Woman arrested for promoting prostitution in Armenia’s Abovyan

ABOVYAN. – A 57-year-old formerly convicted I. M. has offered her room
to seven prostitutes in Armenia’s Abovyan city regularly receiving for
it AMD 5,000 ($12), the First Instance Court of Abovyan informs
Armenian News-NEWS.am adding the case is being investigated at them.

A criminal case is instigated on Article 262: Maintaining dens of
prostitution or pimping, which is punished with a fine in the amount
of 300 to 500 minimal salaries, or correctional labor for the term of
up to 1 year, or with arrest for the term of 1-3 months, or with
imprisonment for the term of up to 5 years. The woman is arrested.

It is a glum truth that most of Australia’s political leaders have
been philistines, unable to grasp the part a creative culture plays in
engendering identity and cohesion in a society.This miraculous album
is testament to the vital place music occupied in the psyche of
Armenia, as that land suffered centuries of invasions and oppression.A
collection of mostly traditional pieces, it is the latest project from
Jordi Savall, surely among the busiest people alive. He records about
two albums a year that require massive preparation and loving
presentation, and involve augmenting his Hesperion XXI group with
musicians specialising in the projects.Perhaps because this is his
first recording after the death of his wife, the divine soprano
Montserrat Figueras (the album is dedicated to her), Savall has opted
for an all-instrumental program, even though some pieces were
originally songs.Several of the more stately melodies are carried by
his bowed instruments or the Armenian kamancha. Otherwise, the key
instrument is the stunningly versatile duduk, a double-reed flute
capable of being eerily voice-like, and ideal for making the laments
ache with deep sorrow. Yet this is music that speaks of rising from

Armenian PM met with US Vice President

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, who is
currently on a working visit in the Unites States, met with US Vice
President Joe Biden in the White House.

At the meeting, the parties discussed issues of development of
bilateral relations and Armenia’s reforms.

Tigran Sargsyan also met with the Executive Director of the Millennium
Challenge Corporation, Daniel Johannes, and discussed the prospects of
Armenia’s participation in the program.

The Prime Minister will return to Yerevan today.

EYE SIGHT TO BEHOLD: Iris like planet’s surface

THESE photographs reveal the intricate patterns hidden in all our
eyeballs. They show the complex structure of the iris – the coloured
circle around the pupil.

The iris was named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow to represent
its many colours. The pictures were taken by amateur snapper Suren
Manvelyan who used pals as models – but refused to reveal the secret
of his beautiful snaps.

He said: “The process of taking these pictures remains my secret.”

The 36-year-old Armenian started experimenting with film at 16.

He added: “Every day we see hundreds of eyes but do not even suspect
they have such structure – like the surfaces of unknown planets.

“I wasn’t aware they are of such complicated appearance.”

The main income of the President of the Court from the selling
agricultural products

It is not a secret that the judges in Armenia belong to the group of
well-paid people. However, judging from the declarations presented to
the Ethics Committee of Officials in 2011, for instance the Presidents
of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan do not possess any
movable and luxurious estate. The main source of their income is the
salary and other payments equal to it.

Of course there are exceptions. For example the President of the Court
of General Jurisdiction of Erebuni and Nubarashen administrative
districts of Yerevan Artur Ohanyan in 2011 had income amounting to AMD
18 million 691 thousand 748. Whereas only AMD 7 million 691 thousand
748 was the salary, the rest AMD 11 million, according to declaration,
from the sale of agricultural products.

The extra source of the income of the President of the Court of
General Jurisdiction of Center and Norq Marash administrative
districts of Yerevan Ruben Vardazaryan was much more modest, only AMD
129 thousand 780 deposits. The rest AMD 6 million 366 thousand 933 was
the salary.

Nevertheless, all the above-mentioned officials declared substantial
financial resources.

The President of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Center and Norq
Marash administrative districts of Yerevan in the beginning of 2011
had AMD 14 million and USD 104 thousand, and by the end of the year:
AMD 15 million and USD 105 thousand.

The President of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Erebuni and
Nubarashen administrative districts of Yerevan had AMD 48 million and
USD 64 thousand in the beginning of the year and AMD 50 million and
USD 64 thousand by the end of the year.

President of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Shengavit
administrative district of Yerevan had AMD 16,5 million in the
beginning of the year and USD 20 thousand, and AMD 20 million and USD
20 thousand by the end of the year.

The declarations of the presidents of the Courts of General
Jurisdiction of Ajapnyak and Davtashen, Qanaqer-Zeytun,
Malatia-Sebastia administrative districts of Yerevan are not published
on the official webpage of the Ethics Committee of Officials.

Boxing: Abraham stops French challenger in title defense

Germany-based Armenian professional boxer Arthur Abraham defended his
WBO super middleweight title with an eight-round TKO of France’s Mehdi
Bouadla on Saturday.

In a mostly one-sided fight at a Nuremberg arena the 32-year-old champ
dubbed King Arthur fought vigorously, with his right hooks often
finding the target.

Brave Bouadla managed to stay on his feet but the referee rightly
stepped in to stop the fight when Abraham was pounding his badly hurt
opponent in the eighth round.

The victory was Abraham’s fourth in a row as he improves to 36-3. The
Armenian suffered a number of painful defeats in the Super Six
tournament before regaining the winning formula this year.

Abraham captured his current WBO super middleweight title beating its
holder Robert Stieglitz in August.

