Venice Trailer: Fatih Akin’s ‘The Cut’ Starring Tahar Rahim Plus
Official Synopsis And First Images

Some slight waves were made earlier this year when Fatih Akin pulled
his forthcoming “The Cut” from the Cannes Film Festival citing
“personal reasons.” So we figured the movie would wind up somewhere
else on the 2014 fall festival slate, and indeed, it’s now at Venice
and the first trailer has arrived.

Starring Tahar Rahim, details about the plot had largely been kept
under the wraps, with only the only hint that Rahim plays a Charlie
Chaplin-esque character, in the movie that caps off the director’s
“Love, Death and the Devil” trilogy. But not only does the promo open
a window onto the movie, so too does the official synopsis (Google
translated, but you’ll get the gist of it): Mardin, 1915: One night,
driving the Turkish Gendarmerie along all Armenian men. The young
blacksmith Nazareth Manoogian is separated from his family. After he
manages to survive the horror of the genocide, years later it reached
the news that his twin daughters are alive. Owned rediscover the
thought of her, he follows in their footsteps. They lead him from the
deserts of Mesopotamia over Havana to the barren, lonely prairies of
North Dakota. On his odyssey, he meets many different people, angelic
and benevolent characters, but also the devil in human form.

“The Cut” will screen in Competition, and the film runs 138 minutes
long. Trailer below.

Azeri men arrested in breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh indicted

YEREVAN. July 23

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic (NKR) has formally charged the Azeri citizens who infiltrated
its territory.

The charges include espionage, the crossing by an organized-crime unit
of the protected NKR border without permission, kidnapping, use of a
firearm against an underage person, illegal possession of a firearm
and ammunition, homicide involving kidnapping by an organized-crime
group motivated by ethnic hatred, and an attempted murder of two and
more persons by an organized-crime group motivated by ethnic hatred, a
spokesperson for the NKR Prosecutor General’s Office told Interfax on
Wednesday.

On July 14 the NKR defense ministry reported the completion of an
operation to disarm an Azeri subversive group. During the arrest of
one of the saboteurs on July 12 an Armenian army major was killed.
Also, a woman was injured in the head and is currently being treated
in hospital in Yerevan.

The Armenian Defense Ministry told Interfax earlier that members of
the Azeri subversive group are not regarded as prisoners of war and
will be tried according to the local laws.

The Armenian government wants to hand over the shares of Nairit and
Nairit-2 companies instead of debts to the Ministry of Finance and
Vorotan HPP CJSC. Thus, the executive tries to improve the financial
state of the energy system.

These two companies, together with other 11, are part of Armgazprom
CJSC since 1998, the latter has accumulated debts and some assets of
the company will cover them – by handing property rights of 46.73
percent share of Nairit-2 CJSC to the government and 53.27 percent
share – to Vorotan HPP CJSC.

Besides, upon the planned changes, the Tegh-Stepanakert gas pipe will
be handed over to the “Staff of the Ministry of Energy and Natural
Resources” state administrative institution.

The executive, however, did not hurry to approve this plan at the
sitting today as Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan ordered to discuss
the suggestion for two-three days before arriving at a decision.

If the decision is final the government will be able to nullify the
debt of 8.5 billion AMD (about $20.7 million) of ArmRosgazprom that
was handed to Russian Gazprom.

Analysts think that if the deal succeeds Nairit liabilities will be
handed to Vorotan HPP CJSC which has been purchased by American Global
Contour Company (the deal is not completed yet though).

It is interesting that Gazprom is ready to give up the
Tegh-Stepanakert gas pipe which will mean that Nagorno-Karabakh can
get rid of dependence on Russia in terms of natural gas.

“Every journalist should be informed on the subject he or she is
writing about, but his/her journalistic skills are much more
important,” says Gevorg Hayrapetyan, a lawyer of the Freedom of
Information Center NGO.

“Otherwise, our MPs will be forced to test their knowledge, because
journalists will win most of them with their knowledge,” he said.

Gevorg Hayrapetyan is convinced that by demanding to choose the
journalists who are going to cover parliamentary activities state
officials try to ‘enchain’ them.

“It turns out that the legislature is trying to take everything in its
hand and choose journalists who will cover the activities of Armenian
Parliament,” he said.

LEVITT PAVILION PASADENA CELEBRATES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE MEMORIAL AT AUG. 7
ECHOCELL CONCERT

The planned memorial is scheduled for construction in Pasadena’s Memorial
Park in 2015

PASADENA, Calif. (July 18, 2014) – Levitt Pavilion Pasadena has partnered
with the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Committee to celebrate and
bring awareness to the Armenian Genocide Memorial — planned for Pasadena’s
Memorial Park — with a performance by Armenian synth/pop band Echocell on
Thursday, Aug. 7, at Memorial Park. A pre-concert festival begins at 6:30
p.m. Music begins at 8 p.m.

Representatives from the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Committee,
along with Levitt Pavilion board members and staff, will address the
audience and present project details. Information about the Memorial will
be available at an on-site booth and donations accepted as the project will
be constructed and maintained with private funding.

`In the five years of my service as president of Levitt Pavilion Pasadena,
I have not been involved in any event as meaningful and significant as the
Aug. 7 concert,’ says Board President, Darrell Brooks. `I am honored to
have it occur on my `watch.”

