Turkish press: Historic Bulgarian church in Istanbul to reopen on Jan 7 after seven-year restoration
- 13:34:22
A 120-year-old Bulgarian Orthodox Church in Istanbul is set to reopen on Jan. 7 following extensive renovation works.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov are expected to attend the opening ceremony at the St. Stephen Church, located on the shore of the city’s Golden Horn in the historic Balat neighborhood.
The reponening follows major seven-year restoration works at the distinctive “iron church,” co-funded by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in association with the Bulgarian authorities.
The original 19th-century wooden church burned down and was rebuilt in 1898 from prefabricated cast iron materials.
The authorities in Turkey say a total of 14 churches and one temple were restored across the country from 2003 to 2017.
The restored worship places included the Great Synagogue in the northwestern province of Edirne, the Aya Nikola Church on the Gökçeada island off the northwestern province of Çanakkale, a Syriac Catholic church in the İskenderun district of the southern province of Hatay, an Armenian Protestant church in the Sur district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır, the Fevkani Church in the Nizip district of the southeastern province of Gaziantep, the Taksiyarhis (Ayanikola) Church on the Cunda island off the northwestern province of Balıkesir, and in Istanbul the Edirnekapı Hagia Yorgi Church and St. Stephen Church.
Azerbaijani Press: Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: New Year brings new hopes
Alas, separatism was top on political agenda of 2017, keeping tension high in several points of the Earth. The developments in Spanish Catalonia and Iraqi Kurdistan represented a serious headache for the international community in 2017. That anew reminded many leaders about the protracted conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh in the South Caucasus, left out of attention for over two decades.
Many people around the world are not properly aware of this region perhaps, but since late 1980s it has been the place of a constant confrontation of two neighboring countries – Armenia and Azerbaijan – due to the Armenian separatism in Azerbaijani lands.
The war between the countries, that flared up in 1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan, took thousands of lives and was stopped only in 1994 through signing a ceasefire agreement, which is, however, being broken by Armenia every day. Armenia had occupied 20 percent of internationally recognized lands of Azerbaijan, and more than a million of Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons because of the Armenian aggression.
Unfortunately, these lands – Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven adjacent regions – are still under Armenian occupation, and no effective way has been found so far to resolve this Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict peacefully. In defiance of the norms and rules of international law, Armenia rejects implementing four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Azerbaijani territories.
The past year, as well as many previous years, contained several meetings between the conflicting parties under the auspices of the mediating countries. Although the number of meetings held this year was higher than those held previous years, no tangible result has been achieved to push forward the peace diplomacy over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
During 2017, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov and Armenia Edward Nalbandian met in February, April, July, September and December and the presidents of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Armenia Serzh Sargsyan met in Geneva in October. All the meetings were held under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is designed to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. However, due to the unconstructive position of Armenia on the issue, its reluctance to engage in constructive talks, the meetings can barely be called fruitful. After decades of the conflict existence, the Armenian government still continues to play for time and avoids substantive negotiations with the aim to preserve the inadmissible status quo in Nagorno-Karabakh.
This, naturally, does not satisfy Azerbaijan, which, by the way, is ready to provide its Nagorno-Karabakh region with the highest level of autonomy within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. However, even this concession of Azerbaijan does not make the Armenian authorities join serious and constructive talks on the conflict resolution. This demonstrates the genuine desire of Yerevan that implies maintaining the conflict forever by remaining in Azerbaijani lands.
Despite all difficulties, Azerbaijan and international mediators still maintain a positive attitude on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In his recent interview, the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the South Caucasus Gunther Bachler called the October meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents important and to some extent encouraging. He stressed that for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict there are some principles about final status on the table, but no real negotiation architecture.
Also, the next meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers is set for mid-January. This means that the foreign intermediaries – Russia, the U.S. and France – are not going to waste time in the conflict settlement process, and this, of course, is worth welcoming. The major problem is to make Armenia join substantive and constructive negotiations too.

In Geogria, Sarkisian Advances Regional Cooperation
TBILISI—President Serzh Sarkisian on Tuesday traveled to neighboring Georgia, where he touched on security concerns in the region and how advanced Armenia-Georgia cooperation can further enhance the two countries’ ability to address those international challenges.
During a meeting held at the Presidential Palace of Georgia, the Presidents of Georgia and Armenia discussed bilateral political cooperation and deepening relations and reiterated the importance of Serzh Sarkisian’s visit as a proof of the high level of bilateral political relations.
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said his country welcomed the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the European Union, saying that Georgia sees the agreement as a positive message from the EU and an as impetus for new opportunities for mutual cooperation.
During a press conference following the meeting, the two leaders spoke about some of the highlights of their conversation, both emphasizing the need to advance neighborly relations, with Sarkisian saying that “a number of promising projects” would allow for such a development.
“The Armenian-Georgian relations have been developing in the course of a quarter of a century on the basis of rich cultural traditions, interrelated history and a common value system,” said Sarkisian.
