ANC opposition bloc needs to orient itself quickly to avoid breakdown

Should the Armenian National Congress (ANC) orient itself quickly and
assess the situation right, it will succeed in stopping the split in
the opposition bloc, leader of the Democratic Homeland party Petros
Makeyan told Tert.am.

`Davit Shahnazaryan’s pullout was a serious blow. He was a mighty
force with his experience and skills. But it cannot be considered the
last blow to the ANC,’ Mr Makeyan said.

The disputes over the political course adopted by the ANC after the
parliamentary elections resulted in the drain of core political forces
from the opposition bloc – Hanrapetutyun, headed by Aram Sargsyan,
Liberal party of Hovhannes Hovhannissyan and Davit Shahnazaryan –
close associate of Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

Petros Makeyan said the issues in the ANC are not caused by outside
factors, but the problem exists inside the bloc.
Asked whether the problem is in not encouraging pluralism inside the
ANC, Mr Makeyan said he and his party are trying to overcome it by
offering approaches, solutions. `It is very difficult though,’ he
said, adding that very often ANC’s decisions are being adopted
`outside of political council’, personally by the head of the ANC.

While members of the ANC avoid making any comments over the
developments inside the bloc, ANC associates express moods inside the
ANC on their Facebook page. Hrant Ter-Abrahamyan wrote that though
Davit Shahnazaryan has a right to leave the ANC and be against ANC’s
strategy to cooperate with the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), before
criticizing and leaving he should first of all have spoken about his
part of responsibility in the failure of 2011 dialogue between the ANC
and the authorities, which Ter-Abrahamyan described as dialogue of two
Davits, that resulted in cooperation with the PAP.

Last year the dialogue between the ANC and coalition forces was first
postponed and then suspended after the arrest of ANC activist Tigran
Arakelyan.

Petros Makeyan, though, said the core figures in the dialogue were
Davit Harutyunyan representing the authorities and Levon
Ter-Petrosyan.

This year’s honorees with the Prelate and Homenetmen leadership

UNIVERSAL CITY – More than 500 Homenetmen members, supporters, and
guests filled the Universal Hilton Hotel’s banquet hall on Sunday,
July 1 for the Victory Banquet celebrating the vast accomplishments of
the athletes participating in the 37th Navasartian Games.

Guests included Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian;
Consul General Grigor Hovhannesyan; Homenetmen Central Executive
members Hagop Tufenkjian and Viken Tavitian; ACF Central Committee
member Koko Topalian; ARS Regional Executive Board members; Adrin
Nazarian, candidate of the California State Assembly; and numerous
Homenetmen members, including Honorary Presidents and Exemplary
Homenetmen Members from years past. The event also had the strong
support of jewelers, whose attendance displayed their solidarity with
this year’s Honorary President, who also serves as the President of
the Armenian Jewelers Association.

After a one-hour cocktail reception during which the crowd mingled,
guests occupied their seats for the start of the evening’s official
program. Banquet Organizing Committee Chairperson Shant Haytayan, who
MCed the program, welcomed guests and thereafter invited Lara
Gharibian to sing the American national anthem, followed by Homenetmen
scout Ivonna Krikorian, who sang the Armenian national anthem and the
Homenetmen anthem.

Archbishop Mardirossian delivered his blessings, extending well wishes
for the Navasartian Games and congratulations to the Honorary
President, Mr. & Mrs. Gagik and Madine Gevorkian, and the 2012
Exemplary Homenetmen Member Maro Kechichian. The Prelate also read a
letter of blessings by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I sent on the
occasion of the 37th Navasartian Games.

During dinner, guests viewed two video presentations, one of which
covered the history of the Navasartian Games and the other presented a
biographical sketch of the Honorary President.

Following dinner, Congressman Brad Sherman delivered remarks and
presented a symbolic American flag, which has flown at the White
House, as well as its certificate of authenticity that was accepted by
Homenetmen Regional Executive Chairperson Garnik Abrahamian.

On behalf of the Homenetmen Regional Executive, Vicken Dakessian took
to the podium and delivered a message to guests, stating `Looking
around and within the boundaries of this banquet hall, I can’t but
admire all your individual and collective talent, intellect, personal
achievements and financial powers, thus tonight I am going to
challenge all of us to work together as one to exert all thinkable and
imaginable means to advance the Navasartian Games to boundless
frontiers. Let us all be a source of strength and a great example to
each other.’

