Demonstrators calling for criminal charges against Ruben
Hayrapetyan, the MP and owner of the Harsnakar Restaurant, took up a
vigil outside the Armenian National Assembly this morning.

Carrying a variety of banners and placards, the demonstrators also
attempted to get the message across to European Council President
Herman Van Rompuy, who was leaving the parliament after addressing the
legislature.

Protestors briefly scuffled with police who ordered the crowd to leave
the street and move back to the sidewalk.

The crowd remained steadfast and the cops were forced to back down.

HAK MP’s Aram Manoukyan, Levon Zourabyan and Nikol Pashinyan also
appeared and told the demonstrators that four parliamentary factions
(HAK, ARF, Heritage and Prosperous Armenia) had launched a petition
calling for a special parliamentary session on the matter but that
they suspended the measure after Hayrapetyan resigned his mandate.

The HAK MP’s stated that the opposition is still calling for criminal
charges to be filed against Hayrapetyan.

Protestors then marched to the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Sociologist: Aggression Propagated By TV Has A Negative Effect On Gr

SOCIOLOGIST: AGGRESSION PROPAGATED BY TV HAS A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON GROWING GENERATION

The aggression propagated by the television, has a negative effect
on the public culture in Armenia, sociologist Vahram Mirakyan said
at today’s press conference in Yerevan.

“The Armenian TV series idealizing the criminal figures contribute
to the growth of aggression in the country. I’d like to point out an
interesting fact: the Armenian series started going on the air in
2005-2006, and it is since 2005 that violence has started growing
in the country. For instance, in 2005 some 8,000 cases of violence
were fixed in the country, but now their number is 15,000”, Mirakyan
stressed.

Mirakyan thinks that it is necessary to create institutional
structures, which will regulate the television broadcasting. He also
positively estimated the prompt response of Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan to the open letter of the Public Council asking the President
to change the broadcasting policy.

For his part, military expert David Jamalyan said that the state
should create a political culture of television, which will bring up
the growing generation instead of propagating violence or aggression.

He said that the state should finance various programs not only on the
Public TV. It should also hold various competitions, he added. Only the
joint use of encouragement and punishment can give positive results,
he said.

Armenia Must Adapt Itself To Evolving Situation In Syria – Expert

ARMENIA MUST ADAPT ITSELF TO EVOLVING SITUATION IN SYRIA – EXPERT

PanARMENIAN.Net
July 3, 2012 – 19:07 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Though unable to affect Syria crisis, Armenia must
adapt itself to rapidly evolving situation, according to Caucasus
Institute director, political expert Alexander Inskandaryan.

“What’s happening in Syria can be characterized as humanitarian
disaster,” the expert said during Yerevan-Moscow TV spacebridge
“New Middle Eastern Realities: Challenges to Moscow and Yerevan.”

“The development of events in Syria is crucial to Armenia. Thousands of
ethnic Armenians arrive in their historic homeland to ask for Armenian
citizenship. In 2012, their number rose to 2000. The figure is only
for those asking for citizenship, it would drastically increase were
I to cite those who ask for residence permit or arrive as guests,”
the expert said.

“Recently, Syrian factor has been playing a serious role in Armenia’s
real estate market. 60 000-person Armenian community of Syria is a
serious figure for a country like ours,” the expert noted.

“Syria is very important to Middle East. Whatever is happening in the
country is to some extent due to the regional role of Turkey and Iran.

Such a reformatting of the region has a major importance to Armenia
and Russia,” he concluded.
