Shengavit excavation, American embassy in background

The foundation of Yerevan is often cited as 782 B.C., the year the
Urartun city of Erebuni was founded by Argishti I on a hill within the
borders of the modern city of Yerevan. While Yerevan may be considered
the direct descendant of Erebuni, mankind has lived there for many
thousands of years before King Argishti I built his city.

Visitors arriving at Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport pass the U.S. Embassy
on the way to Yerevan’s center. In back of the embassy is a small,
man made lake. Rising above the lake’s opposite shore is the Shengavit
Historical and Archeological Culture Preserve. Within the preserve
are excavations revealing settlements from the end of the 4th to the
beginning of the 2nd millennium B.C., as well a small museum containing
artifacts found at the site. The neatly arranged artifacts are labeled
in English, Armenian, and Russian. The actual archeological site spans
an area of 6 hectares (about 15 acres), though during the Soviet era
a hospital was built over part of the site destroying forever the
yet unexamined archeological evidence underneath.

The Shengavit archeological record contains 4 layers, each about 4
meters (12 feet) in depth representing distinct phases of habitation.

The lowest and oldest layer contains the archeological record of
inhabitants living around 4000 – 3000 B.C., while the uppermost,
most recent layer is dated to about 2000 B.C. Scholars believe the
site was continually inhabited for over 2000 years. Found within
the oldest stone age layer were crude stone tools and other items,
while the upper layer revealed sophisticated pottery, the presence
of agricultural activity, cattle raising, and copper tools as well as
stone molds used to cast copper implements. Buildings were constructed
of unbaked clay bricks set upon stone foundations with connected
circular and rectangular rooms. The inside walls of the rooms were
plastered. There was evidence that the walls were painted, though that
evidence no longer exists. Within the rooms were found triangular
hearths set upon stands. The circular rooms contained centrally
located stone pedestals upon which columns rested to support the roof.

Floors were made of pebbles covered with clay.

The Shengavit culture was spread throughout the Ararat valley and was
influential as far as western Armenia, Cilicia, northern Mesopotamia,
and Palestine. Obsidian tools from Armenia were found in the Middle
East. Anthropologists, analyzing human remains from Shengavit tombs,
believe the “Armenoid” skull type typical of current day Armenians
evolved in this region. Shengavit was linked to other settlements
in the region, all of which demonstrated a similar culture and were
connected by trade. While there is no record of the language used at
the time, scientists believe that a non-Semitic, non-Indo-European
language or family of languages was prevalent, traces of which remain
today within the Armenian language.

While it can not be stated that the early residents of Shengavit were
“Armenian”, as the Armenian nation, people, and language may not
have been formed at that time, it is likely that the tribes living in
the region ultimately coalesced to form the Armenian people and the
Armenian language. At a much later time migrating tribes introduced
Indo-European elements into the Armenian language.

Initial excavation of the site began in 1936 by Joseph Orbeli
(1887-1961) and Eugeni Bayburtyan (1898-1938) and lasted for 2 years;
then the site was abandoned. Orbeli was the director of the Hermitage
Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Bayburtyan apparently was a bit
too nationalistic; he was arrested by Stalin and was never seen again.

>>From 1945-1950 Sandro Sardaryan (1912-1995) studied the site and
then, from 1950-1983, led a new excavation of Shengavit. Yuli Tamanyan,
being an architect and member of the excavating team, performed the
site’s measurements. He was the son of famed architect Alexander
Tamanian who, in 1925, developed the general layout of Yerevan. In
1967 Sardaryan published a study “Primitive Society in Armenia” in
English describing Shengavit and other ancient settlements within
the Armenian highlands.

