Black Easter: On this day Ottoman Turks Begins Genocide on Thracian Greeks

April 6 is a painful day for every Greek as it marks the beginning of the Thracian Greek genocide by the Ottoman Empire. It was Monday after Easter in 1914, now known as “Black Easter,” when the systematic extermination of the Greeks and their expulsion from the region of Eastern Thrace, that is now a part of Turkey, began.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Greeks in Eastern Thrace accounted for approximately 250,000 people. However, when the Ottoman Turks unleashed their genocide, many Greeks from Eastern Thrace were exiled to Greece and 100,000 transferred to Anatolia. About only half of those transferred to the interior of the Ottoman Empire were eventually transported to Greece, and the rest either killed or Turkified.

As recorded by the Greek Genocide Resource Center, Aspasia Constantinides an eye-witness to the deportation, recounted:

After a two hour march, we reached a deep and narrow ravine where we found Corporal Ismail with a number of immigrants, apparently waiting for us. As soon as he saw us, he ordered our drivers to stop, and dragging the women out of the carts and beat them savagely. They snatched the earrings the women wore and in so doing cut their ears; they forced them to undress in order to get at the necklaces they wore, and often tore them off their necks with such violence that in one instance a woman’s throat was cut, causing the blood to flow in torrents.

A report by the Consular Agent in Kirklareli on April 23, 1914, stated that the hodjas (Muslim schoolmasters) in local mosques were inciting hatred of Christians and Greeks, and officials were arming local Turks with army rifles to commit crimes.

he slaughter ended on October 11, 1922 when the Greeks of Eastern Thrace who refused to be Turkified were given 15 days to leave their ancestral homes of thousands of years following the signing of the armistice at Mudanya at the end of the Greco-Turkish War.

In speaking with Greek City Times, historian Marios Mathios-Josefidis, explained how Eastern Thrace came into Turkish hands.

“One of the less known facts about Eastern Thrace is that Turkey annexed it without even one shot fired. The Greek government and Eleftherios Venizelos following the Asia Minor Catastrophe had to repel claims from Turkey that demanded Greece to pay war reparations,” Mathios-Josefidis explained.

“Facing a big financial problem because of the arrival of the Greek refugees from Minor Asia and a society that was tired after 10 years of conflict – The Balkan Wars, First World War and the Asia Minor Campaign – Greece stepped back and decided to offer Eastern Thrace to the Turks as war reparation,” he continued.

The historian then explains that the mass slaughter of Greeks in Eastern Thrace could have taken a very different course of events.

“Was it a necessary move?” he questions. “As a historian, I do not have the right to make conclusions of ‘what if,’ but having knowledge of the situations during this period, sure I can tell that it was a hurried decision. The Greek Army in Thrace Army was very strong and capable of repelling any attack from the Turks. But the most important factor was that the Turks had to travel by sea [to reach Thrace] as Constantinople was under British control. The problem for the Turks was that they did not have a Navy to do this,” Mathios-Josefidis said.

“On the other hand, the Greek Royal Navy was strong and experienced. Somebody can claim that the Great Powers forced us to give this historical province to the Turks. History has proven to us many times that nations that want to be pressed, finally press because of other powers, and I mean this especially for leaderships. Unfortunately, our leadership at this time was not as decided as it had to be,” concluded the historian.

Asbarez: Fix It. Fess Up.

March 27, 2020

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

A few months ago, Asbarez reported this tidbit of laughter, or more accurately, guffaw-inducing Ankara inanity.

It seems Turkey’s High Advisory Board is worried that the Armenian Genocide “issue” is hindering people’s “harmonious” life in that country. I’m somewhat befuddled by what’s harmonious about life in Turkey. Ignoring, denying, or covering-up of most of its history? Jailing journalists and otherwise muzzling the media? Persecuting Kurds, Alevis, and other minorities? Forcibly Turkifying not just Christian nations living within its borders but also the numerous Moslem nationalities? Repressing labor unions? Stomping on civil and human rights? Picking fights with its neighbors thus making its own citizens’ lives less secure?

Then we have a more specific attribution, to Fahrettin Altoon, evidently deemed Turkey’s #2 person, after the wanna-be-Sultan (that’s President Erdoğan for thise who have been asleep for the last two decades). This gent said of the Armenian Genocide that some people “use the issue in a bid to damage the harmony of the Turkish people.” Evidently, the topic was on the agenda of the High Advisory Board. In a perverse way, I suppose that’s a good thing. And if the members of this body had any wisdom among them, they’d see the best and easiest solution to the problem, fess up! Admit to Turkey’s culpability for the Genocide.

Let me spell it out for them: If there’s no denial, then Turks of good conscience would not be cast into the artificial role of harmony-busters. Everyone (except, inevitably, some die-hard Pan-Turkists) would be on the same page. Bingo! Disharmony=GONE!

But that may be what the fuss is all about. Given the existence of Article 301 of the Turkish penal code that outlaws “insulting the Turkish nation” (whatever THAT really means), this may be the beginning of a drive to shut people up regarding the Genocide. It’s not hard to imagine a forced/tortured/corrupt link being made between causing “disharmony” and “insulting the Turkish nation”.

But really, fellas (yes, they’re all men, check out the picture here) everything would be much simpler, your lives, Armenians’ lives, your government’s activities, and everyone else’s, too, if you would just man-up an accept responsibility so we can move on to more important issues, like reparations and the Armenian irredenta.

Please, help Turkey’s president’s august advisors see the light of day on this matter. Write them, enlighten the, have some fun with them on this one explaining how foolish, ludicrous, and ridiculous they appear when they go through these contortions to avoid telling the truth.

PACE Rapporteurs outraged by the Azerbaijani government’s reliance on the coronavirus pandemic to justify political repression

Panorama, Armenia

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) rapporteurs Sunna Ævarsdottir Sir Roger Gale and Stefan Schennach reacted on Thursday to reports that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in his speech to mark the Nowruz holiday, had proposed the “isolation” of the country’s political opposition as a response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am astonished and appalled by the Azerbaijani government’s shameful exploitation of the coronavirus pandemic to launch yet another crack-down on the country’s beleaguered political opposition”, said Sir Roger Gale, as quoted by the PACE press service. “It beggars belief that any head of state would abuse a public health emergency in order to tighten his grip on power.”

“The language used by President Aliyev to describe his country’s legitimate political opposition as a traitorous ‘fifth column’ is profoundly undemocratic”, said Mr Schennach. “It is precisely in times of public emergency that political pluralism and responsibly exercised freedom of _expression_ are most important, so as to allow open debate on policy and the free flow of information amongst the public.”

In response to the reported arrest and detention for ‘hooliganism’ of leading opposition politician Tofig Yagublu, Ms Ævarsdottir said that “everything I have heard so far suggests that the case against Mr Yagublu has been fabricated and he has once again been made a political prisoner. It looks very much as though the Azerbaijani government is launching yet another round of concerted political repression. This would not bode well for the country’s future standing in the Council of Europe.”

While distributing booklets about protection from the coronavirus in Yerevan, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan’s wife, Anna Hakobyan urged a citizen to follow the rules for protection from the coronavirus, in response to which the citizen told her that she does follow the rules and asked why Anna Hakobyan wasn’t wearing a face mask.

In response, Anna Hakobyan said there would be a conversation about this.

Anna Hakobyan also entered a pharmacy and produce stores to distribute booklets.

She also gave a booklet to a store clerk who told her that there is no trade, and in response, Anna Hakobyan said in this situation, no matter how strange it sounds, it’s good that there are no customers.
