CANADIAN-ARMENIAN ORGANIZATIONS LAUNCH `FREE ZARAKOLU’ CAMPAIGN

The Armenian Youth Federation of Canada and Armen Karo Student Association
have launched a joint campaign to call for the release of Turkish
journalist, publisher, writer and human rights advocate Ragıp Zarakolu.

Several months ago, 40 intellectuals were arrested in Turkey on trumped-up
charges of terrorism. Among them was Ragıp Zarakolu who runs of one of the
few publishing houses in the country which prints books on the Armenian
Genocide and other topics deemed taboo.

Zarakolu is also a recipient of the National Library Award of the Republic
of Armenia and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee.

The `Free Zarakolu’ letter-writing campaign kicks off March 8, 2012, at the
Armenian Youth Federation Room – Armenian Community Centre, 45 Hallcrown
Place, Toronto.

YEREVAN. – If the USA and Israel pull Azerbaijan into an anti-Iranian
alliance then they might provoke unrest like in Guba, Armenian MP from
the ruling Republican Party (RPA) Shirak Torosyan told the reporter of
Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him, it is not a coincidence that distress occurred in
the center of the historic Guba Khanate. The authorities of the local
administration in Guba displayed Khanate habits which caused the
protest of citizens even in the highly authoritarian regime of
Azerbaijan. Even the opposition in Baku is aware of the
demonstrations, Torosyan mentioned.

As Torosyan pointed out, if one were to look for foreign subtexts,
then the distress might be provoked by the USA and Israel in order to
pull Azerbaijan into an anti-Iranian alliance.

`In that case demonstrations might spread throughout the country.
Otherwise, if one were to assume only the inner political conditions
in the country, that is not much possible,’ Torosyan added.

ISTANBUL. – Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, the Armenian Deputy Patriarch of
Constantinople, and the spiritual leaders of Turkey’s Assyrian
Catholic and Orthodox communities also attended the conference held in
Istanbul and devoted to the preparations for the country’s new
Constitution.

In his address at the event, Archbishop Ateshyan noted that Turkey’s
current Constitution has a distressing point, according to which all
citizens of the Republic of Armenia are considered Turks.

`We know that we are the citizens of Turkey, but Armenian citizens of
Turkey. You cannot say that everyone who is a citizen of Turkey is a
Turk. A change must be made here. I cannot become even a police
[officer]. Everyone is equal before the law, but, in reality, that
equality does not exist,’ the Armenian Deputy Patriarch of
Constantinople stated, Haberler news agency of Turkey informs.

YEREVAN. – The fact that a conference on military medical service is
being held today already bespeaks many things, Yerevan State Medical
University Rector Derenik Dumanyan on Saturday noted during the
aforesaid conference, which is devoted to the 20th anniversary of
Armenia’s Armed Forces.

The Rector also recalled that the Armenian military medical service
had commenced during the years of the Karabakh War, and the service
developed in parallel with the army. Dumanyan noted that the
liberation war’s first physicians were civilian doctors, who faced
difficulties but were able to surmount them.

`In those years around eleven-thousand freedom fighters were wounded
and more than eight-thousand of them returned to the battlefield,’
Dumanyan said, and stressed that the physicians did everything to save
the lives of the soldiers.
