Bidzina Ivanishvili Highly Evaluates The Potential Of Armenian Commu

BIDZINA IVANISHVILI HIGHLY EVALUATES THE POTENTIAL OF ARMENIAN COMMUNITY

19:03, 9 January, 2013

YEREVAN, JANUARY 9, ARMENPRESS: Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina
Ivanishvili visited Holy Etchmiadzin Church in Avlabari on January 6,
participated in the liturgy and congratulated all Armenians on the
occasion of Christmas. Afterwards he had an official meeting with
Georgian Armenians. Armenpress was informed from Arnold Stepanyan
leader of “Multinational Georgia” public movement.

“There was a festive and beautiful atmosphere during the meeting with
Bidzina Ivanishvili. Event consisted of two parts full of number of
questions concerning Armenian churches’ issues,” Stepanyan said.

“Ivanishvili urged not to be afraid of speaking about this issue and
form a firm position over it,” Stepanyan underlined.

According to him the position of Georgian church is of crucial
importance in the issue of Armenian churches.

“Ivanishvili has also mentioned that Armenian community in Georgia has
a very important role in Georgia and that its political team is going
to use the potential of Georgian Armenians,” Arnold Stepanyan said.

“Georgian dream” party led by Bidzina Ivanishvili successfully
challenged the ruling United National Movement in the Georgian
parliamentary election, 2012.

"Certain Candidates Have Been Granted More Airtime"

“CERTAIN CANDIDATES HAVE BEEN GRANTED MORE AIRTIME”

04:29 PM | TODAY | POLITICS

Chairman of the National Concord Party Aram Harutyunyan says he
has been the only candidate to have been least covered by media in
recent years.

“Certain candidates have been granted more airtime as a gift from
Santa Clause,” he said.

Aram Harutyunyan says the situation in Armenia is more deplorable
today than it was during the [Karabakh] war.

“The reason is that the ruling regime is only thinking about enriching
its pockets. Our main task is to unseat the authorities. We have
never had such a corrupt government,” he said.

Mr Harutyunyan says the difference between the upcoming and previous
elections is that ‘we do not have false candidates this time.’

“People, who were fighting against Serzh Sargsyan and his
administration, today are kept in the basements of the ruling
Republican Party of Armenia (HHK).”

The chairman of the National Concord Party is not going to second
the other candidates if he does not enter the second round.

At the same time he suggests that the other candidates withdraw from
the race, leaving Serzh Sargsyan alone in the struggle.

“In that case Serzh Sargsyan will be unable to rig the elections,
moreover, he will not even gain 50 percent of the total votes, as
the BHK is not with him and the country is in a terrible situation,”
he said.

Analyst Sargsyan: People Should Have Faith In Themselves, Not Politi

ANALYST SARGSYAN: PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE FAITH IN THEMSELVES, NOT POLITICIANS
Grisha Balasanyan

16:15, January 9, 2013

Manvel Sargsyan, Director of the Armenian Centre for National and
International Studies, told Hetq that the Armenian public was in a
quandary in the run-up to the presidential election next month.

The analyst argued that voters don’t know what to make of the situation
where many leading opposition candidates have decided not to run,
thus paving the way for the easy re-election of President Sargsyan.

Sargsyan said that several opposition parties had finally realized
that running against Serzh Sargsyan was futile and thus they dropped
plans to enter the race. This, according to the analyst, is in stark
contrast to other elections when the opposition promised the electorate
that they could achieve tangible results.

Manvel Sargsyan went on to say that the press has also been caught
unawares and doesn’t know what questions to pose.

“Reporters aren’t accustomed to formulating questions in such a
situation. What the press is used to is covering an election campaign
for some five months and shaping public opinion,” said Sargsyan.

The analyst said that such a competition-free election would present
problems for the ruling regime coming from the international community.

Sargsyan argued that the international community would chide the
government for not creating the conditions for a truly all inclusive
election. To avoid such criticism, the analyst believes that the
regime in power will take cosmetic steps to form the impression that
the election is more competitive than it seems.

He concluded by saying that the time will come when the Armenian
public must realize that problems will be resolved only through its
own actions, and not by placing their faith in this or that politician.

Turkey-Us Ties ‘Closer Than Ever’ Says Turkish Ambassador Tan

TURKEY-US TIES ‘CLOSER THAN EVER’ SAYS TURKISH AMBASSADOR TAN

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (L) and Turkish Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu attend a news conference after their meeting in
Istanbul August 11, 2012. (photo by REUTERS/Osman Orsal)

By: Semih Idiz for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse. posted on January 8.

The Pew Research Center indicates that Turks are still among the
world champions in anti-Americanism. Pew’s “Global Attitude Project”
for 2012 showed that 72% of Turks rated the US unfavorably, while
only 15% rated it favorably. Only Pakistan and Jordan, out of a list
of 20 countries, proved worse than Turkey in this respect.

