KARABAKH CONFLICT CAN BE SOLVED EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH NEGOTIATIONS AND COMPROMISE – NATO

October 18, 2013 | 13:13

YEREVAN. – The Karabakh conflict can be solved only through peaceful
talks and compromise, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative
said in Yerevan.

James Appathurai, Special Representative for South Caucasus and
Central Asia, recalled that NATO is not participating in the conflict
resolution.

“We promote the OSCE Minsk Group and more generally the Minsk process.

We have partnered with Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he said during the
Friday media briefing in Yerevan.

NATO is engaged in political dialogue with Baku and Yerevan, he
recalled, adding that during the meetings in Armenia and Azerbaijan,
“we always stress the importance attached to the exclusively peaceful
resolution of the conflict.”

Both in Armenia and Azerbaijan, representatives of NATO, including
Appathurai himself, conveyed clear message that there is no military
solution to the conflict.

“We said very clearly that the only solution can be reachef through
negotiation and compromise,” he emphasized.

In this regard, NATO’s Special Representative noted that it is clear
what benefits the regional countries will get from a peaceful solution
to the conflict. He added that NATO is aware of the plans to hold a

Sts. Vartanantz Church Celebrates Milestone, Honors Parishioners

Sts. Vartanantz Church of Chelmsford, Mass., marked its 35th anniversary
with services and a program last weekend, and welcomed Archbishop Khajag
Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America
(Eastern), who joined the community in its celebration.

On Saturday evening, October 12, Archbishop Barsamian met with the parish
pastor, the Rev. Fr. Khachatur Kesablyan, and members of the parish council
and parish delegates. He spoke about the historic bishops synod, which
convened at Holy Etchmiadzin last month, and he also highlighted Diocesan
programs. Parish leaders shared with the Primate updates on local programs,
and a discussion ensued on parish life.

On Sunday, October 13, Archbishop Barsamian celebrated the Divine Liturgy
and gave a sermon on the importance of the cross as a symbol of victory and
hope. “The Armenian nation is a cross-bearing nation-we are a khachagir
people,” Archbishop Barsamian said. “We have been the followers of Christ
for two millennia, and today our children and grandchildren must carry
forward our faith and heritage in the twenty-first century.”

Following the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Barsamian ordained five altar
servers. Jeremy Oldham was ordained to the sub-diaconate; David Arakelian,
Gregory Chekmeyan, Benjamin Clark, and Dominic Sampson were ordained to the
rank of acolyte. The young men have been working with Fr. Kesablyan to
master their new responsibilities.

Archbishop Barsamian then led the congregation in a special service of
veneration of the St. Vartan the Brave relic-a piece of stone encrusted with
the blood of Armenia’s 5th-century warrior saint, and encased in a beautiful
silver cross. The Primate had brought the relic to Chelmsford from St.
Vartan Cathedral in New York City, where it was first unveiled on the
occasion of the cathedral’s 45th anniversary in September. The relic is a
gift of His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All
Armenians.

Later that afternoon, some 180 people gathered in the church’s Kazanjian
Ballroom to mark the church’s 35th anniversary. Diocesan Council chair James
Kalustian gave a toast congratulating the Chelfsford community on its
achievements and wishing them continued growth in the future.

Matt Hanson, chair of the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen, presented the
parish with a proclamation honoring the day’s milestone. Richard Juknavorian
served as master of ceremonies. Remarks were made by parish council chair
Bruce Kayajanian and Sandra Boroyan. The afternoon also included musical
performances by parishioners.

“For the past 35 years, our church has attended to the spiritual needs of
our church family, providing an inspirational place of worship, religious
education for our children, a place to celebrate, nurture, and experience
our Armenian Christian heritage, and a haven to bring hope and comfort to
parishioners who seek relief from the many trials and tribulations of
everyday life,” Fr. Kesablyan said. “I am truly inspired by and proud of our
parish.”

The original Sts. Vartanantz Church was consecrated in 1916, in Lowell,
Mass. As the community grew in the decades following World War II, plans
were made to relocate the parish to a larger house of worship. Under the
leadership of its former pastor, the late Very Rev. Fr. Ghevont Samoorian,
the parish purchased a property in Chelmsford, and in 1978 the present
church was consecrated.

Also during Sunday’s banquet, the parish honored longtime members Patricia
Amboian and George Simonian with the “St. Vartan Award.”

Mrs. Amboian has taught the parish Sunday School, chaired the parish
council, and assisted with other church organizations. She currently serves
on the Women’s Guild and is a member of the church choir.

Mr. Simonian is a veteran of the Korean War and a longtime public school
educator. At Sts. Vartanantz Church, he chaired the parish council, led the
church’s building memorial committee, and launched its endowment fund.