Shengavit excavation and museum

Currently on the Shengavit preserve one may view the foundations of
ancient dwellings and visit Shengavit’s nicely arranged museum. The
director of the “Shengavit Historical and Archaeological Culture
Preserve” is Vladimir Tshagharyan, an experienced archeologist and
architect with considerable experience in managing and preserving
Armenia’s large number of historical and archaeological sites. He is
assisted by Vano, an experienced construction worker, and Gayane –
a guide who is fluent in Armenian, English, Russian, and perhaps
a few other languages. The 3 person staff is severely underpaid,
receiving salaries that are impossible to live on in Armenia. They are,
in effect, volunteers as their motivations are the preservation of
Armenia’s important historical and archaeological record. In addition
to inadequate pay, there is zero budget (not an exaggeration – it’s
actually zero!) for the maintenance and renovation of the site. The
site desperately needs to install running water (there is no water at
the site), a sewage line (there is none), rest rooms, and a phone line
(there is none). They need a dozen or so boards to repair the benches
(they were denied $100-150 needed for the bench repairs by the head of
Yerevan’s Shengavit district – there are budgetary constraints!). The
museum building dates from 1920 when it was constructed to serve as
a station for Red Army officers. The roof needs repair and the museum
walls need reinforcement in order to support the used air conditioners
which were donated to the museum.

My wife and I spent a day visiting building supply stores where we
bought enough material to start the most critical repairs before
the arrival of winter weather. The staff does all the repair and
maintenance work, including digging trenches for a sewer line and
for a water connection. Part of the preserve was illegally sold to a
private individual. The director has gathered extensive documentation
on this illegal sale and presented the evidence to Yerevan City Hall.

He is assured that the matter will be rectified. If it is not,
he says, he will go to court – though hiring a lawyer will require
funds which he does not have. If it comes to this, and one hopes it
won’t, the Diaspora will need to help. Moreover the site is not fenced
in. I visited the site on two consecutive days. On the second day a
new pile of trash had been dumped on the site. Fortunately there is
a policeman stationed at the site during off hours to protect the
valuable artifacts in the museum and the undiscovered ones which
still lie underground.

Director Tshagharyan displaying Shengavit artifacts This is an
important site not just for the study of the formation of the Armenian
nation, but for studying the ancient history and culture of the
entire region. This past summer a group of American archeologists from
Pennsylvania were researching the site until the really hot weather
arrived, at which point they returned home. They plan to return once
the weather cools down a bit. It is embarrassing for foreign visitors
to see that such an important site is so severely underdeveloped
and ignored, except for the few people who are desperately trying
to maintain it. Of course there are severe financial shortages in
Armenia, but a recent U.N. survey indicated that Yerevan has more
expensive cars per capita than any other major city!

Vladimir “Vova” Tshagharyan, Shengavit’s director, has ambitions
to establish the amenities needed by visitors. The site needs to be
secured with a fence surrounding the area. The illegally sold land
must be returned. The antiquated museum building needs to be renovated
and ultimately replaced with a more modern facility with a library,
an area to study and preserve artifacts, and an area where visiting
archeologists can conduct their research. Shengavit’s director is
considering the establishment of a non-profit organization or an NGO
to oversee donations to the site.

The Shengavit Historical and Archaeological Culture Preserve is only
a 15-20 minute taxi drive from the center of Yerevan. Its entrance
is in back of the Shengavit hospital on Bagratunyats Street, on the
opposite side of Yerevan Lake from the U.S. embassy. Visitors are
welcome throughout the week other than on Mondays when most museums
in Armenia are closed.

A blog post in The Guardian addresses Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan’s yesterday’s speech in Egypt when the Turkish PM
condemned Israel, calling for the recognition of the Palestinean state.

Commenting on Erdogan’s attacking remarks about Israel, blogger Matan
Meridor criticises Turkey, recommending the country to deal with its
problems before raising human rights issues.

“Israel is entering a new era where [a] mood against us is growing,”
she said. “I am very concerned about the situation. It frightens me
to think that consequences could be more bloodshed.”

But Erdogan’s demand that Israel respect human rights was dismissed by
Meridor. “Turkey doesn’t even acknowledge the genocide of the Armenians
so it’s the last nation to preach about human rights,” she says.

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth has published an article which
says that the Foreign Minister of the Jewish state has ordered to
develop measures to counter Turkey in the international arena and
developing closer relations with Armenia, primarily through the
recognition of the Ottoman-era Genocide of Armenians, is being
considered as one of such measures.

During his upcoming visit to the United States Israel’s Foreign
Minister Avigdor Lieberman is going to meet with representatives of
the Armenian lobby and offer them Israel’s assistance in promoting
the Armenian Genocide recognition issue in the international arena.

In this regard, the world’s expert circles have been talking about the
likely deterioration of relations between Israel and Azerbaijan, which
obviously would not like a rapprochement between Tel Aviv and Yerevan.

