/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The negotiations between Yerevan and Ankara
proved that Armenia is a civilized state while Turkey is guided by
Pan-Turkism ideology, said Hamlet Harutyunyan, parliamentarian from
Republican group.

"During political discussions with Armenia, Turkey showed international
community that it pursues 7th century mentality in the present-day
world," he told a joint news conference with New Times party leader
Aram Karapetyan.

Disagreeing with the above-statement, Mr. Karapetyan said, "Civilized
countries hold elections in a civilized manner."

Nikol Pashinyan’s Lawyers Unable To Get In Contact With Him

NIKOL PASHINYAN’S LAWYERS UNABLE TO GET IN CONTACT WITH HIM

According to news from Nikol Pashinyan’s elections headquarters,
Pashinyan has been moved to Nubarashen isolation ward, which supporters
consider to be a tactic used by authorities to hinder the process
of submitting the complaint appeal with respect to the parliamentary
elections to the Constitutional Court.

"The process of appealing the results of the January 10 elections in
the No. 10 electoral district has come face-to-face with a premeditated
obstacle organized by the administration. Today, January 21, is the
deadline for submitting the documents to the Constitutional Court,
and Nikol Pashinyan’s attorneys, all day today, haven’t been able
to find out where he’s being held, in order to sign the necessary
documents. At [one of the city’s other] isolation wards, they said
that Nikol Pashinyan had been taken to Nubarashen isolation ward,
for which there are no grounds."

Nikol Pashinyan’s campaign supporters are calling for Pashinyan’s
attorneys to meet with their client immediately and get the necessary
documents signed, since the issue has to be resolved before end of
day today.

ST. CATHERINES, Ontario-The images of the disaster in Haiti are
being broadcast to all corners of the world, and folks of all ages
are worried, concerned, and saddened by the events unfolding after
last week’s 7.0 earthquake.

One of those watching the images was 11-year-old Armand Istanboulian,
a sixth grader whose family attends the St. Paul Armenian Church in
St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

Armand began asking a lot of questions about the images, especially
those of the children trapped in rubble or going without food and
water.

"He was trying to comprehend the loss of lives," says Armand’s mother
Patty. "He was asking a lot of questions, and we talked about a way
that we could help and remembered that a couple of years ago sister
Natalie did a fundraiser for cancer research."

Armand and his sister Natalie had set up a Kool-Aid stand a few years
ago with their father Vicken (an AYF Alumnus) and mother Patty to
raise funds for cancer research. But since it’s extremely cold in St.

Catherines, which is near Niagara Falls, Armand thought a hot chocolate
stand would be a better option instead of Kool-Aid.

"Armand and his friends had been talking about the earthquake, so
he thought it would be a good idea to have them join in and within
a couple of days the event was organized," says Patty.

Armand and his friends met on the Friday following the Haiti
Earthquake, January 15, made posters and flyers, decided on what
price to charge for the hot chocolate and baked goods.

On Saturday morning, the 11-year-olds handed out flyers to neighbors,
and on Saturday afternoon these young activists held their fundraiser
between two and four in the afternoon.

"The response was amazing," says Patty. "Almost everyone who stopped
by gave an additional donation. That day they raised $306.29, and
since then have raised an additional $55 from friends and family who
were unable to come by on Saturday."

The young activists will be taking the money to the Canadian Red
Cross office this Friday, January 22.

REGIONAL APPROACHES WILL BOOST SECURITY IN CAUCASUS: IRANIAN FM

Tehran Times

Iran

TEHRAN – Former Armenian president Robert Kocharyan met with Iranian
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Wednesday to exchange views
over regional and bilateral ties.

The senior Iranian diplomat described the Iran-Armenia relation as
"long-standing" and underscored the necessity to maintain calm in
the Caucasus region.

"Security and stability in the Caucasus should be consolidated by
regional approaches," he said.

Commenting on the current economic crisis facing the world, he said
these problems have stemmed from the corrupt system ruling the world
which was established after the Second World War.

Robert Kocharyan, for his part, said Armenia is determined to expand
bilateral cooperation with Iran.

He also highlighted the efficiency of regional approaches in
promoting regional security and economic development, saying the
foreign powers’ prescriptions for resolving crises in the Caucasus
region is destructive.

Armenian Opposition Editor Jailed Over 2008 Clashes

ARMENIAN OPPOSITION EDITOR JAILED OVER 2008 CLASHES

Jan 19 2010

YEREVAN, Jan 19 (Reuters) – The editor of an Armenian opposition
newspaper was sentenced to seven years in jail on Tuesday over deadly
clashes between police and protesters in March 2008 after the election
of President Serzh Sarksyan.

Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Times) editor Nikol Pashinyan was
acquitted of using violence against a police officer but found guilty
of inciting mass disorder. His defence lawyer said he would appeal
against the verdict.

Eight protesters and two police officers died when opposition
demonstrators and police clashed in the former Soviet republic
after Sarksyan defeated opposition presidential challenger Levon
Ter-Petrosyan.

Pashinyan fled but later came out of hiding when authorities announced
an amnesty for those who would be sentenced to up to five years
in jail.

Some 100 people were arrested during a state of emergency after the
violence, in which authorities accused the opposition of trying to
overthrow the government.

Rights groups and the Armenian opposition accuse Sarksyan’s government
of pursuing politically motivated trials over the unrest and failing
to investigate accusations that the police used excessive force.

The government denies the accusations, and has pardoned a number of
senior opposition figures. (Reporting by Hasmik Lazarian; Writing

SMITHFIELD State Labor MP Ninos Khoshaba will lobby his government
to formally recognise the genocide of the Assyrian people.

Mr Khoshaba said he would move that the State Government condemn the
genocide when parliament resumed next month.

"This motion is about recognising those men, women and children who
lost their lives during the genocide," he said.

"I believe it is important to remember such events in order to ensure
such crimes against humanity are not repeated."

The Assyrian genocide has become a talking point since Fairfield
Council approved a monument honouring its victims in Bonnyrigg
last year.

Mr Khoshaba’s father, deputy mayor Anwar Khoshaba, was instrumental
in having the monument approved. Like the plaque on the monument,
Mr Khoshaba’s motion will make no reference to the turkish people,
who are accused of the genocide.

When the State Government recognised the Armenian genocide in 1997,
the Ottoman Government was listed as the group responsible for the
slaughter.

"I decided to move the motion after receiving several representations
from local residents and community groups in my electorate," Mr
Khoshaba said.

The motion will come before parliament on Tuesday, February 23.

BAKU: Leading countries not interested in NK conflict settlement

Leading countries not interested in Karabakh conflict settlement
Fri 15 January 2010 | 13:43 GMT Text size:

Organization for Karabakh Liberation The Azerbaijani lands occupied by
Armenians can be returned only through war, said Akif Naghi, head of
the Organization for Karabakh Liberation.

"The only way to liberate the occupied lands is a way of war", Naghi
said at the Forum of Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs held in Baku
Friday.

According to him, superpowers are not interested in settling the
Karabakh conflict and they merely use it in a geopolitical fight in
the region and all the initiatives they declare on the peaceful
settlement of the Karabakh conflict are, in fact, targeting the
Azerbaijani interests. Meanwhile, he noted that the United States
regularly allocates money to the separatist regime of Karabakh.

"No country will decide anything for us. This problem can be settled
only by Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani army", he said.

The forum is aimed at informing the world community about the
occupation of the Azerbaijani lands. The initiative to send documents
on Armenian aggression to the European Court of Human Rights
collectively has been voiced during the event.
