The press conference of members of the “Peace Bridge” initiative, who recently visited Azerbaijan, was held in Yerevan. The members of the Armenian delegation spoke about the humanitarian discussions, the state of communications and the prospects of changing public sentiments in the conditions of the complex peace process.

The fourth round of mutual visits has already taken place within the framework of the “Bridge of Peace” civil society initiative. The 20-person delegation representing Armenia visited Azerbaijan, crossing the demarcated part of the border. According to Areg Kochinyan, the head of the Armenian delegation, the preservation and expansion of such a format after almost four decades of conflict is a significant achievement in itself. He emphasized that the initiative does not aim to rewrite or forget history, but is aimed at forming new narratives and opportunities for the coexistence of societies. Kochinyan noted that there are no guarantees of the success of the peace process, but refusing to work in this direction guarantees that there will never be peace.

Naira Sultanyan, a member of the delegation, drew attention to the humanitarian block of the negotiations. The Armenian side has repeatedly raised the issues of the return of prisoners, detained persons and missing persons, declaring that the unresolved humanitarian aspects contradict the logic of peaceful settlement. The Azerbaijani side, for its part, expressed concern regarding the problem of mined areas, because of which hundreds of people suffered, and also raised the issue of missing persons from the war of the 1990s. According to Sultanyan, such contacts allow to listen to the nuances of the other party’s perception of problems and to work towards strengthening trust so that humanitarian issues are depoliticized.

One of the important aspects of the visit was the study of transport infrastructure. Political scientist Samvel Meliksetyan shared his observations on the state of logistics routes. He emphasized the sharp contrast between modern four-lane highways and high-speed trains in Azerbaijan and outdated communications in Armenia. According to him, the 300 km journey along the Azerbaijani-Georgian highway required less time than the 170 km through the territory of Armenia. Meliksetyan noted that long-term isolation and the status of a “closed country” had a negative impact on Armenia’s transit competitiveness. He also added that the issue of transport connection with Nakhichevan remains key for Azerbaijan, and the delay in the process of unblocking communications contains risks.

Delegate Boris Navasardyan summarized the results related to public sentiments. He noted that Azerbaijani colleagues in their society record a gradual increase in the proportion of people who positively perceive the process of normalization of relations with Armenia. It is expected that after the parliamentary elections in Armenia, the civil dialogue format can be expanded, turning into a cluster work, where field specialists (environmentalists, businessmen, economists) of the two countries will start direct contacts for the purpose of implementing joint projects.

Asbarez: Release of Captives by Azerbaijan will Strengthen Peace, Mirzoyan say

Artsakh leaders during their sham trial in a Baku court

The release of Armenian captives by Azerbaijan will strengthen peace, said Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan on Friday, explaining that the matter continues to remain an “unresolved issue” as Baku and Yerevan continue their dialogue.

Speaking at joint press conference in Yerevan with his Estonian counterpart, Margus Tsahkna, Mirzoyan reiterated Yerevan’s position that the established peace with Azerbaijan requires institutionalization. He noted that “peace exists, and we are reaping its fruits, but we also know that it needs to be preserved.”

Mirzoyan said that along with the resolved issues, such as transit and bilateral trade, there are also unresolved issues, “the most sensitive of which for the Armenian society is the issue of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijan.

“There are [Armenian] prisoners in Baku. They should be released as soon as possible, and their release will strengthen peace,” Mirzoyan said, adding that the dialogue with the Azerbaijani side is continuing.

The foreign minister added that the departure of the International Committee of the Red Cross—by decision of the Azerbaijani authorities—from Azerbaijan has complicated the situation. The problem exists, efforts are ongoing, but there is no news yet, Mirzoyan concluded, adding that the only news that could be is the release of a new group of Armenian captives by Azerbaijan.

Illegal actions against the Church continue as election promises

The Mother See of St. Etchmiadzin strongly condemns the inclusion of objectionable provisions regarding the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in the pre-election program of the “Civil Agreement” party.

In the pre-election program of the party, fixing the forced agenda of reforming the Church, revising the charter, removing the Catholicos of All Armenians and holding new Catholicos elections is a clear violation of the constitutional order, the right of self-government of the Church, as well as international fundamental principles of freedom of conscience and religion.

With pre-election promises to continue the obviously illegal actions against the Church, once again the entire anti-Church essence and purpose of the ideology of the ruling political power is demonstrated.

The adopted illegal way of working is harmful to the nation and absolutely unacceptable. It contradicts the interests of our people around the world, threatens the foundations of the national value system and undermines spiritual security.

RFE/RL – Armenian Speaker Phones Russian Counterpart

April 07, 2026

Armenia – Armenian parliament speaker Alen Simonian and his Russian counterpart Valentina Matvienko attend a forum, Yerevan, June 6, 2025.

Parliament speaker Alen Simonian phoned his Russian counterpart Valentina Matvienko on Tuesday three days after warning of Armenia’s possible exits from Russian-led defense and trade blocs.

According to a short readout of the call released by Simonian’s office, he discussed with Matvienko Russian-Armenian “interparliamentary ties” and other issues on the “bilateral agenda.” He also congratulated the speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, on her 77th birthday anniversary, added the statement.