Though, Azerbaijani officials and even experts prefer not to talk
about it, apparently believing that the statement of Lieberman is a
publicity stunt and the matter will not go as far as practical steps.

Close military-political and economic contacts have been established
between Israel and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is perhaps the only Muslim
country with which the Jewish state has a cloudless relationship.

Israel is the only country that sells unmanned aircraft to Azerbaijan,
which has an unresolved conflict with Armenia. In addition, Israel
receives most of its oil via the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline that stretches
from Azerbaijan through Turkey.

Israel’s ambassador in Baku has already stated that his country would
not spoil relations with Azerbaijan. There is no Israeli embassy
in Yerevan, and the Israeli ambassador to Georgia also acts as the
country’s ambassador to Armenia (with his residence in Tbilisi).

Armenian officials do not speak on this matter either as they realize
that any sudden movements in the Caucasus region are fraught with
changes in the fragile status quo. Besides, excessively close relations
between Armenia and Israel would clearly not be liked by Iran, which
is a major gateway for Armenia to the rest of the world.

Armenian Diaspora organizations have not been particularly enthused
either, as they do not think that the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide should become a subject of a momentary conjuncture.

Meanwhile, the world press pages have been quick to pick the
provocative statement of the head of research programs on Russia,
Eurasia and energy security of the American Heritage Foundation
research center Ariel Cohen.

In his opinion, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has
granted Armenia a historical chance to establish close relations with
Israel. The expert stated this to the web portal IzRus.

He added that even without any pressure of the Jewish lobby the
position of Turks in the matter of the United States recognition of
the 1915 Armenian Genocide is becoming weaker. “The recognition of
the genocide by Congress is a matter of time. And when that happens,
it will open up an opportunity for Armenians’ lodging claims for
compensation with the Turkish authorities,” said the former State
Department advisor.

“Israel does not want to sever relations with Azerbaijan. It is not
in its interest. Therefore, only showing tolerance and understanding,
Yerevan can achieve reconciliation and establishing good relations,”
concluded Cohen.

Meanwhile, Armenian political analyst Igor Muradyan thikns that Cohen
fuels ethnic discord and inadequately assesses the situation in the
Greater Middle East.

Relations between Turkey and Israel deteriorated after Tel Aviv refused
to apologize to Ankara over the deaths of Turkish citizens on board
the so-called Freedom Flotilla heading to Gaza that was stormed by
Israeli security forces. Following this declaration, Turkey announced
the expulsion of three Israeli diplomats from Ankara. Turkey also
declared a freeze on all military and economic ties with Israel.

And Erdogan vowed that the Turkish authorities would apply additional
sanctions against Israel in the near future. Later it became known
that Turkey would not allow the development of energy resources in
the Mediterranean by Israel unilaterally.

Erdogan said that Turkish warships would defend Turkish vessels
from attacks in international waters. “This statement angered Israel
because it wants to maintain its control over international waters
in the Middle East.” At the same time, Erdogan stressed that “the
Turkish navy is ready for any scenario, even the worst one.”

GENERALS DRIVE FLASHY CARS WHILE SOLDIERS’ FAMILIES ARE STARVING: SEFILIAN ON ARMENIAN ARMY

Speaking to reporters in the Armenian capital on Tuesday, commander
of the Shushi battalion during the Nagorno-Karabakh War and one of
the founders of the Sardarapat civic movement Jirair Sefilian asked
for forgiveness from the relatives of soldiers killed not in a time
of war while serving in the Armenian army.

“My condolences to the relatives of soldiers killed inhumanely… I
apologize to them, that we [and] our generation were unable to create
an Armenian army where morality should prevail. Again I apologize to
all the relatives of the victims, those who are death – I personally,
as well as those of my generation, bearing the guilt. Also, directing
my words to our people, I urge [you] to be hopeful and patient,
but not compliant,” he said.

The former commander added that the recent incidents are nothing new.

After the ceasefire regime was declared, beginning in 95-96, the number
of those killed was greater; however, unlike then, the number of those
killed as a result of internal relations and procedural violations
has increased in recent years.

“This system is incapable of shaping up or healing any establishment.

There will never be any changes in this materialistic army as long as
we have generals and commanders who drive $100,000-valued cars while
a majority of soldiers’ families can’t meet their basic daily needs.