Aznavour eìtait preìsent au milieu de chansons de type folklorique
moderne. Les tables environnantes, aÌ forte proportion feìminine,
parlaient en partie armeìnien, ce qui est geìneìralement bon signe,
quand on veut manger du local d’ailleurs. La formule deìjeuner, au
tarif astrono- mique de 12,50 euros, comporte un buffet `aÌ volonteì’
et un plat du jour. Ce mardi, c’eìtait ou brochette ou aumonieÌre avec
des tas de choses dedans, dont meÌ?me le service, souriant, n’avait pas
la totale souvenance. On a pris `brochette’.

POCHETTES SURPRISE. Mais auparavant, il y a le buffet. N’imaginez pas
des montagnes de victuailles, deìbordant jusque sur les lustres. Il y
a une petite dizaine d’assiettes garnies de petites entreìes froides.
C’est mezze pour tous. On a donc notamment piocheì des `lahana dolma’,
ou `chou farci’. Ce sont en quelque sorte des pochettes surprise
constitueìes d’une feuille de chou friseì contenant du bleì, des pois
chiches et des haricots rouges. Excellent. Malgreì l’intituleì `aÌ
volonteì’ on a quand meÌ?me un peu mauvaise conscience `et si les
autres tables me prennent pour un groin ?’. Finalement on en a repris
que deux fois. Ces `lahana dolma’ sont addictifs. On a aussi piocheì
dans une salade de poivrons et d’aubergines au gouÌ?t deìlicieusement
fumeì. Ces leìgumes semblent eÌ?tre aÌ l’entreìe armeìnienne ce que la
boule est au bilboquet, un eìleìment indispensable. On les retrouve
marineìs, ou cuits, de diverses façons, dont de l’aubergine assortie
de noix, trois couleurs de poivrons meìlangeìs aÌ des morceaux de
poulets, ou marineìs avec du fromage aigrelet, ou encore du long
poivron piment vinaigreì. Houmous bien taquineì de seìsame et citron,
et tabouleì fortement herbeux eìtaient eìvidemment au programme. Puis
la brochette donc, de viande hacheìe, bombardeìe d’oignons et de
persil. Du gouÌ?t, des textures, et cette geìniale petite aci- diteì
citronneìe qui parcourt tout le mezze. On a aimeì. On aurait, en
revanche, pu faire l’impasse sur les desserts : coulant au chocolat un
peu paÌ?teux, baklava eìtrangleì par abus de cannelle… On conseille
de se concentrer sur le saleì.

Bakou menace de fermer son ambassade au Mexique

L’ambassadeur azéri au Mexique a menacé que si une statue du dictateur
azéri Heydar Aliyev est retiré d’un parc de la ville de Mexico Bakou
va fermer son ambassade au Mexique.

« Si le monument est enlevé, cela va sans doute conduire à une forte
dégradation des relations entre l’Azerbaïdjan et le Mexique, y compris
la fin des investissements et la mesure la plus extrême – la fermeture
de l’ambassade elle-même » a déclaré l’ambassadeur d’Azerbaïdjan au
Mexique Ilgar Mukhtarov.

Il a également été prompts à revendiquer que la communauté arménienne
du Mexique a guidé l’opposition à la statue. « En dehors du Mexique,
je représente l’Azerbaïdjan dans six autres pays de la région
latino-américaine, je peux théoriquement passer dans l’un de ces
états, dans le cas où serait prise la décision de déplacer le monument
» a expliqué Ilgar Mukhtarov.

Il a dit que si un autre emplacement est offert par le gouvernement,
il y aura de la place pour la discussion. « Si on nous suggére un
meilleur endroit, alors nous sommes d’accord, mais actuellement nous
agissons de manière légale, car l’accord sur la mise en place du
monument dédié à Heydar Aliyev sur le boulevard a été signé par le
gouvernement fédéral, les autorités municipales et l’Ambassade » a dit
Ilgar Mukhtarov. Ce dernier a également dit que l’Azerbaïdjan pourrait
annuler 4 milliards de dollars de projets d’investissement au Mexique.

« Si Marcello Ebrard [maire de Mexico]décide d’enlever le monument,
nous annulerons les projets, fermerons l’ambassade, cela nuira aux
relations entre les deux pays, et cela ne serait pas bon pour son
image d’être la personne qui a empêché un investissement de 4
milliards de dollars » a déclaré l’ambassadeur.

Swan Lake skating rink is open to visitors

YEREVAN-The opening of Swan Lake skating rink took place in Yerevan.
The official opening was accompanied by a show with the participation
of singers and members of figure skating and hockey national teams.

The skating rink will stay open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
>From 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. cleaning works will take place on the
skating rink, after which the skating rink will work until 11.00 p.m.,
the press service of Yerevan City Hall informs Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The hourly prices for tickets have not changed: AMD 500 ($1.5) per
hour with own skates and AMD 1000 ($3) if the skates are provided by
the skating rink.

Zhoghovurd: Switzerland still brokering Armenian-Turkish negotiations?

The paper says an interesting fact has been revealed yesterday –
foreign ministries of Armenia and Switzerland conducted political
consultations.

The paper says according to the official information the consultations
were held by Armenia’s deputy foreign minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and
Ive Rosie, Swiss State Secretary.

The paper claims the meeting is remarkable after Switzerland assumed
the role of active mediator in the Armenian-Turkish football
diplomacy.

Moreover, during these months, Switzerland continues mediating in the
Armenian-Turkish relations while the Armenian authorities are refuting
the information. The paper says the political consultations are
indirect proof of that.
