Republican party was, is and will be Armenia’s core political force: Sharmazanov sums up passing year

Aysor, Armenia
Dec 26 2018

The passing year was full of challenges for Armenia and Republican Party of Armenia, party’s spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov told Aysor.am, summing up the passing year.

“The 2018 was year of big changes, drastic changes. Change of power took place, not revolution, but change of power. But we have what we have. The executive power and its head managed to exercise pressure on the legislative power, occupy the National Assembly and conduct immediate elections again by pressures,” Sharmazanov said.

He stressed that anti-democratic elections took place on December 9 with the campaign having passed in the atmosphere of fear and intolerance. He stressed that as a result, Armenia will have a parliament deprived of opposition.

“No matter how much parties state that they are opposition, Tigran Avinyan is right saying that ‘we are 88, part of us may be opposition’,” Sharmazanov said.

He also referred to a number of concerns relating country’s foreign policy.

“Despite Pashinyan’s affirmations that everything is good, that Armenia will keep the post of the CSTO secretary general, I will say that Armenia has been deprived of the post. It is already a fact,” Republican party’s spokesperson said.

He stressed that nothing is smooth in Armenian-Russian relations either.

“There are many concerns in the economy sector too, the economy is collapsing,” he said, adding that thousands of citizens will lose their jobs after New Year.

“It appears that we will not have separate ministries of Diaspora and culture. It is really rather worrying policy,” he said.

Sharmazanov said the current authorities have failed to register success in any sector.

“Number of ministries is cut, number of unemployed grows, investments reduce, post of CSTO secretary general is lost, nothing is clear in Karabakh issue,” he said.

Eduard Sharmazanov said that for Republican party the biggest failure in 2018 was the loss of power.

“But we revived on December 9. It was proved by 60,000 votes we received at elections. December 9 showed that the Republican party was, is and will be one of the core political forces of Armenia and non-parliamentary opposition will consolidate over it,” Sharmazanov said.

He though added that in 2018 the party registered success too serving Armenia’s interests in all the international parliamentary platforms, presenting and defending Armenia’s interests in the PACE, EU, CSTO and CIS.

“We have defended Artsakh’s and Armenia’s interest and stated that there is no opposition and authority if the matter relates to the state interest. As a non-parliamentary force we must use our international ties for pro-Armenian settlement of Karabakh issue and international recognition of the Armenian Genocide,” he said.

“Politics is a fight and we are ready to fight in all legal ways for the sake of Armenia, Artsakh. I wish peace to all,” Sharmazanov concluded.

168: Bio-labs in Armenia are civilian, military presence is ruled out – foreign ministry

Biological laboratories operating in Armenia are of civilian nature, and military presence there is ruled out, foreign ministry spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan told a press briefing.

“The sanitary-epidemic control sector is part of the Armenian-Russian bilateral relations. A dialogue exists over this matter, however these laboratories belong to Armenia and have civilian nature. There cannot be any talk about a military presence there in the case of Armenia,” she said.

Earlier Russian FM Sergey Lavrov had said during an interview that Armenia and Russia are currently working on the draft of a document that will guarantee the absence of foreign military in Armenia. He was speaking in the context of the laboratories.

Vigen Sargsyan urges Pashinyan stop being opposition figure and turn into leader, head of country

Aysor, Armenia
Dec 20 2018

Armenia’s acting PM has two complicated issues to solve, Republican party first vice chairman Vigen Sargsyan wrote in Facebook.

“First: Pashinyan must become the country’s leader and head and stop being an opposition figure voicing different speeches,” he wrote, stating that he is to form an acting responsible team from those who did nothing but criticized the former authorities.

“As head of the team he will be directly and personally responsible for the mistakes, shortcomings, crimes, inattentive phrases, self-initiated meetings, personal qualities,” he wrote, adding that Pashinyan will have to find the sensitive balance to back his teammate on one hand and not to become prisoner of the intervention himself, on the other.

As to the accusations voiced against former authorities, Sargsyan wrote that gaining points by show-ups will not help in settling the country’s development issue and neither in gaining public’s and international partners’ trust.

“Pashinyan has made people used to his graphic of ‘lives’ but that time has passed. The time has come to work and register results. It is necessary to move forward, assume responsibility, solve issues, establish ties, strengthen country’s defense,” Sargsyan wrote.

Speaking about the CSTO, Vigen Sargsyan stressed that since its foundation Armenia has been its most active and effective member.

“It is enough to say that during Armenia’s presidency in the organization the Collective security strategy has been adopted which was being discussed for many years. We have settled the issue of buying weapon by internal prices,” he said, adding that Armenia has got a significant practical benefit from it.

Sargsyan urged not to humiliate the work carried out previously. “It was enough to get power but will not be enough to keep it. Do more and it will be assessed by all. The time to assume responsibility has come,” Vigen Sargsyan wrote.

