Armenian community objections have forced organizers to cancel next
week’s Turkish parade event in Hollywood.

The Armenian Youth Federation and Armenian National Committee called
Monday’s planned Hollywood Boulevard parade by an Ottoman military
marching bank an affront to victims of Turkey’s 1915-1918 genocide
of Armenians.

The parade was designed to generate interest in the Anatolian Cultures
Festival in Costa Mesa starting Oct. 6. It celebrates all cultures
that have at one time lived in what is now Turkey, including Armenians.

The Los Angeles Times ( ) says the Hollywood
parade permit was pulled Wednesday by the Pacifica Institute, which
organized the event.

Institute spokeswoman Hafsa Raied says the group promotes intercultural
dialogue and the uproar took the organization by surprise.

A parade of the Ottoman military marching band (Mehter Takımı),
originally scheduled to take place on Monday in Hollywood, has been
cancelled by organizers due to pressure from US Armenian groups,
who found the event “offensive” for the victims of the World War
I-era killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

Quoting remarks from an official at the Los Angeles Police Commission,
the Los Angeles-based English-language Armenian newspaper Asbarez
said the permit for the parade, scheduled for Oct. 3 on Hollywood
Boulevard between Highland and La Brea avenues, was pulled Wednesday.

Hafsa Rai, a spokeswoman for the Pacifica Institute, which organized
the event, told the Los Angeles Times that the uproar took the
organization by surprise and that its mission is to promote
intercultural dialogue.

“We are not here to offend anyone. That was never our intention,”
she said.

The march was meant to generate interest in the Anatolian Cultures
Festival in Costa Mesa starting Oct. 6, which celebrates all cultures
that have at one time lived in what is now Turkey, including Armenians,
Rai said.

Since its announcement, the planned parade drew strong reaction from
Armenian groups, including the Armenian Youth Federation and Armenian
National Committee, which called the march “tantamount to hate speech
and harassment.” The federation had planned to protest the parade,
organized via a Facebook page where the reaction among users was a
mix of surprise and outrage.

In an announcement issued earlier this week, the influential US-based
Armenian diaspora organization the Armenian National Committee of
America (ANCA) also protested the event, saying “the nature and
planned performance of the band are not only insulting but wholly
unacceptable to the Armenian American community.”

Asbarez said on Thursday that the Armenian Youth Federation welcomed
the cancellation of the event, and their planned protest was cancelled.

Armenian groups say up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed during
World War I in a systematic genocide campaign perpetrated by the
Ottoman Empire. Turkey categorically rejects the charges, saying the
death toll is inflated and that Turks were also killed as Armenians
revolted against the Ottoman Empire in collaboration with Russian
forces for an independent state in eastern Anatolia.

Southern Corridor Should Not Become A Source For Nourishing New War

SOUTHERN CORRIDOR SHOULD NOT BECOME A SOURCE FOR NOURISHING NEW WAR – ARMENIAN PRESIDENT

news.am, Armenia
Sept 30 2011

YEREVAN. – The Southern Corridor should not be allowed to become a
source for nourishing a new war, Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan
on Friday stated during his address at EU Eastern Partnership Summit
being held in Warsaw, Poland. In his address, Sargsyan specifically
reflected on energy projects.

“Armenia understands the need for energy safety and securing diversity
in energy supply sources for EU countries, but Armenia similarly has
the right to expect such understanding with respect to its security,
regional stability, and equal development. I believe the policy
of EU – the champion of security and peace in South Caucasus-must
contribute to equal regional development and, consequently, to
maintaining balance. We definitely want for the region to be involved
in all-European projects, which in its turn would strengthen existing
relations between South Caucasus and EU. Implementation of such
projects shall not create conditions which would make any country
find itself in more favorable positions, especially when that capital
is used against regional security. I believe EU knows the region’s
current fragile condition, all too well. The Southern Corridor should
not be allowed to become a source for nourishing a new war,” reads
President Sargsyan’s message, Presidential Press Service informed

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday there would never
be any disputes between him and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the
RIA Novosti reported.

Speaking with the heads of three Russian state-run TV channels,
Medvedev said that some political experts and opposition figures
frequently anticipated open confrontation between the two.

“It is often expected of us that we will at some moment begin to
quarrel and compete with each other in the political arena,” he said.

“But I want to say that this will not happen.”

“Can you imagine a situation where, for example, [US President] Barack
Obama began to compete with [Secretary of State] Hillary Clinton?” he
went on. “But I recall they were both in the race for the presidency.”

Medvedev on Saturday ended months of speculation that he might run
for a second term when he proposed to delegates at a United Russian
party congress that they back Putin to return to the Kremlin.

Putin accepted, and Medvedev is now likely to head the government
after next March’s presidential elections.

‘Karabakh conflict settlement to promote other ethnic disputes resolution’
Sat 01 October 2011 04:47 GMT | 0:47 Local Time

The world powers must be interested in resolution of ethnic conflicts
in the Caucasus.
The statement came from member of the Danish Parliament from the
Social Democratic Party Huseyn Arac while commenting on a statement by
the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

‘Russia must be more active in Karabakh issue since an ethnic conflict
can pose a danger for Russia itself. The recent past showed how Russia
suffered from ethnic conflicts. Therefore, resolution of the Karabakh
conflict can encourage resolution of other ethnic conflicts, too,’ the
Danish MP said.

Arac said the world powers need to take action towards resolution of
the conflict as a prolonged conflict raises chances of a new war in
the region.

‘The war benefits no one. But how long should Azerbaijan tolerate
this? Everyone should ponder over this question. Otherwise, the entire
region may face a possibility of a new war and it may be difficult to
prevent suffering,’ Arac added.
