Karabakh Presidents holds meeting to discuss building of new sport complex

STEPANAKERT. – President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Bako
Sahakyan convened a working consultation dedicated to the construction
of a new sport complex in capital Stepanakert.

The preliminary project of the complex was presented by the minister
of municipal engineering Karen Shahramanyan, NKR president’s press
service reported.

President Sahakyan considered important the existence of such a
facility in Stepanakert, adding that it would substantially contribute
to the development and popularization of sport and physical culture in
the republic.

Head of the state gave instructions to improve the project, stressing
that it should be done properly and perfectly.

Chairman of the State Committee on Sports under the NKR Cabinet of
Ministers Razmik Hovsepyan and other officials participated in the
meeting.

Coca-Cola Armenia targets 40 mln. liters sales in 2013

YEREVAN, May 17. /ARKA/. Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Armenia
is planning to sell around 40 million liters of its products in 2013,
general director of the company Gagik Danielyan said.

“We posted a growth this year. Unfortunately, I cannot tell the
volumes, but we keep recording year-to-year increases”, Danielyan said
at a joint press conference with US ambassador to Armenia John
Heffern.

Since the beginning of its activities in Armenia, the company has
increased its production volumes by almost four times, he said.

Danielyan also said the company buys part of the required raw
materials from local producers. The company is ready to buy sugar and
bottles in Armenia as well if local manufacturers ensure the required
quality and certification, the general director said.

Ambassador Heffern who visited the company today on 17 years of
Coca-CVola’s presence in Armenia said Coca-Cola is one of the biggest
American companies and an American symbol.

Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Armenia has been operating in
Armneia for 15 years now, since 1996. During the period, the company’s
sales exceeded 400 million liters in the country.

Capital investments totaled over 7.5 billion drams (over $20mln) in
the last five years.

Today the company offers 68 kinds of products, with 98% of it produced
in Armenia. Among its mainstream products are bubble beverages such as
Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, sparkling and spring water, natural juices,
nectars, energizing drinks and teas. ($1=416.69drams).-0–

Crowd protesting gas bill hike plan address letter to president

The crowd, which rallied outside the Government earlier on Thursday to
protest against proposed plan for increasing the natural gas tariffs,
headed to the Presidential Office in the afternoon to submit a letter
to Serzh Sargsyan.

Before reaching there, they marched in procession to the Public
Services Regulatory Commission which had been earlier asked to
consider a plan for raising the tariffs.

In their latter, the protesters call upon the Commission to leave the
fees unchanged, otherwise threatening to declare a civil disobedience
and urge the population not to pay for the consumed natural gas and
electricity.

It comes after Armenia’s major natural gas supplier, Armrusgasprom
(owner: Gazprom, Russia) asked the Commission to consider a plan for
raising the gas tariffs.

The authors of the letter claim that a decision to accept the plan may
cause major social problems, spurring large protests. They say higher
fees for natural gas will inevitably cause price surge in other
sectors, thus raising the poverty rate.

`We believe that a hike in the natural gas prices will be the last
drop to push the society to a zone of aggressive turbulence. The
method to of boosting migration to relax social tension no longer
works. Those who wanted to go are already gone; those who have stayed
link their future to their fatherland, Armenia, and have nowhere. They
will struggle against the violation of their social rights,’ reads the
letter.

Activists go on struggling for Yerevan’s covered market

A group of people go on holding protests in front of Yerevan’s covered market.

`Taron [Yerevan mayor Taron Margaryan], have you forgotten your
pledges? Stop disfiguring our monuments,’ read the placards in the
protesters’ hands.

Artsvi Bakhchiyan, who reminded the Yerevan mayor of his promises,
told Tert.am that the entire building, except for the front, has been
pulled down.

`We are witnessing a destruction of one more masterpiece of
architecture,’ he said.

Architect Pavel Jhangirov notes that the interior of the covered
market is unique.

Yerevan’s covered market was privatized by Samvel Alexanyan, a member
of Armenia’s parliament.

Armenia’s Ombudsman urges defense minister report to Parliament

The office of the Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) of Armenia issued
a statement urging Armenia’s Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan to
present an annual report on the death rate in Armenia’s Armed forces
to the National Assembly.

One conscript died, another one was rushed to military hospital after
conscript Davit Khachatryan opened fire at them at about 3.30 pm, on
May 15, in a military unit in Noyemberyan.

The Ombudsman’s office expects Armenia’s Military Prosecutor’s Office
to guarantee an impartial and comprehensive investigation and the
judicial system to create all the necessary conditions for the
Prosecution and Defense.

The Ombudsman’s office proposes that Armenia’s minister of defense
present an annual report on the human rights situation in the Armed
Force, particularly the death rate and causes of deaths, harassment of
servicemen, availability of medical services, as well as on efforts to
improve the situation.

The Ombudsman’s office has applied to Armenia’s minister of defense
for explanations. Representatives of the Ombudsman’s office plan to
visit the injured serviceman in hospital.

TURQUIE
La Turquie exclut des députés australiens de Gallipoli

La Turquie a déclaré que certains députés australiens ne seront pas
admis à participer aux célébrations de l’Anzac à Gallipoli, en raison
d’une motion reconnaissant les génocides arménien, assyrien et
grecque.

Les deux chambres du parlement de Nouvelles Galles du Sud (Conseil
législatif et l’Assemblée législative) ont adopté des motions la
semaine dernière, en affirmant la réalité des génocides de 1915 que la
Turquie nie toujours.