It’s easy to conclude then that there is little hope for Turkish-US
ties to develop further, even if they have maintained their military
alliance for the sake of practical reasons. And yet the two countries
are seen to be enjoying one of the best periods ever in their bilateral
ties, according to Turkey’s ambassador to Washington, Namik Tan.

“During this last period we have come closer than ever in
Turkish-American relations. Our ties have broadened, diversified and
deepened. There is a very close personal relationship between our
leaders,” Tan said in an interview with Hurriyet earlier this week.

Adding that the re-election of President Barack Obama provided “a
second window of opportunity” for ties, Tan said, “We do not have to
rediscover each other.” He also noted that “a country that does not
maintain good ties with America will fall back in the international
arena in terms of its interests.”

This is a far cry from the days of President George W. Bush, when
Turkey angered Washington in March 2003, after its parliament failed
to endorse a bill that would have enabled US forces to invade Iraq
from Turkish territory.

Turkish public opinion in turn, went ballistic when it emerged that US
marines, with little love lost for Turkey due to the decision by its
parliament a few months earlier, arrested 11 members of the Turkish
armed forces in a raid on their headquarters in the Northern Iraqi
city of Sulaymaniyah in July 2003.

The fact that Turkish soldiers were manhandled and treated like
Iraqi insurgents, with sacks over their heads — resulting in the
whole affair being known as the “Sack Incident” in Turkey — turned
into a matter of national honor, putting a great strain on ties
with Washington.

Those arrested — and subsequently released after the outcry in
Turkey — were accused of planning to create turmoil in the region
by setting off car bombs and assassinating Kurdish officials. These
charges were strongly denied by Ankara, and the whole incident still
remains shrouded in mystery.

Given that the military alliance between the two countries goes back
half a century, ties were not severed over this incident. But the
atmosphere remained frosty, to say the least, and worsened after
Washington’s “neocons” started accusing Turkey of moving toward
radical Islam under the Justice and Development Party.

Things started improving following Barack Obama’s election in
November 2008, especially after he made one of his first overseas
visits to Turkey in April 2009, during which he was warmly greeted
by the government and the Turkish parliament, which he addressed.

In the meantime, developments in the Middle East, especially after
the outbreak of the Arab Spring, further cemented this relationship,
leading to the current state of affairs that Ambassador Tan is so
cheerful about.

Ankara is also happy today about President Obama’s choice of John
Kerry for Secretary of State and Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense.

Both are known to have a keen awareness of Turkey’s growing regional
and global importance. Hagel is especially appreciated for his highly
laudatory remarks in the past on Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder
of the Turkish Republic, whose legacy he believes should be taught
in US schools.

Ankara has also noted Hagel’s approach to the 1915 massacre of
Armenians under the Ottomans, which many in the US Congress have
tried repeatedly to have listed as “genocide,” a possibility that
risks poisoning US-Turkish ties like no other issue.

His “leave history to the historians” attitude on this matter is
in tune with the official Turkish thinking. Neither has his past
criticism of Israel gone unnoticed in Ankara, which is currently
seriously at odds with Israel over the Palestinian issue.

None of this means, however, there are no points of contention
between Ankara and Washington. Ambassador Tan is the first to admit
this, although he is quick to point out that these differences are
not substantive, but merely stem from a different prioritization of
issues important to both countries.

On Syria, for example, the sides have established close coordination
and their approaches to the crisis are almost identical. Ankara,
nevertheless, expects Washington to be more active in trying to
topple the Bashar al-Assad regime. This, however, does not mean
Turkey is looking for a US-led military intervention in Syria, as
Tan explained to Hurriyet, which makes the question of what it is
that Ankara expects even more intriguing.

Differences on Iraq, however, are more apparent. Washington worries
that Turkey’s increasingly bad relations with Iraqi Prime Minister
Nouri Al Maliki, and rapidly developing economic and political ties
with the Kurdish Regional Government, taking place over Baghdad’s head,
risk dividing Iraq. Tan, however, is quick to respond to this charge.

“So what are their [the US’] companies, which number over 40, doing
there? Any company you can think of is there, but when it comes to
my companies, they should not be. This is not a convincing approach.”

According to press reports, Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioglu, the
undersecretary of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, is expected in
Washington soon for talks with his US counterpart, William Burns,
aimed at, among other things, ironing out differences over Iraq.

Then, there is the question of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Turkey acknowledges it is getting assistance from the US against this
group, which both countries designate as terrorist, especially in
terms of real-time intelligence, but insists that this is not enough.

It wants more direct involvement by American forces against this group
lodged in the mountains of Northern Iraq, which Washington has been
reluctant to do.

In the meantime, US Ambassador to Ankara Francis Riccardione has
taken issue on more than one occasion with repeated claims by Turkish
officials that his country is not doing enough against PKK terrorism.

Indicating that Washington is giving far more assistance than it is
credited with, Riccardione has openly expressed annoyance over these
Turkish claims.

