MONTREAL – As travelogues go, Figure d’Armen is not exactly upbeat.

But there is a weary dignity to Marlene Edoyan’s understated
documentary on the people of Armenia.

A Montrealer who grew up in Lebanon, Edoyan is a member of the
Armenian diaspora, displaced by years of unrest in the country. Eager
to connect with her roots, she heads off on a month-long trip to the
motherland, travelling through the striking yet desolate countryside
and stopping in Armenian-populated territories of the neighbouring
republics of Georgia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Her goal is not to deliver an overarching expose of Armenia’s troubled
history, or the hows and whys of its current situation, but rather to
hear, first-hand, the experience of everyday Armenians.

She finds a family living in a trailer, on a mountain in the middle of
nowhere; a farmer, returning home with his donkey; a group of widows,
sitting in front of a mound of bales of hay.

Each tells a similar story. The country has been in limbo since
seceding from the Soviet Union in 1990. Independence has led to a
world of problems, mostly relating to the lack of employment and
infrastructure.

Young Armenians leave the country in droves to go work in the Russia.

Those who stay behind, or who have returned, profess an undying love
for their native land while lamenting how hard things are. Regional
and ethnic conflicts add to a climate of mistrust.

A woman farmer explains how she never has a free moment to herself,
always doing chores to make ends meet, collecting firewood, milking
the cows, making cream, yogourt and bread. But she can’t imagine
herself anywhere else. “What’s abroad?” she asks. “Nothing.”

Dressed in a suit and admitting to having had a few drinks, a farmer
stands with his donkey, telling of his life in the army. He explains
that “Armenia has always suffered,” enduring attacks by the Persians,
Turks and Georgians, among others.

In the small region of Nagorno-Karabakh, in southwestern Azerbaijan,
the Armenian community is shunned by the Azerbaijani people.

There are no solutions in Edoyan’s film, nor is there much in the way
of dramatic thrust; there are only stories – heartfelt tales from a
forgotten people for whom life is never easy. By lending them an ear,
she gives them a voice.

Figure d’Armen screens in Armenian with French subtitles at Excentris.

Director Marlene Edoyan will introduce the film Friday and Sunday at 1
p.m. and 5 p.m. There will be special screenings of the film with
English subtitles, April 27 and 28 at 5 p.m. at Cinema du Parc. Visit

The Ayb High School’s robotics team, sponsored by VivaCell-MTS, had a
successful participation at the Fire Fighting Home Robot Contest held
on April 6-7 at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, USA. The Aybstorm
robot prepared by the students and their teacher Vazgen Gabrielyan
received a special prize at the contest.

As the Partner of Ayb Senior School and sponsor of robotics project,
VivaCell-MTS allocated AMD 14 million of financial assistance for the
creation of robotics laboratory, its equipment, continuous operation
and further development, as well as for participation of the robotics
team in local and international competitions.

“VivaCell-MTS extends hands to AYB Senior School in line with its
commitment to encouraging the development of robotics in Armenia. As a
responsible corporate citizen, VivaCell-MTS supports young peoples’
interest in the sphere of robotics, which can positively affect the
development of related spheres of industry in Armenia and help
developing the country’s competitiveness in international markets.

VivaCell-MTS is present wherever there is room to development,
wherever we can encourage our people’s intellectual excellence,”
VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian said.

The Fire Fighting Home Robot Contest organized by Trinity College is
celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and is considered one of
the premiere robotics events in the world. The contest includes two
categories – Fire Fighting Home Robot and RoboWaiter. Over 130 teams
from 7 countries took part this year, Armenia being represented for
the first time by Ayb’s small team. The Ayb robotics team competed in
the high school age group, which included around 30 participants. The
team successfully passed the first test thanks to a well-prepared
poster depicting the robot’s capabilities, and then faced the jury.

The fact that the Ayb team managed to fight its way into the top eight
in the group alongside teams from countries like Israel and China is
truly a remarkable achievement.

WE WERE DEALING WITH TERRORISTS IN YEREVAN ON APRIL 9 – OPPOSITION MP

April 17, 2013 | 14:08

YEREVAN. – I regret that a seasoned politician like opposition
ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party National Assembly (NA) Faction Secretary
Aghvan Vardanyan has not accepted and understood the reason for
the steps taken by opposition Heritage Party Chairman, former FM
Raffi Hovannisian-who was declared runner-up to the winner, incumbent
President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential election that
was conducted on February 18, but who claims to be the real winner in
the vote-during the protests that were staged in capital city Yerevan
on April 9. Heritage’s NA Faction Secretary Zaruhi Postanjyan stated
this during a press conference on Wednesday.

“On that day, Raffi Hovannisian did everything he could to avoid
bloodshed. We had to deal with terrorist actions, which were backed
by Serzh Sargsyan, and we could not have succumbed to terrorist
provocations,” Postanjyan said, and stressed that the aforesaid
protests did not result in any arrests, injuries, or casualties.

To note, commenting on the recent rallies in Yerevan, Aghvan Vardanyan
had noted that he could not understand why Raffi Hovannisian had
honored the memory of Jesus Christ, preyed with the Police Chief
at the Armenian Genocide Memorial, and left for Moscow to bring the
“triumph” of the Armenian people.

and suggested their perspectives and possible solutions.

Prosperous Armenia party candidate Gurgen Gasparyan says in their
party platform the main emphasis is on the elimination of hazardous
and perilous productions, creation and exploitation of a recycling
factory in Nubarashen (where the main waste dumb is), which would
supply the town of Nubarashen with electricity.

In reference to building a recycling factory, president of For
Sustainable Human Development NGO Karine Danielyan says previously
Japanese specialists suggested a method of solving the Nubarashen dump
issue, according to which methane flammable gas should be collected
and burnt to produce electric power, however today their suggested
method is applied only partly.