Those soldiers call home, they say wait, six months will be up,
I’ll come and work – we’ll have money for our daily bread. In these
conditions of social injustice, nothing can be expected from these
scum,” he said.

Erdogan toujours selon Reuters.

chaque bateau d’aide humanitaire. Ce n’est pas le cas. Cependant,

a dit Lieberman. Les menaces de Lieberman pourront-elles être mises
a exécution ? Cela reste a voir.

Le Genocide De Smyrne

LE GENOCIDE DE SMYRNE

14 SEPTEMBRE 1922

YEREVAN. – Excavations at Areni 1 Cave in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor
region unearthed a more-than-5,900-year-old women’s straw-woven skirt,
Armenian Archaeology and Ethnography Institute Director Pavel Avetisyan
told Armenian News-News.am.

Avetisyan informed that this artifact was discovered in 2010 and,
even though they had informed about this precious item at the time,
interest toward it grew further only recently.

“The women’s clothing dates back to 39th century BC. So far we have
discovered the skirt’s parts, which were superbly preserved. It is an
amazing material with rhythmic color hues, and other remnants of the
straw-woven material were also discovered. Such thing is recorded in
Armenia for the first time,” Avetisyan noted.

According to Archaeology and Ethnography Institute’s director, the
artifact is currently under their care, but it will soon be sent to the
restorer who, until the arrival of French specialists, will work on its
restoration. Pavel Avetisyan added that, after the final conservation
process, the skirt will be exhibited at the History Museum of Armenia.

Areni 1 is the same cave where the world’s oldest leather shoe (more
than 5,500 years old), wine-press, as well as flaggy items and part
of a mummified goat’s body were discovered.

The film shooting part of “Tattoos of grandma” documentary by publicist
and director Suzan Khartalyan from Sweden are now completed.

The film is about the “embossed” fates of thousands of Armenian women
in the times of Armenian Genocide.

Suzan Khartalyan was the first person to shoot in 1988 a documentary
titled “Return to Ararat” covering the story of Armenian Genocide.

Today shooting another film the director puts important questions
and facts which have never been touched.

“The topic of Genocide is like a red line existing in my life and in
my work,” Suzan said in an interview with “Ermenihaber.am”.

Read the first part of the interview below:

– How did you have the idea to tell about the fates of Armenian women
who survived genocide?

-After the Ruanda Genocide and Darfur, media outlets have begun
widely covering stories of raped women. Studies have been held, which
revealed that raping women were a part of military strategies during
genocide. Hence, they weren’t only annihilating the rivals physically
but they were destroying their genetics.

-And did that strategy being applied during the Armenian Genocide?

– Yes, I found out that this same strategy was being used during
the Armenian Genocide. During the genocide Armenian women who were
just targets have been raped, raptured and used. If men were killed,
hundred thousands of women knew they were living but living dead.

– How did you unveil this mystery?

– During my studies, I’ve found some strange photos of Armenian women
and girls in the archives of National League. They were photos of
young women who had tattoos. Every case has an attached document
about the story of a girl – name, family, when they were raptured,
how long they lived in slavery, etc.

– How old were those girls and women?

– I was really shocked when I saw those documents, because some were
aged 8-12. But I was deeply shocked when I saw my grandma’s photo
there, who had tattoos all over her hands and face.

– So was your grandma also “embossed”?

– Yes, I didn’t love my grandma. She wasn’t like other grannies, she
didn’t like physical contact, she didn’t like hugs and kisses. We were
afraid of her, and her tattoos. I didn’t understand what signs they
were. But then I’ve found out it when I saw the photos of those girls.

-Why were those tattoos?

– Many Armenian women were kidnapped by Kurds and Arabs. Many were
robbed by Turks. In those days Armenian women and children were all
abandoned in streets, and anybody could take them. How many do you
want, who do you want? They could take them. Then they were sold, I
hear some stories that depending on woman’s age and how much she was
“used” the price differed. This was like a business. Tattoos were
made to show that the woman belonged to this or that tribe.

– Thus each tribe had its tattoo?

-Yes, each tribe had its own tattoo. Tattoos were signs of property.

My studies brought me to Frezno. There I found a group of women who
were called “Blue lips”.