ATP Continues to Make a Difference on the Landscape of Armenia, One Tree at a
Time
By Ani Melkonian
STEPANAVAN, Armenia--The deadly fires in California force us to think about our
forests and what we're doing to keep Armenia's precious natural resources safe.
Though the cause of the fires is still under investigation, initial evidence
points to manmade causes.
How safe are Armenia's forests? Let's just say that as long as there are
individuals anywhere in the world who don't believe that their action or
inaction can make a difference, nothing is ever safe.
While firefighting efforts may prove beneficial, too often wildfires in rural
areas are ignored and can be left burning for days in Armenia due to lack of
resources and infrastructure. Even the smallest fires cause huge damage as
Armenia has a forest cover of just 11 percent, according to official statistics.
That is why Armenia Tree Project (ATP) gives great importance to preventative
measures. On the education front, ATP is raising awareness and teaching young
Armenians across the country about forest fires prevention, especially in
targeted areas like Lori, Kotayk, Shirak, Tavush, and Gegharkunik.
Tchalo, the firefighting gampr shepherd dog who is the face of ATP's campaign,
is actively involved in the process through an animated PSA and educational
posters (visit www.tinyurl.com/tchalo to view the PSA).
Miles from California on the outskirts of Stepanavan, 19-year-old Angela
Mkrtchyan is planting trees in ATP's afforestation plot with her mother and
older brother. For the next 11 days, the Mkrtchyan family's livelihood will
depend on the little seedlings of ash, apple, beech, maple, oak, and pear
trees. ATP hires more than 150 workers each year to help with planting and
maintenance.
It's a short-term job but for the Mkrtchyan family, who have no permanent work,
it is vital. It is Angela's second season with ATP but her family has been part
of the planting brigade for the past four years.
"Many things we do in our daily lives have a negative impact on the environment
and on the lives of future generations. Planting trees is one of the few things
the next generations will thank us for, so I'm happy to be doing it," says
Angela.
Angela is planting close to 200 saplings each day. By the end of the 11-day
journey she will earn about $180, which is slightly over the average monthly
salary in rural Armenia.
"Our cause becomes theirs. During this time they form a special relationship
with the forest, and so they encourage others to preserve and protect it as
well," says ATP Forester Vahe Martirosyan.
Similarly, over 40 men and women, young and old are working in Tashir on ATP's
forestry plots and on a joint forestry project with GIZ in Aparan, Arayi, and
Vardenut.
In total, ATP has planted another 187,845 trees this fall, bringing the total
for 2018 to 257,910 trees. The overall total of trees planted in Armenia and
Artsakh since 1994 is 5,722,562.
"We're proud of our results, of our positive impact on the land and the
livelihoods we are helping to improve," explains Executive Director Jeanmarie
Papelian. "Many of the trees we planted this year are fruit trees, or 6,640 to
be exact. And the total harvest from ATP's trees was more than 1,600,000 pounds
of fruit this year, which was distributed in the communities all for the
benefit of local people."
Two hundred families in Lori's Ghursali Village received coppiced wood for the
winter from ATP. The wood comes from a project done in the village on 10
hectares with HayAntar. Locals were hired and trained to cut tree stems which
grow close together or from one stump to near ground level so the trees may
grow to their full potential and thrive.
"To get 5.7 million trees planted, ATP needed a lot of helping hands from
people like Angela and her family. The organization's soon-to-be 25 year
history shows us that not only are trees indispensable to our wellbeing but
that there are ways you can afford a living through them as well," adds
Papelian.
"Today, more than ever, there is a renewed opportunity to create an Armenia
where the people and the environment can coexist in harmony. ATP's work to help
create an Armenia that is clean and green, with a healthy respect for people
and the planet, continues stronger than ever as Armenia maps out its new
future," concludes Papelian.

Nikol Pashinyan to the Sasna Tsrer Party: I want to remind you that it is not weak-willed Serzh Sarsyan being in power now.

Nikol Pashinyan to the Sasna Tsrer Party: I want to remind you that it is not weak-willed Serzh Sarsyan being in power now.

Yerevan November 26

Ani Mshetsyan. And about. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during the pre-election campaign in Artik city sharply reacted to the statement of representatives of the Sasna Tsrer party that new extraordinary parliamentary elections should take place in Armenia in a year and a half. “Have you really decided that you have the right to decide the fate of the parliament, as well as other people? I want to note that Serzh Sargsyan and his weak power are not the weak-minded in power now,” Pashinyan said.

He also stressed once again that no one should take the smiles and the good breeding of the representatives of the bloc for weakness. “There have already been similar precedents, and those who thought so were on asphalt. I do not advise anyone to go this route, no matter who he is,” the acting Prime Minister emphasized.

“The next parliament will be legitimate, and it will be valid for as long as the law requires, unless the residents of Armenia decide otherwise,” Pashinyan stressed. Note that at the press conference of the Republican Party, Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Arpine Hovhannisyan, referring to this statement of the Sasna Tsrer Party, noted that she hopes that the new parliament of the country will work as much as specified in the Constitution. “I really hope that the new National Assembly will function as much as specified in the Constitution. Since every dissolution of parliament, a change of government is a shock to the country. After all, when the country is constantly in a state of uncertainty, it is very dangerous,” the vice-speaker concluded . It should be noted that on November 26, Varuzhn Avetisyan, who heads the Sasna Tsrer party’s all-state list, stated that the leadership of the All-Armenian Sasna Tsrer party believes that the next two years for Armenia seem to be transitional, therefore, new extraordinary parliamentary elections.

Political scientist Suren Sargsyan addressed the members of Nikol Pashinyan’s “Civil Contract” party.

“In your program, only the following thought is written regarding relations with the USA. “We will develop friendly, partnership relations with the USA in various economic, scientific and educational and social spheres.”

I want to understand why we will not develop political (including with Congress) and military (including with the Pentagon, intelligence agencies), cooperation in the fight against terrorism, etc. Washington also gives us military aid with various programs, not to mention the Kansas Guard.

And if this is a response to Bolton’s statement, then it is something else,” he wrote.
