Armavia is keeping down air ticket prices

2008-02-07 20:35:00

ArmInfo. The national air carrier of Armenia, Armavia, is going to curb
the growth in air ticket prices, the owner of the company, the
president of MIKA Armenia Trading Mikhail Bagdassarov has told ArmInfo.

In order to avoid losses the company is reducing its costs and has
staretd to apply the three-stage price policy of European company: air
ticket bought a month before flight is $150 cheaper than ticket bought
a few days before.

As regards the high prices for flights to Russia, Bagdassarov said that
they were equivalent to the tariffs of Russian companies. The prices of
flights on planes like Airbus are the same as in Europe: 2,800 EUR for
business class and 500 EUR for economy class.

Even though the fuel prices are growing, Bagdassarov is not going to
raise ticket prices. At the same time, some other air companies are
insisting on raising prices as the cost of air tickets keeps growing
and they are sustaining losses. "Everything is getting expensive: fuel,
metal and, consequently, planes," Bagdassarov said.

Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, will participate in the Ministerial EU
Troika visit to Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia on 4-6 February 2008.

Together with Dimitrij Rupel, Minister for Foreign Affairs of
Slovenia and EU Special Representative for the Southern Caucasus,
Ambassador Peter Semneby, the Commissioner will be holding meetings
at the highest level. On the agenda are the implementation of the
ENP Action Plans, regional and international issues. In Armenia and
Azerbaijan the Commissioner will also open full fledged European
Commission Delegations.

On the eve of her visit, Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner said: "Over
a year after we embarked into our joint Action Plans, the relations
between the EU and the countries of the Southern Caucasus are growing
ever closer. This is my third visit to the region, and I am looking
forward to discussing the implementation of our ENP Action plans,
energy security, regional issues including the frozen conflicts,
as well as international issues. "

She added: "This time I am particularly happy to open fully-fledged
EC Commission Delegations in Armenia and Azerbaijan. This opens a new
chapter in our relations with these countries. It is a confirmation
of the Commission’s commitment to cooperate closely with the South
Caucasus countries, supporting reforms with a view to bringing the
whole region closer to Europe".

The EU Troika visit will provide the opportunity to discuss a wide
range of topics with Armenian, Azerbaijani and Georgian authorities,
such as the implementation of the three ENP Action Plans, the situation
of human rights, fundamental freedoms and democratisation, frozen
conflicts, regional cooperation in the Southern Caucasus and energy.

The European Commission contributes to the peaceful settlement of
frozen conflicts. The EU is already active in preventing and resolving
conflicts. The Commission can make an important contribution by
working around the conflict issues, promoting similar reforms on
both sides of the boundary lines, to foster convergence between
political, economic and legal systems, enabling greater social
inclusion and contributing to confidence building and the financing
of rehabilitation programmes. The EU is also institutionally involved
in conflict settlement mechanisms. The Commission is also an observer
to the Joint Control Commission, a conflict settlement mechanism for
South Ossetia. However, only individual Member States participate
in the Minsk Group (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the UN Friends of Georgia
(Abkhazia) peace mechanisms.

in late 2006. Implementation is supported by the European Community
bilateral ENPI assistance to the tune of EUR 92 million in Azerbaijan,
EUR 98, 4 million in Armenia and EUR 120 million in Georgia over
the period 2007-2010, plus assistance initiatives implemented in the
context of ENPI Regional and Inter-Regional and EC Thematic Programmes
such as the European Instrument for Democratisation and Human Rights
– EIDHR.

The main focus of cooperation with Azerbaijan is good governance,
socio-economic reforms and energy.

For Armenia the three focal areas of bilateral assistance are support
for strengthening of democratic structures, and good governance,
support for regulatory reform and administrative capacity building,
and support for poverty reduction efforts.

For Georgia the focus is support for democratic development, rule of
law and governance, economic development and implementation of the ENP

Armenia

YEREVAN, February 4. /ARKA/. Central Bank of Armenia decided Monday
to drive refinancing rate 0.25 percentage points up to annual 6%,
the CBA press office reports.

The report says that the bank board’s members are united in thinking
that high inflation rate create adverse environment for weakening

At the same time, developments inside the country will heavily
depend on high pace of individual consumption growth and the taxation
budgetary policy to be widened in 2008.

The CBA board members expect the outside inflation pressure to go on
throughout this year. They think it will be possible to curb inflation
and mitigate inflation pressure only by tightening monetary conditions.

2.4% inflation was recorded in Armenia in January 2008, compared with
the previous year’s December, and 6.6%, compared with January 2007.

In the state budget, inflation is planned to be 4% (+- 1.5%) by
late 2008.

NUP sure LTP participation in elections `Project of the authorities’

NUP sure that the participation of Levon Ter-Petrosian in presidential
elections is the `Project of the Armenian authorities’

February 1, 2008

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Levon Ter-Petrosian very well knows that he will
not be elected President, however he strives to establish an atmosphere
of instability in the country, Deputy Chairman of `National
Unification’ Party (NUP), Head of the Yerevan pre-election headquarter
of Artashes Geghamian Sargis Muradian stated today.

Mediamax reports that, speaking at a news conference today, Sargis
Muradian stated that the participation of Levon Ter-Petrosian in the
presidential elections `is the project of the authorities of Armenia,
who very well realize how vulnerable the Ex-President is’.

`The people have not yet forgotten what was going on in Armenia in the
years of the Ex-President’s rule. Thus, gambling on the figure of
Ter-Petrosian, the authorities strengthen their positions’, Sargis
Muradian stated.

According to him, the artificial separation of the people into two
enemy camps may lead to bloodshed and is pregnant with danger for the
future of Armenia.

Armenian Ombudsman Urges Electors To Defend Their Votes

ARMENIAN OMBUDSMAN URGES ELECTORS TO DEFEND THEIR VOTES

Noyan Tapan
Feb 1, 2008

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 1, NOYAN TAPAN. The Ombudsman of the RA Armen
Harutyunian called on voters to display tolerance during the election
campaign of the presidential elections. "Bright future of the country
cannot be built on intolerance," he stated at the February 1 meeting
with reporters.

He urged electors to defend their votes, their right to vote: only
in this case all the other rights will be guaranteed. For this reason
A. Harutyunian attached great importance to the fight against election
rigging, in particular, electoral bribes. "If elections are based
on bribes rather than ideas, we will have a system, in which it is
senseless to speak about human rights. The political force that buys
votes will not have any moral obligation to the people, it will not
be interested in improving the socioeconomic conditions – so that it
will always be able to buy votes – and it will never promote civil
freedoms," the ombudsman stated.

A. Harutyunian informed reporters that a hot line was set up in the RA
Ombudsman Office: voters, empowered persons, observers, other persons
involved in electoral process can phone by city phone numbers 537651,
539271, 538831, 538577 and by mobile numbers 091.008817 and 091.280206,
as well as contact by email: [email protected] – and express their
complaints about human rights abuses in electoral process. He also
announced that there will be persons on duty in the RA Ombudsman
Office from 7 a.m. of February 19 to 9 a.m. of February 20.

The ombudsman said that the fast response group of the RA Ombudsman
Office will go to Talin to examine the case of beating a citizen
during a pre-election meeting of the presidential candidate Levon
Ter-Petrosian. The public will be informed about results. The ombudsman
plans to meet again with mass media representatives in a week and to
respond to their questions.
