The President of the Republic of Armenia recognized the 2002 decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia on depriving the former Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia Vagharshak Harutyunyan of his military rank as null and void.

“Based on the proposal of the Prime Minister, in accordance with Article 139, Part 1 of the Constitution.

Decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia of July 22, 2002 “V. V. “Decree NH-1135-A on depriving HARUTYUNYAN of his military rank,” the president’s decree says.

Vagharshak Harutyunyan is a military and political figure, lieutenant general.

in 2002 On July 22, he was stripped of his rank by the decree of President Robert Kocharyan. Vagharshak Harutyunyan considers his demotion illegal, and according to the “Republic” party, of which Vagharshak Harutyunyan was a member, his demotion was a means of political reprisal.

In 2019, his military rank was restored, and he was appointed vice-president of the Ukrainian Communist Party.

The conflict between Vagharshak Harutyunyan and Robert Kocharyan started in 1999. After the October 27 terrorist attack, upon learning about the terrorist act, the army closed the roads leading to Yerevan by the order of the then Minister of Defense Vagharshak Harutyunyan.

And days later, Robert Kocharian described that action as arbitrary, unacceptable action.

GeoPromining urges journalists to abandon ‘primitive’ practice of seeking political context when covering foreign investors’ activities

ARKA, Armenia
Aug 16 2019

YEREVAN, August 16. /ARKA/. GeoProMining, a diversified international group of mining companies, developing the Sotk gold deposit in Armenian province of Gegharkunik, has urged today local mass media to abandon what it called the ‘primitive’ practice of seeking a political context when covering the activities of foreign investors in Armenia.

The move comes after some Armenian electronic mass media outlets placed a story titled “Russians treat workers at Sotk gold mine as slaves. Employees sound  alarm.”

‘The heartbreaking story about ‘slaves’ working for Russian exploiters became an occasion for an obviously puff piece story aimed against  GeoPromining Gold company, otherwise how can one explain why journalists  ignore elementary principles of journalism that require  double-checking of facts and an alternative point of view,” GeoProMining press service said in a statement.

‘GeoProMining officially declares that the facts stated in the story are not only untrue, but are also a pure provocation on the part of those who grossly violated the rules of labor discipline and safety,’ the company said.

It said  one of the ‘characters’ of the story, Karo Melkonyan, who accuses Russians of treating local workers as ‘slaves’, was caught  July 5 this year red-handed by security officers of the deposit when  trying to steal gold-bearing ore. Security officers asked him to show what he had in his pockets. Instead Melkonyan said he wanted to go to the toilet to get rid of evidence, however, the security  officers reacted according to the instructions and prevented it.

The whole process was filmed on video cameras, the company filed an application with the police and provided law enforcement agencies with all the relevant materials. Karo Mikaelyan asked the company to let him resign instead of being sacked.

Another ‘character’ of the story , Andranik Margaryan, came to work drunk, got on a bus and went to the quarry. Security officers noted his inadequate physical condition and decided to dismiss him for gross violation of labor discipline. However, the employee asked to be dismissed at his own request.
GeoProMining Company declares that it strictly observes all the norms of the Labor Code and the legislation of the Republic of Armenia, the standards of labor discipline and safety.

GeoProMining was founded in 2001. In Armenia it owns two assets – the Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Combine and GPMGold, which develops the Sotk gold mine and runs the Ararat gold recovery factory.
The company  says over 12 years of operation in Armenia, its investments exceeded $505 million. The company’s social investments over the past 10 years amounted to $ 8.5 million. GeoProMining has about 2,500 employees. –0–

A woman in Ireland, whose Armenian husband—Vahram Harutyunyan—was deported from the country, wants him to be allowed to return, The Irish Times reported.

Harutyunyan has been separated from his family for almost a year.

On August 15 last year the Armenian-born barber, who has lived in Ireland for almost 13 years, was deported, leaving his wife, Viktoria Gagkaeva, and their Irish-born daughter, Alina, behind .

He had gone to Dublin for a regular appointment at the offices of the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service, but shortly after arrival he was arrested and within 24 hours was on a flight back to Armenia.

Gagkaeva says apart from a five-minute phone call, he never got a chance to say goodbye to his family. After being detained, his phone was taken from him, he was put in prison, and then put on a flight in the early hours of the following morning, she says.

Gagkaeva and Alina went to visit Harutyunyan some weeks ago, but she says Ireland is their home, and she is pleading for her husband to be allowed return.

In a statement the Irish Department of Justice said for reasons of confidentiality neither the Minister nor his officials in the immigration service could comment on individual cases.