En réponse, le ministère turc des Affaires étrangères a publié une
déclaration indiquant que ceux qui étaient responsables de cette
motion seront `sans doute privés de l’hospitalité et de l’amitié`
normalement octroyée aux Australiens.

Plus précisément, le communiqué officiel indique : `Ces personnes qui
tentent de nuire à l’esprit de Çanakkale / Gallipoli n’auront pas leur
place dans les cérémonies où nous commémorons Çanakkale ensemble, nos
fils gisant côte à côte dans notre sol.`

L’Anzac Day est une journée nationale en Australie, commémorant les
soldats australiens et néo-zélandais qui ont perdu leur vie au cours
de la Première Guerre mondiale après le débarquement à Gallipoli, en
Turquie, le 25 Avril 1915. Chaque année, des milliers d’Australiens
font un pèlerinage à Gallipoli pour les cérémonies de commémoration.

Le Comité National Arménien d’Australie (ANC Australie) estime que
cette déclaration signifie techniquement que tous les membres des deux
Chambres du Parlement du Pays de Galles du Sud ne pourront pas faire
ce pèlerinage, et ne bénéficieront pas de l’hospitalité s’ils visitent
la Turquie en raison de cette motion qui affirme la réalité du
génocide arménien, ainsi que des génocides des Assyriens et des Grecs.

Le Directeur exécutif de l’ANC Australie Vache Kahramanian a déclaré :
« La République turque essaye une fois de plus de museler un Etat
démocratique en raison de son désir de dire la vérité.`

`La Turquie a maintes et maintes fois tenté de s’ingérer dans les
affaires législatives des nations et des assemblées législatives qui
ont le devoir moral de reconnaître le crime odieux du génocide.`

`La Turquie tente d’utiliser la mémoire sacrée de Gallipoli comme
instrument politique. C’est une action déplorable et elle doit être
condamné par tous `, a ajouté Vache Kahramanian.

sa s`ur Irina Tovmassian, Lousiné, la beauté arménienne vient de se
fiancer. L’heureux élu est Arthur Hovhannissian (36 ans) dont Lousiné
a rencontré à Dzargatsor et qui est selon Irina « Un très bon garçon
». Il s’avère effectivement qu’Arthur Hovhannissian est diplômé en
sciences informatique de l’Université de Virginie (Etats-Unis). Irina
Tovmassian affirme qu’elle est très heureuse pour sa s`ur. Les
fiançailles se dont déroulées le 13 avril dernier dans l’un des
meilleurs restaurants-clubs d’Erévan. Actuellement le couple se
trouverait aux Etats-Unis.

NSW lower house recognises Greek genocide

NSW is Australia’s first state to recognise the genocides and hopes
are that other states will follow

The New South Wales Parliament’s Legislative Assembly (Lower House)
adopted a unanimous motion recognising the Armenian, Assyrian and
Greek genocides. This follows a similar motion passed by the NSW
Parliament Legislative Council (Upper House) last week.

This motion, introduced by Premier of New South Wales Barry O’Farrell,
formally recognised the Assyrian and Greek genocides, while at the
same time reaffirming the historical reality of the Armenian genocide.

Last week’s Legislative Council motion was introduced by the Hon. Rev
Fred Nile. That motion was also passed unanimously.
This comes as the result of the combined advocacy efforts of the
Armenian National Committee of Australia, the Assyrian Universal
Alliance, and the Australian Hellenic Council.

NSW is Australia’s first state to have recognised the Armenian
genocide in 1997 and hopes are other states will follow in recognising
all genocides.

Azerbaijan stages large-scale military drill

The National Army of Azerbaijan has launched a large-scale military
exercise near the frontline with Armenia, Azerbaijan’s Defense
Ministry said on Tuesday.

The exercise under the command of Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, which
involves both the army and the air force, will last until the end of
the week, according to a statement from the ministry.

The exercise will help further enhance coordination between the air
force and ground troops, and improve operational, technical and
administrative practices, said the statement.

The Azerbaijani-Armenian frontline is a contact line between the two
countries’ troops in Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994 following
several years of conflict over territorial disputes.

Ar-Be branches out into Yerevan

YEREVAN, 15 May (BelTA) – A subsidiary of the Armenian-Belarusian
Trading House Ar-Be has opened in Yerevan downtown, BelTA has learnt.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Armenia Stepan Sukhorenko, Director
General of Multi Group Concern Sedrak Arustamyan, Chairman of the
Belgospishcheprom Concern Alexander Zabello.

The new store displays Belarusian goods which are in great demand
among local residents. According to the Belarusian diplomat, the
opening of the joint trading house Ar-Be in 2010 was a timely and
right decision. Today it features nearly 11,000 descriptions of
Belarusian products. The annual trade has already exceeded $10
million. `We have decided to expand into Yerevan. This year we plan to
open several subsidies more in Yerevan. Next year we will focus on
regional centers that show keen interest in our products,’ Stepan
Sukhorenko said.

According to the Ambassador, Belarus and Armenia have been steady
developing their relations. An additional impetus to this process was
added by the recent official visit of the Belarusian head of state. In
particular, the sides have outlined a number of highly promising
projects in industrial cooperation and agriculture.

Stepan Sukhorenko noted that Armenia successfully uses BelAZ trucks.
Tractors and attachments are in demand in agriculture. Belarusian
tires account for nearly 25% of the Armenian market.