“Georgia is particularly attractive to Armenians, as we have true friendly sentiments toward the Georgian people. It’s no coincidence that most Armenians prefer to spend their vacation in Georgia,” added Sarkisian.
The sides also reportedly discussed the implementation of programs in IT sector, creation of joint industrial enterprises. Sarkisain said he briefed his Georgian counterpart on the opportunities created by Armenia’s free trade zones as an access to the Eurasian Economic Union markets. He made a special reference to the newly launched free economic zone on the Iranian border, which will enable Georgians to export their goods and services to the Iran.
The Presidents of the two countries also referred to issues of regional security and stability. “In this context we attached importance to maintaining a balanced and constructive stance on sensitive issues. We share the opinion that a comprehensive and long-term settlement of existing conflicts is possible exceptionally in a peaceful way within the framework of agreed formats and through negotiations,” Sarkisian told reporters.
While in Tbilisi, Sarkisian also visited Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, Georgia’s pontiff and congratulated on his 40-year leadership of the church.
The parties attached importance to the role of the Armenian Apostolic and the Georgian Orthodox Churches in the development of good-neighborly relations between the two countries.
Accompanied by first lady Rita Sarkisian, the president visited the Hovhannes Tumanian House Museum and Cultural Center.
Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan, Primate of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and Director of the Tounamian Center Gissane Hovsepyan led a tour of the facility and updated the president and the first lady on the recently-completed renovations, as well as efforts to engage the Armenian community of Georgia in the center’s activities.
After watching a film about the center’s history and ongoing activities, the Sarkisian were taken to the house’s southern balcony where Tumanian used to receive guests. The tour continued with a visit to the author’s private library and a traditional tea party, that is said to have been a mainstay of the Tumanian House.

Germany aware of Turkey’s attacks being planned against Turkish-Armenians living in Europe
Armenpress News Agency , Armenia Friday Germany aware of Turkey's attacks being planned against Turkish-Armenians living in Europe YEREVAN, DECEMBER 22, ARMENPRESS. The German law enforcement agencies have announced that they are aware of the statement issued by ethnic Armenian lawmaker of the Turkish parliament Garo Paylan according to which assassination attempts are being planned against Turkish-Armenians and Turkish-Alevis living in several European countries, in particular in Germany, Deutsche Welle reports. The law enforcement agencies said they are observing the reports on possible attacks. “We are aware of the aforementioned danger, we carefully observe the situation. But we cannot provide further details on the situation and defense measures”, the statement says. This manhunt which exists today must be ruled out- Serzh Sargsyan
President Serzh Sargsyan has presented his vision regarding the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
In an interview with ARMENIA TV, the president stressed that there must be calm in the line of contact. Causalities must be ruled out.
“This manhunt which exists today must be ruled out. It will create certain atmosphere and mutual trust. Where does mutual trust come from? Mutual trust comes when you begin implementing the agreements which you achieved recently. If you fail to implement the agreements once, the worm of distrust begins to gnaw. One after one and this is how an atmosphere of distrust appears. This must be eliminated, so that after this the negotiations continue in a calm atmosphere”, he said.
The president mentioned that at this moment negotiations over specific points of settlement are not proceeding, however he mentioned that this is natural – taking into account the developments of the past two years. “During the last two years we had meetings in Vienna, St. Petersburg, we’ve had agreements, and now one can say the process is proceeding in two directions. The first direction is that the tension must be eased, investigative mechanisms must be created, which will bring to a certain atmosphere of mutual trust, and after which it will be possible to go deeper over the provisions of the document. I’ve said this once, and I will repeat it again – it is impossible to negotiate with one hand and shoot with the other. Negotiations don’t like gunfire. And it is impossible to achieve agreement in this kind of conditions. Gunfire always disturb, human losses are always painful and bring a nervous atmosphere in the negotiations process. Each word, each provision must be weighed in a calm atmosphere, in order to be able to reach agreement”, the Armenian President said.
The president also mentioned that Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov did not present any conceptual or new proposal regarding the NK conflict settlement during his latest regional visit. According to the president, the Armenian-Russian relations agenda is so rich that solely the NK issue is not discussed during the visits of high level officials.
“In terms of Karabakh, I say again, Lavrov said everything at the press conference. The Russian FM is convinced that this conflict is possible to be settled within the OSCE Minsk Group and the proposed principles are the ones which enable to solve the conflict”, he said.
Iran determined to resolve Karabakh crisis
TEHRAN, Dec. 11 (MNA) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani told the visiting Armenian MP Vahram Baghdasaryan in Tehran on Monday that Iran is resolute to solve the problem of Karabakh.
“Iran will spare no efforts to resolve the Karabakh crisis and we hope the issue be resolved very soon with peace and friendship,” said Ali Larijani, the Speaker of Iranian Parliament on Monday.
The top law-maker made the remarks during his meeting with Vahram Baghdasaryan, an MP from the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, also referred to as the Parliament of Armenia, who also heads the Parliamentary Friendship Group of Armenia-Iran.