Finally, there is the matter of Turkish-Israeli ties, with Ankara
expressing anger over US support for Israel, especially in the May
2010 incident involving the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish ship that was
part of an international aid flotilla headed for besieged Gaza when
it was boarded by Israeli forces, who killed nine Turkish activists,
claiming they were armed and aggressive.

Washington has been pressuring Turkey to normalize ties with Israel,
which Ankara has refused to do until that country apologizes for the
Mavi Marmara raid, compensates the families of the deceased and lifts
the siege on Gaza, none of which has happened yet.

Developments in the Middle East, however, are ensuring that these as
well as other similar differences, including the issue of Turkey’s
trade with Iran, do not overshadow military and political ties between
Ankara and Washington, which appear set to deepen even further,
despite the rampant anti-Americanism in Turkey.

Vote 2013: Top Pollster Says Runoff Unlikely In Next Month’s Preside

VOTE 2013: TOP POLLSTER SAYS RUNOFF UNLIKELY IN NEXT MONTH’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

VOTE 2013 | 09.01.13 | 14:57

Armenian top sociologist Aharon Adibekyan all but rules out a runoff
in next month’s presidential election where the incumbent president,
according to him, is a clear favorite to win.

Adibekyan’s opinion is based on the results of a survey conducted by
his Sociometer center in late December. The results of the survey
conducted among 1,420 eligible voters across Armenia show that
only 52 percent of responds are interested in politics, and only 28
percent have decided who to vote for in the February 18 poll. Only
38 percent of respondents expressed a desire to go to the polls. And
24 percent said they still did not have a decision regarding whom of
the candidates to vote for.

“The main task during this campaign will be to bring voters to the
polling station to vote for one or another candidate,” said Adibekyan
at a press conference on Wednesday.

“Theoretically a runoff is possible, but both [opposition Liberty
Party head, ex-prime minister] Hrant Bagratyan and [opposition Heritage
Party leader, ex-foreign minister] Raffi Hovannisian must have great
organizational and human resource to be able to be represented in
all communities of Armenia,” added the sociologist who has often been
accused by the opposition of presenting opinion poll figures pleasing
the authorities.

So far the Central Election Commission has received full sets of
documents from eight potential candidates. Meanwhile, at least 15
people had intended to run for president, but seven of them have failed
to present receipts confirming their payment of an electoral deposit.

The main opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), the “alternative”
Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(Dashnaktsutyun) and some other political parties opposed to the
current government refused to engage in the current presidential
race. The ANC and PAP also indicated that they would not endorse any
other candidate, while Dashnaktsutyun ruled out support at least for
the incumbent president.

Adibekyan said the Sociometer poll revealed that if the 28 percent of
the “decided” voters went to the polls today as many as 72 percent of
them would cast their votes for incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan,
20 percent would vote for Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian,
3 percent would vote for National Self-Determination Union Chairman,
Soviet-era dissident Paruyr Hayrikyan, and the remaining 5 percent
“remains up for grabs”.

“That may be the share of Hrant Bagratyan and other underdogs,”
said Adibekyan.

According to the sociologist, only 10 percent of PAP leader Gagik
Tsarukyan’s potential 30-percent-strong electorate have decided to go
to the polls in February in the absence of their preferred candidate.

“A third of Tsarukyan votes is likely to go to Serzh Sargsyan, another
third to Raffi Hovannisian, and another third may go to Bagratyan or
other candidates,” said Adibekyan.

The leading pollster also thinks that Dashnaktsutyun’s position may
change things a little.

“This is the most organized political party, and besides public
statements they have internal decisions, and everything depends on
what internal instructions the ARF Executive Council gives to the
rank and file – whether to support Hovannisian or Bargratyan.”

Serzh Sargsyan Defeated Ideologically, Says Politician

SERZH SARGSYAN DEFEATED IDEOLOGICALLY, SAYS POLITICIAN

tert.am
10.01.13

Serzh Sargsyan, as a presidential candidate, can be said to be have
suffered an ideological defeat, with the socialist forces being unable
to fight the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), a socialist
politician has said.

“Serzh Sargsyan suffered a defeat because the socialists in Armenia
cannot afford to fight the RPA with money. We find that the sum
collected through our members – 32,000 US Dollars – will be spent
uselessly,” the leader of the socialist movement Essence of Time,
Robert Aharonyan, told a news conference on Thursday.

Aharonyan, who had earlier declared his plan to run for election and
later gave up the idea, said instead of holding elections it might as
well be enough to check how much a candidate has. “Why not restrict
elections to a wallet and thus decide who the winner is?” he said

But in the meantime, Aharonyan warned that such efforts will not put
an end to their struggle. “We will struggle for not only nominating
[a candidate] in the elections, but also a victory. We will also
head to the National Assembly elections and all the other polls,”
Aharonyan added.

Asked which candidate they are going to support in the upcoming
presidential election, the politician said they still have to consider
the issue. “We will say in just a couple of days who we are going to
back, but that will be the person who profoundly leads us towards
Russia,” he said, adding that it is the people’s desire to pursue
the path to socialism.
