Armenians living in Syria have found themselves in a hard and dangerous
situation because of domestic political fight within the country. To
help local Armenians, the authorities of Armenia should immediately
set up a Council of Coordination of Assistance to Syrian Armenians,
public activist, Karine Hakopyan, said at today’s press-conference.

“It is obvious that Armenia cannot interfere in domestic political
events in Syria. It cannot promote or hinder integration of Syrian
Armenians, but it can and is obliged to give shelter to the people
which should leave Syria”, – she said and added that Armavia air
company has recently canceled Yerevan-Damascus and Damascus-Yerevan
flights, which is evidence of indifference of the Armenian authorities
to the destiny of Armenians of Syria.

For her part, public activist and journalist, Margarit Alktaljaryan,
added that it is very much difficult for Armenians of Syria to get
even a temporary citizenship in Armenia, and only 300 out of 1554
Syrian Armenians got temporary citizenship.

Syrian citizen Nairi Lazarian said that Syrian Armenians are in a
hard state. Some of them were arrested on spy charges. “It is clear
that such a policy is not directed specifically against Armenians,
but unfortunately, very often Armenians find themselves in unpleasant
situations. Taking all this into account, the authorities of Armenia
have to create the needed atmosphere for the Syrian Armenians to come
back to their native land and live here, and not to increase the tax
burden, just the same way as it happened with many businessmen from
Syria which were trying to start new business here”, – she said.

At present about 80 thsd Armenians live in Syria, mainly in Aleppo
and Damascus.

AZERBAIJANI DEPUTY PM: ARMENIAN PRESIDENT’S REGIME NOT TO RESOLVE NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s regime will not resolve the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani deputy Prime Minister Ali
Hasanov told media today.

He expressed his attitude at a meeting of foreign ministers of the
OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen in Paris today.

“Sargsyan’s regime in Armenia came to power by shedding the blood of
Azerbaijanis,” he said. “So, it will never solve this problem.”

“In this regard Russia must demonstrate its clear position. It must
put pressure on Armenia and OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries
must join in this,” the deputy Prime Minister said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