The conversation took place one week after Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s latest visit to Moscow marked by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stern warnings to Yerevan. In particular, Putin warned Armenian authorities against barring what he called pro-Russian opposition groups or politicians from running in Armenia’s upcoming parliamentary elections. He also said Yerevan’s moves to eventually join the European Union are “not compatible” with Armenia’s continued membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Putin noted that Russia remains Armenia’s most important trading partner and supplies natural gas to it at a significant discount.

Simonian, who is a leading member of Pashinian’s ruling Civil Contract party, responded on Saturday by saying that Armenia will withdraw from the EEU and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) if Moscow raises the gas prices or imposes other economic sanctions on the South Caucasus country.

Simonian was criticized on Monday by Konstantin Kosachev, one of Matvienko’s deputies. Kosachev said Yerevan should appreciate Russia’s significance for the Armenian economy instead of “speculating about hypothetical changes in pricing policy.”

Speaking about the Armenian elections scheduled for June 7, Putin clearly singled out Samvel Karapetian, a Russian-Armenian billionaire controversially prosecuted in Armenia. Karapetian’s opposition movement launched shortly after his arrest last June is expected to be one of Civil Contract’s main election challengers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the 60-year-old tycoon claimed that Armenia will be plunged into a devastating “economic war” with Russia if Pashinian holds on to power.

“Russia supplies us with cheap gas, welcomes our seasonal workers and buys a significant portion of our agricultural products,” he said. “And if it stops all of that, what answer will you [the Armenian government] give to our people, who will become even poorer?”

RFE/RL – Sarkisian Urges Supporters To Vote For Other Opposition Forces

April 06, 2026

Armenia – Former President Serzh Sargsyan speaks during a congress of his Republican Party in Yerevan, April 4, 2026.

Former President Serzh Sarkisian has said that his Republican Party (HHK) will encourage supporters to go to the polls and vote for other opposition groups following its decision not to run in the June 7 parliamentary elections.

The HHK announced the decision on April 1. Speaking during a weekend party congress in Yerevan, Sarkisian seemed to acknowledge that its chances of remaining represented in Armenia’s parliament are slim.

”We need regime change. We are not interested in the prospect of having several parliament seats,” he said in a speech.

“There is a lot of talk about the need to motivate our citizens and ensure a high turnout in order to defeat the regime in the upcoming elections. We declare that the Republican Party’s activities, starting from this congress and until June 7, will be aimed at promoting the participation of our compatriots in these national elections,” he said.

“We will use every opportunity to convince our citizens to go to the polls and elect forces that will end Armenia’s current humiliation, end this treacherous, disastrous regime,” added Sarkisian.

Sarkisian stopped short of endorsing any opposition force. He noted only that he believes billionaire Samvel Karapetian’s Strong Armenia alliance is the number one opposition election contender.

The HHK ran in the last elections held in 2021 in an alliance with another opposition party led by Artur Vanetsian, a former head of Armenia’s National Security Service. The Pativ Unem alliance finished a distant third with 5.2 percent of the vote. Vanetsian announced its effective breakup a year later. None of the other major opposition groups appears to have been willing to team up with Sarkisian’s party this time around.

The withdrawal of Russian capital from our railway system stems from Turkey

April 5, 2026

“Classes” in the program Doctor of political sciences, professor, energy security specialist Vahe Davtyan talked about handing over the South Caucasian Railway concession to Kazakhstan.

The latter, among other important issues, also talked about handing over our railway concession to Kazakhstan.

According to him, there are unverified data that an area of 500 meters width is provided for TRIPP, which, if approved, raises serious questions. What is that huge area for, what are they going to put there?

«And parallel to this, we see talks about changing the Armenian railway model developing at the official level. Pashinyan is talking about handing over the concession of “South Caucasus Railway” to the Kazakh side. If the Kazakh capital is brought to our railway network, it means the actualization of the Middle Corridor, the Turan Corridor, in the territory of Armenia. The withdrawal of Russian capital from our railway system is in the interests of Turkey and the USA,” Vahe Davtyan said.

To remind: A few days ago, when Nikol Pashinyan was asked in a briefing whether during his telephone conversation with Putin, the question of urgently transferring the concession of “South Caucasian Railway” to a third party was raised, because there are discussions about transferring it to a Kazakh company, Pashinyan expressed hope that a partnership solution would be given to this issue.

“We will not mind if it turns out that there is a mutual understanding between us and Russia, that the Kazakh company is acceptable to both of us…

It’s not like we sit down and discuss with the Russian partners… because the Russian partners have not yet said: OK, we agree, let’s do it that way. I mean, the discussion is in a different mode, but there are such ideas floating around,” he said.

Back in mid-February, Pashinyan announced that his idea about the railway is that any country friendly with Armenia and Russia buys the right to manage it from Russia.

“There are forces within the framework of TRIPP who say: let’s make it so that after Meghri, when it enters Nakhijevan, it does not enter Nakhijevan and bypass Armenia. Naturally, our international partners say: “How can I bypass Armenia? Armenia is our partner.” There, those who want to bypass Armenia say that the railways of Armenia are under the control of Russia. We are doing everything to convince that, yes, it is under the management of Russia, but it is the property of Armenia, and Russia does not want to and will not create any obstacles regarding regional projects in any way,” he said.

It was talked about for a long time, he also mentioned that the concession could be transferred to Qatar, Bahrain or even the United Arab Emirates. We should also remind that Kazakhstan is a member of the Organization of Turkic States. Therefore, as a result of the deal, Turkey and Azerbaijan will have greater leverage to influence the railway.