“Both Pat and George, through their model of love, faith, and devotion, have
been inspirations not only to our parishioners but also to me personally,”
Fr. Kesablyan said.

Archbishop Barsamian closed the program with a message and benediction. He
expressed his gratitude to Mrs. Amboian and Mr. Simonian for their
dedication, and thanked the entire parish for their commitment to the
mission of the Armenian Church.

“Throughout our history, the Armenian people have been building churches
wherever they went. They have been raising up beautiful houses of worship
where they have gathered to rejoice, to pray, and to strengthen their faith.
And Sts. Vartanantz Church is no exception,” Archbishop Barsamian said.

“The spirit of the living Gospel has been exemplified by the people of this
parish, through your service on the altar, your efforts in parish
organizations, your outreach to the community, and your ministry to each
other. As you embark on the next chapter of your history, I pray that you
continue on this journey and inspire others to join you in your service.”

To Henrikh Mkhitaryan It’s A Great Honor To Surpass Arthur Petrosyan

TO HENRIKH MKHITARYAN IT’S A GREAT HONOR TO SURPASS ARTHUR PETROSYAN

09:56, 17 October, 2013

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 7, ARMENPRESS. The midfielder of the Armenian National
Football Squad and Borussia Dortmund Henrikh Mkhitaryan considers
it to be a great honor to surpass the record of the top scorers. As
reports “Armenpress” Henrikh Mkhitaryan made the following note in
his official facebook page: “It is a true honor to have surpassed
the great – Arthur Petrosyan’s record for all-time goals in Armenian
National Team history. Thank you for your kind words.”

The Armenian national football squad played draw with Italy with the
final score 2 – 2 on October 15. The final match in the World Cup
qualifiers Group B kicked off at Stadio San Paolo in Naples, Italy.

Armenia scored the first goal in the fifth minute mark. Armenian
striker Yura Movsisyan (Spartak Moscow) got on the end of a ball from
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who stole it from a poor back pass from Alberto
Aquilani. Defender Davide Astori tried to slide in to make the save,
but Yura easily went around him to put the ball in the bottom corner
from about 12 yards out.

Later Italy’s Alessandro Florenzi scored an equalizer.

Armenia regained the lead in the second half. Henrikh Mkhitaryan
(Borussia Dortmund) scored Armenia’s second goal. Mkhitaryan headed
Gevorg Ghazaryan’s left wing corner in off the crossbar and suddenly
Italy’s record of never having lost a home World Cup qualifier was
under threat.

Notwithstanding, the lead didn’t last very long. Just six minutes
later, the scoreline was squared once again. Andrea Pirlo sent forward
the ball from midfield, perfectly placed for Balotelli. Super Mario
hooked the ball in.

In Group B, Italy has already booked its spot at Brazil 2014, with
22 points, Denmark has 16 points, Czech Republic – 15, Bulgaria –
13, Armenia – 13 and Malta – 3.

After the World Cup qualifiers the Armenian national football squad
may improve its positions in the FIFA ranking list. Vardan Minasyan’s
team can appear in the 38th position with 687 points and be ahead of
the whole national football teams of the Post-Soviet Union republics,
except Russia and Ukraine.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was born 21 January 1989. He is an Armenian football
player who currently plays as a midfielder for German Bundesliga club
Borussia Dortmund and theArmenian national team.

Mkhitaryan has participated in 39 international matches and scored
11 goals for the Armenian national team since his debut on 14 January
2007. His previous clubs include Pyunik Yerevan, where he came through
the youth system, Metalurh Donetsk, and Shakhtar Donetsk. Mkhitaryan
was chosenArmenian Footballer of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012. In
2012 he was voted as the best Shakhtar player of 2011-12 season by the
fans, and Ukraine Premier League MVP. In 2012, Mkhitaryan was named
in UEFA’s Top 100 players by UEFA European Football Yearbook 2012-13.

Mkhitaryan was voted the CIS Footballer of the Year for 2012, making
him the first Armenian footballer to be named the best player from
post-Soviet countries.

On 8 July, Borussia Dortmund announced that it was set to sign a
four-year deal with Mkhitaryan for ~@25 (£21.5) million. Shakhtar
and Borussia officially “resolved all the necessary formalities”
and agreed on [email protected] (£23.6) million, making him the most expensive
purchase in the club’s history.

On his debut in a pre-season friendly against FC Basel on 10 July 2013,
Mkhitaryan set up a goal for Marco Reus in the 11th minute and scored
his first goal for the club 16 minutes later, helping his side to a
3-1 victory away at St. Jakob-Park. Mkhitaryan couldn’t take part at
the 2013 DFL-Supercup which his club won due to an injury he received
on a friendly game before that.