Thereafter, Dakessian outlined the qualities of an Exemplary
Homenetmen Member and, soon after, invited this year’s honoree, Maro
Kechichian, to the stage. Kechichian thanked the Homenetmen Regional
Executive for bestowing her with the honor and expressed her
contentment with belonging to an organization such as Homenetmen,
where she has learned much to become a confident, bold, and patriotic
individual. She went on to praise the collective forces that lie at
the essence of the organization, which feeds it strength and leaves no
room for personal gains. Following her heartfelt speech, Kechichian
received a memorable plaque from the Homenetmen Regional Executive.

Soon after, in a much anticipated moment in the evening, the official
transfer of the tricolor ribbon took place from one honorary president
to the current one. As such, the 35th Honorary President George
Jamgochian transferred the ribbon to Mr. & Mrs. Gagik and Madine
Gevorkian. Mr. Gevorkian delivered a warm and touching speech
affirming what an asset Homenetmen is as an organization to the
Armenian people, confidently expressing his pride to be an Armenian
and belonging to a people from which such an organization was
established and continues to grow, inspire, and discipline the younger
generation. Gevorkian gave special mention to the fact that the
realization of what a fundamental role Homenetmen plays for the
Armenia youth is what became the decisive factor for him to accept the
role of Honorary President.

He concluded by encouraging guests to continue their show of support
by attending the Navasartian Games and closing ceremony, all the while
affirming his backing of the organization. Thereafter, he was
presented with memorabilia from Regional Executive Chairperson
Abrahamian.

Officials including Los Angeles City Councilmember Dennis Zine and Los
Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel also appeared before guests with
encouraging words, as did Michael Landver, a long-time friend of
Honorary President Gevorkian.

After the end of the evening’s official program, guests enjoyed music
from DJ Vazken and celebrated late into the evening with enthusiastic
spirit.

conflict: Azubalis

13:30, 7 July, 2012

YEREVAN, JULY 7, ARMENPRESS: There is no alternative to peaceful
settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the use of force and
status-quo are not favorable for the settlement of the conflict.
Armenpress reports that about this declared Foreign affairs minister
of Lithuania Audronius Azubalis. `Last year Lithuania as a Chairman
country in OSCE closely cooperated with OSCE Minsk Group. We are
concerned about the last incident son Armenian-Azerbaijani border’
declared Azubalis.

He reminded that in Vilnius the Council of Foreign ministers of OSCE,
Co-Chairs of Minsk Group, Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers
made arrangement to continue the negotiations in the framework of OSCE
Minsk Group and reach the settlement of the conflict with the help of
negotiations. `We fully support the cooperation with OSCE Minsk Group
which remains to stay the main format of the negotiations’ highlighted
Azubalis.

The minister noticed that the latest incidents on the border created
concern which proves the importance of investigation mechanisms for
such incidents which was suggested by OSCE.

in order to reach consensus which is the basis for keeping the peace.

OSCE PA urged to openly declare position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijan, Baku, July 6 / Trend M. Aliyev /

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly must openly tell Armenia in connection
with Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that it will not agree with preserving
the status quo and legitimizing the occupation, member of Azerbaijani
delegation to the OSCE member, MP Azay Guliyev said at the OSCE PA
session in Monaco on Friday.

“While continuing the occupation of Azerbaijani lands, Armenia
violates all international conventions and regulations,” he added.
“Azerbaijan wants to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh problem within the
international norms and waits for a similar attitude from the opposite
side.”

He delivered speech after Lithuanian MP Vilia Aleknayte-Abramikene’s
report on “OSCE – changing area”.

Guliyev said that Vilia Aleknayte-Abramikene is absolutely right that
the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict causes tension on the contact
line and the entire region.

Lithuanian MP offers first to withdraw snipers and adhere to the
ceasefire agreement and urges to conduct a detailed investigation
during the incidents.

“The Azerbaijani side has agreed to establish a mechanism of
investigating the incidents occurring on the contact line,” Guliyev
said. But logically, this mechanism can work only after Armenian
troops are withdrawn from Azerbaijani territories. If this happens,
there will be no need for snipers. On the other hand, I would like to
ask the speaker why are Armenian snipers on the Azerbaijani territory?
I ask to clarify this issue.”

The ceasefire regime has been recently often violated on the contact
line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops. Both sides have losses.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France and the U.S. – are
currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

Genocide that had been approved by both houses of the French

It was rejected by France’s Constitutional Court earlier this year on
grounds that it violated freedom of expression.

Turkish FM Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters that his country had removed
all economic and diplomatic measures that Ankara had taken in
response.

France’s center-right UMP party had launched the bill last year. The
party is now in the opposition.