Pasadena is home to a large Armenian community. In 2013 community leaders
formed the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Committee to establish and
maintain a public memorial of the Armenian Genocide within the City. The
proposed site is in the northwest section of Memorial Park. The planned
dedication in 2015 will coincide with 100th anniversary commemorations of
the Armenian Genocide.

Art Center College of Design student Catherine Menard designed the
Memorial. More information is available at

Los Angeles-based Echocell is comprised of Istanbul-born singer/songwriter
Belinda Kazanci and songwriter/keyboardist Adam Beltran.

`When I heard about the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial I was touched
by what was being created, not only as an awareness-building monument but
also as a form of art in our local parks,’ says Kazanci, whose
great-grandmother was killed in the Armenian Genocide.

`I hope during our concert we will be able to spread the word about the
Memorial so that more contributors will help make this project a reality.’

Kazanci tapped into her Armenian roots on the band’s new EP, which
features the traditional Armenian duduk instrument. More information

Political expert: OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs want to lobby the meeti

Political expert: OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs want to lobby the meeting
between Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan

arminfo
Thursday, July 24, 15:24

To all appearances, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs want to lobby a
meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Deputy
Director of the Caucasus Institute, political expert Sergey Minasyan
has told ArmInfo.

According to Minasyan, the statement of the Co-Chairs says nothing
new. “The Co-Chairs’ problem is to find creative formulations every
time. When the tension on the Line of Contact escalated, the Co-Chairs
urged the sides to reduce the tension. After the Azeris’ sabotage
attack on Karvachar and the murder of 17-year-old Smbat Tsakanyan,
they expressed serious concern about the increase in tensions and
violence, including the targeted killings of civilians”, says
Minasyan. He adds that the OSCE Minsk Group can make diplomatic
formulations only.

Minasyan stresses that the Co-Chairs are trying to continue the
Karabakh peace process. In this context, the consensus stance of the
U.S., Russian, and French Co-Chairs is very important amid the global
processes.

When asked how realistic the high-level meeting is on the margins of
the UN General Assembly in New York, Minasyan points out that
everything depends on whether the mediators will be able to exert
pressure on Azerbaijan and to lobby that meeting. The expert says that
the Co-Chairs are doing their best to continue the peace process but
one should expect no breakthrough in the foreseeable future.

To remind, on July 23 the Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group
(Ambassadors Igor Popov of the Russian Federation, James Warlick of
the United States of America, and Pierre Andrieu of France) released a
statement. “The Co-Chairs expressed their serious concern about the
increase in tensions and violence, including the targeted killings of
civilians, along the Line of Contact and the Armenian-Azerbaijani
border. They urged the parties to commit themselves to avoiding
casualties and rejected the deliberate targeting of villages and the
civilian population. They called on the Foreign Ministers to defuse
tensions and adhere to the terms of the ceasefire. The Co-Chairs and
Foreign Ministers also discussed possible agenda items for a
presidential summit, underscoring the importance of a meeting between
the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan for achieving progress in
peace negotiations. They also discussed meetings which could take
place in New York on the margins of the UN General Assembly”, says the
statement.

To note, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic has brought criminal charges against the Azeri raiders
detained near Karvachar in early July. The press service of the Office
reports that two Azeris were detained while attempting to cross the
border last week: Gulin Shahbaz Jalaloglu, who had a silenced
Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Makarov pistol and two frag grenades, and
Dilham Gardashhan, a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a Makarov pistol.
The third Azeri showed resistance and was killed. Both Jalaloglu and
Gardashhan have been arrested and are facing the charge of illegal
crossing of state border. A special investigation group is inquiring
into the case. The Armenian side also suffered losses: Major Sargis
Abrahamyan (born in 1972) was killed, a woman, Karina Davtyan (born in
1977) was wounded, and 17-year-old Smbat Tsakanyan was kidnapped and
killed.

Armenian authorities lie about Levon Hayrapetyan’s citizenship

The authorities are claiming that the Armenian philanthropist Levon
Hayrapetyan arrested in Moscow is the citizen of Russia that is why
they do not exert efforts to help him.

According to them, if he was the citizen of Armenia they would have
openly defended him. But it is a lie. Levon Hayrapetyan is citizen of
Armenia. He has an Armenian passport and is proud of it. The author of
this article has personally seen it few times. Levon Hayrapetyan has
dual citizenship: he has Russian and Armenian citizenship.

Iran supports actions of restoring peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Baku, Azerbaijan, July 23
By Temkin Jafarov – Trend:

Iran always supports the actions of restoring peace between Azerbaijan
and Armenia, spokesperson for the foreign ministry of Iran Marzieh
Afham told media on July 23.

“I believe that the agreement between the two countries to meet in
Paris, as well as discussion of the actions aimed at the development
of bilateral relations and the problem solving are these countries’
affairs,” she said.

Afham was answering the question about the French president’s inviting
the counterparts of Azerbaijan and Armenia to meet in Paris, Iranian
TV channel IRINN reported on July 23.

“If officials of Azerbaijan and Armenia have accepted this invitation,
this action is aimed at solving a problem and improving the relations
between neighboring countries,” Afham added.

“Iran always supports the preservation of warm relations between the
neighboring countries,” she added. “This policy is also conducted
towards northern neighbors. We want efficient efforts and the
normalization of the relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Iran is
in talks with the two countries in this area.”

Regarding a meeting of the Iran-Azerbaijan Economic Commission in
Baku, she said that at the moment, a working group is working in this
direction. The information about the documents to be signed at the
meeting will be announced a few days before the meeting.