AYF To Protest Turkish Minister Speech At LA World Affairs Council

AYF TO PROTEST TURKISH MINISTER SPEECH AT LA WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL

October 17, 2013 – 13:10 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – On Oct 21, representatives of the Armenian Youth
Federation and Unified Young Armenians will hold a protest against
hosting Turkish Deputy Prime Minister at LA World Affairs Council.

Ali Babacan, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, has been invited to
speak at a Los Angeles World Affairs Council Event regarding Turkey’s
economic and foreign policy, including the US-Turkey business relations
and the future of economic investment in the region.

“As American citizens who value freedom of speech and expression,
ethnic and religious freedom, and the protection of basic human
rights, we cannot allow economic interests to overpower our values and
beliefs. We, the American People, stand in firm opposition to hosting
and developing relations with representatives of a government that,
since its inception, has systematically disregarded and violated
these basic liberties. The government of Turkey does not respect and
uphold the values that we regard as inviolable and fundamental to
American society, and the democratic world must awaken to the policy
of intolerance that guides their foreign and economic interests,”
the protest organizers said.

“Among its endless list of violations against basic human rights, the
Turkish Government is guilty of the systematic denial of the Armenian
Genocide, which took place during World War I. These massacres resulted
in the death of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians, the displacement
of countless others, and the uprooting of one of the most ancient
remaining cultures in the world. Furthermore, the first Genocide of the
20th century served as a blueprint for subsequent state atrocities,
including the Jewish Holocaust. Despite being recognized as the
first genocide of the 20th century by historians the world over,
the government of Turkey continues to deny its responsibility for
this crime against humanity,” they said.

Azerbaijan To Issue Protest Note Over Murder Suspect To Russian MFA

AZERBAIJAN TO ISSUE PROTEST NOTE OVER MURDER SUSPECT TO RUSSIAN MFA

October 17, 2013 – 12:35 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Azerbaijani embassy to Moscow is preparing a note
to the Russian Foreign Ministry with a demand to allow the consulate
workers of Azerbaijani diplomatic mission to see Orkhan Zeynalov,
news.az reported.

Zeynalov is suspected of murdering 25-year-old Yegor Sherbakov. The
murder caused mass riots in Moscow’s south.

“We will demand the consulate support to a person who is suspected
of murder. He will be visited by a lawyer and when necessary an
interpreter. Everything must proceed in a legal way”, the Azerbaijani
ambassador to Moscow, Polad Bulbuloglu said.

According to him, a number of violations were committed during
Zeynalov’s arrest. He also characterized the coverage of events in
Russian media outlets as “hysteria”.

The Azerbaijani singer and diplomat noted that “only a court will
decide whether Zeynalov is guilty”. Bulbuloglu noted that this was
a domestic scuffle and murder that occurs in big cities every day.

He noted that an Azerbaijani was found stabbed to death in Moscow on
October 16.

“A murder on a national ground, just because a person does not have
a Slavic appearance is not rare”, the Azerbaijani ambassador said.

The Biryulyovo district made headlines on October 13 after thousands
of antimigrant protesters stormed a local vegetable warehouse, where
many labor migrants work, and clashed with police.

That incident followed the killing of a Russian man by a suspected
migrant from the Caucasus.

On October 14, police arrested more than 1,200 migrant workers
in Biryulyovo. On Tuesday, police arrested an Azerbaijani citizen
suspected in the killing of the Russian man. A court in Moscow has
closed the vegetable warehouse in Biryulyovo for 90 days.

168 Zham: United States Rejects Armenia?

168 ZHAM: UNITED STATES REJECTS ARMENIA?

October 17, 2013

YEREVAN. – Information was disseminated, following PM Tigran
Sargsyan’s US visit in December 2012, that the American Millennium
Challenge Corporation will resume funding Armenia in 2013, 168 Zham
daily reports.

“This was linked to Armenia’s domestic political situation, rejecting
pro-Russian [attitudes], and adopting European integration.

“According to our information, however, the American side has rejected
the Armenian government to resume the Millennium Challenge program.

[And] the reasoning is quite brief: Armenia does not meet the program
criteria.

“Apparently, Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union has had a
significant impact on US intentions.

“[But] the Government of Armenia Information and Public Relations
Department informed that there is always a chance to be included in
the [Millennium Challenge] program.

“‘There are criteria the majority of which Armenia meets today. When
the Armenian government fully meets the set criteria, there will be
an opportunity to resume negotiations for inclusion in the program,’
they noted from the government,” 168 Zham writes.
