Armenia chalked up their second win of the International Tournament
after beating Belarus 2-1.

Ara Hakobyan scored his second goal of the tournament to lead Armenia
to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Belarus yesterday.

The meeting between the two teams who won their opening match on
Saturday, was a nervy affair but Armenia, who finished the game with
10 men, had the last laugh thanks to substitute Hakobyan whose late
strike sent his team top of the table with six points from two matches.

Belarus had opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute,
Viachaslav Hleb, the brother of Arsenal stalwart Aleksandr Hleb,
driving the ball home after profiting from a mistake by Armenia
goalkeeper Mayis Azizyan.

Another dangerous attack by Belarus almost yielded a second goal on
16 minutes as Vitaly Bulyga advanced down the right before sending
in a low far-post cross where Raman Vasiliuk’s sliding effort came
off the woodwork.

Belarus paid dearly for this miss as Armenia drew level on 18 minutes
thanks to a header by Ararat Arakelyan.

The game remained balanced after the change of ends but 13 minutes
into the second half, Armenia should have moved ahead.

Hakobyan, who hit Armenia’s winner against Malta, drifted into the
box before setting up Samuel Melkonyan whose first-time volley from
routine distance sailed well over the bar.

Only a tipping save from Belarus goalkeeper Aliaksandr Liantsevich from
a fierce strike by substitute Karen Aleksanyan denied the improving
Armenians a second goal with 14 minutes remaining. However, from the
ensuing corner, taken by Aghvan Lazarian, Hakobyan slipped past an
opponent before rolling the ball home.

Four minutes from time, Armenia were reduced to ten men after defender
Alexander Tadeosyan was sent off by referee Anton Zammit for a second
booking but Jan Poulsen’s men held on to move closer to winning
the tournament.

Turkish Protesters Disrupt Holocaust And Hrant Dink Commemorations

TURKISH PROTESTERS DISRUPT HOLOCAUST AND HRANT DINK COMMEMORATIONS

Armenian Genocide

One of the Welsh Armenians said: "This is our holiest shrine. Our
grandparents who perished in the Genocide do not have marked
graves. This is where we remember them" Eilian Williams of Wales
Armenia Solidarity said that he blamed the so-called "Committee for
the Protection of Turkish Rights", under the leadership of Hal Savas
for the crime. We shall repair the cross again and again no matter
how often it is desecrated.

We also challange the UK government and the Turkish Embassy to condemn
this racist attack.

The Holocaust commemoration was a gesture of friendship by Welsh
Armenians towards the Jewish and Roma communities During the
Prayers for the Holocaust victims, the said Turkish Committee used
a loud-speaker to disrupt proceedings. Finally Martin Shipton, chief
reporter for the "Western Mail" the national newspaper of Wales gave
his tribute to Hrant Dink (also representing the National Union of
Journalists). The Turkish protesters also disrupted his speech.

Gorres vs. Darchinyan Fight to be Aired Over the Internet via
neTVision

PhilBoxing.com
Sat, 26 Jan 2008

The Philippine boxing scene is in for another high profile match as
our country’s very own Z "The Dream" Gorres goes toe to toe against
the sensational Armenian slugger Vic "The Raging Bull" Darchinyan
this February 2 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel. Titled "Now or Never",
the heavily-hyped event is set for an important prize: the right to
face the current IBF World Super Flyweight champion, Dmitri Kirilov,
for a title match.

"Now or Never", a promotion of Solar Sports in cooperation with ALA
Promotion, will begin at 6pm, Philippine time. Not to disappoint
Filipino boxing fans around the world, the event will also be "aired"
over the Internet in real time via the neTVision website
(). As more and more boxing enthusiasts
use their computer for entertainment, neTVision allows easy access to
the live fight for those who do not have cable TV (or to those whose
international cable licenses do not carry the fight).

Z Gorres is rapidly becoming one of the country’s finest boxers. In
his last battle, he fashioned out an 8th round TKO win against Eric
Ortiz – effectively showing the world his boxing ability. With a
record of 27 wins (15 by knockout) and only 2 losses, Gorres is
attributed with "great stamina and good footwork". His 12-round
battle against Fernando Montiel was well-perceived by the boxing
community and was a showcase of his in-ring talent – giving the world
a glimpse of things to come.

On the other end, the Armenian Vic Darchinyan is known as a heavy
puncher and is an absolute terror in the ring. He started his career
with a 28-0 record until he met his match against another Filipino
sensation, Nonito Donaire, earning him his first professional loss.
Even though reeling from the defeat, Darchinyan remains a formidable
opponent – 23 of his fights were won by knockouts. His upcoming
battle with Gorres will be a statement fight, a sweet revenge against
Filipino boxers if he wins.

The event will also feature the Philippines’ various boxing talents.
The undercards include Mark Jason Melliguen of Bacolod taking on Tia
Koswara of Indonesia; Romeo Jakosalem against William Kickitt of
Australia; and James Bacon of Mandaue City versus Diosdado Perez of
Manila. "Now or Never" will also hold matches for up-and-coming local
fighters: Rollen Del Castillo, Fabio Marfa, and Alejandro Belonguel
of Mandaue City; Ruel Cuizon of Manila; JV Tuazon of New Jersey, USA;
and Rey Villar of Sultan Kudarat.

