Armenian violin virtuoso’s concert cancelled in Turkey

MEDYA NEWS

Spanish citizen Armenian violin virtuoso Ara Malikian’s concert, which was scheduled to be held on 11 June in Turkey’s capital Ankara was cancelled without any explanation.

The concert would be part of a festival to be organised by the Turkish ministry of culture and tourism.

Those who bought tickets for the Ara Malikian concert were informed of the cancellation by e-mail messages.

In Turkey, there has recently been a series of cancellations of music events, and while no explanation has been indicated by the authorities in many cases, there have been only vague explanations in some.

Kurdish musician Aynur Doğan’s concerts in two western cities were earlier cancelled; the one scheduled for 20 May by a local council, and the more recent one reportedly by the company that would be organising the concert.

In Eskişehir, another Western city, a music festival was banned by the city governorate on 10 May. A certain ‘Eskişehir Brotherhood Platform’, a conservative group claimed to have ties to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), voiced support for the governerate’s ban.

A concert of musician siblings Metin and Kemal Kahraman in the Kurdish-majority city of Muş (Mûş) was cancelled on 16 May by the city governerate.

Musician Niyazi Koyuncu announced that a district municipal council in Istanbul cancelled his concert to be held on 25 May.

Apolas Lermi, who sings almost forgotten Pontic Greek songs, was targeted by a government media columnist who said that Lermi voiced support for the recognisiton of the Pontus Genocide*, Lermi’s two successive concerts were subsequently cancelled on 23 May.

Musician Melek Mosso’s concert, scheduled for 3 June, was cancelled on 26 May by the municipal council in the city of Isparta after she was targeted by conservative groups.

Kurdish musician Mem Ararat’s concert in the western city of Bursa was cancelled for ‘public safety’ reasons.

* Pontus genocide was part of the Greek Genocide that was committed between 1913-22 in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic. It began with the defeat and land losses of the Ottoman Empire in the 1st Balkan War. wiping out the entire Greek population in Anatolia and Thrace except for a small community in Istanbul. Pontic Greeks had been a people with a presence in the region of Pontus, on the shores of the Black Sea and in the Pontic Mountains of northeastern Anatolia, since at least 700 BC.

Pashinyan: Armenia, Azerbaijan failed to agree on Karabakh wording

PanARMENIAN

PanARMENIAN.Net – Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that no agreement was reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the formulations on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during an EU- mediated meeting on May 22.

Pashinyan, President of the European Council Charles Michel and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held their third meeting since December in Brussels on May 22 and focused on the situation in the South Caucasus and the development of EU relations with both countries as well as the broader region. According to a statement from the EU, Michel told the two leaders that it was necessary that the rights and security of the ethnic Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) be addressed.

And because of a lack of agreement, Pashinyan said, Michel decided to make comments that, in his opinion, would express as many elements as possible about the positions of both sides over formulations

Pashinyan made the remarks during a Q&A session in parliament, in response to a question from Civil Contract Party member Arman Yeghoyan, who said that Michel’s remarks created the impression that “Artsakh’s right to self-determination remains out of the agenda”.

“A very serious discussion on the Karabakh issue took place in Brussels, and as a result of that discussion, the differences between the positions of Armenia and Azerbaijan were registered,” the Prime Minister as saying.

He emphasized that those differences are expressed publicly. Azerbaijan considers that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is resolved, Armenia considers that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not resolved.

“And in the possible context of the peace talks, you know that Azerbaijan has presented its 5 principles, and we have presented our observations and agenda in this regard. We have said that talks should be held on that basis. With the principles we have brought forward, the security and rights of the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh and the clarification of the final status of Nagorno-Karabakh are recorded,” Pashinyan said.

Sports: Mkhitaryan destined to stay with Mourinho’s Roma

May 16 2022

The recent injury to Henrikh Mkhitaryan has underlined his importance to Jose Mourinho’s Roma, who are working to renew his contract.

The 33-year-old Armenian forward has missed the last three consecutive league matches due to a hamstring injury, and it doesn’t seem to be a coincidence that the Giallorossi have only scored one goal in 270 minutes of action without him, leaving them to pick up only one point. Roma are hoping to recover Mkhitaryan in time for the Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord on May 25.

