[Herald Interview] Making life choices through acting

Simon Abkarian, a French-Armenian actor who played Col. Amanulla in
“Kaboul Kitchen,” flew from the ongoing Venice International Film
Festival to receive the grand prize at the Seoul International Drama
Awards. It is his first visit to Korea.

Reflecting on his diverse roles in films, TV dramas and plays over the
past 30 years, the 52-year-old actor said he considers two things when
selecting a drama.

“First, we actors have to work and make a living, at least for me,”
said Abkarian. “But second, and more important, I choose the work
where I can be faithful to what I believe in and be able to defend the
work and not run away from it. I cannot betray what I believe in.”

As an actor, Abkarian likes to make choices when they are available
to him, just as he chose to star in “Kaboul Kitchen,” which he says
depicts an environment in which two cultures meet — a French
restaurant run by an ex-journalist in the war-torn city of Kabul,
Afghanistan.

“It is a clash of cultures between the East and the West, where people
who don’t know each other and are from different backgrounds learn to
live together in a war situation,” he said.

But the film also talks about journalism, said the actor: “Just like
in many countries around the world, journalism has lost much credit in
France. But people still want to see journalists doing real jobs of
investigation and searching for truth. When viewers see that, they
have hopes for the future.

“You realize, it becomes heroic in today’s circumstances to tell the
truth as a journalist, and bring the news out, battling between the
money and power.”

He also worked with director Fatih Akin very recently in the drama
film “The Cut,” centering on the Armenian genocide during World War I,
which is competing for the Golden Lion at the Venice International
Film Festival. Being of Armenian descent himself, working on the film
was very meaningful for him.

“As an artist, I like to make choices,” he said. “It is true that I
cannot carry all the world’s problems on my shoulders, but I can make
choices to stand for the people who don’t have voices, who are not
visible, and tell their stories.”

Actors can give voice to the unheard and the forgotten, said Abkarian:
“I write and direct plays as well to create my own vision in this
world by expressing my freedom.”

“But I am not always serious,” he continued. “I also like to have fun,
so it is a good balance between humor and being political.”

Upon his visit to Korea, he watched many Korean films, including “Old
Boy” by Park Chan-wook.

“Korean cinema practices art with great freedom and with artistic
madness,” said the actor. Abkarian thinks that many Korean films
beautifully blend modern and ancient themes well. “If I do get a
chance, it would be a lot of fun to take part in Korean films, if I
can learn the language fast enough,” said the actor, who already
speaks five languages — French, English, Armenian, Turkish and Arabic.

“I am not afraid of learning new languages because communicating is so
important for me,” he said. “When I go to new countries, I always do
two things: visit (the dining) table and the stage. Since I had good
Korean food last night, I would like to see pansori (Korean
traditional opera).”

Asked why he became an actor, he couldn’t answer promptly, though.

“But I knew one thing. I love people and that is why I am acting. It
is important how you represent your people — not only Armenians or
Koreans — but humanity in general. There are no racial, social
boundaries to love everyone.”

Armenia’s joining of the Customs Union still being dragged out

4 September 2014 – 10:55am

The path of Armenia to join the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and
Kazakhstan, taken at a meeting of presidents Vladimir Putin and Serzh
Sargsyan in Moscow a year ago, has not ended yet. Armenia was planning
to become a member of the CU in spring 2014, before the signing of the
Eurasian Union agreement in Astana on May 29. The summit of presidents
of the Customs Union in Minsk on September 10 is another benchmark in
the process.

Andrey Smirnov, vice president of the Eurasian Cooperation Development
Foundation, said that Armenia has started integration into the Customs
Union with a road map consisting of 50 compulsory points. Kazakhstani
President Nursultan Nazarbayev named technical aspects for Armenia at
the Astana meeting on May 29. Neither Armenia nor Kyrgyzstan have
accomplished all the technical goals.

Smirnov reminded that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree
on September 1 to join Armenia to the Eurasian Economic Union. He is
adamant that the presidents of Armenia and Kyrgyzstan will be invited
to the September 10 meeting and an agreement will be signed. An
unsanctioned protest happened at the president’s administration on
September 4, 2013, the day following news about Armenia’s integration
into the CU instead of association with the EU. Similar protests
started yesterday, activists were calling for the independence of
Armenia and insulting the Russian authorities.