Will Gorres reign supreme in this clash of boxing titans? Or will
"The Raging Bull" trample our local hero and regain his lost glory?
For both fighers, it’s now or never.

My Life As A Minority

MY LIFE AS A MINORITY

OSU Sentinel
orage/paper1151/news/2008/01/23/Commentary/My.Life .As.A.Minority-3164715.shtml

OH

As someone with European pigmentation and facial structure, I have
always revered minority groups in America. The troubles they have
endured and still endure today signify their strength as a people.

And to be honest, I have always wanted to be at least part black or
Latino, but I was constrained to only imagine how great it must be
to feel myself as part of a larger, more important whole.

Lucky for me, in 2007 congress passed a resolution that condemned
the Armenian Genocide, the slaughter of roughly two-thirds of the
Armenian population by the Turks during the First World War. This came
as great news to me because I am fifty-percent Armenian; meaning, I was
no longer just another person, I was an oppressed minority. A calling
of such magnitude left me no choice but to live my life for my people.

I embarked on a crusade to raise the collective consciousness of our
downtrodden condition by placing an undue importance on the history of
the Armenian people, especially the Armenian Genocide. I even began
to flaunt my homeland’s ancient traditions, no matter how backward
they were. Animal sacrifice and speaking in tongues were good enough
for my ancestors, so they’re good enough for me.

To further strengthen my Armenian pride, I began to define myself not
only as an Armenian, but also in opposition to the Turkish people. It
felt great. I could now project my fears and insecurities onto others
so that I wouldn’t have to deal with them myself. For instance, I was
walking down the street when I passed a Turk walking in the opposite
direction, and I could just tell that he had it out for me. He was
just too Turkish with his nice suit and upright posture. There’s
no way he could understand the realness of my Armenian swagger. He
probably got all scared when he saw my t-shirt logo of a rising fist
surrounded by the outline of Armenia. Also, when I got fired from my
job for being lazy, I just blamed it on my Turkish boss who didn’t
get how we did things back in the Caucasus.

The best part is that everyone, the Turks included, gave me the
attention that I was after. This allowed me to further make demands,
act like a victim, and turn off my brain without yielding any negative
consequences. It made life easy like I always wanted it to be.

Even the few Turks that actually do still hate Armenians are a
blessing. Their belligerence only induces more sympathy for my crusade.

It has been many weeks now since I became a minority, and life still
keeps getting better. Before, existence was a constant struggle. I
always had a hard time deciding what to do for a living, and I never
could get a girlfriend. But now I just seek the guidance of my tribe.

I am happy to report that I am now dating a great Armenian girl I
met at the Armenian Orthodox Church where I am studying to become a
professor of Armenian-American studies.

To put the prunes on the mock paklava (thank you, Armenian cooking
class), my self-esteem has never been higher. Though to be honest,
it’s not exactly what I thought high self-esteem would feel like;
whatever, happiness and self-righteousness are probably the same thing.

But it was yesterday, while I was at the zoo, that I had an epiphany
which allowed me to understand the ultimate effect of defining myself
by my lineage.

As you may already know, a sign in front of each animal exhibit informs
the zoo’s patrons of the species, closest relatives, and country of
origin of the designated animal, which made me realize that humans
identify animals exactly as I now identify myself. We don’t learn
about an individual animal by inquiring into its thoughts, feelings,
and beliefs since it doesn’t have any. They are nothing over and
above their genetic makeup.

By identifying myself with my bloodline, I have become less of a
human being and more of an animal-quite possibly the most dignified
transformation one can undergo. After all, my psychology, and
environmental biology professors taught me that humans are the most
treacherous species on earth. I mean, it’s pretty much self-evident.

There is no need, however, to wait until you are an official minority
like I did. You can still renounce your ego, and surrender to a
group. Don’t surrender to just any group for even this entails a
decision. Rather, open yourself up to the wisdom of our animal brethren
and herd with people who look like you, the group into which you were
born. The responsibility of consciousness is a dangerous burden that
none should bear.

Pamuk To Face The Nation, Decides Top Appeals Court

PAMUK TO FACE THE NATION, DECIDES TOP APPEALS COURT

armradio.am
24.01.2008 13:26

The country’s top appeals court decided Tuesday that six people who
filed a complaint against novelist Orhan Pamuk had a case because
the author had made statements against the whole nation, the Turkish
Daily News reports.

Nobel laureate novelist Pamuk, in an interview with a Swiss magazine,
had said: "We killed a million Armenians and 30,000 Kurds. No one
in Turkey has the courage to say this. I do." Charges were brought
against Pamuk for insulting Turkishness based on the controversial
Article 301 of the penal code for his statement, but an Istanbul court
had dropped the case because of the Interior Ministry’s failure to
approve of the trial.

Afterward, six people filed a complaint against Pamuk, accusing him
of condemning the whole nation with his statements, and demanded
compensation.

An Istanbul court had rejected the complaint, arguing that those who
lodged the complaint could not represent the entire nation.

The court decision went to the Supreme Court of Appeals, which annulled
the court decision. The appeals court said: "The judiciary decides
the limits of individual rights that include physical, emotional and
social values, occupational pride, honor, freedom, spiritual rights,
health and citizenship. When assessed from this angle, citizenship is
seen as a right that must be protected and the statement directed at
the whole nation gives individuals the right to file such complaints."

The decision allows every Turkish citizen to file complaints against
individuals who make statements they deem insulting to the nation.
