Public Transport Fare May Remain Unchanged In Armenia

PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARE MAY REMAIN UNCHANGED IN ARMENIA

ARKA
May 19, 2008

YEREVAN, May 19. /ARKA/. Public transport fare may remain unchanged
in Armenia, said Armenian Minister of Transport and Communication
Gurgen Sargsian. After the working group set up to conduct respective
studies completes its work, a decision will be made whether to raise
the price or not, the Minister said.

The first tide of rumors on fare rise occurred after the increase in
gas prices at some gas-filling stations, Sargsian said. He reported
that after the respective study, prices at the gas stations were
somehow reviewed.

"No rise has been recorded in prices for inter-city transport; some
organizations raised the prices without permission. The transport
department is carrying out a respective inspection now," the Minister
said.

Recently some transport organizations submitted applications to the
government for raising the public transport fare in Yerevan as they
cannot meet the transportation prime cost under the current fare and
the increased gas prices.

The current passenger fare for buses and minivans is 100drams and
the fare for trolleybus is 50drams in Yerevan. ($1=307.58drams).

Garoyian: It Takes Two To Tango

GAROYIAN: IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO

Athens News Agency
May 13, 2008

Athens News Agency – Tuesday 13 May – "It takes two to tango, and up
to now Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has been dancing alone,"
visiting Cyprus House of Representatives president Marios Garoyian
said in Athens on Monday, speaking to reporters after being received
by President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias.

Garoyian, accompanied by Greek parliament president Dimitris Sioufas,
said he conveyed to Papoulias the "greetings, love and respect"
of President Christofias.

The Cyprus parliament leader also said he had noted to Papoulias that
Christofias "has taken initiatives in the right direction, which has
been appreciated by the international community".

However, he added, "there is also the factor of the standing Turkish
intransigence".

"President Christofias has the political volition, and is trying
to overcome the impasse. But it takes two to tango, and President
Christofias is dancing alone," Garoyian stressed.

On Christofias’ upcoming new meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader
Mehmet Ali Talat, Garoyian said it had to do with the fact that the
"working groups have not produced tangible results", and consequently
"the two leaders will meet to see where this process is stumbling".

ADC Envisages Provision Of Broadband Internet Services To Households

ADC ENVISAGES PROVISION OF BROADBAND INTERNET SERVICES TO HOUSEHOLDS AND SMALL OFFICES FROM JUNE

Noyan Tapan

Ma y 12, 2008

YEREVAN, MAY 12, NOYAN TAPAN. Armenian-Norwegian ADC company plans
to start the provision of broadband Internet "triple play" package
of services through its channels to both households and small offices
from June, NT correspondent was informed by the company’s commercial
director Avetik Kalantarian.

In his words, the first stage of services’ testing was successful. "We
have developed interesting versions with quite a good result – in terms
of ensuring "last mile" connections to apartments and offices in order
to make the prices more accessible as compared with the fiber optic
cable connection which is more labor-consuming and quite expensive,"
A. Kalantarian pointed out. He explained that two tariff plans on
provision of the indicated services have been developed: with and
without a restriction on the amount of data transmission. Users will
be offered 5-6 various packages at prices from 15 to 40 thousand
drams a month. They will differ from broadband Internet offered to
big corporate customers in that the indices of upload and download
speed will not be given.

"We want all packages to be without a use restriction because we
realize that by pursuing some bisiness goals, we also solve the
problem of forming an information society," A. Kalantarian added.

He said that only a few Armenian television companies have the
opportunity to broadcast digital signals to the network operator. Most
TV companies use analog television broadcasting, and they can
broadcast by the fiber optic network only after their programs are
digitalized. In the words of A. Kalantarian, "TV companies will not
have to make considerable investments for digitalization. If we have
to digitalize, it is another business task, and we are prepared to
discuss it".
