HURRIYET: SARKOZY AIMED AT MENDING RELATIONS WITH ARMENIANS OF DIASPORA

Panorama, Armenia
Sept 30 2011

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has spoiled relations with
Armenian Diaspora, when banned the draft of law on criminalizing
the denying of Armenian Genocide, is putting forth efforts to mend
the relations without strengthening ties with Turkey, writes Turkish
“Huriyet” daily.

The Turkish daily refers to renowned French Armenian chansonnier
Charles Aznavour’s concert performed in Paris and being attended by
the Presidents of Armenia ad France. The concert was dedicated to
the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s Independence.

“Hurriyet” highlights that there are about 500.000 Armenians having
the right to vote, and that socialist candidate Francois Hollande
has promised to support the Armenian Genocide bill.

The Turkish paper underlines that on October 6-7 French President
Nicolas Sarkozy will arrive in Armenia.

Southern Corridor Should Not Become A Source For Nourishing New War

SOUTHERN CORRIDOR SHOULD NOT BECOME A SOURCE FOR NOURISHING NEW WAR – ARMENIAN PRESIDENT

news.am, Armenia
Sept 30 2011

YEREVAN. – The Southern Corridor should not be allowed to become a
source for nourishing a new war, Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan
on Friday stated during his address at EU Eastern Partnership Summit
being held in Warsaw, Poland. In his address, Sargsyan specifically
reflected on energy projects.

“Armenia understands the need for energy safety and securing diversity
in energy supply sources for EU countries, but Armenia similarly has
the right to expect such understanding with respect to its security,
regional stability, and equal development. I believe the policy
of EU – the champion of security and peace in South Caucasus-must
contribute to equal regional development and, consequently, to
maintaining balance. We definitely want for the region to be involved
in all-European projects, which in its turn would strengthen existing
relations between South Caucasus and EU. Implementation of such
projects shall not create conditions which would make any country
find itself in more favorable positions, especially when that capital
is used against regional security. I believe EU knows the region’s
current fragile condition, all too well. The Southern Corridor should
not be allowed to become a source for nourishing a new war,” reads
President Sargsyan’s message, Presidential Press Service informed

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday there would never
be any disputes between him and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the
RIA Novosti reported.

Speaking with the heads of three Russian state-run TV channels,
Medvedev said that some political experts and opposition figures
frequently anticipated open confrontation between the two.

“It is often expected of us that we will at some moment begin to
quarrel and compete with each other in the political arena,” he said.

“But I want to say that this will not happen.”

“Can you imagine a situation where, for example, [US President] Barack
Obama began to compete with [Secretary of State] Hillary Clinton?” he
went on. “But I recall they were both in the race for the presidency.”

Medvedev on Saturday ended months of speculation that he might run
for a second term when he proposed to delegates at a United Russian
party congress that they back Putin to return to the Kremlin.

Putin accepted, and Medvedev is now likely to head the government
after next March’s presidential elections.

‘Karabakh conflict settlement to promote other ethnic disputes resolution’
Sat 01 October 2011 04:47 GMT | 0:47 Local Time

The world powers must be interested in resolution of ethnic conflicts
in the Caucasus.
The statement came from member of the Danish Parliament from the
Social Democratic Party Huseyn Arac while commenting on a statement by
the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

‘Russia must be more active in Karabakh issue since an ethnic conflict
can pose a danger for Russia itself. The recent past showed how Russia
suffered from ethnic conflicts. Therefore, resolution of the Karabakh
conflict can encourage resolution of other ethnic conflicts, too,’ the
Danish MP said.

Arac said the world powers need to take action towards resolution of
the conflict as a prolonged conflict raises chances of a new war in
the region.

‘The war benefits no one. But how long should Azerbaijan tolerate
this? Everyone should ponder over this question. Otherwise, the entire
region may face a possibility of a new war and it may be difficult to
prevent suffering,’ Arac added.

He will stand trial – Armenia’s first president about Armenia’s second president

October 01, 2011 | 20:12

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan is an ended
match for any reasonable person. He is not and has never been a
political figure, Armenia’s First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan on
Saturday said at round-day rally in the Liberty Square commenting on
the return issue of Armenia’s second President Robart Kocharyan into
politics.

`One of the most circulating themes recently is the possible return of
Kocharyan. This is an artificial theme, as Kocharyan is an ended match
for any reasonable person. He is not and has never been a political
figure. He has never struggled for an idea in politics and was always
adaptive to a system. And he came into power because of my fault.

Political statement is a figure to contact people and be liked by
them. He is an unhappy man. No one is as worried as he. No one has
ever committed such a crime and he will sure stand trial and carry
responsibility for his actions, after the system collapses.

He is not a problem for people. If he is a problem, he is only for the
current President Serzh Sargsyan.

According to rumors, ARF Dashnaktsutyun or Prosperous Armenia Party
can support him. I believe none of the parties will agree to share
that burden of blood responsibility with Kocharyan.

Only one person can support him, the former Armenian FM Vardan
Oskanyan. He shares the guilt with Kocharyan. And I close the theme of
Kocharyan.

Another frequent circulated theme is Prosperous Armenia Party.
Recently one of their core members’ stated that they will stand for
the elections alone. Besides, they recognize only Armenian Republican
Party as their rival. This is positive, as there will be political
competitiveness.

As a party, ANC should recognize Prosperous Armenia party. Regarding
the Republicans, it is a group of opportunists, who believe that they
should be in power forever,’ Ter-Petrosyan’s speech says.