Special outrage in Armenia was caused by warnings by Nazarbayev that
the occupied territories of Nagorno-Karabakh could not take part in
any Eurasian integration projects. The Kazakh president told his
Armenian counterpart Sargsyan that joining the Eurasian Union is done
according to the borders recognized by the UN, just like joining the
WTO.

The Armenian president agreed to join the CU and the EaEU according to
UN-recognised borders later. The Armenian authorities regularly
emphasize that Yerevan will not make any efforts to follow the rule as
a member of the Customs Union. Armenia is basically organizing a
full-fledged border with occupied Azerbaijani territories, customs
offices and a ban on crossing it without the necessary documents. It
is possible that the occupied territories are what is slowing Armenian
integration into Eurasian projects.

Turkey and Azerbaijan Focus on Friendships and Feuds

September 4, 2014 – 10:22am, by Giorgi Lomsadze

As president, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip ErdoÄ?an on September 2-3
paid his first foreign visit (not counting a trip to
Turkish-controlled Cyprus) to Azerbaijan to talk about things the two
countries share: a friendship, a feud with Armenia and pipelines.

“We are very glad that you came home to Azerbaijan, your homeland, in
less than a week after your inauguration,” declared Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev by way of greeting to his new counterpart,
though old ally. ErdoÄ?an, for his part, wanted to emphasise that the
mi-casa-es-su-casa relationship that characterized his nine-year run
as prime minister will continue strong. “We are two countries, one
nation,” he underlined.

And what keeps an alliance together better than a mutual enemy? Both
presidents condemned Armenia’s occupation of breakaway
Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent Azerbaijani lands. Aliyev vowed to spare
no effort to counter the “lies about the Armenian genocide,” the
Ottoman-era massacre of ethnic Armenians that Turkey claims was
collateral damage of World War I.

Some observers believe that the Karabakh conflict is an even bigger
obstacle to the normalization of ties between Turkey and Armenia than
the genocide row. Baku carries enough cultural and financial influence
over Ankara to thwart any attempts at reconciliation. The
Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey energy corridor is too important to Ankara
to let anything threaten the route.

Just like Armenia, energy transit projects were a must-mention at the
meeting. ErdoÄ?an said he is looking forward to launching the
construction of the Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline, abbreviated as
TANAP, which is set to bring Azerbaijani gas across Georgia and Turkey
to Europe. “Inshallah, the groundwork will be laid on September 20,”
he pinpointed.

On Armenia, ErdoÄ?an put it pretty plainly, saying that the
Armenian-Turkish problem will resolve itself if the
Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict is resolved. The way things stand now on
Karabakh, this means that neither of the region’s two biggest problems
are going anywhere in the foreseeable future.

Turkey to raise Karabakh issue at NATO summit: Erdogan

Turkey to raise Karabakh issue at NATO summit: Erdogan

September 3, 2014 – 18:39 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The issue of Nagorno Karabakh will be included in
the agenda of the NATO summit due in Wales September 4-5, Trend quoted
the Turkish President as saying.

As Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after a Baku-hosted meeting with his
Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev, during the upcoming NATO summit Turkey
plans to stress the importance of fulfilling promises given to
Azerbaijan.

“Turkey is ready to show determination in the issue,” he emphasized.

President Erdogan added that the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh
conflict is a priority for Turkey which testifies to high level of
ties with Baku.

Earlier, Turkey’s newly appointed Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu
announced his Cabinet’s program, with normalization of ties with
Armenia among other points.

The official characterized promotion of stability in South Caucasus
and reduction of tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan among
Turkey’s foreign policy priorities.

“We’ll also continue efforts to improve ties with Armenia in hopes
that Yerevan will be guided by mutual interest for cooperation and
search for “fair memory,” rather than historical hatred,” the official
noted.

According to presidential press service, Armenian leader Serzh
Sargsyan will leave for Great Britain on the evening of September 3.
The President will meet the leaders and cabinet heads of the ISAF
(International Security Assistance Force) member states on the
sidelines of the NATO summit.

irréversible maintenant”, a déclaré Sarkissian.