“The authorities dragged the signing of the agreement with the
Japanese for so long that they [the Japanese] told me during our
meeting that they would widely declare their distrust towards our
authorities. After that our side gave one third of Nubarashen dump to
the Japanese. The economy ministry had suspicions that the Japanese
wanted to monopolize our waste management, which is simply ridiculous.

All this actually makes me suspect that some people are doing illegal
business on Nubarashen dump,” she says.

According to Barev Yerevan alliance’s Susanna Muradyan, nothing is
left from Alexander Tamanyan’s (chief architect, author of Yerevan
city plan) green Yerevan, while he had taken into account the fact the
Armenian capital is located in a semi-desert climatic zone.

“Today we have 6 square meters or less per resident, instead of the 20
square meters we used to have. The biggest issue, however, is that the
city plan has been distorted and continues being distorted every day
with the city council’s and personally the mayor’s participation.

Today the Circular park (downtown Yerevan) has become a circular cafe.

As soon as they feel pressed, they declare superior state interest and
do their business,” says Muradyan.

Rule of Law party (OEK) representative Hrayr Sargsyan believes that
the city plan has to be revised in order to solve Yerevan’s
environmental issues, special attention should be paid to the
construction licensing processes.

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s party platform in the section
on the environmental challenges stresses the importance of freeing
Yerevan from illegal construction. The party representative Apres
Zohrabyan explains that it implies construction at the expense of
green areas.

“Such examples are the Botanical garden, the Hrazdan gorge, the
Victory Park, where green areas of city importance have been used for
urban development,” he says.

Eva Tovmasyan, from the Armenian National Congress, says society is
left out of initial decision-making in matters concerning the city
environment. She says that the recent years’ greening and
beautification has been only decorative – flower beds, little gardens,
meadows, which does not solve the oxygen deficiency issue.

Environmentalist Danielyan is convinced that the solution of the
existing environmental issues requires a serious political will.

“The Yerevan city plan adopted in 1971 was supposed to work until
2000, but we have not found the decree by which that city plan should
stop being in action. They put the city plan aside, said it was a new
regime, hence a new approach — hey put a building wherever they
want,” says the environmentalist. “Today’s environmental issues are
the consequences of urban development. Foreign visitors come and say:
“You had small Paris, why have you turned it into New York?” or “Why
are you destroying old Yerevan? What is the purpose of those tightly
lined-up giant buildings?”

ANCA Criticized John Kerry For Pushing For A Greater Turkish Role In

ANCA CRITICIZED JOHN KERRY FOR PUSHING FOR A GREATER TURKISH ROLE IN NAGORNO KARABAKH ISSUE

13:58, 18 April, 2013

YEREVAN, APRIL 18, ARMENPRESS. The ANCA criticized The U.S. Secretary
of State John Kerry for “pouring fuel on the fire”. As reports
“Armenpress” the ANCA facebook page states that Secretary of State John
Kerry pushes for a greater Turkish role in the Nagorno Karabakh issue
– despite Turkey’s growing anti-Armenian bias. Among other things it
was stated: “Kerry states that Ankara can play a “constructive role”
in resolving that “frozen conflict”.

The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stated in the House of
Representatives, that Turkey would be a constructive player in the

believe that Turkey would be a constructive player in these issues,”
said the US Secretary of State.

Armenian National Congress Party Much Stronger Now

ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS PARTY MUCH STRONGER NOW

14:51 ~U 18.04.13

In terms of human resources the Armenian National Congress (ANC) is
much stronger than ever before, Levon Zurabyan, Board Vice-Chairman,
ANC party, told journalists on Thursday.

At its founding convention on April 13, the ANC party proved it to be
a strong political force. “In recent years, we have had kind of crisis.

One-man parties have been impeding the ANC’s activities. Secondly,
we could not put up with the fact that numerous parties willing to
be involved in political processes were unable to.

The newly-formed ANC party has about 2,000 members.

The ANC party is the first in independent Armenia’s history with a
program envisaging groups within the party.

On April 30, the ANC is holding a “nation-wide” rally in Freedom
Square to level criticism at Armenia’s authorities.

A truly opposition force is consistent in opposing the authorities.

But the one critical of their allies in opposition cannot be
opposition, said Zurabyan.

Certain Forces Seeking Posts In Yerevan Municipal Elections – Armen

CERTAIN FORCES SEEKING POSTS IN YEREVAN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS – ARMEN MARTIROSYAN

12:30 ~U 18.04.13

Heritage party Vice-Chairman Armen Matrirosyan, who tops the list of
the Barev Yerevan (Hello, Yerevan) bloc in the upcoming elections to
Yerevan’s Council of Elders, believes that the election campaign is
being marred by the authorities employing administrative resources
and certain political forces seeking posts.

“Certain political forces are posing as opposition ones, seeking
to grab some posts,” Martirosyan told Tert.am. On the other hand,
forces like Barev Yerevan are really struggling reforms.

His advice is to view political forces’ teams as a whole rather
than look at the candidates that top the lists to see the particular
political forces and their members running for Yerevan’s Council of
Elders – oligarchs, criminals, big business or citizens involved in
the struggle. “This is of paramount importance and the Barev Yerevan
bloc stands out,” he said.

The Barev Yerevan bloc launched its election campaign on April 17.

It is not too late. In contrast to other political forces, the Heritage
party has been politically active for a long period. “So we have no
problem of stepping up our activities or introducing ourselves to
society,” Martirosyan told Tert.am.

As regards the tendencies in public attitude to the Heritage party, he
believes that the Barev Yerevan bloc may lay serious claims to victory.
