increase their importance," he said.

Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Germany
Parviz Shahbazov mentioned that the meeting coincided with the
opening of Azerbaijani Year in Germany. According to the ambassador,
the coincidence of the two events allows the members of Azerbaijani
and Turkish Diasporas to get acquainted with the classic and rich
examples of Azerbaijani culture.

President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, chairman of the
Management Board of World Azerbaijanis’ Coordination Council Mahmud
Karimov said that there was a need to use new means of propaganda
to prevent the propaganda of Armenian Diaspora and Armenian genocide
claims, as well as to inform the international community of Azerbaijani
and Turkish truths. Mahmud Karimov said it was important to establish a
common Turkish language, it could accelerate the process of integration
and ground the establishment of unique Turkish television that would
be transmitted in all the Turkish-speaking states.

Azerbaijani parliamentarian Ganira Pashayeva made speech on "The role
of our Diasporas in the solution of common problems". She said that
all the Diaspora members should know the common problems to reach
more productive results of joint activity of Azerbaijani and Turkish
Diaspora organizations. The parliamentarian offered to prepare a
book covering common problems, translate it into various languages
and distribute among the Diaspora organizations.

President of Assembly of Turkish American Associations Nurten Ural said
the cooperation between Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora organizations
in America worried the Armenian Diaspora.

Tomris Azeri, president of Azerbaijan Society of America, also said
the present results of the joint activity of Azerbaijani and Turkish
Diaspora organizations worried the Armenians. Tomris Azeri spoke about
the importance of US Azeris Network and said the Diaspora members
immediately receive information about all necessary documents and
events through the network.

Speaking about the establishment of unique Turkish television Nizami
Jafarov said it was important for establishing the ideological bases
of the Turkish unity. The parliamentarian said the television should
be financed at the expenditure of Turkish-speaking countries’ budget.

He noted that it would be expedient to base the main office of the
television in Istanbul, but the television should have representations
in all the Turkish-speaking countries.

Chairman of Benelux Azerbaijanis’ Congress Sahil Gasimli said it was
planned to open a second Sunday School and establish the Azeri-language
radio in the Netherlands. The radio is planned to broadcast programs
in English, Dutch and other languages.

Decision was made to establish 9-member Management Board of the
he Coordination Council of World Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora
Organizations. The Council will also have a secretariat and this
structure will be located in a European country.

Berlin Declaration was adopted at the end of the meeting. According to
the declaration, the Coordination Council welcomed the initiative on
establishing Azerbaijan-Turkey Interparliamentary Assembly put forth in
the 11th Friendship, Brotherhood, and Cooperation Congress of Turkic
States and Communities, supported the idea of establishing Summits’
secretariat of heads of states of Turkish-speaking countries and called
on the governments of Turkish-speaking countries to take the related
measures for its implementation. The document also supported the
decision of the 11th Friendship, Brotherhood, and Cooperation Congress
of Turkic States and Communities on establishing unique television
of the Turkish-speaking countries. The document offers to determine
a related strategy for promoting truths of Azerbaijan and Turkey
basing on the proposals of the Coordination Council members, to hold
a joint forum of Azerbaijani and Turkish businessmen living in foreign
countries in line with "The strategy of Joint Activity of Azerbaijani
and Turkish Diaspora organizations", ensure establishment of Advisory
Council, to mobilize activity of Azerbaijani and Turkish communities
for the implementation of the decision passed at the 11th Friendship,
Brotherhood, and Cooperation Congress of Turkic States and Communities
on establishing a museum demonstrating the history and culture of
Turkish-speaking peoples and carry out the activities related to the
"Strategy of Joint Activity" in order to defend the rights of Iraqi
Turkmen and attract the attention of the international community to
the solution of the problems of repatriation of Ahiska Turks.

Another document adopted at the meeting of the Coordination Council of
World Azerbaijani and Turkish Diaspora Organizations is the statement
on the 90th anniversary of the genocide of Azerbaijanis on March 31,
1918. The Coordination Council once more appeals to the international
community calling to condemn terrorist and genocide acts committed
by Armenian nationalists against Turkish peoples and especially
Azerbaijanis, and calls the international organizations and world
countries to give unbiased assessment to the developments.

Members of the Coordination Council of World Azerbaijani and Turkish
Diaspora Organizations appealed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev
and President of Turkey Abdullah Gul.

Following this, "Gobustan" International Award on the results
of 2007 was presented. The awards were presented to president of
Assembly of Turkish American Associations Nurten Ural, president of
Azerbaijan Society of America Tomris Azeri and director of Norwegian

Organizations was set up in the first Forum of heads of Azerbaijani
and Turkish Diaspora organizations. The Coordination Council set up
to coordinate the activity of Azerbaijani and Turkish communities
has 101 members.

NAIRA ZOHRABYAN: DIALOGUE IS THE ONLY WAY OUT OF THE INTERNAL POLITICAL TENSION

armradio.am
28.03.2008 16:10

Serious political priorities are enlisted in the Coalition Agreement
recently signed by four parliamentary parties, member of the Prosperous
Armenia Party Naira Zohrabyan told a press conference on March 28. She
expressed hope that the coalition will work effectively and will
solve the tasks assigned to it.

According to Naira Zohrabyan, everyone is responsible for the events
in Yerevan on March 1 – the opposition, the authorities including
the Prosperous Armenia Party. She noted that the only way out of the
internal political tension in the country is the dialogue between
all interested parties, including the radical opposition.

"Any issue, including that of releasing the arrested, should be solved
via dialogue at a round table," she noted. However, according to Naira
Zohrabyan, the fact that the radical opposition sets preconditions
for launching dialogue creates an impression that the opposition
refuses from dialogue.

Les Nouveaux Visages De L’Equipe Municipale: Lyon

LES NOUVEAUX VISAGES DE L’EQUIPE MUNICIPALE: LYON
par Catherine Lagrange

Le Point
27 mars 2008
France

Patrice Beghain.

Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, 29 ans, l’etoile montante

general sortant UMP, Jean Flacher, indeboulonnable depuis 1981.

Politiquement, Richard Brumm reconnaît n’avoir jamais vote a gauche
