June 26, 2013 – 14:23 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Ukrainian scientist, G.S. Skovoroda Philosophy
Institute director Miroslav Popovich supports Supreme Rada’s initiative
for recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

“I’ve long been waiting for Ukrainian politicians to make a step
to express our firm stance on the Armenian issue,” Popovich told
Analitika.at.ua.

“Genocide recognition is not only an attempt to restore justice and
express sympathy to people who fell victim to mass atrocities, it is
also a duty of the humanity to its past,” the scientist said.

On June 6, a draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide was submitted to Ukraine’s Supreme Council. The bill was
initiated by parliamentarians Vilen Shatvoryan and Arsen Avakov.

Armenia is interested in the full establishment of CSTO and in the
increase of its role in various fields, Secretary of Armenian National
Security Council Arthur Baghdasaryan said in his opening remarks at
the Yerevan-hosted forum on “Political and Security Guidelines for
the Formation of the Military Component of CSTO.”

He hailed the holding of the forum and expressed the hope that it will
be a stable platform not only for the development of cooperation in
various fields but also for the establishment of prospects.

Mr Baghdasaryan highlighted the importance of measures aimed at
regional security, and stressed the need to strengthen comprehensive

forum “Political and Security Guidelines in Formation of CSTO Military
Component” in Yerevan

Armenia will not blindly engage in an arms race with its top military
rival Azerbaijan, the country’s defense chief said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a major forum in Yerevan dealing with Collective Security
Treaty Organization-related policy issues Seyran Ohanyan also addressed
the issue of Russian arms deliveries to Azerbaijan, which elicited
mixed reactions in Armenia in recent days.

“We cannot but feel concerned about Azerbaijan’s military purchases,
but we know that our military-technical cooperation with our strategic
partner, Russia, is at quite a high level, and today we are doing
everything to maintain the balance of forces,” said the defense
minister, as quoted by Panarmenian.net.

Ohanyan said that the document signed with Russia earlier this week
as part of the visit of Nikolay Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s
Security Council, to Armenia, will enable the country to establish
direct links with enterprises of Russia’s military industry. “So,
the situation is under control,” said the minister.

Speaking to Armenian media while visiting the Russian military base
in Gyumri on Monday Patrushev defended Moscow’s sales of weapons
to Baku as a legal deal. At the same time, he allayed concerns in
Armenia that it would entail negative consequences for the country.

“I think the presence of Russian servicemen [on Armenian soil] is a
guarantee that there will be no negative developments in Armenia,”
the Russian official said.

Ohanyan reiterated that Armenia will concentrate on quality rather
than quantity of its weapons and ammunition.

Turkey Kicks Off Plans For Local Laser Weapon

TURKEY KICKS OFF PLANS FOR LOCAL LASER WEAPON

ISTANBUL – Anatolia News Agency

This file photo of a laser weapon system developed by the US Navy
for installation to the naval ships is taken from the website of
the institution.

Turkey is looking to develop a national laser weapon system with
the support of Turkey’s science watchdog, TUBİTAK, the Science and
Industry Ministry said.

“These kind of projects will be completed within five years,” Science
and Industry Minister Nihat Ergun said yesterday speaking to press
after an event.

“There are countries developing this [laser weapon system], the United
States being at the top, and there are others doing research into it.

Turkey is a country that can own these types of weapons on its own
conditions,” Ergun said.

Russia, China and Israel and Germany are reportedly undertaking studies
to develop technology similar to the LaWS introduced by the U.S. Navy.

Ergun said Turkey had kicked off attempts for research and development
of the weapon as TUBİTAK announced it would back high-cost defense
industry projects. The serial production of the system may be
determined depending on the needs of the Turkish Army at that time,
he said.

"I Have Said Repeatedly … Blood Will Be Shed"

“I HAVE SAID REPEATEDLY … BLOOD WILL BE SHED”

03:25 PM | TODAY | SOCIAL

“EcoLur” informational NGO has sent a letter to the Ministry of Nature
Protection. The letter says, “Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine
plans to increase the volumes of ore processing up to 25 million
tons per year and replenishes with new equipment. “When the new mill
will start working, nothing will remain from these mountains,” the
locals said.

Head of Kajaran village Rafik Atayan says, “They do whatever they
want to. We have appeared in a situation that everyone is afraid to
say something. Ten people are filling their pockets while the people
of our village cannot even afford to pay the bank loans. This is
permissiveness. Look the entire village in burried in dust.

Extensive increase in the indicators is a characteristic phenomenon for
ZCMC. In the course of 2011 the combine processed 15 million tons of
ore, this figure for 2012 was 17 million tons. The operating Artsvanik
tailing dump is planned to increase for the tails to be dumped. The
tails will flood the territories of Chapni and Sevaqar Villages
finding themselves under the formulation of “eminent public domain.”

First of all, it’s Nature Protection Ministry, which should pay
attention to this fact. The increase of production by 2 million tons
for one year is equal to the fact that another mining enterprise
has appeared. For comparison we would like to say that Kapan ore
processing combine processes 600,000 tons per year. Agarak copper and
molybdenum combine processes 3.5 million tons per year. We tried to,
but didn’t find any information on the website of Nature Protection
Ministry which would prove that any public hearings were held in
Qajaran on the production expansion in 2011 and 2012.

The locals complain that the dust is blown off to the city after
explosions at Qajaran mine. This dust should contain heavy and toxic
elements, but the website of the ministry misses any data about the
pollution of the atmospheric air in Qajaran town.

Taking into consideration the unprecedented increase in ore mining in
Qajaran mine and the planned volume of 25 million tons we consider
it necessary for the Nature Protection Ministry to publish the
following data:

1. The pollution of atmospheric air in Qajaran town, 2. The volume
of ZCMC dumps and the size of the territories used for tail dumping,
3. Environmental and nature management payments made by the combine
in 2012.

We also consider it necessary to set maximum load on environment
from the ZCMC operation, after which “forced resettlement” term can
be used.”

OPPOSITION NEEDS TO UNITE, SAYS ARMEN MARTIROSYAN

changes are needed in Armenia, in a very short time, “otherwise we
may lose our statehood in the sense of its content.”