Fighting with us makes no sense, since it is doomed to failure – Pashinyan

ARKA, Armenia

YEREVAN, July 22. /ARKA/. Armenia needs such an army, such a state and society that can ensure an unconditional victory to it, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Monday as he attended the military educational institutions’ 2018-2019 academic year graduation ceremony at the Defense Ministry headquarters.

The premier congratulated the students on graduating from military educational institutions and being awarded the rank of officer, the press office of the government reports.

Nikol Pashinyan handed out graduation certificates to a group of students.

“We need such an army, such a state and society that can make the potential adversaries realize that fighting with us makes no sense, since any war waged against us is doomed to failure as it will lead to the unconditional victory of the Republic of Armenia, its people and its armed forces,” he is quoted by the government’s press office as saying at the ceremony.

Stressing that Armenia is a pacifist state, the premier said that its armed forces are the main guarantors of peace.

“The Chinese military strategy believes that talented generals win without a war, and we need such peace,” he said. “And all of us, irrespective of our uniform, are dedicated to these victories, and each of us, from the National Assembly and to the House of the Government, should serve this noble mission. We all wear the epaulettes of our people, our history, our ancestors, our descendants. Long live those who wear these epaulettes with dignity.”  -0—

Preventing Atrocities Against Religious Groups a Priority, Says Mnatsakanyan

Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan addresses the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom organized by the In Defense of Christians in Washington on July 18

A gathering of foreign ministers from around the world in Washington this week is a great opportunity to collectively identify effective ways and partnerships for better protection and promotion of the freedom of religion or belief, according to Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan who is attending what is known as the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom organized by the In Defense of Christians.

During the conference, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke on behalf of the United States, and Vice President Mike Pence delivered a keynote address on Thursday.

Mnatsakanyan explained that Armenia has twice participated in the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom hosted by the U.S. Department of State. He said that as a strong proponent of universal human rights, Armenia promotes adherence to international human rights conventions and strong commitments to ensuring freedom of religion within the framework of the overall democratization of the society.

The non-violent Velvet revolution that took place in Armenia in last year once again demonstrated the power of tolerance, non-discrimination and respect for human rights and their importance in the Armenian society.

“Religion represents an institution of identity and the protection of the identity. Our history is a telling story about that. Tolerance and respect for all religions is based on our national experience, Christian heritage and long history of living together and sharing with other faiths. Freedom of religion and belief is an absolute human right which cannot be abolished or curtailed under any circumstances including in conflict situations. Protecting religious minorities played a crucial role in establishing modern systems of human rights which clearly established that grave and massive violations of human rights cannot be considered as a domestic affair but should be of legitimate concern of all members of the international community,” said Mnatsakanyan.

He added that protection of religious groups has been well-defined in international agreements such as the Universal Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

“Preventing mass atrocities against members of religious groups is an absolute priority for Armenia. We know what it means to be a persecuted religious group within the oppressive framework. It is a duty for us to pledge support to all those who are persecuted, including on the basis of their religion and belief today,” said Mnatsakanyan.

“Armenia became a safe haven for a number of vulnerable religious minorities particularly Yezidis and Assyrians. Today Yezidis are the strongest minority group in Armenia, and we are very proud that the biggest temple of this ancient people very soon will open in their Armenian homeland. Together with the most ancient Christian churches of the world and magnificent Blue Mosque of Yerevan it will symbolize beauty of faith and tolerance,” explained Armenia’s Foreign Minister.

“Unfortunately, we have been witnessing recurrence of mass atrocities including acts of genocide against Yezidis and Christians in the Middle East. These persecutions occur in the name of religion, as religion is often misused and abused by those who perpetrate violence or justify it,” added Mnatsakanyan.

Armenia’s top diplomat explained that attempts to equate victims and perpetrators by referring to their religious differences is misleading for a simple reason: perpetrators unlike the victims do not represent any religion and attempts to justify grave crimes including genocide by summoning religious solidarity or hiding behind religion is an insult to any religion.

“The rehabilitation of persecuted communities, the return and restitution of the places of worship, educational and other property are essential components of protection of the freedom of religion. Today we have received more than 20 thousand refugees from the Middle East and provided assistance to them on the ground,” said Mnatsakanyan.

“Armenia stands ready to cooperate with all interested parties to recover ancestral presence of Christians in the Middle East by rebuilding their lives, communities and churches. The Armenian people historically have been significant contributors to diversity, harmony and prosperity of the countries and societies of the Middle East.  This conference provides an excellent platform to initiate partnerships to this end,” added the minister.