As detailed by Calciomercato.com, Roma are confident that they can tie down Mkhitaryan to a new contract; his current deal expires at the end of next month, so the two parties will sit down to discuss things after the Conference League final next week.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal man wants to stay, but he’s keen for a €4m annual contract plus a €2m signing bonus. The Giallorossi, on the other hand, would prefer to dilute that into a two-year deal.

YEREVAN, MAY 20, ARMENPRESS. Over the years, the U.S. Embassy has been proud to send a number of artists and art community leaders to the United States on various exchange programs. The alumni of those programs came together to highlight the vibrant art scene in Armenia through a new program sponsored by the Embassy called: Art Alive!, the U.S. Embassy said in a news release.

The Art Alive! project will bring Armenian masterpieces to life through site-specific performance and video art projects. The first-of-its kind event was implemented in 2018 by Vahan Badalyan, CAO of the National Center of Aesthetics (NCA), Artistic Director of NCA Small Theater and alumnus of an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).  He traveled to the United States on a trip focused on exploring ways to use performing arts to empower youth to action. He hopes the Art Alive! effort will help museum visitors see Armenian art in new and exciting ways.

This year with the support from the U.S. Embassy, through the creation of large-scale immersive performance installations, museum visitors will witness the “revival” of the most significant exhibits of Yerevan Modern Art Museum, Parajanov – House Museum, and Dzitoghtsyan House-Museum in Gyumri.

“Referring to the success of the ‘ArtAlive!’ project with the public back in 2018, we have decided to continue the collaboration this year with several museums in Yerevan and Gyumri, with the aim of promoting and increasing appreciation among the public for the rich collections of the museums.  This year again the works, already well-known to the art lovers, will be presented with completely new artistic approaches, presentations, and interpretations,” Badalyan said.

Throughout the Art Alive! Events, three museums will open their doors to a new way of showcasing their art on May 21, 25 and 29.  Each installation will last between 3-7 minutes and will be performed several times over the course of the Art Alive! Experience.

Entry is free at participating museums during the Art Alive! Week of events. The complete schedule is as follows:

Turkey’s Bid for U.S. F-16 Deal Comes As They Oppose New NATO Members

Washington, D.C. – A new report published today by the Program on Peace-building & Human Rights at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights, in partnership with the Turkish Democracy Project, exposes Turkey’s duplicity in political maneuverings, unworthy of being sold a new round of deadly F-16s, reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly).
The Columbia University report states, “Erdoğanism is a form of populist authoritarianism and political ideology based on the cult of personality. Corrupt at its core, it is chauvinistic, nationalistic and discriminatory towards ethnic and religious minorities. Many Russian civil society activists who relocated to Turkey found that Turkey is a gulag of a different sort…Turkey is at a fork in the road. Down one path lies reform and a truly democratic Turkey that respects minority and human rights. Down the other lies greater kleptocracy and human rights abuses.”

“The U.S. and NATO are supposed to support democracies, not arm those killing democracy, so we are fundamentally opposed to the U.S. providing weapons to Turkey, especially given reports that F-16 fighter jets have been used against the Armenian people in the Fall 2020 War on Artsakh,” said Assembly Co-Chairs Van Krikorian and Anthony Barsamian. “At a minimum, the U.S. should ensure that Turkey ends its aggression against the Armenian people, instead of enabling the Erdoğan and Aliyev regimes to continue on genocidal courses,” the Co-Chairs continued.
Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Turkish Democracy Project’s report provides information on “efforts by Russian oligarchs to protect their assets by harboring their superyachts in Turkey, buying high-end Turkish real estate, and setting up bank accounts in Turkey to shield their assets from foreclosure.”
David L. Phillips, Director of the Program on Peace-building & Human Rights at Columbia University, stated that Turkey’s cooperation with Russia “must not be rewarded by allowing its purchase of 70 F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits from Lockheed Martin.” He continued that “the Biden administration should be more astute differentiating friend from foe.”
This report was issued concomitantly with Turkey publicly stating its opposition to Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO, and a delegation of Erdoğan allies traveling to Washington.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.
